Great video. I preferred the pixel output overall, although I really dislike pixel portrait mode so I never use that. Normally iPhone video crushes any android phone but the pixel held it's own here I feel. Will probably re-watch this on my TV though 😁😎
I also rarely use portrait mode now that the sensors are getting larger and generating more natural depth of field. Watching on a big TV is usually best. 😉
My take on the Pixel's video capabilities: It’s finally caught up to the iPhone, especially in daylight. In fact, I’d say it’s as good or even better. At night, the Pixel still has a bit more jitter due to digital stabilization, but Night Sight Video helps reduce this. My theory is that Night Sight uses a higher shutter speed and ISO, then de-noises it before the video is finished processing. I get similar results when I use Davinci Resolve's noise reduction to any regular Pixel footage I film in lowlight. The iPhone, on the other hand, manages this in real time thanks to its faster processor (which is insane). With the Pixel 10 moving away from Samsung’s processors and adopting TSMC’s, I expect it to fully close the gap. There might be some adjustments with the new chips, like we saw with Tensor, but Google’s experience with Tensor should minimize any growing pains this time around.
Thanks Tim, great thoughts on the video. Everyone has high hopes for the next generation Tensor with TSMC fab, so hopefully they deliver. Google tends to iterate on the same camera hardware to keep things consist, so we'll see what they bring out next year.
@@GrantLikesTech Thanks Grant! Definitely looking forward to it, and more of your videos! I know they take a lot of work to make. I'm in a bit of a rut myself, trying to find the time to make at least 1/month.
Photos are great on both. Pixel is already toe to toe with iPhone when it comes to videos but nightsight video takes it even further. The uw-lens & selfie camera are superior on the Pixel.
By far the most comprehensive comparison I've seen. Those were some nice shots you made. I also appreciate you using the Photographic styles to what looked like making the iPhone shots closer to the Pixel 9 colors for easier comparison.
I've been a Pixel fanatic since Pixel 2, but the gaps between Pixel and iPhone have really closed through the years. I'd probably go with Pixel if I was out in dark rooms or at night. But even then there's some situational back and forth. Some of Pixel's moves the last few years weren't to my preference, I wish they would've kept Marc Levoy around for his artistic spin on the processing. But bottom line I could easily be happy with either camera
First, thanks for being a long time subscriber and sticking with the channel. Appreciate your thoughts, and agree the gap has definitely closed. Most of these comparisons will always come down to personal preference as technically you'd be fine with either, especially for casual shooting. Marc was definitely at the forefront of computational photography.
I really like this video! Great work, Grant! My two cents about the video boost and how it works behind the scenes. In Video Boost mode, the phone records two videos simultaneously: - a 1080p "preview" video, that you can access right after recording the clip - a 4K log video, that's being sent to the Google Photos cloud The first video is the one you can see in your Gallery straight away, the second one will be processed by Google and sent down to you after the process is finished.
Once I changed to Pixel 9 Pro I couldn't believe how meh or even bad the photos are from my iPhone 15 PM. I always noticed the green and warm filter but didn't care much. And seeing the same thing on the iPhone 16 Pro is awful...
@@EarLyyx I always took photos and videos from the main camera, then posted them later on Instagram. Also with my iPhones. When I do the same with the Pixel it looks great, in very high quality the videos and photos. My iPhone 16 Pro is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow from T-Mobile but honestly I think I’m going to return it. I really like more the still photos from the Pixel and with video boost the video on the Pixel is on par with the iPhone and at night video boost wins. I still prefer the colors on the Pixel camera they have a vibe to them.
I liked the iPhone a little more than the Pixel, but both devices are good, the 2024 smartphones are very good, especially the vivo X100 Ultra, for its useful and high-quality video 👍💪 Pixel has very good photos at night, I'm not a big fan of iPhone but I really like versions 15-16 for photos and videos, and in general iPhone has never had so many strong competitors as this year.
I’m in love with the Pixel . ❤ Amazing job Google . Apple should tune down that very contrasty looks in their photos… Way too much sharpening in zoom photos. In 2025 the iPhone still struggle with lens flare 😮 Is it that difficult for Apple to change it?😅 Pixel suffers from it too but Apple always suffered from that for years and years and has done nothing to address that. The only letdown for me is that the Pixel suffers from extreme noise when recording and shooting pictures at night. I hope they fix it in the next software update .
iPhone zoom isn't great for sure. Low light video noise is tough because in the view finder it can look fine, but the end video looks poor. Before you could see the noise while recording so you could adjust the exposure to improve it.
If you want to make the difference, you should consider add a mirrorless camera in smartphone cameras comparison, like a Fujifilm. This will give us a better perspective of how good are those smartphone cameras these days.

Thanks, welcome to the channel! These always come down to personal preference, and I prefer using Pixel. I do still have to hand video to the iPhone, but Pixel video quality is still more than good enough and has been improving year over year.
With the exception of the micro-jitter in the night videos, I find the results with the Pixel strangely better almost across the board. Strangely enough, because I was actually sure that the iphone makes the better videos, but that's not always the case. With video boost, the Pixel's bird shots are much sharper and still look natural.
One of the better comparisons! iPhone wins when it comes to video, portraits, and in some shots I prefer that it retains the shadows. Pixel wins when it comes to HDR, front camera, and night shots. I prefer the Pixel photos about 60% of the time but it's not as consistent as the iPhone. The Pixel tends to make more mistakes like missing background blur in places (this is more apparent in other video comparisons sometimes around hair or in between legs, arms, etc. I also think that the Pixel raises the shadows too much sometimes.

I may not be an expert in photography, but in my ignorance I find that in photographic shots they are very similar. Sometimes Google wins, other times in my opinion iPhone wins especially in macros, portraits and color consistency, which Google tends to recalibrate the color when you zoom. All things considered, both devices are high-end and, in addition to aesthetics, the price is also similar in the end. Perhaps iPhone is the most complete of the two if we also consider everything else not related to the photographic sector and paying more or less the same amount as an iPhone on a Google, makes you turn up your nose a bit for the latter. If someone has been an Android user for years it is unlikely that they will change to go to the closed Apple ecosystem, unless they are a masochist or are looking for specific functions that Google does not have. Ditto for those who have been happy with the iPhone for years with all its advantages and disadvantages.

For example look at the new customization feature from ios 18. i have the s24 ultra and had many others in the past and quite frankly the iphone looks so clean with the new customization and i like it more than android.
