Just watched this again in January 2023 after watching some very technical videos by Cowx. Love the techy stuff as you put it even though I am an 81 year old 16-17 handicapper. The nice thing about golf is you can never stop learning if you want to. Some of these factors no doubt apply to every sport where you swing a club or bat or raquet, but for sure they do in golf. One other element, as if there weren't already enough, is that the bend profile of the shaft can make a difference in all these elements, that is, same weight shaft by where one has a high or mid kick point while the other has a low kick point.
Great stuff Ian/Matt.... Makes me think about my iron setup. I play Mizuno MP-5s +3/4 Std Loft/Lie. I am a 3.7 hdcp, std iron shot is slight draw, and I'm confident up through 8-iron, fairly consistent center face contact with desired RtL shot shape. Now when I step to 7-6-5, my draw gets out of control at times. Seem like I am toe up, and hit more toe shots than center on bad swings, I'm thinking length is ok, but I feel I have to play my hands higher at address and impact to control shot shape, and I don't like this. So I feel I need the 7-6-5 bent progressively flatter to match my setup positions similar to my 8-iron (but how much??). Thanks in advance!! TXG, is my favorite YTChannel, hands down!! When I was a "handle raiser," I was fitted 2* upright and a 1/4" long shaft. I must've stopped raising the handle through the years, as I started hitting the ball out on the toe. Now I understand why (latest fitting showed standard lie, standard length). Ian's explanations are excellent, and Matt often fills in with relevant questions and insights. Thank you.
This is crazy I was fitted last Saturday with same specs for ping i525 they are on their way now but I’m scared things will go left on me I’ve been shallowing my shaft a lot better and my wrists are way better than my fitting it hasn’t sat right since I spent that $1800 5i-60 wedge 😱 I am 6’0 and wrist to floor is 36” which is green dot by ping chart but I’m nervous
@@boxerboy860 how did the clubs work out for you? I’ve just been fitted for 3 degrees upright on Ping G430’s and I’m getting worried about them. I’ve always had standard off the shelf
This was so dense with useful information in helping me really grasp the relationship between lie angle, face angle, club length, club swing weight, and where the ball impacts the face that I had to pause the video and make notes in 6 different places and watch the video a half dozen times The reason is thanks to this channel I actually have the confidence to do my own fitting and club customization. I have son Mizuno 921 Tours, and purchased some KBS Tour 119g Regular flex black nickel finish iron shafts that I will be cutting, gripping, and swing weighting them. Then, I will be taking them to a golf shop to do the lie angle adjustments. I never would have thought a month ago that I would have enough knowledge and understanding to do my own fitting. Thank you so much for sharing knowledge about the nuances of how one factor effects another and all combine to create different results. I was educating myself for a fitting, and ended up so educated that I decided to do it myself only because I am under financial duress. Thanks again, I really appreciate your channel and will do everything I can to support your work by sharing.
You do realize (I'm sure you do) that the vast majority of golfers can't feel the difference in swing weights up to 1 or 2 points. That was a study that was done at one time. I agree with everything you said about the lie angle changing the SW and also the lie angles making a huge difference in your ball flight.
These guys really give an in depth, more scientific explanation on every subject they make videos on. I really enjoy them. I think a fitting with them would be well worth the cost.
Learned from Bradley Hughes about the importance of lie angles. He recommends going as flat as you can hit properly. The flatter the club is the less the face rotates left and right when you rotate the shaft, it just points more up and down. Picture a club with 0° lie angle vs one with a 90° lie angle, rotate the shaft and see what the clubface does. A 0° lie angle the clubface can never point left or right, it can only point up or down vs a completely upright club if you rotate the shaft the clubface turns left or right drastically. Hit drivers off your knees and you’ll find it is very hard to hit it offline. Cheers
As a beginner, I'm hitting both left and right still. This analysis seems better suited for golfers with a consistently same swing. Only then it appears a swing could be efficiently narrowed down to what lie really works for them.
