My man went to Germany, Finland and Artic Circle two times in a couple of days! Absolute machine:D
Bjørninator. 😂
You forgot Thailand 😉 But in the interest of clarity, I would point out that he flew to Finland and Thailand. The day he makes the roadtrip from Norway to Thailand, that'll be when EVs have TRULY arrived 😅
Also it'll be when it's safe to drive though Iran, Afghanistan or Russia 🤔
Awesome to view another “old style” Bjørn road trip video, complete with Map & Stats for each segment and Bjørn’s “classic road trip” music! 😀
Plus local food reviews!
This could be indeed normal. Page 291 in the owner’s manual:
“When charging multiple times in succession using DC, e.g. during a longer trip, the charging capacity is temporarily reduced as needed to protect the high-voltage battery.”
I didn't expect that to happen. A rapidgating Beaver? What the heck...
I saw the same charging issue on my 2100-mile road trip from Texas to Iowa and back to Texas. I documented the whole trip in a spreadsheet. The issue started when I reached Fort Worth on my return. I was staying over a couple of days visiting family. On my return home near Houston, the charging issue was gone. Everything was back to normal.
You should try the Helsingborg - Helsingör ferry next time instead of the bridge between Sweden - Denmark. The ferries there are actually electric, just as the cars you are testing. Charging while people get on and off at each side. Pretty cool.
I was out running errands in my Model Y today and I was thinking, I really feel like a Bjørn road trip video. I come home and here it is! That opening music always puts me in a good mood. Thanks Bjørn!
After 5 sessions the amperage is reduced to 50%. The reduction of speed was lifted in my car I think 24 hours after the last fast charging session.
And I, who have ordered this car, am strongly considering canceling it after seeing this. I usually drive on holiday from Sweden to the south of France. and this would have been a disaster for me. Hope BMW gets a handle on this problem and solves it ASAP. For this is a great Disaster. Thanks for another great video Björn
Its the German Hummer of energy efficiency! Good job finding the new charge limiter cheat software. Better not use this car for longer road trip then.
Bjørn, you are the best. Great content, funny, and your soundtrack is getting awesome. Greetings from Chiang Mai, I'm discovering this gem of a place.
having a guy that knows what he is doing just drive the car available on the market is worth a lot
LOVE the opening blues guitar. The video is great too! :)
15:20 is a huge Ionity location, not like the ones in Germany with 4 x CCS and 1 is always broken ;)
Nice video Bjørn.
Nice to see you In Denmark again..
Thank you!👍 Nice to see you back on that roadtrip🌹
Hope you can do it in Fiat 500 e with 15 inch tyres and normal roof😆
Best looking EV made! Picking up mine( well, our driving school's) i4M50 before christmas, and can't wait driving it.
Best looking, are you kidding? Looks like a rabbit
That butt ugly front though......
@@davedyer3654 Could you give me an example of a better looking EV? Yes, I agree, the front could be improved in design.
The charging power reduction issue is actually mentioned in the manual. Someone on the livestream found it. It says something along the lines of: "Charging power may be reduced after multiple consecutive DC charging sessions". So it isn't really a bug, it's intended to protect the battery from too much fast charging. But IMHO it's stupid to try to do it this way.
It’s a “feature”
I can understand limiting the charge speed if the battery temp was high, But if they are all still within safe levels why do it??
Seems odd but can only assume the engineers knows a little more than the average armchair expert youtube viewer, me included. Will be good to see how the current gen of EV's hold up over time, now that they're much more mainstream and with lots of different manufacturers
@@orangeman3343 There is some experience already in that field and it is accessible online:
1. The „i4 approach“ to battery protection is quite uncommon in the industry. Charging power reduction is based on factors like temperature, inner resistance, age in most cars, but rarely on a fixed number of consecutive charging sessions.
2. The only logical explanation for a design decision like this to me is the intention to limit high power charging during the lifetime of the car altogether. In other words: BMW thinks the usual charging power is too high for always charging the car at this rate. As we have no exact information on battery chemistry, BMS behaviour, temperature management, or other critical factors, the reasons for that remain subject to speculation.
3. The exact parameters and circumstances of this behaviour are still unknown. How many charging session with which delta-SoC in which timeframe at full speed are allowed, before power is reduced? How long does it take to „heal“ the situation before the car goes back to full power? Are there any other factors, like running HVAC, external or internal temperature etc. that affect this?
Maybe there are i4 owners out there who can help finding answers?
We don’t know if it is stupid or not…But it is there for a reason
Bjorn, could you please do a video on the cost of charging in Noway? I have read an article on Facebook and took this part of it:
- With these prices, we do not recommend people in Oslo who depend on street charging to switch to electric cars, says Secretary-General Christina Bu of the Electric Car Association. Now she asks the municipality to justify the claim that the new prices only cover costs.
