Glad some of the issues with the Jakl were already addressed. However, PSA does need to use a different (lighter) profile barrel. Shaving off 8 oz would be great. I own both guns. Had the Jakl for a while now and love it. Haven't got to shoot my Brn180 yet, just got the upper today and the lower is off being engraved. Thanks for this video.
The Jakl in 300BO with the short barrel and a suppressor is absolute fire. Very impressed with it! I don't know why you would buy either of those in 5.56, just stick to a standard AR for that. The Jakl's charging handle is in the perfect spot, right by your nondominant hand for super fast manipulation. The AR and the BRN180 force you to break grip to operate. With the Jakl you can stay on target ready to pop off another round.
I’d probably go with the JAKL. Just seems a bit simpler of a design. One piece piston vs multi part. Handguard doesn’t need to be removed for cleaning. A lighter barrel would be cool like you said.
I appreciate that they sponsor you and other gun tubers. But Im not a big fan of the private gun schools advertising. Because there are some expert gun smiths like school of the modern rifle, or ex-military armors. But setting an expectation that they need to pay tens of thousands for schooling before they can put their skills into practice in the field seems setting up the same cycle of never ending debt as other industries.
My problem with these online gunsmithing programs is two-fold. First, they largely exist to siphon GI Bill and federal student loan money. I’ll guarantee most of their students are using one of those two payment methods. Second, and more important, gunsmithing is a skilled trade. And like with any skilled trade you REALLY should learn it in-person rather than mostly online. I don’t care what anyone says…learning isn’t equally effective with both approaches. There’s no substitute for having an instructor literally standing by you as you learn. The last two gunsmiths I used were horrible. They seriously didn’t know what they were doing. Wanna guess what both had in common? They had “learned” gunsmithing from one of these online schools. I’m afraid these schools are likely churning out people who really don’t have a full and well-developed skill set, in turn flooding the market with people who probably don’t have much business calling themselves “gunsmiths”. There IS a demand for gunsmiths but finding one who actually knows what they’re doing is getting harder and harder.
@@fraudsniffer7280 Hand's on is the best way by far. Most of the people being churned out of these online classes should be considered Armor's, not gunsmiths.
Agreed. Honestly CST (and other schools) are set up to maximize profit and maximize GI Bill intake. They had absolutely turned CST into a cash cow. That being said, most of the instructors knew what they were doing and the real Rubicon is getting to work on actual customer guns enough times that you figure out what the hell's going on. The reality is, there are many types of guns you can specialize in and some of them you'll make money doing. You're not going to get rich repairing Grandpa's shotgun. The other fact of life that comes with going to gunsmithing school, is that less than 10% of those students will actually become gunsmiths. Experienced dedication and hard work get you there like any other skilled technical job, and there is plenty of work to be done. Pick something you love doing and specialize in that. You do it long enough and you'll be an expert.
These youtubers should not be pushing something that will get their viewers into perpetual debt. They do it for money…they could take different sponsors that wont bankrupt Americans
@@1stidvet553 Bullshit. It's a personal responsibility and choice whether or not to take on a debt. No different than taking a loan for a car or any other loan. I have zero sympathy for anyone with "student debt". Being in "perpetual" debt is a choice, no one is forced into it.

I love my BRN-180. I’ve been teased by a reliable source that Gen 3 is on the way, some of the improvements were already incorporated into the .350 Legend version.
@@DB-yj3qc indeed. Potentially more interesting than the .308 JAKL. The 5.56 JAKL is heavy. And the .308 looks like a storm boltor. So, hopefully a brn160 could be a lighter option. Would be even cooler as a G2 pattern upper though
I own a brn180sh and it doesn’t have the dust cover like other brn180. The port opened for charging handles allows a pinky sized item to go in. I’d love to see how this affects the overall reliability of it under different conditions.
I love the folding stock ar's. Bought the early release Sig MCX. Just recently picked up a Foxtrot Mike 12.5 pistol complete for $600. Added a folding brace, very lightweight and accurate little gun. Has run 100%.
I already have the jakl and a few ar's in different calibers. I love my jakl. The forend gets hot so I use a foregip. It's definitely front heavy. The model I have I believe is newer than the 1 you have in the video.
Always great videos MAC, thanks. I am interested in a long-stroke piston system, and most likely will get a PWS MK116 Comp rifle, but also want a JAKL, primarily because it’s different looking and unique at that price point. I am curious if anyone owns the PWS and JAKL and purely from operations of the two your thoughts, given both being long-stroke.
FM-15 not in the mix? It'd also be cool to get your take on the AR-ish bullpup adapters out there that mate to the bufferless uppers like the JAKL and BRN-180.
