Released a mere 2 years after the original, Mad Max 2 completely changed the image of the franchise and set the standard for sequels to come. It also obviously was a heavy influence in the Fallout franchise, thanks to the huge budget and market penetration it had. Quite a mark was left on the world with this movie.. but how does it stack up today?

I see the first Mad Max movie as "pre"- post apocalyptic. It does a convincing enough job of showing that society is starting to decay and become more and more hectic, but it hasn't really broken down completely. I thought the overall cinematography and the action scenes were pretty entertaining. Overall it's a great action film, that utilizes it's low budget in the best way. Certainly not as good as the second film but still pretty damn good.

@Redmund Ironically NEITHER 1-2 are "post-apocalyptic" as this all takes place right before the big bang. That happened after MM 2. It is mentioned in part 3. Part 1 is when the economy crashed due to global tension between two major nations and there was no financial growth. There was probably an oil shortage world wide and people started to turn on the law and government who lost control. Which is pretty much what the MFP was created for, as a last attempt at order. They failed and people started to steal and kill one another for resources. Come 2, its all over and people are fleeing the city to try to survive (The truck in the beginning is laded up with household goods as the person tried to take it all with him). Hence why a lot of Humongous's gang are ex-cops as they were the few who had the resources to drive and attack those fleeing. Come after the events of part 2, that is when those two nations decided to drop the big ones. I would imagine most major cities across the globe who allied were targeted. That is why people like Max and those in the wasteland survived and why fallout is an issue.

@Gremlin87 Yeah civilization has fell apart in Mad Max 1. Hence the roving biker gangs, and the rag tag police. I like to believe, that Max, and many of the MFP, and even some of the biker gang were veterans of Vietnam, or the "oil wars." I've loved these movies since I was kid, back in the 80's.

I like to think that WWIII happened before the first Mad Max, but common amenities haven't yet run out or become uncommon. Here in Road Warrior we see civilization lose its grip as stuff like gas starts to run out. In Thunderdome, we see gas as we know it run completely out and yet people are trying to rebuild with new technology. This is just my interpretation of the situation based on the first three movies only.

I was utterly surprised by how much better The Road Warrior was to the original film. The cinematography was perfect, the action was massively improved upon, the characters were different and unique, the acting was great, and the pacing was incredibly sharp.
It definitely has a lot more fun and spectacle behind it compared to Mad Max 1. It's like George Miller took what was well done in the first film and made it many times better here, and needless to say, it certainly shows.
Mad Max 2 is definitely a must watch for fans of post-apocalyptic films, as well as average movie-goers in general. As a film by itself, it's a fantastically well-done piece of film-making. As a sequel, it's an undeniable near-masterpiece.

Mad Max was not post-apocalyptic. It took place *during* the apocalypse, or the earliest days of it at least. The first film was supposed to take place during (or immediately after) a war between Saudi Arabia & Iran, in the late 70s, which precipitated a global oil shortage. Mad Max takes place once that oil shortage has taken hold and as society is beginning to crumble. The Road Warrior takes place several years after that, during the final phase of society's fall. Thunderdome is set many years after this, and also after the great powers have had one last, nuclear war as sort of a death-spasm.

Hey Decker, I know I've asked you this before, but since you've now tackled Australian cult cinema I thought I'd ask you again: have you seen the movie Razorback? It's an Australian 80s horror movie about a giant killer wild boar and it's one of my all-time favorite movies, and I'd love to see you reviewing it. It's done by the same guy who went on to direct Highlander, has the same cinematographer as Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior as well as actress Arkie Whiteley (the Gyro Captain's love interest in Mad Max 2) in a major role. If you haven't seen it you have to check it out, it's a cult gem for fans of everything horror and Australian!

The way I always took the timeline and its confusion: Mad Max is set in a podunk city out in the boonies of Asutralia. The bombs dropped about a year before the start of the movie, but no official news has reached them yet so they are trying to progress along like a functioning city. Once Max took off into the wastes he came to realize that society has in fact collapsed long ago.