I love watching Bjørn bite into a burger, we need a supercut of Bjørn burger bites😀
Nice thing about EV, power naps in comfort 👌
If you refill your ICE car the pump speed at the gas station will be reduced after the third refill. It's the BMW penetration counter.
very epic bjorn
I’ve had an i4 M50 for 6 months now and although I love the car there’s a simple issue that comes up again and again and that is the range. I recently drove from my home in wirral(UK) to Stirling in Scotland and despite being light on the pedal and sticking to the speed limit/ keeping the HVAC low etc I could only get 200 miles out of the car.BMW SAYS 330 miles.
This is simply not possible in real life conditions.
I do not want do defend BMW here, but aren't 330 miles the combined WLTP consumption, which only include a small portion of the highway? Und the measurement is being done without HVAC and at 18 degrees Celsius? I mean this is how the test cycle is done and this is not a problem of BMW.
If you drove mostly on highway, at low tempretures (you said recently), with heating, then 200 miles is awesome for any modern EV car? Just have a look at Bjorns tables, there are not much cars, which can do this, outside Tesla.
And one more thing: M50 is not a car made for maximum range, the one for it is i40 version, which efficiency is really close to Model 3 values.
Also get the 18” wheels for best efficiency
the 2024 i4 Xdrive40 is the best option for range 👍
Only here for the Norwegian Blues tunes... so good, but Mr Nyland is kinda ok too.
Check the coolant level^^
The 6 x 300 kW chargers at Burger King in Busdorf are still not operational for many month now.
Just a note, those broken Allego Efacec chargers there will highly likely be replaced with 300kW Alpitronic Hyperchargers during the next months. Efacec simply is always broken (never saw a working one which actually delivered the power) and Allego nearly replaced all Efacec stations in Germany. There's only a small amount (like those ones) left. But at least on that site you have a 150kW Alpitronic too, better than nothing.
Did you ever watch the episode on CarManiac when he bashed Efacec😂He got soooo fed up with them😅
Beaver Leaf rapid gate 🤣
The SOC in the app might be the BMS SOC. BMS SOC and displayed SOC in most cars are equal around 65%.
Waiting real high speed video!
32:00 - It depends on where you are in Germany - in my area they are called "Wiener Würstchen" or short "Wiener" - which literally would mean vienna sausage :-D
Another great video on a route I would like to do one day from UK. Don't know whether to blame you Bjorn or thank you as following your videos in 2021 I went out and bought an ENiro 3 last Nov and was wondering how it would compare time wise on the same trip. The eniro charges slower most of time but is a lot more efficient, nearer 3.9/mile Kwh compared to the BMW 1.9/mile kwh and will still travel in comfort at 70mph.
33:00 here we can see how he makes it without sleeping so long!
Consistency : not checked !
Legacy automakers for the WIN ! (But just for 600km, after the charging gate happens !)
what was that shipping gig he use to do back in the day. Solid vibes.
next video - bjorns eating tour of europe :) takk!!
Will you check out Seed & Greet Ladepark in Hilden if you're in germany :D ?
Hi Bjorn, always like your video's! I am thinking of ordering the i4 but especially this video about the i4 made me hesitating. Reason is that the slow charging after a few times. The biggest reason for me not driving EV is because I go often on the German autobahn to the south. The BMW leaflets says full (80%) in max 30 min but you have shown the opposite. I don't like to wait all the time 60-90 minutes because it doesn't charge full speed. Have you found the reason already why it was charging all the time so slow ?
Humm!!!!!
Des nouvelles bientôt des Nio ET7 et 5 ?
Merci
In sweeden they also calls it "Jungel-Korv"
Perfektes Deutsch!!
I'm curious what happens with the charging if you put in the entire route and let the car figure out you're doing a roadtrip..
I can see how a producer wants to limit fast charging, to keep warranty.. but on the other hand.. if you buy it it's yours?!
19:16 I might have heard this as the "beaver" instead of beamer. But maybe that was intentional.
Is this the opposite to arctic circle, 2000 km. Almost the same length.
29:27 47 kW only at 46%? :O
Nein! Nein! Nein!
Does the music remind anyone else of the Blues Brothers. Kept expecting loads of cop cars to chase you.
It was lagging because it was updating the map if you look at the top it says map update completed
Maybe the coolant level is low again ... 🤣
hopefully, thailand is like that also but other EVs will complain cause is not a tesla at a tesla super charger :D
You should try using your Android phone to translate the signs with Google Translate;).
