Yeah, keep it on the road, it's beautiful. On camera it looks almost like new inside. But, it does sound like a bag of bolts. And, this IS the content we love.
Now your talking this is the content I love
If it does not consume coolant, it can also be a badly clogged heater core. The lack of mayonnaise in the oil, normal coolant levels and normal engine power indicate that the engine could be fine.
I agree, could be a dodgy thermostat, especially when there is no heat....
Or water pump?
I guess one of those cheap head gasket testers would give the definitive.
he could checked that on video on the hoses.
I love how you can see past all the dents, scratches and dirt, Matt. Love the Freelander ❤Welcome to the Freelander 2 owners club, Ste 😃
I bought a FL2 recently, partly because of your videos on this car, and I absolutely love it! Paid 4.2k for a 2010 model. First 4x4 I've had and certainly not the last.
Must keep their value to sell for that and be nearly 15 years old
Such a vibe, great atmosphere here!
As I single handily built these cars at Halewood I am proud you like them 😊
you should have done up all the nuts and bolts up properly. that's why they're all so unreliable.
You “single handedly” built every freelander 2 ever built did you ?? All by yourself ?? 🤦♂️😂🤦♂️
@@MrBarryairdhe did do some overtime 😂
@@johng7304you sure your real name isn’t Jonny 5 ?? 😂
@@MrBarryaird I’m alive!
I had a 2007 Freelander 2 HSE for 115k miles over 10 years. Never let me down and only repair cost was a clutch and a few door locks. We enjoyed lots of trips around Europe to visit the alps. Great car, the secret is to keep them regularly serviced. 36mpg and great on tyres and enjoyable to drive. Paint and interior was mint when I sold it after a hard life regularly moving PA and lighting gear - they clean up well.
At least the Freelander 2 is not too bad but the first Freelander was a shocker !!
Whats the tax and insurance like on your FL2. Has the insurance gone all Land / Range rovery ? Cheers
If webuyanycar refuse to buy your car
You could always sell it to Matt !
It’s crossed my mind. Especially as he collects so I don’t have to insure it.
My mate had 2 of these had the same problem as this one and turned out to be thermostat problem the water system was airlocked that's why his heater never worked put thermostat in em and he had 3years trouble free miles so check it out first matt 👍
Matt, have you changed something with the audio or used some kind of noise reduction to eliminate background noise or a different mic? The audio sounds a bit muffled when it's usually spot on
Freeloader 2 is the most reliable Land Rover ever made. 2.2 Transit engine makes it the safest Land Rover ever to own.
Air bags, seat belts and impact bars make a car/4x4/van 'safe' - not the engine, that powers it forward and backwards. 😁
I'm afraid safe in Landy world means it's the one that will break down the least 😂 @@pistonhedd
@@Thisath100That goes for any motor though tbf, they ALL have their faults. Even wheelbarrow's aren't w/o faults 😆
Not the Ford transit 2.2 in these sorry.
Thank god they don't have the ford 2.2 diesel in them instead it's the much more reliable Peugeot 2.2 diesel
We bought an FL2 new in 2010 and we have still have it. It's now done 120k and other than brakes and service parts, its had one steering lock unit, a wheel bearing and a couple of door locks. It can tow up to 2t and is magnificent with the horse box on the back whilst delivering decent mpg. It has been really cheap motoring for us. We have looked to change it a couple of times but just can't find anything comparable that isn't way too big or has a chocolate engine. Don't knock them unless you have owned one.
I did 56000 miles in a year in 2010 a 2.2 HSE totally reliable and comfortable
Love the subtle Partridge references.
. My Freelander2 has done 170000 miles and has no problems, great car. Wingmirrors are expensive at £450 plus vat and then fitting, but I bought of ebay for £179 free delivery and they are an east fit
This is your 3rd freelander 2 you bought on the channel 😅
4th actually!
@@michaelswanton9785 I know the first one he did a review on it (which was a 2013 model)
I've not watched the vid yet, and I ain't psychic, but, I'm gonna say, for £300, it's either gonna be Matt, 'massively overspending' or it's a trip to the knackers yard ha ha
I'll comment again in 20 mins
You beat me to exactly the same sentiment 😮😂
Wrong on both counts mate. What he does is actually some very clever networking - which is the secret to big business.