3:49 Actually, the dume buggy was being driven by one of Pappagallo's scouts. Right? Maybe they were an unaffiliated "loner stalker."
    4:16 / 12:56 All chaps are assless.
5:15 They never explain how or why the scar on his right eyebrow switches to his left eyebrow in Beyond Thunderdome. Nor do they explain why he lacks facial scars in Beyond Thunderdome (from the wounds he sustains toward the end of The Road Warrior) which should be on the left side of his face. I guess, if we're going by George Miller's own assertion that each Mad Max movie is supposed to be like a campfire story told by a bard's interpretation of the exploits of a mythic hero, then continuity errors can be excused. So then why do they always remember this his knee brace goes on his left leg? Or that he's right-handed and straps his sawed-off to his right thigh? If one side-specific detail doesn't matter, then none of them should matter. Contrariwise, if one side-specific details does matter, then they all should matter.
5:46 Bruce Spence has been in everything.
5:59 I wonder if Bruce ever thought about what might have happened to the fingertips of his left hand had he actually loosed a bolt while grasping the crossbow like that.
6:42 The origin of the word "guzzleline." It only sounds natural coming from Bruce Spence.
8:24 He picks his battles wisely. He knows that one or two against an organized gang is futile, no matter how much he'd like to go down there and end them rightly.
9:10 We're supposed to believe Max is a selfish prick here, but I call malarkey on that. "Quid pro quo" is the basis of civilization. Without symbiosis, there's only parasitism. Max may be a scavenger, but he's not a parasite. Anyway, what's wrong with being a scavenger? Scavengers make use of others' refuse, thereby doing their part to sustain equilibrium in the ecosystem.
    11:15 "Quid pro quo, Clarice."
12:04 Again, is that scavenger a scout from Pappagallo's camp or just an unaffiliated "lone stalker?"
12:07 I've always wondered why he puts it in the left breach and not the right. You know, since the front trigger is easier to pull and corresponds with the firing pin on the right side.
13:21 I've never understood why Mel holds his hogleg like that with his index finger on the front trigger and his middle finger on the rear trigger. You sacrifice a lot of grip strength that way. In fact, you'd only do that if you intended to fire a double-shot and he only has one shell loaded anyway, plus you'd never fire a double-shot one-handed unless you were a cyborg. People have messed up their fingers and wrists attempting shit like that. Firing single controlled shots out of a sawed-off one-handed is entirely possible, though. Would be more comfortable with a contoured backstrap, preferably rubberized or padded in some way. Anything to protect the palm and the web of the hand from the cam lever during recoil. Also put pistol sights on the rib to improve aiming. Yes, you still need to aim a sawed-off to be effective with it.
13:40 Wez is totally in his element in this scene.
    14:31 But he's also tall.
    15:07 Clever callback.
19:00 *THANK YOU!* It always pissed me off that supposedly "right-wing maniac" Mel Gibson would have referred to a shotgun shell as a "bullet." There *are* such things as 12-gauge bullets (.729 caliber or 18.5mm), but they're used in safari rifles which are made to sustain much higher pressures than shotguns which use comparatively slow-burning powder.
20:04 That was the last that particular tribe ever saw of him, so the statement is literally true from the perspective of that character.

I guess I just always assumed that Mad Max I occurred during WWIII. The way people acted in that movie, it reminded me of how (during war time) local events often get overlooked in favor of national interests. And that's what we see to a very high degree as the local police force is understaffed and overpowered by gangs. So, while most of the brave, patriotic men are off fighting a foreign enemy somewhere, the locals are left to their own devices. And given the dread and hopelessness around the war, it leads the people who didn't go to war to act like selfish fuckwits, preparing for a barbaric world and exacerbating that very problem.
RIP Dogmeat. You were the greatest.

maybe the reason the Mad Max universe doesn't make sense continuity wise is because....... it's all in Max's head.
After his family was murdered he snapped. that's why the world around him falls more into ruin as the movies progress; it's a reflection of his shattered mind.
he also finds himself in situations where he has to help people; because of his own guilt of not being able to save his own family.

Jeez - it matters where you are during “the apocalypse.” The novel On the Beach as well as Mad Max begins with the premise that Australia is far from the conflict, therefore isn’t bombed out in the first movie. As far as the conventions of the genre, this movie defined them. But for my money, Mad Max felt more authentically post-apocalyptical than Thunderdome. If the apocalypse happened tomorrow, my house wouldn’t necessarily fall down and re-rise made out of oil cans and garbage nor would all my clothes fall apart and leave me with only bondage gear, football pads, and tire treads.