Awesome , even you guys found a gem for matty while making this , I would never have thought lying down angle creates more swing weight but it totally makes sense being slightly longer ,. 👍🏻
There’s no other channel out there to match the quality of this, gents - superb. I’m a 5’10” ‘high handle’ steep swinger who fights an out-to-in tendency and a toe side strike. My last three fits have been standard length, 2 degrees upright. I have a sneaking suspicion now that my swing needs to change fairly dramatically or a slightly longer club would help. Hmmm...
It's funny because I was talking to my pro about getting a custom fit for my irons. While talking I brought up lie angle and he noticed that I had longer arms and would probably need my clubs to be flatter. Then this video pops up when I got home and made me feel like you guys knew what I was thinking.
Viewed this video again as I had purchased set of i210s about year ago via static fit (6’3” tall, long arms, so got 2 degree up, half inch long), however, still not consistent. Went to club champion 2 weeks ago , after fitting w my swing and body type, going to standard lie, standard loft. Reinforces need to get expertly fitted!! Huge difference.
Fascinating guys!! Very informative. I’ve been guilty of just bending clubs upright for my 6’2” height and not really factoring the length issue nearly enough. Swing weight changes too was interesting. Just more information to go into a fitting with to make sure my fitter knows at least as much as me now. Lol
I am getting my 4-8 irons up 2 degrees like you had stated (6’2” as well), but I had 1/2” added in my iron shafts prior. I was pulling a lot of shots. I found the PING chart that gives a general direction based on height and ‘wrist to floor’ measurements. I am hoping this offsets, but i was wondering if you had experienced good/bad since you had the adjustment(s).
@@adamdryke7023 I was fit recently into a new set and since I went graphite shafts (53 with a bad back) they came 1/2” longer than my previous set and I only fit to 1 degree up with the extra length. The static Ping charts always fit me more upright than my swing actually needs… btw
Matt the graphics visually representing what you guys are talking about are an awesome touch! Helps me further understand what you guys are talking about. Nice work!
I’m shocked at how much this explains for my set up. I usually go *2 upright but on stock clubs I do tend to be a little off the heel with an occasional shank. Once they are upright my strike is more center but I had always assumed it was more a mental/confidence thing. I never would’ve thought there was an actually technical explanation for this. Unreal! Great video!!
Wow. Boys, your vids just get better and better. This is so interesting to me, recently bought some classic Mizuno mp53s, regripped and bent up 2 degrees as per my old irons but my toe strikes especially in pw-8 was baffling. Just assumed it was me getting used to them. Just checked the lengths. All clubs 1/4 shorter than previous titleist irons. Goes to show, getting fit is critical. Thanks gents. Looks like I'm off to reshaft the full set. Ha ha.
I'm 5'10, knuckles to floor 28.5". I've always played a standard lie, which statically sits a bit on the heal. My ball flight is a high push draw,. My dynamic face angle feels open to the line even when I line up with it at the target, effectively adding loft, even when my path is enough inside out to compensate. I'm going to an iron fitting soon to replace my old and loved '84 Hogan Apex PCs. Looking at Mizuno MP-20 MB, because it's the only club I've hit that feels better than the old Hogans. When trying them out, I found I was having a low toe strike tendency, which I don't get with my Hogans. We'll see if my fitter is able to work on this effectively. Hopefully, I can guide him some based on what I've learned from your channels. Great stuff guys.
ok, I'm thoroughly confused... I would have expected more upright to = more left miss. I didn't account for the lie angle being more upright also = shorter club. Applicability for me is that I tend to miss left with all my clubs except my 7i. I thought I was probably in need of a more upright lie angle on the 7i and flatter on the rest to move that back to the center but... I'm going to watch this again to see what I missed. EDIT: I forgot we are looking at a lefty and the strike/flight logic is back-asswards... ignore my previous comment... I'll be over in the corner eating glue.
Gday Ian and Matty , loving all the vids through lockdown , this stuff is word boys , you guys have truly changed how people think about buying and building club sets , and this subject is crucial , until you guys started I knew about lie angles a loft and had sets adjusted slightly but basic , my gamers I go pretty much around when you guys started up on here are Miura Ltd type D blades with PXG gen 2 woods , the irons run I 95 steelfibres and I put em all through a simulator for loft tweeks and lies , Guys this has been the single biggest change to my scores lowering , they are lasers , the gapping is consistent and the strikes are less often biting or grabbing through impact . If I hit it offline I know it’s me for sure and not the gear . Thanks guys you are making a difference .