Ring we buy any car see what they offer🤣😂
Car graveyard you mean 😅😮
I always enjoy your reviews Matt, you come across very honest and genuine, not something a lot of car dealers inspire in people. My only thing that I have an issue with is the Car vertical bit every time, I appreciate you do it for a reason, but I always fast forward through it now.
I can believe that there is a smart, comfy Land-rover underneath. With nice classic and definitely British colours.😊
I'm happy with my 'garden shed' of a FL1 😏👍
I have a 2012 xs with 176k on the clock,runs like a dream
Diesel or petrol 4 or 6cyl
My Freelander 2 '145000 'has been rock solid, cant see any reason to sell it ,it just runs and runs, never let me down.👍
Bought my FL2 after watching Matt's video about 4 or 5 years ago. Over 200k and it still runs like a dream. Really love it.
Got some tungsten tipped screws in the boot Matt..never gonna use em..never gonna use em.
They’re actually good for making a point
Another one saved well done Citizen
Matt, I bought my Golf 1.9SDI 2001 about 4 years ago for £265 with a knackered clutch, it was down in Devon. Paid a local garage to put a new clutch in and change oil and filter and off I went back to Brum. It has just cost me £700 at MOT time, massive overspend. However it is ultra reliable, does 68mpg on a run and is like an old friend. So rest assured you're not the only massive overspender out there.
Hi Mat, I have three of these. The Key modules fail, but, an old battery will give faults and communication issues. My 2009 model, has had front and rear diffs rebuilt, due to a jammed handbrake one side. The tyres have to all have equal tread depth to stop the diff problems. Overheating could be also be a failed heater matrix.
I had a Citroen with the same engine and had an overheating problem caused by both cooling fans failing simultaneously… other than that great engine!
as someone from Turkey this seems like a dream to me. that car is 20k eur in my country because of taxes. i would buy this just to play need for speed in the backseat.
14:20 Matt, a lot of JLR stuff had "fake" temperature gauges. They went straight to "normal" (from a short time at "cold") unless there was a problem when they would go straight to "maximum hot".
Same as Mercedes
I also bought a Freelander 2 in July. 2.2 HSE 2012. I’ve already done 3000 miles. Last weekend I took it to the Yorkshire hill rally to use as a safety radio car and had to go off road in deep mud and ruts. It absolutely walked it. And that was on normal road tyres. I’m pretty sure that once the engine is sorted on Matts FL2 it will be really reliable
"can't really go wrong with it can I?"
Okay guys the betting starts now
I’m so glad it’s not just me channeling Brian Potter when adjusting my seat! 😂
Wow looks amazing inside , these have such a good rep yes hard to believe it a LR with a good rep 😂, love to have a future update on this and like you said worth spending the money on doing the engine up
Nicely parked up next to that “Car problems?” sign at the car wash.
Haha I saw that. Pure coincidence
Don't assume it is the head gasket. If the coolant system is not pressurized, eg faulty filler cap, it will boil at 100 deg instead of 130 deg. Obviously it is much more likely to be the head gasket but you never know!
You’re the absolute best, Matt. Always enjoy your videos
Meant finish these videos are great and some of the most fun and compelling content! Keep them coming!
This is exactly what I need here in Barbados to take to the beach and not worry about it at the supermarket. Bring it over, Mat!!
Had one of these, on a 2009 GS manual, with 109k on it. All that went wrong apart from brakes etc was a throttle body which I replaced myself and a drivers side front bearing. 2009 was the last year you could blank the EGR off without a light coming on. Mapped it, and it ran like a dream. Can recommend these to anyone, they pull like a train.
Ive seen a water pump drop the impeller. Overheated but the clue was no heater due to lack of coolant flow.
Hi Matt, these 2.2 are ford engines .Offered greater reliability than the succeeding 2.0L insignium engines Nevertheless you can't go wrong for 300 quid
Freelander’s actually have a Peugeot 2.2 HDI engines. Only the Defender has the Ford 2.2 Puma engine.
