I keep telling people I know that they HAVE to watch this show, and they don't, and now I understand how Breaking Bad people felt when they couldn't get their friends to watch it (until everyone was talking about it and they suddenly become interested)
We share the same pain friend. It can be frustrating watching such good storytelling go unappreciated by the general public. (e.g. Hannibal, Deadwood, etc.) I can't prove it but, I theorize that there is an inverse correlation between two factors: the better a show is, the smaller it's audience gets.
This show reminds me so much of atlanta. Doesn’t surprise me considering that they share the same directors on some episodes, Hiro Murai. They balance realism with insanity, surrealism. Both these show make you say “wow this is so realistic” and “ what the fuck is going on” at the same time
Makes me think of the episode where Paper Boi gets robbed, and then he runs into the forest and finds that crazy old man who eventually tries to hunt him down with a knife. It goes from realistic and terrifying to completely insane.
I really appreciate that they didn’t make it a typical Hollywood explosion with a big fireball and all. It was how most explosions are meant to be. Short and violent without necessarily being flashy.
My life will never be the same after: "If I suck balls, you are king of suckballs mountain!" "Shut the f*ck up." "Aaaahhhh" Peak dialogue that will stick with me until I die
This is one of the few shows which are actually funny based on their writing alone, warranting actual, genuine laughter. Without overly relying on over the top gags and quips for cheap laughs. Keep up the good work!
I never noticed how minimal the editing was until you pointed it out. It’s almost like we might be asking too much from editors. In Barry the quality is so visible because the decisions are visible. So since all the decision are made, the depictions the editor gets to make are more about when is the right moment to cut. I feel like there’s a give-the-artist-the-space-to-craft kind of approach to the production at Barry. Which makes sense for a show about an actor
the aesthetic and appeal of the action, in my opinion, comes down to one simple premise that Hader points out many times in bts interviews: We do not want to look cool. And if we look too cool, we redo it.
I mean besides Barry and Better Call Saul what high level acting shows are even on television anymore?? Also thank you for covering Barry I wish more people spoke about how amazing this show is
Succession, Severance, The Boys and Hacks are other great shows rn that are just as good. That being said, Barry is definitely one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I agree 100% that people need to talk about this show more! I can’t believe it’s not watched by more people
Besides the ones SwimmingRobot described, all of which I sign under, Yellowjackets also has a stacked cast with not a single bad note, if you enjoy thriller and survival horror would definitely suggest you check that one out.
The van on the landing strip scene also sold me on the show for good. The setup, the way the action unfolds, the sound design and editing are above some of the best action movies.
I really like how they make bullet flight so realistic cause it really pulls me into the scene. A lot of Hollywood productions make gun fights seem too fun and there’s no real sense of fear or jeopardy. But I think a combination of camera work and SFX makes bullets seem to whiz through objects with terrifying speed and penetration in Barry. It’s such a good show.
The nursery takedown made me laugh so hard; I still crack up every time I see it. I was forced to watch the show on my phone with AirPods while binging it over the last 7 days, and I was thrilled to find the sounds design and surround sound to be simply amazing. I also appreciate how when the credit roll it’s not some irrelevant song. Sometimes it’s just silence, or quiet woods sounds.
@JessiFrenzel Oh no! You've gotta watch it on a good quality screen! When the motorcycle girl in shooting from/through the roof, you can see a car fall to it's axles on the showroom floor, and bullets ricocheting off the car in front of the dealership to hit some of the neon lights on the building. You can also make out 'Barry' standing in front of the employees watching the action unfold, then walk away.
The script and comedy of barry is so unique and unlike other shows out rn the comedy is unexpected, absurd, creative, and the words they choose is so human. Its not like usual comedies or sitcom w a punchline and actual joke, instead the comedy comes from how absurd the events are, how barry is autistic af, and how lucky barry is or how stupid the people around him are. The show embraces the stupidity, the surreal, the absurd.
ngl I didn't think I was going to like the third season from the start, I was genuinely on Barry's side until he screamed at Sally and then the show made me realise oh, he's actually not a good guy at all. The show is genius. Great show. Great video
Some of its action reminds me of Sicario, the way the sound effects are perfected in both. The bike scenes remind of The Place Between the Pines. Both directing masterpieces.
Well one thing I've definitely noticed with the action is that even in scenes where Barry is in full power like the temple shootout, they never make him look cool. Like he's definitely shown as skilled and dangerous but I never think "man this scene is so cool, man he's such a badass", he's never really glorified for all this violence, he's just there killing people. And I think that's one of the ways they keep people from idolizing Barry like people often idolize other vilain-type heroes.
Eh. He kinda does. A bit. And that's ok. I think though you often enough get the impression of it being a tragic outburst. The war thing. Choking Sally not so playful on stage. Shooting the best sharpshooter that idolized him. In some sense he literally is cool because we see noho Hank and gang using fancy gadgets etc while Barry gets it done no dramatic speeches or anything.
You did a perfect job of explaining why this show gets some people hooked, but Barry reminds me of shows like Mr. Robot that get relatively low attention from the general public despite the quality of the work. It's weird how the same people who went crazy for Breaking Bad are overlooking this.
HBO sucked at promoting this marvel of a show! Plus, knowing that Bill Hader conceived this show back in 2015 (only 2 years out of SNL) is unreal. Everybody keeps talking about how he copied Pine Barrens, BB or Dexter - from that long ago?
Not quite the same level but I'd like to recommend The Righteous Gemstones in that it's a hilarious comedy with actual great drama and is often at its best when it leans into its action thriller sensibilities
Interesting! The premise of the Righteous Gemstones never caught my attention, but I've been hearing good things about it, will definitely give it a chance down the line.
Definitely agree with everything you said!! On top of that, the absolute absence of glamorized violence (cool music, super cinematic shots) like another comment mentioned absolutely lends itself to building Barry as a character you’re definitely not supposed to see as a cool, badass antihero but as a guy who tried to change but keeps falling back into awful fucking decisions (and yk, commits actual murder). The realistic violence on top of a background with absurd situations just makes it silly to watch, which it is, but it also makes violence feel more heavy, and all of it does have actual consequences.
During the bum rush scene, though the bullets would hit the truck at about the same time if not before you hear the shots, hearing them before they hit was I think a super awesome choice. Gave me the impression of how Taylor’s unprofessional, overconfident, gung-ho approach was such a non-problem to professionals in the crime world. He comes screeching in, screaming, blasting Pantera, and they get calmly taken out from a distance by criminals who know how to handle a surprise.
Actually, I was very sceptical about the 3rd season at the beginning. But in the middle of it, I started to think that every new season of Barry is better than the previous. However, I think they should have stopped at season 3. I think there's nothing to explore in characters more there, and I just don't want this show to disappoint because right now it's just perfect.
3:10 watch the rear view mirror ... 5:00 watch what blows up into the air & lands all over the cop car! So much for the heroin being well-hidden! :D 10:59 I'm pretty sure that's Fairfax, with all the palm trees lining it. Same street as Canter's Deli in season 4. :) #BillHader

The way they approach the absurdity of situations makes me think they are influenced by the Coen Brothers as well. They both make me laugh and cry.
There is an interview with Bill Hader where he says he ows everything to the Cohen brothers, forgot the exact one but he's inspired by them