KNS also makes a picatinny buffer tube thread end-caps for AR15 lowers. Just make sure you buy the version with wings to cover the rear take-down detent spring…
If you are running a 300 Blackout SBR and shooting supers, does turning off the gas system still significantly reduce the noise signature? I understand the concept, and I’m sure it makes a difference with subsonic rounds. However, subsonic 300 BLK is a novelty item to me in terms of ballistics.
I know 2 people who have purchased BRN 180's from Brownells, and they just can't keep them running. I don't know if they've worked with Brownells customer service to resolve the issues or not.
Shoe Horning the gas piston into a di ar15 setup is what a lot of Canadian 180 alternatives tried to do. Resulted in a bunch of bent and broken gas pistons.
I'd pick the Jakl because it doesn't have that cutout in the upper receiver for the reciprocating charging handle. That cutout just makes it easier for debris to get into the internals and cause a malfunction
The 'dog leg' charge handle is a problem for some rail-mounted devices on BRN180's creating pinch-points. A3 Tactical makes several versions of the charge handle that offer ergonomic and anesthetic improvements.
JMO: I bought and returned one of the first BRN 180 uppers. Cost was over $800.00. The accuracy was 2.5" at best, 100 yards. Fit and finish was not $800.00. The cost is extensive, and I think both Brownell and PSA are way out of line on price. It's just an upper and like you said, simple design.
Tim: 8:45 "Any AR upper will pin to the BRN180 lower" Maybe it will pin to it, but the AR upper as a traditional DI gun is incompatible! The solid rear cast lower with 'Pic rail' stock attachment will not accommodate the BCG and buffer system of an AR. You can however put a BRN180 upper on a milspec AR lower. Perhaps that's what you were thinking
Question for the group. Stoner used the gas tune as a "safety" to fail before the rifle would burn up the main components of the rifle, what is the "fail safe" of a short or long piston rifle??? Is there a "fail safe" & is it better than the gas tube design?? I've thought and thought about this question and can't find the answer.....
I prefer the Jakl over the BRN. Just preference. PSA has been very innovative lately, they just need to really ring in their quality control. I have two of their AR15s and i must say they run perfectly fine. But next to my DDM4 and my two Giesseles, when you put them together you can see and feel the difference in quality. But they do run very well
With the jakl, you also have to change your bolt catch. It was a toss up between the Jakl and brn but I went with the Jakl because they had a 14.5 pin and weld option.
I like psa, and will def be getting something from them before too long. But have been looking for a 300blk platform to build out as a suppressor host, and that upper with the closeable gas block to do single shots sounds perfect. I will definitely have to look for that..
As a potential PSA JAKL buyer, thank you for your input. Learning the rolling changes are coming out for the rifle makes me want to wait for a "Mark 2" version once they work through all the feedback.
I have two BRN-180s. one 18.5 inch and one 16 inch. both with the BRN-180 lower that mimics the OG AR18 lower. I would buy a couple more since they've come out with new caliber uppers, but they stopped selling the lowers. kind of makes the whole point moot. spare parts are even scarce on Brownells website. Hopefully PWS will have parts or maybe Nodak Spud continues the lower.
I own a 10.5 Jakl pistol that I bought a little over a year ago. I’ve only put about 300 rounds through it but it’s not very reliable. I’m hoping that might change as I shoot it more, but as of now it doesn’t cycle 223 ammo in any of the gas positions, only 556. It’s also gotten beat up where the charging handle hits the end of the slot in the upper. Maybe I should have gotten a BRN-180.
Besides it being slightly heavy once I fitted mine out, my Jakl is my favorite toy. Im going to slim it down soon. I got the 16” variant in FDE, PSA had a good deal on them a couple months ago for $1100.
Would def go with the JAKL. Very easy to mount to a ar lower. I see the new ones have different charging handle and gas nob. Always improving is a plus to me.
It does but…if you like to have a long pull (extend the stock out) and rest your cheek near the back of the stock you will fall into that gap where there is no cheek well. When I shoot it I have to change up my shooting mechanics so my cheek can rest on the stock. It looks great but for me I don’t like it.
I just picked up an AR180B, so I got the rifle I wanted. My thoughts on the Jakyl are similar to yours on some Sig offerings. If they're making constant changes for the better, and assuming you can get those changes fine. If like Sig they're going to make changes, but not change the nomenclature, when you need parts, how the hell do you know if you're getting the right one?
