I especially enjoy watching your videos because you show everything, warts and all. Most DIY videos I see have been carefully edited to show only the good parts the author wants you to see. You show us what we really may experience, thus keeping the level of frustration down because what we do seems way harder than the other authors post. Thank you.
I’m in Knoxville and got tricked into planting tomatoes and peppers 2 weeks ago. I cut the bottoms off of about 30 1 gallon water bottles. Instant green houses. Saved all my plants from frost.
Thank you! Always good to be missed :). Still working out some kinks in keeping regular video production up amongst farm life, building the school, and teaching classes every week to raise money to build said school, but we will get there!
The mobile chicken coop and fence is a great idea...to move the coop and chicken scratch area to green areas without killing off the green stuff in one permanent pen!!!
Anne, I finally tried your channel a month ago and your energy and drive makes you special and I mean that in a good way...🙂 My wife and I have a market -garden and attend 2 Farmer's Markets in Central PA. I have thought about building cold frames, though we over-winter a fair amount of veggies in low tunnels. We were at the gardens in Colonial Williamsburg this fall and they have cold frames with glass frames, but theirs goes 2 feet into the ground and they start them in February and fill them 3/4 the way full with raw/fresh horse manure and the last 1/4 with just regular soil. The manure compost heats and keeps the plants/box above freezing and slowly drops down into the cold frame as it breaks-down and then they just repeat the process next winter again.
I do a lot of work at CW, and it’s such a special place. I love their cold frames! I have since created my own twist on that idea and I can’t wait to share soon!
Thank you Larry! It's always good to be missed :). Still working out some kinks in keeping regular video production up amongst farm life, building the school, and teaching classes every week to raise money to build said school, but we will get there!
Love watching you work on your projects. We have the same reactions to a board falling or something heavy having a mind of its own. I’ve been renovating our 1995 trailer by using things on hand and/or making what I need instead of buying. Saves tons of money and is very satisfying.
Very cool project! I grew up in Vermont where we also get a couple false springs before true mud season. I recently made a little starter pot maker for my parents, since they start veggies inside. Basically you wrap strips of newspaper wound it and press the bottom on and it makes little 3” biodegradable starter pots that you can just chuck in the ground when it warms up outside. And I made it from cherry I cut down at their house! You’re giving a presentation at my woodworking club tomorrow night, I’ll show you during show and tell 😁😇
To move those awkward planter boxes, stand inside and grab under the long sides. You should be able to easily pick up and carry it without needing a handcart. I made some similar boxes, but I used plywood on the bottom and raised them on cement blocks. No need to bend over unnecessarily, save the back. Also, cut the corner braces into triangles. That cuts down on the amount of wood used, increases the soil area, and you don't have a corner sticking out ready to poke you.
When I was restoring my hovercraft, I bought a sheet of "Thermoclear" back in the early '90s. It looked just like the material you used. It was available in 1/4 3/8 & 1/2" square holes.
Hint for moving large rectangular items: Screw some handles on one narrow end. Slide the dolly under the other narrow end and screw the dolly to the item. My dolly had a center brace, and a single hole through that with a heavy-duty screw was enough. Lift the handles and roll away. Putting the handles close to the edge gives some stability. I moved some 10'x3' raised bed frames weighing about 150lbs. this way with no problem.
I grew up in Texas and I often said Texas has 5 seasons (not including any sports-seasons that's a totally different topic that I avoid as I'm non-sports)= Flood season (early spring) Early summer (spring) real Summer 2nd Summer, often called Indian Summer (fall) Fall (winter)
Thank you! Always good to be missed :). Still working out some kinks in keeping regular video production up amongst farm life, building the school, and teaching classes every week to raise money to build said school, but we will get there! These are definitely awesome tools for extending the growing season!
Bah, think like British airways, get there when ya get there. Good informative and solid content is what you’ve always done, an it’s what the people need. You’ve got help from up north fer life now. Just keep goin, yer killin it!
I live in ohio and I planted after it snowed.. I figure if the plant is planted deep enough the earth's heat will save the plants roots hopefully if we have any frosty nights they survive
Coming back to watch this a second time because I had to look at the olive overalls again. Are they the cropped leg ones from Duluth? I'm thinking about treating myself.
Hi! greetings from Vienna/Austria/Europe! silent viewer so far and i like your content. i'm absolutly faszinated by the modern homesteading movement, as i found out about it in ... let me think, when was that? i guess 2018 'ish? i guess? don't remember if you may allow ... i have a question: i've never heard of that tuftex material, so i'm curious. do you know anything about ... i mean ... if you build actual greenhouse, like an small one for a garden which a lot of poeple out there may have, and you build it with that tuftex, instead of normal glass. how good is it to keep the warmth inside the building comparring to a greenhouse made of normal glass with the same size? as you mentiond, your donkey stepd on it and it doesn't brake, so it seems to be pretty solid against damage. that would be very intersting to know. it could be decent alternativ to the heavy glass which is very fragil, as we all know. greetings from Vienna PS: my mothertongue is austrian kind of german, so there can be parts of my text, which may sound weird. sorry, i still have to work an my english. and any tipping errors you may find, i don't need anymore, you can keep it. :P
How do you protect from cooking the plants? Does the UV protection of the sheet help with that? I covered our raised bed with translucent plastic to protect from a frost. The next afternoon everything was brown and dead :(
a whole month of no Anne of all trades.... :-( Yes YOU have been missed.... A wee reminder for long absence for a month or longer time spent away.... please bring a note and signed by your mum, as to why you were gone so long... thank you. Oh and no forging your mum's signature either lol.