Yes Ste, keep it going! Can't lose really
Great outcome!
Not another one matt 😂
Steve has got a barging. You're a good chap Matt!
I have always found the shape of this particular model to be the most beautiful than ALL others, including all the news ones! Beautiful colour and in pretty good shape. Even if someone spends £1500 on it, it's still a good value.
Matt, I deliver RR's for JLR, and that beeping which will be driving you mad is that new EU thing that says every new car has to have that system installed, which tells you every time you enter a new speed limit, and beeps when you break it! Anyway, to turn it off, on the steering wheel, you'll find a symbol on the left hand side, looks like a white circle with a car inside it. Press that 3 times every time you start the vehicle (as it defaults when started to "high" level) and put it in "low". That should shut it up by 95%. It also turns off the lane assist which is also annoying. If you press that same button twice, it'll be in "Custom" and you can adjust the settings in the infotainment screen to suit. Hope that helps.
As someone mentioned it could be a clogged heater core. Matt didn't check it for bobbles in the cooling water reservoir (at least not on camera). Well he zeroed out his expenses, and this Land Rover just might get to live on by his colleague.
I saw this and felt like skipping right to the end to hear ‘I massively overspent’
Sold my 2008 4 years ago because the rear arches were going. Interesting to see the state of this one.
best small SUV that LR has made. most LR are now over complex and expensive. I have a Series 3 LR and it is the exact opposite, simple and agricultural. the FL II was a happy medium and in HSE spec is very comfy for long trips.
Look forward to the boys at Transformation fixing this.
I'm looking forward to watching them fix the head gasket, over on Transfermotion. Another good channel.
I always forget in how many countries Carvertical checks a car’s history. Luckily I get reminded every episode
Haha when I saw the thumbnail I was like no these have the head gasket issue especially the model before this. Ten seconds in you didn't disappoint
I love that Matt drives a brand new Range Rover, but can still get excited and enthusiastic over a 15 year old Freelander with a broken engine.
Brilliant video, again 😁😁😁
Another excellent video Matt 🚗🚙🚘👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
Two weeks ago i bought 08 plate for £350 HSE top of the spec.
great video as always. A compression test will show a leaking head gasket but the JLR 2.2 is very robust as a rule. Also what MIC do you use? you have very little ambient noise - excellent
You mean PSA 2.2 HDI
Matt, I had similar with an old Saab years ago. It turned out to be the water pump drive shaft.
You look well,Sir.
Hi Matt! Love the videos. I was in Stockport the other day for a puppy yoga event for my girlfriend 🙄. Was going to pop in at high peak autos but didn’t know if you’d be in there.
The Land Rover brand is your Kryptonite ! No Superman don’t go and fall for the obvious trap and yet he does… every time. And we watch it, despite the fact we KNOW the ending 😂
Great content, ‘dreadful cars’, that last bit a direct quote from a Land Rover specialist, because ‘that’s where the money is!’ 😂
Keep it coming Matt 👏🏾
Amazing how you manage to get a Phonenix Nights ref into a car revue, classic
You’ve got a lot to answer to Mr High Peak 😂
All these LR vids…. Caused me to go out and buy a 2017 RRS Autobiography 😮
I bloody love it 🤭
Nice one chap
"perished".
Lovely stuff.
You forget this is basically a Ford, Volvo ,Peugeot, engine and Land Rover styling, Hybrid which is why it is probably the best Land Rover of this period, but still comes with a bag of spanners, mine did....lol
HSE Wheels, 14 speaker Alpine gear.
Worth a grand in pieces.
Hell, you'd get that for the gearbox.
I need either a powerflush or a Torque converter in mine
Steering lock is a common fault. You can either have it replaced or the more common fix seems to be an emulator
Legit never seen anyone cutting up a doormat and putting it in a car 😂
I had the old 2004 k-series up until 2021.... besides the head getting replaced back in 2007.... rust was the main issue.
I haven’t watched it yet, but any video with a Land Rover with the bonnet up in the thumbnail has always got to be good 🤣🤣
Headrest on seat before you drive could save your life!!!
