@@AlexLee360 We don’t think that we just don’t really care about Churchill like that. Far away from what we experience on a everyday basis. We know about Churchill as a state leader and the impact he had on the UK and within the British empire of old and yes he was also a racist, but a lot people where racist in those times because during that old days of 19th and 20th century racist thing was normalized and needed to maintain a facade and false illusion of Western European superiority.

@@onlineonlineaccount2368 I completely agree with you pal. For me I appreciate that he led Britain & their empire to survival and victory, though in a way he had to do something otherwise the Nazis would have taken over at the very least. I would like to quote extracts relating to Churchill’s humanity and greatness, from the very moving tribute paid by Clement Attlee just after Churchill’s death in 1965. He was the esteemed Labour Prime Minister, voted into power in 1945, who had worked closely with Churchill as his deputy in the wartime coalition Government:
“.......I do not think everybody always recognised how tender- hearted he was. I can recall him with the tears rolling down his cheeks, talking of the horrible things perpetrated by the Nazis in Germany. I can recall, too, during the war his emotion on seeing a simple little English home wrecked by a bomb. Yes, my Lords, sympathy-and more than that: he went back, and immediately devised the War Damage Act. How characteristic! Sympathy did
    Page 7
not stop with emotion; it turned into action......... Then I recall the long days through the war-the long days and long nights-in which his spirit never failed; and how often he lightened our labours by that vivid humour, those wonderful remarks he would make which absolutely dissolved us all in laughter, however tired we were......and I recall, too, as the most reverend Primate has said already, that when once the enemy were beaten he had full sympathy for them. He showed that after the Boer War, and he showed it again after the First World War. He had sympathy, an incredibly wide sympathy, for ordinary people all over the world.....He saw himself there as an instrument. As an instrument for what? For freedom, for human life against tyranny. None of us can ever forget how, through all those long years, he now and again spoke exactly the phrase that crystallised the feelings of the nation. My Lords, we have lost the greatest Englishman of our time-I think the greatest citizen of the world of our time. In the course of a long, long life, he has played many parts. We may all be proud to have lived with him and, above all, to have worked with him.....”
I think that says it all about Churchill and, in turn, about our education system.

I was 18 in 1968, less than 70 years after Queen Victoria (hardly a less historically significant figure than Churchill) was still on the throne. If someone had asked me then my opinion of her reign I might not have had one at all, or at best it might have been a shrug and “some good, some bad” - she was just a figure in distant history in a different kind of Britain. Asking an 18 year old today their opinion of the national leader in a war that ended 77 years ago isn’t very different. It may shock some other people, but it isn’t any more surprising that they don’t venerate a figure who, for them, is distant history any more than it was that I didn’t have any strong opinion on Victoria.

Had Churchill lost the war, he would probably be celebrated as a hero of the resistance fighting for the oppressed. As it is, he ended up on the winning side - to continue the horrible oppression (only an unspeakable extremist could possibly disagree) of the British Empire.

But if you suggest that we might have been better off out of The Great War, you get smeared as an "appeaser" or a pacifist. Besides some military technological advances, Britain gained nothing from the 1914-18 war, but we certainly lost a whole generation of fine young men, whose loss I believe still has a lingering effect on our diminished gene pool.

Britain shouldn’t have gotten involved in 1914
And as for 1939 the country was not ready to fight Germany militarily
It yet again tried to ride on the coat tails of the French in 1940
Please don’t high and mighty with me as the left was not keen on fighting Nazi Germany until it attacked The Soviet Union- when that happened the left got pious and joined fully in supporting war - the reason was the left had a lot of sympathy for the Soviet Union despite knowing of its track record against its own people
As for my loyalty I’m for England leaving the union and readopting and remembering its own culture and society that said Union Suppressed
      I’d also say no 1914 no 1939 !

I used to ask my grandson about history as it was one of his subjects for GCSE and his comments about the content of what he was being taught was bizarre and had very little to do with British history and was far more focussed on the history of medicine.

Am sorry David I went through school in 1980 i was taught history and I opted to take it as an exam subject. This was all about evidence and balancing many our assignments where to look at it from each point of view .
So he is wrong to say it did not work or children did not understand. All our subject where taught this way. Point counter point .
So to make this wide assumption is wrong I went into teaching and I continued to teach this way every ofsted inspection I was very good or excellent and I would challenge the inspector if they made an unfounded or unfair comment.
So whistle many cannot be bothered to teach there own lessons today there are still some who do not teach a preset download Google lesson