It is gulebøj in Norwegian ;)
Brot = bread
Brötchen = bun
but yeah, your german is good ;-)
Bjorn you are awesome! I was supposed to sign the contract to order my i4 eDrive 40 on Monday but now I am chickening back. Thanks for this test!! It's just weird that rapid gating did not happen on your 1000km challenge with the edrive40. Verdict: Tesla is still awesome for long distance traveling. Take care.
Amazing how legacy automakers still fail to beat Tesla. I'm still waiting to see that "Tesla killer" everyone is talking about
@@darekmistrz4364 Tesla beats the i4? The i4 is in every possible way that matters miles better. Quality, looks, no rattling, no wind noise, HUD, cooled seats, better in self driving, doesn't look like a retarded duck, no cheap looking plastic seats. In what way is a Tesla better? Are you crazy??
Not sure if chickening out is the right approach. How many times would you be charging this often in a row? I guess BMW’s approach fits 95%+ of the buyers…
@@SuperHumhum I assume you must be from USA because in Europe we don't have Teslas that were built by blind people. Come to any Tesla dealership in Europe and see how cars look just after unloading from transport from factory - they are perfect and people barely can report anything.
In regards to looks BMW looks horrible, it was designed for China because that is what current BMW target is. China loves those big front ends and flashy buttons and stuff like that. I prefer well designed minimal interior.
It's funny that even with all that money and experience BMW can't make a better EV than BMW. BMW i3 premiered in 2013 and BMW is still so far behind Tesla it's unbelievable. I will definitely not support bad company with bad technology and bad results.
I agree it’s odd that this never showed with the I40 E drive on the 1000k run. Maybe it only applies to the M50? If so maybe the battery isn’t the only thing being protected?. Even if the I40 did behave like this I think the extra range / efficiency would render it a non issue. I wouldn’t let it put you off buying the car.
What happened to part 2? Are you still there charging?
In Denmark it is "en banan"
Hola!
Can you drive Mercedes eSprinter or Renault Kangoo E-Tech
Man your stop is too frequent! Should drive at least 2 hours.
I was thinking of maybe changing my model 3 perf in to a i4 M50.
But then i remembered that i4 is a 4 series. Its not built as an ev from the ground up. So I got sad and I changed my mind :/
Not worth to swap Tesla unless it has 800V battery pack, V2L and heatpump. Anything else is not even close to Tesla. Do You know that Tesla has highest margins amongst all carmakers? It's because these cars are so good, that they still sell "overpriced" because competition barely exists. If competition gets "better", Tesla will lower prices and it will still be on top of market.
Wow, that charging speed reduction is ridiculous. It won’t affect that many people, but it’s still stupid that they’re doing that rather than designing a battery that can be charged repeatedly at a decent speed. It’s not like it’s impossible since many other manufacturers are charging at those speeds or more without a limit (Porsche/UDI, Tesla, Hyundai/Kia/Genesis, VW MEB is really close)
Only degradation test will tell the benefit of that limit.
ua-cam.com/video/sU2VmVCEj38/v-deo.html: "Accessible only for Tesla drivers during charging". Apparently they forgot to update the sign ever since Tesla openend up the SuC sites. So non-Tesla drivers could get a fine for charging there 🤦♂
Hi Bjorn! I have noticed 2 things here... 1) when the screen was lagging there was a notification "map updated" meaning there was an update running in the background and it refreshed the updated map so that would explain the lag! Seems like really bad timing thats all!
2) I noticed you driving in Sport mode! That by definition consumes more battery! Even when I had the 420d on the highway driving in comfort with cruise control at 120kmh my consumption was 5.5L and leaving everything as is cruise control at 120kmh and just clicking sport the consumption jumped to 7+ and was always higher!
When could the car change on Tesla cahrgers
Already can, even preheats!
Is it correct that the battery mainly suffers from FULL charging? If you DC fast charge from, say 10% to 60% , that hardly wears the battery down, right? So BMW should (if it must) only limit full charging, say to 90% or so ?
Each cycle is stressing the HV battery. It's probably worse to charge twice to 50% than once to 100%.
@@latlak Disagree. OR: I think that's very unlikely. Otherwise the EV manufacturers would not install the charging curves that drop off quickly after 50% : that is to not overstress the battery.
_"You may be wondering why your EV's charging speed slows down when your battery is around 80% capacity. No, your battery is not broken. It's just your EV's way of maintaining health and longevity. Charging increases the temperature of EV batteries, and the higher the amps and voltage, the more heat is generated."_
LESSS GOOOO
I know a little german........
He is sitting over there ! 😉
wow, didnt expect that slow loadingspeed. I better not buy that one. Thx Bjorn for the test
I know your pain. I travel a lot between Denmark and Poland. I spent usually 13h to make 920 km. I drive with Tesla S 2017 and charging speed is annoying. Some chargers in Denmark are not so fast as they are in Germany even if there is label 150 kW :). My Tesla also is slowing down so much after 50%. They said: '''Sell fossil car and buy EV, it will be fun they said" :).