I am of the firm opinion the first Mad Max was pre-Apocalypse I get the confusion as it's always very hard to follow the Mad Max movies timeline as the details always seem to differ between movies. Miller has stated this is intentional as he sees the Mad Max movies as basically camp fire stories which is why Max and the world he inhabits is always a bit different because even if the same story is being told it will vary slightly depending on who's telling it. That's just how camp fire stories are. This mentality applied to a movie franchise makes any continuity confusing but it's how Miller made it.

Miller opened a new standard in action and scifi genre creating the easiest story with an iconic hero everybody in the whole world could understand and sympathize with.
Gritty violence, Frazzetta comic style, fast-speed pace, amazing photography and totally fascinating and disturbing post-apocalyptic look. Many tried to copy, no one got it.
My favorite film, I watched it for the first time at 14 years old and I freaked out! I've seen a million of times after that (and there's only one Max Rockatansky: Mel Gibson, know what the Hell I mean?)

Bit late to the party but for some reason I always thought Humongous was Fifi. Tho the locks of fucked up hair you can see behind the mask kind of kills that theory I guess since Fifi was bald, he definitely had the body for the part tho, unlike Goose.

Never really considered Wez and The Golden Boy being lovers before, but it makes perfect sense, on a couple levels.
    1. The teen is smaller and weaker. Having Wez as a SO, or father figure, accounting for the story, as Wez is in a right hand man, to Humungous. No one that wanted to live is going to cross him.
    2. It's a wasteland. Pregnancy would not be a wise choice, survival wise. And there are several gay members of the gang, for just that reason. Every character has a back story, By Miller.
He mentions it in an interview.
Including the Car beque De Soto driver sporting the Pink beard.
And 3, the world is kinda like a prison, and this group takes by force, like some do in prison. We see the end result when Max walks over, snd takes the guy out with bolt cutters. Don't see too many women outside the compound. Slim pickings out there.
And one more is casually taken out in the final chase scene as well.
Like all urges we find a way to satisfy them.
And no. I'm not a homophobe. Frankly, who someone loves and is attracted to doesn't make a difference to, as long as they aren't trying to pick me up. And even then, I take it as a compliment, but politely inforn fhe other party that I am both straight, And married.
It's literally how I met 3 of my closest friends.
So, to George Miller, thank you for including that into the story.

    *The post apocalypse thing*
It probably was a retcon, though it's also easily explained by not everywhere totally going to hell all at once. Places that are fare away from large cities and important infrastructure probably aren't touched by the nukes directly and society could limp along for quite a while.

I think a bigger issue with the gas is that... it spoils over time! Yea, after about a year it's no good as fuel in a car anymore. You can put things in it to preserve it but you have to know to do that.

You do know a post-apocalyptic setting won't just happen overnight it would take many years for the apocalypse to actually set in. Everything wouldn't fall apart at the same time. The government would fall first and then everything else. Till everything ceases to work many communities will try to keep things going.

Feral Old Man should not be considered to be a very reliable narrator in opening. He was probably only a couple years old when the world ended. He would've had to rely on second hand info. Who knows how many years it took for him to learn how to communicate enough for people to give him what details they could of the war. Plus, Max didn't give out any details of his past. All they had was Papigallo's seemingly correct guess that Max had lost his family at some point.

Had a thought occur to me. Why ammo woukd be scarce. Outside of LE and the military, or combat sports, how many people know how to effectively fight with mele weapons, edged weapons, or their hands? I'd bet it's a small percentage of the population.
Most that seek a means of defense tend to go for firearms and ammunition. Maybe bows and crossbows, as ranged weapon's keep you safe at a distance, and up close. Teouble with that is?
An old military and western adage is, Never fire twice. One shot, unless it's close, or from an obvious spot, most can't detect the direction. 2 or more, they are listening way more, and will pick up the direction you are in. Always keep noise down.
And what will said group, that now knows where you are, do afrer they are done with you? Loot the corpses, dwellings, and vehicles.