Love it..what a great video. I was fitted last week. My irons and wedges are being chachanged to 3 degree upright to stop me leaking the ball to the right. It all makes perfect sense 👌
I fitted myself on DNA system for a set Wilson v6 and the fitting came in at 1/2longer 1 flat kbs 120s .when the club came in they were only 1/4 longer. So I sent them back .they sent a new set the same .wasn't happy but the Wilson rep said try them. if no good i will get them changed. But they are perfect. It makes sense now. thank you.
Very interesting. I have just been fitted 2* upright and half inch longer. My clubs that I use now are not fitted but I guess this explains why I find them toe side at standard length and 1* upright
Best thing I have ever done: finally adjusted my lie 3 degrees flat and my life is great. It feels so great. Especially with the wedges they go for The pin now and are not as random now. 😎👍🏼 And yes... my clubs became To Short after doing that...
They're saying that if you flatten your clubs, they effectively become longer--not shorter. So your clubs should be longer now that they are adjusted 3* flat.
This is the kind of stuff that puts you head and shoulders above the rest. My strikes are generally toe side so next time I go for a fitting I'm sure going to pay more attention to the lie angles of my irons. Thanks and keep them coming!
Good stuff fellas. I have been fitted a number of times over the years and never once was it presented that lie angle adjustments affect length or swing weight. It makes total sense though after watching this and thinking back on how clubs felt when changes in lie were made. Thanks!
Hey guys. Matt I hope you see this hope your doing well my friend. I understand exactly what’s going on in more ways then one. I hope you are spending the time where it matter and strengthening you improvement areas. The world can be harsh and our minds are challenged. I’m praying for you. You are a solid lad I hope the best for you bud!! Cheers
Glad I found this video again. I’m playing my Mizuno Mp20 at 2 degrees flat. But, I default to a very inside takeaway and I tend to stand too far from the ball. This all makes me very sweepy. I’ve also strengthened my grip quite a bit. In all, I tend to move the ball much too left. I’m going to experiment with adjusting the lie upright. I’m thinking going upright will allow the club to play shorter, moving me closer to the ball and helping me to more instinctively mitigate or eliminate that early inside move.
Your channel really is a dream come true for gear nerds =D Only issue is that I will never find a fitter here that works as much in those details as you do...
I find this really interesting! As a 17hcp (been down to 11 half a life time ago) I have made changes to my swing towards Bryson’s side of things. Had doubles of my 7 iron and 56 degree wedge (I’m playing one length btw) and decided to have the duplicates lie angle changed from ~62 degrees to 72 degrees. Obviously, that makes the shaft way too long, and I haven’t adjusted that and only tried it a little at the end of last season. What I did find was that I hit the ball much better. Even though the club was shorter, weight was different, I felt like the consistancy in my ball striking improved a lot. Like having the ball that close to me forces me to swing really tight. I consider changing the rest of my irons and wedges. Since they’re all same length already, it makes sense to keep the lie angles the same too. I will experiment with it during the spring (in the middle of Sweden where I live). For the record, I have noticed that the ball tends to go more left than I’m used to. But I think adjustments can be made to control that. Either by aiming differently, ball position in the stance or… something! I like to experiment, and although my circumstances are far from ideal (with a ~3-4 month season), it’s so much fun to find new ways to do things. I don’t necessarily need to do things like Bryson, but he sure has made me more curious about the game, and the will to find what works for me. I’ve played golf (on and off) since I was 10 and I’m now 36. These past 2-3 years have been the most interesting and motivating yet!
Another great video! I do find it funny how I need to essentially interpret the opposite of what Matty needs. I tend to have a out to in swing path, slightly open face, and I hit towards the heal side. So it's fun to listen to what Matt needs to cure his slight draw and toe side hit...and reverse it. Such great content from you guys.
Add all these little nuggets of knowledge and you have yourself a knowledge bomb! :juice: This is will incremental for me going forward and really show the importance of being fit properly and having your clubs built to match your fit! Definitely sharing this one out to all golfers I know! Excellent content as always, stay safe!
