    Hi Rick! How do you water your plants in the cold frame or hoop house during the winter? 💦 💧 Thank you!

      You don't. For me in my zone 6 garden I don't water from about mid November until mid February. As long as you give them a good soak just before the really cold weather settles in they should be fine.

    I'm in zone 5 Nebraska, when do you recommend to plant lettuce and carrots for a fall winter harvest?
    Thanks

      I recommend you start planting about 8 weeks before your first frost and continue planting every 10 days or so up until about 4 weeks before that frost. If you would like to learn more about fall and winter gardening take a look at my course: onlinegardeningschool.com/p/year-round-gardening

      I am in zone 5, in Denver, Colorado. I just ordered my first cold frame. What can I plant right around the time of our first frost (right around now)? Looking forward to joining your class. I put a reminder to check in late November.

    Great tips/information.
    Could you advise me how to prevent slugs getting into the greens??

      For us slugs and snails are not really an issue in the winter it is too cold. If you are in a warmer area where they are active in the winter then there are a few things you can do.
      1. Baits are effective - I use an organic one called Sluggo.
      2. Hand-picking although time-consuming is really effective at cutting down the numbers.
      3. You can put out traps. Burry small containers (like a cottage cheese container) to the rim, then fill it will beer or lemonade. The slugs are attracted to it and then drown in the liquid.

      @@StoneyAcresGardening wonder if you sprayed them with water and some epson salts ???

      @StoneyAcresGardening  Рік тому

      @carolburnett8372 I don't think that would be effective. Despite its name Epsom salts aren't actually salt. Like sodium based salt that would kill slugs.

    If our raised beds are the large concrete blocks...would plexiglass covers be the best option to cover them with to convert to a cold frame? Or could we construct a PVC "box" to go around it and cover that in greenhouse plastic/agribond/multiple layers of painter's plastic tarps?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  4 роки тому

      If you are going to use plastic then you should do a hoop house instead. Plastic on flat surfaces can't hold up to the weight of snow and is also very light which makes them easy to blow away in the wind. You do need to build some type of structure to get some space for the plants to grow.

      @@StoneyAcresGardening fantastic... I have the world's smallest rental property...so I'm just trying to figure out the best option in the smallest foot print... my raised beds and trellis I do have already make the landscaper mad! But hey they are up against the house and as far out of the way you possibly can be... maybe a slight angled pvc structure? We honestly got snow 2 days last year... so up on an angle would allow more space to grow and for the snow to slide off some?

    Hello! I'm in zone 7b. Would greenhouse growing be similar to cold frame growing? I have a 10'x24' greenhouse and planning on doing containers in it.
    Thank you..

    • @bab940bess
      @bab940bess 4 роки тому

      And may also add some raised beds inside greenhouse.

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, absolutely, but growing in containers will affect your success. Crops do better in the winter when they are planted in the ground. Containers tend to freeze harder and faster even in a green house.

    • @bab940bess
      @bab940bess 4 роки тому +1

      @@StoneyAcresGardening Thank you! Logically that would happen. Instead of planting inground in greenhouse, would raised beds work, especially if I had a small pellet burner, for example, for the below freezing days and nights? I so appreciate you taking time to help me.

    If planting in Spring what would you plant?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  5 років тому +3

      Early spring or late winter would be greens. We do potatoes right around the first day of spring. Later in the spring you can use them to get an early start on warm season crops.
