When you have had cervical dystonia for years
You feel stuck
You are depressed
You have stopped doing what you love
This was the case for this young woman
And then she started taking back control
Slowly improving her ability to rotate her head again. (Over years with PT, psychotherapy and yoga therapy)
With a combination of great medical care with targeted botox and a neurorehab team
And now we are fine tuning and helping her maintain all of her function.
This week she had the most motion and control that she has ever had. And her control in the most challenging situations-with intense activity-better than ever. No one even knows she has cervical dystonia
So why are we skipping?
We have been using a lot of activities to change postural responses and otolith input:
Bouncing (especially on trampoline)
Dancing
Skipping
Moving on a tilt board or bosu ball
Postural righting responses can be used to elicit automatic head movement (especially the head tilting responses)
And why the scarves?
The external focus for eyes and head movement is awesome for eliciting automatic head movement
I personally love the scarves because they are visually so fun! And the autonomy-she picked the colors of her daughter’s college (go UCI anteaters!)
If you are looking for resources for dystonia-comment dystonia-we have a clinician cheat sheet and a NEW guide for patients, too! I will send a link to both for you.