What? Oh noooo! Maybe try heaping some mulch or straw around the exterior so there’s a little more insulation. And Are you putting the lid on before sunset to take advantage of a little heat generation before the light is gone?

Strap or clamp the dolly to big things like that frame and the frame becomes the handle! Much easier to handle. Love your videos.

Absolutely, plus, trailering them behind the cows really helps keep the fly population down.

All that and no splinters! Job well done!
anne "startled screams" are the funniest

Hint- tie the frame to the hand truck and then the end of the frame becomes the handle for the hand truck.

Another vid by Anne, just in time. Nicely done! I really look forward to your content, Anne!
Yay, thank you!!
here in southern middle Tennessee, the rain won't stop long enough for the swamp to dry out.
Got my dose of Anne goodness! Hope you are well!
Thank you! And you as well!

So glad to hear smiles were shared! That's always the goal.
Just found your channel. Love it! Thank you! Btw i grunt, screech, moan, etc….when doing physical stuff like you moving your raised bed. 😂👍❤️
Happy to have a new vid from you, Anne! Great info as always, and timely for us in the northwoods! Cheers from Wisco!
We missed you Anne!

Great video Anne, the farm is coming along beautifully!! I'm in north Georgia and I got fooled by fake spring but I'm back on track.

Next time use c-clamps to clamp the box to the dolly ...easier and safer
hahaha hindsight is 20/20

Awesome stuff Anne! 😃👍🏻👊🏻 ...... 12 seasons! 😂
Nice video
What temperatures would you start and end with
Have a good day
Thanks
Are you using roofing screws with rubber bushing on the tough tex???
yep! but that's really mostly because it's what I had...
How do you protect from cooking the plants? Does the UV protection of the sheet help with that? I covered our raised bed with translucent plastic to protect from a frost. The next afternoon everything was brown and dead :(
That’s a great question, I vent it or remove the lid when it’s hot out
@@AnneofAllTrades Gotcha! I probably should have kept a better eye on it. It wasn't really that hot but the heat must have been amplified.
Can we get a farm tour soon?
That's a fantastic idea! I'd love to.
Won't the dead nettle grow in that frame?
The goal is to bury it deep enough that it doesn't re-root, and simply decomposes in place.
That's what I was concerned about. Chancey.
First couple of minutes I was wondering if it was a garden video or a kung fu garden video 🤣. Have a wonderful weekend
It’s gardening in corona times so must be kungflu 🙈
hahaha Adam tells me I sound like Miss Piggy saying HiiiiiiiYA! while I'm working.
Why wouldn’t you use your tractor with the front end loader to move the box?
For the same reason I could only get the soil and wood chips close to it. The tractor doesn’t fit in the garden.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
Even better if you can make veggies taste like pudding ;)
I'm so confused. We recently built a cold frame and it is almost 8* F COLDER than the outside Temps. 😢

hahaha we absolutely should.
