That takes me back about 40 years when working in a TV/video service workshop. Having replaced a 63V electrolytic in a TV and working close to the board checking voltages on the powered circuit, the cap exploded close to my face! - fortunately no harm done ecept for some ringng in my ears. Examining the remains of the device more closely afterwards I could see a faint 'dot' - it was a 6.3V not 63V cap which had ended up in the wrong drawer by mistake💥 Be safe .............

Amazing video! The level of detail and expertise you showed while repairing the EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra was incredible! You really saved the day with that capacitor explosion. Truly impressive work!
At 20:06 you already knew the issue with aluminum electrolytic capacitors but you removed the MOSFET without a shield over the capacitors that also blocked the side where the heat was. I'm very happy you were not seriously injured. p.s. Anytime I've ordered supplies from your store, they are always shipped the same day. I've never been disappointed with the speed of delivery.
Is this what they mean by "pop a cap in 'em"? All jokes aside, I'm glad you posted this as a warning to others in the trade, or aspiring in the trade, that they do need to be careful around those bad boys. I hope you take some further precautions in the future (you did have the cap covered), as I'm sure your family wants you home whole and hearty at the end of the day.
You have to get an apprentice. Because you will get old one day as will we all. Now maybe you saved enough to retire and enjoy life already. But still it would be an honor to work and learn from one of the best like yourself. God & Peace be with you. We love you brother! I absolutely love this channel! Again! It is an honor to watch and learn what I wish I could do in life.
Just a heads up, once I was wearing my goggles and a cap blew and it shot right up my nose. Almost had to go to the hospital to get it out but got lucky with some skilled tweezers dexterity and got it pulled out. So just be aware, goggles are not always the only safety gear necessary...
@@thiefrules lol yeah the welder's face shield will do. It is very negligent to work on some shit like that without any protection - it's not worth losing your eyes for any job.
I have nothing but praise for Northridge fix's shop. Can you get some of the stuff elsewhere?, yes but you may have to wait a month or more from china and if something is wrong you may be out of luck. I get most of my supplies from them and when I have had to contact their customer service, they are always top notch. Also have to mention the knowledge Alex passes on is priceless. I found him when I was having a skill issues and his tricks took care of it. Alex once mentioned that his mother watches the videos only to see if he's using the fume extractor. Guess who'll be forced to wear safety glasses from now on 😂😂 Glad you are okay ❤
MB tech here. Often even the regular SMD caps can pop and shoot off the board. We had a couple of laptop motherboards that went through the BGA reflow process (and likely have been overheated). The board was under some tension due to heat cycles, and the cap that had a via under one of the pads just shot up into my face when I barely started to heat the board to solder on a QFN. Capacitors and heat just don’t go together. You can COOK chips and resistors most of the time, but the caps will remind you when it’s too hot.
Everytime I watch you, it is awesome to watch a Master @ work. I have a motherboard that I need to send to you, brand new, no power: Gigabyte x570 xtreme. What is a better time of year to send for your workload? Thx for sharing, glad your eye is OK
@@NorthridgeFix Wow, good to know, back in the day this board was the best of the best, To bad the build got delayed by the bug. Thx for the reply.... I used all the other parts on a different board and have been running it since.
What did you use as a heat shield for the caps? Would aluminum foil work well? While you were working with the heat gun close to the caps I was thinking: “the heat will get under your heat shield and damage the caps”. Glad you’re ok.
Try using the wet putty heat shield that HVAC guys use while brazing copper tubing. A little gob of that over the caps will protect them. The putty can be used over and over.
I was an avionics technician for 35 years. I've had electrolytic capacitors explode in my face. (especially if they accidentally got put in backwards. oops. lol) If I hadn't been wearing my safety glasses, I could have really been sorry!
Great video. Would the short you created with the solder blob show up as a heat spot on the thermal camera? I would have been chasing my tail with that.
Question. Time to time my solder iron gets a bit dirty and the solder get hard to stick, those little renewal tip pots that look full of lead/tin work? Instead of allways changing tips?
There is heat protecting putty on the market. Using that would prevent such issues. It's reusable (it changes color once degraded) and safe for up to brazing temperatures.
Would you ever waive the bench fee for a no fix if the person accepts to give you their device (for higher end motherboards and GPUS for example) as a donor?
Always be cautious about safety gear because they always happen everytime we felt comfortable without them🥹🥹🥹 And I knew all the safety gear quite a hassle especially for the clarity etc. And for this type of job that xneed a very strong protection maybe you can fine a light safety glass that is super clear but maybe a bit pricier… AND…I saw on another channel that a specialist on repairing graphic card they used a custom DIY made thin shield for the cap made from a beverages aluminium can and just put a keplon tape of what ever the name is so the heat won’t transfer and that also shield the side of the cap(like in this video maybe the heat come from the uncovered side) Stay safe! And healthy!
I know the feeling of a cap on my forehead... I didn't check the polarity when I replaced a small one and it popped nearly immediately when I powered the board. 🤷♂
I use amtec flux and i can attest to the color change. It will get darker over time, even sotcked away in a cabnet. Being hard to get in the past I stocked up a bit and yes they do change color over time but still more then usable. good flux regardless.
When thermally isolating chemical capacitors, you must insulate them from the top and sides as well, because they are exposed to hot air reflected from the targeted heating point.
10 months ago, a capacitor on a graphics card from the same manufacturer exploded in your face. Is this what the manufacturer intended to do to prevent repairs? 😅😅
Somewhere in your warehouse you have a gigabyte extreme waterforce motherboard waiting to be repaired. I really hope you do a video of that repair. It's not a board you see people working on.
