  • HBO's hit show Barry, created by and starring Bill Hader, returns for its third season in April. In honor of that, I broke down my favorite episode of the show - and one of the best episodes of TV in years.
    Barry. Season 2, Episode 3. "ronny/lily".

    I actually think Stovka "the Greatest Chechen assassin" was honestly Barry's future. A man who is so broken and has been abandoned by friends, family, his wife, everything Barry wants. Gone. And thus Stovka only saw su*cide as his way out of the life. But the Ronny/Lilly moral dichotomy is a great mention.

      @@TVsFinest as a brit I wasn’t as engrained in the whole snl thing as other people but whenever I watched sketches, Bill Hader always stood out - and that was as just a comedic actor. And as the years go on he’s just doing bigger and more interesting things - I can’t wait to see where Barry goes from here but I also can’t wait to see any other projects Hader involves himself in; considering the critical success of Barry I can only imagine future projects he’ll be involved in.

    • @TVsFinest
      @TVsFinest  Рік тому +4

      @@Elnont For sure. I actually read recently (while working on the Barry S3 video I posted today, coincidentally) that he has been approached a lot about directing stuff after the success of Barry. I believe he also mentioned that he and his writing partner have a feature film that they're going to move forward with after Barry wraps up. It definitely seems like he will have plenty of opportunities to do big things if he chooses to do so. He definitely deserves it.

    I love the way they framed the first fight with Ronny, most modern action movies cut so quickly and to different angles that I struggle to figure out what's going on, and it detracts from the stunt acting

    I just recently started watch Barry and I've been thoroughly entertained and suprised by how good the show is. When I got through ronnie/ lily episode it just cemented how brilliant the writers and directors are (which turns out that Bill Hader wrote and directed the ep). The humor in some parts are subtle yet over the top at the same time. It's grounded but completely outlandish at the same time. Hilarious, yet dark and gritty, and even sometimes heartwarming and wholesome. Can't say enough good things about this show

    Bill Hader wrote this episode, directed it and starred in it (Alec Berg refers to it as his 'solo album' in the middle of the season).
    He said afterwards it left him exhausted, but what an amazing effort it is and I'm so glad he's being recognized for it so well.

The way Ronnie's first fight is all effectively done in one shot, and the damage done to the room. I wondered how they were able to do that so well. What I think is so great about this episode is that it is the only episode, so far, that features just two main characters - Barry and Fuches. No Sally, no Hank, no Gene. No one else besides Loach, who only appeared for like a minute (and he wasn’t even really a main character).
    We got to see the real depth of connection and differences between Barry and Fuches, unlike the other episodes where we get distractions from other main characters.

    People who claim this is the worst episode are so wrong.
    I think people who claim it's the best are also kinda wrong. Less wrong but still wrong.
    This episode was definitely one of the best when it aired. But I would argue that every episode since got better and better.
    As for worst episodes I'd direct people to the middle of season 1 with early Barry/Sally drama and the lead up to the bum rush scene. The Taylor stuff goes a little slow for my taste but it really picks up and of ep 6. Episode 7 was where I was like yeah, I'm watching the best show on television.
    And really, from there, every episode got better and better. The first episode since 1x7 that I felt underwhelmed by was 3x3 but it was still really good. 🤷‍♂️
    Worst takes I've heard on 2x5 are the ones that are like "why are they wasting my time with this?" And "this is jumping the shark". "Bill Hader should stick to acting."
    Bill Hader has pretty much directed half the show so far and many of those episodes are among the best. He also kind of IS the show. It wouldn't even exist without him. Dummies.

      I disagree, personally, but I don't take issue with that take. Pretty much every episode is fantastic and is deserving of "the best episode" consideration. It's a consistently great series. ronny/lily just stands out to me because of how different and well-executed it was.

    • @alphanerd7221
      @alphanerd7221 2 роки тому +2

      @@TVsFinest It being different is part of the problem. Ronny is totally grounded and fit the story. Lilly is like an episode of Aquateen Hunger force showing up in the middle of Better Call Saul. It's world breaking. Now anytime I watch the show I know a cartoon ninja might show up to bet people up.
      It could have been a great episode of another show, just not this one.

    • @TVsFinest
      @TVsFinest  2 роки тому +6

      @@alphanerd7221 I viewed Lily as a storytelling device to add depth and insight into Barry and Fuches' relationship, and as an isolated and personal incident since only two people experienced it. Similar to the Pine Barrens episode of Sopranos. They're put in a bizarre situation and we see how they react when they're at their most desperate. I essentially view Lily as a motif of sorts, not so much an actual living person within the show's universe. I don't think we'll ever see her again.
      Killing Ronny was the thing that had a big impact on the actual story of the show, so I think it made sense for that to be more grounded. Lily, as a person, wasn't essential to the plot of the series and no one knew about her, so it gave them more leeway to do something unique.
      Now, if they start doing that kind of thing more often moving forward or if she reappears and is a ninja again, I think I will start feeling the way you do. If it's just that one time, though, I'm cool with it. I absolutely understand where you're coming from, though.

    • @alphanerd7221
      @alphanerd7221 2 роки тому

      @@TVsFinest Why not do it more? They have already broken the realism of the series. Maybe Odin will appear to Barry next. You can't earn back the premise of a grounded story after something like this. This is a perfect example of Jumping the Shark.
      Also, how is Fuches all the sudden dumb enough to glue his hand to the wheel? He's made some bad calls but that's absurd.

      @@alphanerd7221 lol. Yeah, I think we just view/interpret the episode very differently, and that's fine. I'm sorry it didn't work for you.

    Is this channel just pr for HBO. ? i find their fondness for justifying sociopaths tiring and not great for an uneducated society looking for examples.

      I uh... I just make videos on shows I like lol
      And if your takeaway from Barry is that the showrunners are justifying Barry's actions, I don't really know what to tell you.

      @@TVsFinest because I'm kind of right. They just announced a show about a sociopath baby. The last season of Succession made a point to show Logan's scarred up back so we understood his evil ways. 10 years of Tony Sopranoes psychotherapy really grounded him.

      @@jeffreywillstewart Well, I can promise you that I won't be watching or making a video about a sociopathic baby show.