I have have been doing the same between Switzerland and Hungary on my 2016 Model S S75D for 6 years now. Currently over 230.000 km on it. 1050km takes 12.5-13.5 hours but I still think this is the best car to travel long distances. Charge power peak at 124kW, reduced to 50kW at around 70%. This is where I stop charging and go. Trying to change to an i4 eDrive40 but I am not yet fully convinced even after 2 test drives. The old Model S is still that good. You just freeze to death on the highway in the winter bc cold air is leaking in somewhere :D
Buy a new one and stop complaining. I drive 2021 Model Y everywhere and it doesn't have this issue.
@@darekmistrz4364 „buy a new one”. I should maybe buy plane ✈️. It will even faster 😄. If for your to solve EV weak sides is to buy always never version. Sorry but I don’t have so much money like you and anyway soon we might have blackouts and you won’t charge your new Y model.
@@rockybor25 If You can afford Tesla S, then you can afford Model 3 or Model Y. I don't see any issue here.
Also I'm not scared even one bit whenever blackout happens, and if it happens I'm also not scared. There isn't anything that I should be scared of.
I think that mostly I will be the one helping others than others helping me.
@@darekmistrz4364 After having driven a Model S for 6 years now I would never (!) change to a 3 or Y. I tested the Model 3 two years ago and it's a toy car in comparison to the S. Loud road noise, wind noise, hard suspension like in a sports car and weird operation concept with everyting on the screen and so on. A year later I was sitting around in a Y at Tesla SC and was wondering why people buy these boring cars. The Model S is just superior even after 6 years.
Does Bjorn ever sleep?
Yes, when the i4 needs 1.5 hours of charging time to reach 90 %.
You'd think you'd get sponsorship with Circle K.
Isn't t it in Norway you say gulebøj?😂 I am from sweden
I love how EV in my country cheaper than petrol one. Crazy tax double the price but I'll take it
Wow not a very good "feature" by BMW... maybe there is a way to trick it? i.e. turn off the car for 5-10 min? Or is it hardcoded to receive an AC session at least for x minutes in between DC to re-enable 210kw charging?
Gulebøy - Denmark
Absolute love watching your content as I'm a Nissan env200 owner. I just don't like BMW EV content. I seems boring. But love all the rest. Tesla stuff is getting boring too. They hog all the public non Tesla charge stations. 😡
Never expect food in Northern Europe is so American
You don't put "ein / eine" before food names.
If there‘s no Tesla, what TB would choose? 🤔
Depends on use case but Ioniq 5 is pretty good
@12:30 : the lag --> of course for a car from LAGACY Automakers ! 😅
Wow, note to self: don’t buy/rent the BMW i4 M50 for long roadtrips. That 36 kW is insanely slow. Wonder what BMW will give you as the reason for this. 🤔
This will be superinteresting yes... Maybe it is a battery protection feature... Or would this make sense 🤷
What’s under the hood? Is there any storage space there?
this kind of bread is called "brötchen", just fyi
In Southern Germany we call them Semmel or Weck ;)
Oops! 🇨🇦
I3 speed, je je...
Gulebööj😂
Why is legacy software so bad?
Well well well… das BMW auto nicht so gut for the long trips. This did not show up during 1000km challenge cause this ist zher interestung :)
It's almost like BMW knew someone will be testing only first 1000km...
BMW used to be high quality in the ICE age of cars but that is no longer the case when it comes to the BEV age. I guess all good things have to end sometime.
BMW is still mainly producing ICE cars that are still the best compared to the competition. You can alway get an ICE bmw that can take you 1000km on a full tank and refill in 3 minutes.
@@luciteck Yes they still produce ICE cars but when it comes to BEV BMW is not as high quality as their ICE productline.
@@Mr820121 The quality is as good as on the ICE. The battery management is not. That's why people still take the i4 over a Model 3, they wanna have a car and not a riksha. Even with its flaws.
Still behind the flat fat Etron curve... 150 all the way.
Not Brot, but Brötchen
Oh no, another pre-production Press-car from BMW 😢

32:42 ;) facepalm
Jag blir lite orolig för din Hälsa Björn. Vad äter du för ngt? Har du blivit american? Snart blir du sjuk o inte kan ladda upp videos. Ta hand om dig vännen. :)
Remember that I don't eat burgers and other shit when I'm home... I also have a life outside of the camera view.
Press car problem ... 🤣 Again??
How in the world can a taxi driver afford an Ioniq 5?!
Very inefficient
