Kewl idea. Just a suggestion. I was part owner of a construction company in Florida, where it rains every day at noon just about. When you'r4e using visqueen, which is the plastic you're using here, take the 1x2 and roll it underneath the visqueen a few times then pull that tight when you've removed enough slack. That does a couple things. This will remove a lot of the moisture seepage, keep the wood from rotting and create an even better barrier for pests. Another trick is to use two 1x2's and loop the visqueen under the first 1x2 and over the second. That would allow you to more easily make adjustments and it braces the plastic between two breaks creating an even distribution for the plastic to be held making it much less likely to expand at the screws and tear. Another thing you can do is add a small lip with an overhang of the plastic using 1x4 strips on the three sides that don't have hinges. That will create a better run off and keep the wood under the plastic from rotting for much longer. Simple tricks to make your building last longer. Hope this helps a bit man! 😁

I've been avoiding watching this video for a couple weeks as it keeps showing up in my youtube recommendations. Afterall, how difficult is it to build a PVC hoop cover for a raised bed? Nothing to it and who needs a video? Boy, am I glad I finally took the time to watch. @@neilanderson7147 Most years we can grow from mid March till the end of October I’m the greenhouse. This year we had rain just about everyday for two months and hardly anything grew well inside and out except celery, cabbage and lettuce.

Thanks, James. I used your design, but instead of plastic sheeting, I covered it with 1/2" plastic mesh to protect my raised bed strawberries from birds (and Lincoln, my fruit-loving dog). It works great.
Great instructional. If you want something with a little more UV resistance than the white PVC, PVC conduit (gray) is rated for exterior use and will not get brittle as quick with seasons of exposure.

Great job, James and Tuck! I have made several of these this past fall using a "cathedral" shape (think two parallel uprights with a triangle shaped roof - 4 pieces of pvc) as I live in Michigan and this cathedral shape does a great job shedding snow. I'm still harvesting lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, mache and beet tops in my zone 6 garden and it's almost January! Keep 'em coming guys!

This was one of the best tutorials I have found on building a greenhouse! I wish I saw this before I assembled mine, but look forward to trying this method next year or in the fall! :D
I built the single greenhouse James. The directions are fantastic and it came out really well. Just one suggestion. When you use the clips for securing the plastic to the pvc frame I cut the clips in half . By cutting the clips in half, you can double the number of clips and secure more locations on the frame.
Here I am again 1 day after winter solstice and I’m waiting for spring again so I can get back in the garden and try it once again. Last year’s garden didn’t do well. Hoping for better luck in 2020.
Thank you for all the tips and tricks! I'm from Belgium so i do live in another climate zone, but i Learn so much from you! I just finished my first raised bed and got the pvc pipes from the store yesterday. Lets go make that hoop! 🤩 I did not find the T-pieces or the closed caps, but i'm gonne try to drill a hole in the frame itself and glue it with some woodglue. Its not too windy where i place it and i hope the plastic will also help to keep the frame in place. It' a trial and error proces i suppose, but i'm having so much fun with it! Built mine this week! One modification: after splitting a couple of plastic end caps, I just drilled holes into the 2 by 4 and slid the pipes into the holes instead. Now bring on the sun to thaw out my Vermont soil

My husband I just finished making two of these. I put floating row covers on them instead of plastic for this spring. I want to harden off my seedlings in them and I want to protect my squash and leafy greens from bugs. I’m in north Georgia so I may switch out for plastic for fall/winter crops. I loved the video. It was fast but very detailed. 👍
You can't use these to exclude bugs and still get any squash: Bees need to get to the flowers to pollinate them to get any squash. You would have to leave them propped open every day there are flowers, which with squash would be all summer! But they would be great for growing greens all winter, since they don't need pollination. Which is how the author used them.

James, thank you for this helpful how to! One question I have for you and your audience: if you have feral rabbits, rats, squirrels, chipmunks and grackles to contend with, is plastic a sufficient barrier? I was thinking chicken wire but I like the longer growing season your design would provide.
Where we sometimes get way too much rain I'm thinking that this design also allows us to control irrigation in what we call June-uary. We cover crops that we can water ourselves with our drip system instead of mother nature over doing it. Until it starts to dry out.
Followed this for two raised beds. I live in a colder humid climate, subject to heavier snow. I had to make a slight adjustment to the placement of the middle side supports. Running them under the middle half hoop eliminated the small shelf you see when placing them on the outside. Snow was building up along the side cross supports placing a lot of pressure on the connecting tape. Just sharing should anyone in a similar climate attempting this.

i have 3 hoop houses. i just use 2 layers of plastic, 6 mil cheap stuff for insulation. i used to use bubble wrap, but i can't tell the diff with just the 2 layers. if it was real cold, i would use 3 layers. also i heat mine to 40F minimum, so the insulation is important to conserve electric. another thing i use the large binder clips to fix my plastic, and unclip and store the plastic in spring.