Please let us know how Andy gets on with fixing this, it would be interesting to see how it pans out and the expense to sort out it's problems and ultimately whether it was worth it
You should carry a white coat with you for vehicle inspections with "Dr Overspend" embroidered on it.
Great colour combo…thanks for saving a proper car 👍
Check it hasn't been fitted with a steering lock emulator to get round the steering lock fault message. They bypass the fault so the steering unlocks and the vehicle will start. They're usually cheap plug in Chinese units that have been known to fail, applying the steering lock when you're travelling down the motorway !
Seriously chuckled at "we don't have the original mats I'm afraid, but we do have a... (pause) what looks like a welcome mat" 😂
Imo: There's only 1 "4x4" uglier than a Freelander. That award must go to the Jeep Patriot. Which has the aerodynamics and design based on a biscuit tin.
Well done Matt another unloved work horse saved will go to a better caring home
Got offered a Freelander mk1 TD4 couple weeks ago for £150, I said no thought after learning the price of tax on it and the fact it was standing on the guys drive for the past couple years and it had a few issues
Great deal for your mate. 👍👍👍👍
I fricking love these freelander cars
Well worth doing the head gasket, get a few more years out of that, and get 300 back in scrap when it gives up the ghost.
Matt may massively over spend (hope not) but I don’t think he’ll ever be able to scrap a Landrover.
(I’m gonna watch the video now)
Omg the audacity to even call J Davidson for this car.
7:22 That rear ‘handle’ needs to be blackened or replaced.
12:09 If you could sell it for £5.995 surely there’d some profit in this car.
I bought a 1983 ford granada 2,8 ghia x realy mint 4 years ago with 79000 miles , With a blown head gasket i put a bottle of might have been K SEAL not sure , I and ran it an hour ,and its perfect now and its on 193,000 now still going its still in southport .
The conker is likely there to deter spiders!
Love the fl2
They don't take that long to warm up generally but that did seem quick.
Had a low coolant warning on the MY2011 I own but found that the expansion cap outer rubber seal ring was loose. during the hot weather we had recently. Replaced the cap and topped off coolant and so far so good.
That's a heater core would be my thoughts no smoke no oil mix no coolant usage its either blocked or the thermostat isn't opening
Runour has it....he is still up on those hills waiting for it to cool down
Worth saving, and you're not out of pocked, plus you've dome a mate a favour. - It's all good.
Why you do a clean-up before checking the mechanics? The mechanics decide if it's viable to restore it. Please explain.
Easy!!!! Mat is a person who likes his stuff clean before he lets other people work on it and also for his own sanity. The same as for a plumber who needs to work on your toilet when you have an issue!!!! Have respect and clean it to many dirty people around and expect other people to clean their shite. He basically saved the car just because it was cleaned. Let me know if you need more explaining. A proper mechanic would not even let it into his garage in such a state.
Your boundless optimism is quite uplifting but £300 ? Glad there was a happy ending.
This was brilliant half way through it was like Matt was Matt Armstronge or Ed China ,Or head off SPR . This was a very good buy 100%. Thanks Guy the peppermint green E38 guy well known in manchester .
Should have put some steel seal in it and whacked it in the auction Matt 🤣🤣
I had a Skoda Felicia years ago with a blown head gasket with water going into the oil , the garage put £20 of K-seal in the radiator , did an oil change to get rid of the contaminated oil then they ran the engine at idle for over 1 hour and in over 2 years of driving it never went wrong again , best £300 car i ever bought but in a car like that Land Rover paying the £600 to fix it properly would be worth it as those engines usually get to 300 thousand before something serious goes wrong , no idea how the head gasket went ? my guess would be previous owner was towing a heavy load and had their foot down for a long time lol
If you're gonna beat yourself up Matt, use a feather, not a Freelander! 😂
A narrow escape there Matt.........but as you rightly pointed out, it'd be worth spending £1000 to get it sorted.... At least *you* won't be spending it....
I think these are just a MK2 Focus underneath so hopefully maintenance isn’t too expensive