I really hate that I watch TXG sometimes..... I watch all these videos and then want to tinker with my fitted clubs (granted it was a good fitting but it wasn't this). I just want to play with every club and optimise them. Thank for the invaluable knowledge Ian and Matt
Love your videos. I am actually going to my first fitting this coming Saturday. Your videos have really helped me learn what to ask and why the fitter might change certain things. It should really help the fitting be more productive.
So, just to confirm, adjusting the lie UP will cause the ball to pull more, shorten the club, and make the club feel lighter? (See 1:48) Conversely, when adjusted FLAT, the ball will push more, lengthen the club, and make it feel heavier?
Really awesome guys, especially how it affects swing weight. I think you are right on Ian, that there are layers of things that can affect club performance. Wow!
Wow I’ve learnt something watching this, great video. I’ve just changed my Mizuno irons to Titleist T100 because I couldn’t get the toe up enough, I tried them for the 1st time yesterday and noticed I’m more left than before.
This is the exact reason I need to get back in to my local fitter (club champion) and have them take a look at all my lofts and lies. I hit my 8, 9, pitch, and wedges great, but my 4 and 7 irons are disasters. 5 and 6 are hit and miss
will a player with long arms (relative to their height) need to cut down the iron shaft or flatten the lie angle? (or both. ) what is the best approach here? if anyone has a good process/approach i would trust you and your team-
Absolutely Fantastic Video, really gave me a realization moment. Having got new clubs 6 months ago I wish I had seen this video now. I'm quite tall (6'3") and got fitted for an extra half inch and std lie angle but always seem to draw the ball far too much especially with my lower lofted clubs and Always wondered why my posture did not look correct when looking in the mirror at myself. Definitely should have gotten my clubs to be a little more upright to help with having to bend down so much to get low enough to hit them correctly. Thanks guys, great job!
Ordered a set of clubs 1 degree flat because I hit a draw and my miss is an overdraw. Minute I got my new irons I was hitting a baby fade and could feel myself hitting most my shots dead middle on the face. Crazy how that small difference helps.
Makes so00o much sense, my clubs are 2 up and I fight the toe strike all the time and my irons are always going left. With 7 iron I'm drawing the ball (closed club face and tow strike) 12 to 15 yards at 175 - 178 yards. Tons of help with this one
I think this video has just made up my mind on changing the length and lie angle of my clubs. I bought standard length and lie clubs from Ebay and I suffer from pulling it left, heel strikes, and even sometimes the club looks really closed at address and I feel I have to correct it. Being a bit shorter in height than average I think getting this change is long over due.
Since you guys are looking to expend the popularity of your ig page I would suggest to put TXG in the page bio. If you type txg on the instagram search bar your page don’t show up. 🤘🏼
Great video as always. What happens with turf interaction when you go from 4 degrees upright to 4 degrees flat ? Did Matt feel like the heel was getting stuck in the ground when upright and toe in the ground when flat ?
Great video guys, I'm an Engineer and I really need to know how things work, so I can try and fix them with real technical data, your videos are right up my alley in this respect...I don't know if you can but I would love to see yourselves do a video on hip sway (especially with driver), to understand the real negative effects of doing this..😊⛳️
Have you considered the differences in swing type? I have a 2 plane upright swing. I come down the line with mid and short irons. I come a little in to out with longer clubs (a little draw). When I hit a standard lie the toe digs in and opens the face (slice). Check the difference between 1 plane rotary swings and 2 plane upright swings.
I used to always grip my clubs at the very top of the grip. When I got fitted they lengthened the shaft of my new clubs. My grip is more conventional and I’ve more control of the flight and direction of my shots. My handicap has dropped from 14 to 6. They also adjusted my lie angle.
Last year I was fit for new G410 irons, and the fitter shortened the club by half an inch and set the lie angle 1 degree upright. What would be a reason for this recommendation? Has it cost me distance?
At the beginning of the video, you present the hot metal pro. Considering they are not forged how much they can be bended ? You’ve builded ma a combo set with these in my 4 and 5 and I was wondering if you can adjust them as much as the 919 forged. Great presentation guys ! Your developing a group of knowledgeable customers !