I’ve found a different way to make the hoops using Pex Pipes they’re easier to cut and if you get 100ft roll they’re already curved. Pvc can be hard to work with.

Great job, James and Tuck! I have made several of these this past fall using a "cathedral" shape (think two parallel uprights with a triangle shaped roof - 4 pieces of pvc) as I live in Michigan and this cathedral shape does a great job shedding snow. I'm still harvesting lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, mache and beet tops in my zone 6 garden and it's almost January! Keep 'em coming guys!

This was one of the best tutorials I have found on building a greenhouse! I wish I saw this before I assembled mine, but look forward to trying this method next year or in the fall! :D

I built the single greenhouse James. The directions are fantastic and it came out really well. Just one suggestion. When you use the clips for securing the plastic to the pvc frame I cut the clips in half . By cutting the clips in half, you can double the number of clips and secure more locations on the frame.

Here I am again 1 day after winter solstice and I’m waiting for spring again so I can get back in the garden and try it once again. Last year’s garden didn’t do well. Hoping for better luck in 2020.
Thank you for all the tips and tricks! I'm from Belgium so i do live in another climate zone, but i Learn so much from you! I just finished my first raised bed and got the pvc pipes from the store yesterday. Lets go make that hoop! 🤩 I did not find the T-pieces or the closed caps, but i'm gonne try to drill a hole in the frame itself and glue it with some woodglue. Its not too windy where i place it and i hope the plastic will also help to keep the frame in place. It' a trial and error proces i suppose, but i'm having so much fun with it! Thank you and keep up the fantastic work! 🤩
Built mine this week! One modification: after splitting a couple of plastic end caps, I just drilled holes into the 2 by 4 and slid the pipes into the holes instead. Now bring on the sun to thaw out my Vermont soil

If you use they electrical piping it has u v protection and fits the 3/4 to 1/2 inch white

Well done! When I did this a few years back I learned that even with our moderate temps in Oregon, we don't get enough sun. Now that the weather patterns have changed, I might just try this again.

I would think exactly the same except the firring pieces attached to the outside of the frame instead of the top.

Great video! Great instructions! I plan on using this to make a netted hoop house for my two strawberry raised beds to keep out critters, deer and birds. Too windy where I live for the traditional plastic hoop. Zone 5, SE Wisconsin. Keep the videos coming!

My husband I just finished making two of these. I put floating row covers on them instead of plastic for this spring. I want to harden off my seedlings in them and I want to protect my squash and leafy greens from bugs. I’m in north Georgia so I may switch out for plastic for fall/winter crops. I loved the video. It was fast but very detailed. 👍
You can't use these to exclude bugs and still get any squash: Bees need to get to the flowers to pollinate them to get any squash. You would have to leave them propped open every day there are flowers, which with squash would be all summer! But they would be great for growing greens all winter, since they don't need pollination. Which is how the author used them.

James, thank you for this helpful how to! One question I have for you and your audience: if you have feral rabbits, rats, squirrels, chipmunks and grackles to contend with, is plastic a sufficient barrier? I was thinking chicken wire but I like the longer growing season your design would provide.

Where we sometimes get way too much rain I'm thinking that this design also allows us to control irrigation in what we call June-uary. We cover crops that we can water ourselves with our drip system instead of mother nature over doing it. Until it starts to dry out.
Followed this for two raised beds. I live in a colder humid climate, subject to heavier snow. I had to make a slight adjustment to the placement of the middle side supports. Running them under the middle half hoop eliminated the small shelf you see when placing them on the outside. Snow was building up along the side cross supports placing a lot of pressure on the connecting tape. Just sharing should anyone in a similar climate attempting this.

Just a thought- drill a receiving hole into the wood and either place the pvc cap inside or just use the receptor without the cap.

i have 3 hoop houses. i just use 2 layers of plastic, 6 mil cheap stuff for insulation. i used to use bubble wrap, but i can't tell the diff with just the 2 layers. if it was real cold, i would use 3 layers. also i heat mine to 40F minimum, so the insulation is important to conserve electric. another thing i use the large binder clips to fix my plastic, and unclip and store the plastic in spring.

You should put a thermometer inside of the double layered hoop house, I'm curious how cold it gets inside during the night.
Would love a temperature comparison of the double vs single to see how insulating that second layer is.
Hinged hoops is a great idea.
Maybe insulate the perimeter walls with rigid foam would extend the growing even longer.

I’ve found a different way to make the hoops using Pex Pipes they’re easier to cut and if you get 100ft roll they’re already curved. Pvc can be hard to work with.
