    Standing on 18th tee last night 1 up in Semi-final. 18th at ours is 160yards all carry over heather and bunkers. Always struggled a bit with it, usually fat and short. Watched this video yesterday morning, tee’d it just above the ground on a broken off tee and nailed it to 10 feet to win!! Cheers guys, great work👍🏌🏿

    @ 4:17 is the exact reason why I don't use a tee when i'm hitting my irons, I'm a mid to low handicap player so my ball striking is pretty good and I've seen a lose in distance on the course whenever I've tested out teeing up my ball. However I'm intrigued by the thought of using a tee as a method of distance control and a way to attack front pins especially if the greens I'm playing on a firm

    I do what Jumbo Ozaki used to do many years ago and what all golfer did before there were tees, which is to create a small mound of turf with my iron and place the ball on top of that mound. Gives the advantage of a tee but sits on the ground. For me, you’re hitting all if not most of your shots all day long off the fairway or rough, then suddenly on a par 3, you prop the ball up on a tee...just never felt natural to me.

    Many years ago I was part of a small group of folks taking a lesson from a pro named Gary Player. When asked he said in his somewhat abrasive way "Why would you not give yourself the advantage of a consistently perfect lie when striking the ball with an iron." He then proceeded to show us how to tee it (low) and made two hits 1 with a tee, 1 from ground. Without a shred of doubt the answer has been clear to me ever since, but if you can answer the question of teeing up for an iron any better then Gary I would like to hear it.

    Interesting vid! When I hit a 6 iron shot well off the fairway vs. a well struck “perfect lie” tee’d up par 3 shot, it’s the same result. To me it depends on turf conditions. Some well manicured tee boxes allow the ball to kind of “perch” up on low cut stiff blades of grass. Hit the ball well and then it won’t matter…haha. See, golf is easy!

    A tip for some of you out there is to play with tee height. If I am between clubs I will take a bit off by teeing the ball up a bit so I can hit it a few mm higher on the face. Similarly if I have wind on my back and I want to add some dynamic loft, than this works as well.

    Anyone remember how the LPGA player Laura davies used to tee it up on a par 3? Along these lines I’d love to see the difference when one is in between clubs. Are most player more accurate stepping on/deloft the higher lofted club or choking down/ball moved up/smooth swinging the lowered lofted club? Maybe a new challenge for big Al to see who can get 20 swings closer? 10 of each.

    Opposite end of the spectrum you're talking about, but when I hit a 2 iron off the tee I'll tee it basically in the ground or not use a tee at all because it makes me feel like I'm hitting down/through it more which makes my path less in to out and reduces any hookage that may occur.

    I always use a tee on Par3's, with the tee poking up perhaps 1mm above the grass. But if I'm playing on a dewy morning I tee it up just a little higher so that I don't pick up too much moisture from the grass as I come into the Ball and get a Spin killer.

    • @edgamblejr
      @edgamblejr 4 роки тому

      Personally, I'd be static fitted to +1/4". Given the same swing weight, I can't imagine that it could matter what with the unevenness in a course's fairways, rough, bunkers, ... You get fit for STD or +1/2" (from the shaft wall) and then buy a build at +1/4" - does that matter?

    • @dylangray6931
      @dylangray6931 4 роки тому

      Fitting definitely impacted my game. I was playing stock irons, everything standard. I am a lanky 6'2 just a hair under 6'3. Decided at next upgrade to pay for a professional fitting. What a difference. Fitter found I needed extra length and more upright lie angle for my irons (unsurprisingly given my build). My swing became more upright, the times I topped the ball all but went away, and on level ground shots a lot of stuff that tended to drift off to the side started straightening out. If you're an above or below average height/proportioned, getting fitted makes a big difference IMHO, but you'll have zero excuse for blaming your equipment anymore! :p

    Great video guys, think I had a high tee problem on one particular short par 3, always ended up short, think it was because the ground at that area was that solid that I never put the tee fully down to where I usually tee it on other par 3s, one day I ran out of tees and couldn’t use one so hit from the ground and actually hit my usual distance and is the only hole that I don’t tee up on just to keep the strike lower.

    I don't tee up par 3s anymore. It was a psychological thing where I would thin them way too often no matter how low I teed them. I figured "I don't tee up approach shots on par 4s and 5s so why tee shots?" It has definitely helped. Of course I will still set the ball gently on a good lie. Never teeing par 3s again.

  • @Real28
    @Real28 3 роки тому

    Never really had this issue. I preferred to not use a tee for any short to mid irons because I hit down on them well enough to generate a lot of spin. I need that pinch against the ground and I've found that with a tee, I would get different enough flight characteristics that it was another variable to memorize.
    It was just easier to know off a perfect fairway-like lie, I'd get the same ball flight, distance and soon that I'm used to.
    Worked for me, did it all through being #1 man on my HS team shooting single digit handicap.
    But I get the logic here.

    These videos are amazing. Please continue doing videos using data to show the effects of all the different aspects of golf. How swing plane vs club head alignment affects start path and spin would be great.

    As Matty said about a perfect lie I never used a tee when I first started playing golf for iron shots and my playing partners asked the pro at the time about it and he said it’s totally preference but he couldn’t think really why somebody wouldn’t take a perfect lie when offered

    Can someone please explain why the teed up ball rolled 2 yards farther than the turf ball (4:10)? The teed up ball had less ball speed, a higher launch angle, more backspin, and a higher descent angle. By my math, it should have rolled less than the turf ball. What am I missing in the physics here?

    I got down to a 3.8 handicap golfer, I’ve probably not used a tee on a par 3 for 30 years now, I even went through a Laura Davies phase of using driver with a bumped up piece of ground…… it basically helps me to play down into the shots so I go down and through….. my bad shots were all from lifting up and out of the shots early….. what I will say though is that on the par 3’s I bump enough ground up s that the back of the ball is clear of any grass that could get between club face and ball so I believe I get the same strike as if the ball was on a tee…..

    This a real gem fellas! This game is hard enough as it is. If you have a chance to give yourself a perfect lie even if you’re hitting a wedge to a 130 yd par 3...do it!!

    Well this confirms my thinning problem.
    too sweepy and my angle of attack honestly may be up cuz I have had a few tops in the 2 rounds I've played so far.

    I always tee the ball up when given the opportunity. On par 3's I put the tee at grass level or just the slightest bit above the grass. I also hit the ball at least 10 yards farther when teeing it up than off the ground. Much cleaner contact. Love the videos guys. Keep them coming.

    Ive tried with a tee (even with hybrid) before but for past five years rarely used tee apart from on winter mats. But on Wednesday i will try on a very small tee to see how i get on

    My uncle does the super high tee thing and still manages to thin it. 😂
    I've always used tee height to impact launch, spin, and shape. If I want a draw i'll tend to tee it a tiny bit higher than normal and sweep it a little more from the inside. The opposite for a cut; lower tee height and a more neutral path.

    In my golf club the par 3's are very long except one. 220 yards, 235 yards and 250 yards. I use a tee in all par threes except for 1 par three that is only 110 yards long but theres a lake to carry and many times the ball backspins from the middle of the green to the water if you don't use tee. So in my opinion using or not using a tee can be an advantage or it could be a disadvantage depending on the shot you actually want to hit.

    Back 'in the day' we used to just hit the ground with the club to create a small mound (grass tee) to place the ball on. Same concept as using a tee - give yourself the perfect lie the only time you're allowed. That doesn't seem to be done anymore. I guess using a tee means a few less divots on the tee box.