Ian, now let's talk about Smash Factor/Efficiency. What's an optimal number for a 7 iron or a Driver? What kind of factors could cause not to get the best SM/E out of every club. Thanks as always for the content !
Perfect timing - swing weight scale arrived today, loft and lie in transit! Thanks again guys. On a build for irons, what do you factor in for glue gram wise?
Ian, you mentioned that the lie board doesn’t really help you to get this right in a previous video. Can you revisit that in the light of this video please? I have always tested 1 up on the lie boards but am not totally convinced by this as standard lies seem to play better on the course. Thanks

So so GOOD! Definitely need a couple rewatches on this one.
It makes sense now. thank you.
Finally this makes sense on why a particular strike often occurs. Great work as usual gents!
Very interesting. I have just been fitted 2* upright and half inch longer. My clubs that I use now are not fitted but I guess this explains why I find them toe side at standard length and 1* upright
Thank you for your time describing the lie angle mystery. You always find the nuggets
Best thing I have ever done: finally adjusted my lie 3 degrees flat and my life is great. It feels so great. Especially with the wedges they go for
The pin now and are not as random now. 😎👍🏼
And yes... my clubs became
To Short after doing that...
Wow what a great video. Had no idea what impact of lie adjustment had on swingweight and length. I thought it was solely on direction. Thanks guys 🙏
Gotta watch this a couple times and take notes. Awesome vid.
I'm going to get my lie angle checked soon....be interesting to see if swing weight is mentioned
As always all your videos are great, but this one is indeed incredible! Thanks! Regards from Mexico!
Very interesting. So, if you were going to make one length clubs would you also use same lie angle throughout the set?
Pure Gold!....will definitely watch this video a few times
You boys never cease to amaze me, another phenomenal video!
Wow!
Going for fitting soon. Info was quite interesting. Thanks.
Wow I’ve learnt something watching this, great video. I’ve just changed my Mizuno irons to Titleist T100 because I couldn’t get the toe up enough, I tried them for the 1st time yesterday and noticed I’m more left than before.
How do you combat this ?
I believe if you go for a longer club the lie will become more upright therefore go for the flatter lie. Anyone else agree?
Great vid boys. Just ordered a set of Sub 70 699 Pro’s 1/4” longer 1 deg up. This video is really really good
This is the exact reason I need to get back in to my local fitter (club champion) and have them take a look at all my lofts and lies. I hit my 8, 9, pitch, and wedges great, but my 4 and 7 irons are disasters. 5 and 6 are hit and miss
will a player with long arms (relative to their height) need to cut down the iron shaft or flatten the lie angle? (or both. ) what is the best approach here?
if anyone has a good process/approach i would trust you and your team-
Awesome video covering high value information. Great Job, fellas!!
Definitely need a refresher on this video
Such a cool video! Thank you for your wisdom
More superb techs info guys.... interesting swing weight and mass info. I hit a considerable amount a bit healy on the long irons 🧐
Can I get the Ian Frasier 20 piece golf nuggets and fries to go. Thank you
Ordered a set of clubs 1 degree flat because I hit a draw and my miss is an overdraw. Minute I got my new irons I was hitting a baby fade and could feel myself hitting most my shots dead middle on the face. Crazy how that small difference helps.
This makes so much since now. Like really really ha! This is so lovely.
This dude has one crazy awesome swing. I wish I had that game !
Another great video. What's the latest on visiting for a fitting up there?
Very educational! I love the games you guys play too...but I like to learn, thank you
Makes so00o much sense, my clubs are 2 up and I fight the toe strike all the time and my irons are always going left.
What a phenomenal video!! Thanks for always dropping knowledge on us!
This is awesome guys, super interesting and great insight into fitting dynamics.
Great video as always. What happens with turf interaction when you go from 4 degrees upright to 4 degrees flat ? Did Matt feel like the heel was getting stuck in the ground when upright and toe in the ground when flat ?
These are the fine nuances why you get a fitting. It helps to go to the Experts at TXG.

Looking to upgrade my XTD Forged with 7.0s. Good looking irons.
Wowzers, what a swing !
Really interesting video 👍
What a great video! Thanks guys!
Awesome stuff guys, as always!
Another great video guys
Thanks