TL;DR: the BRN180 is a more refined product. The AR18 gas system has been used in a number of other guns and is well understood. The JAKL is still a “work in progress”-which is fine, just understand that it’s a newer, not as well tested design, and PSA is still getting feedback from the field and incorporating that feedback into the design as the product evolves.
I'd go for the BRN-180 in 10.5", coz it's available in the country where I live, and buying only the Upper won't block space on my semi-auto permit (Europe, it's complicated I know, but thanks for the condolences)
I like the Jakl for its non-reciprocating charging handles, and the system seems like it is more sealed up then the BRN-180, I have a Sig MCX Lt so I already own a "ar180 like" system. ....but I actually really like My POF-USA P415 EDGE, and my LWRC SIX8 IC-A5. The lwrc and POF piston systems are really nice.
I would like to see the jakl in a 300 blk rifle. As far as I can tell right now 300 blk are all super short. So far though I think I will stick to AR for now.
Wolf A1 (T91) Upper is my pick for an AR180 style system. Lighter than both, combat proven, choice of barrel length (12, 14, 16"), and less expensive at $600. They're at AIM Surplus.
Great video! JAKL definitely needs a break in. I’m not sure exactly why but it could be reduced internal upper dimensions due to the cerakote. The gas system also needs more gas (perhaps a larger gas port). Mine runs fine on max gas but only on max gas. There is a lot of mass reciprocating with each shot so the shooting experience is very different than an AR. It’s a nice rifle and a great AR/AK hybrid if that’s what you’re looking for. The BRN-180 has been out for a while and generally is higher quality (less QC issues) in my opinion. We have one with around 8k rounds on it and it’s a very soft shooting rifle. Having both I would buy a 180. However, if you open up the options I would consider the Bren 2 over both and if you can afford it, the Spear LT is pretty nice. (And yeah, the PWS systems are an option too)
A3 Tactical is in the process of trickling out a bullpup chassis for both these uppers (and FM) and I’ve got a pistol version on order for my .300BLK JAKL. If PSA would do a 13.7” P&W upper in .300 I’d pick a rifle version up for that as well but waiting to see how the Triad runs as a pistol chassis first and likely will try the rifle version for my BRN-180 uppers as well. It’ll be short, even with a can, that’s for sure! JAKL Triad takes a new front hand guard which adds to complexity so I figured simpler versions would be easier if I could figure out the pistol bullpup.

I would choose the puppy with the hearing protection. 🙂
Jakl, I support innovation, and PSA is faithful the civilian market.
Yea I always buy from PSA simply because of their loyalty to us.
I have had the Foxtrot Mike FM15 and since they updated the plastic butt plate the stock attaches to It's been spot on!!! They even supply the heavier spring to install when you shoot it suppressed. I'll wait for the later version of the JAKL. I'll have to look into that BRN300aac though!!!!!! thanks for the heads up on that.
I have a couple of BRN-180'S with the BRN-180 'Modern' lowers. These were bought before the Jakl was released. Tried to get an FDE version, but they weren't available at the time. The Jakl is interesting and may wind up in the collection at some point.
I have a JAKL and love it. I will definitely get the 308 when it comes out.
I just picked up a BRN-180 upper, and I wasn't certain I want to keep it. Now I feel much better about it.
Of course PSA won't ship to my state, so that's not an option. Yet.
Thank you!
Another upper that would be interesting to through in the mix, would be the Foxtrot Mike FM15 gen 2.
I sold my SCAR back to the gun shop & brought a psa jakl. 2 daggers 100 round drum & 250 rounds.
Well? Do you like it? is it reliable?
and how do the daggers fair when shooting akimbo?
@@Matthew-bc9mr what's akimbo
Ha because flannel daddy said to?
@@Gunker02 who told you what ?
Glad some of the issues with the Jakl were already addressed. However, PSA does need to use a different (lighter) profile barrel. Shaving off 8 oz would be great.
I plan of purchasing a Jakl, just waiting to see if PSA is going to address the weight issue. Something tells me, it will be a while...due to they're going to concentrate their efforts toward the .308 model.
Considering you were a fan of primary weapon systems, and also a fan of Robinson armament. I would very much like to see you compare the Robinson XCR with the new PWS UXR…. They seem very similar in concept. And very similar and design. Both of which feature quick change barrel and caliber system, and appear to come completely ambidextrous.
PSA will release a bullpup lower for the Jackal. Which you will like for sure, hopefully it will address the front weight the barrel and gas block quite a bit.
I own both guns. Had the Jakl for a while now and love it. Haven't got to shoot my Brn180 yet, just got the upper today and the lower is off being engraved. Thanks for this video.
Can't stop thinking about puppy hearing protection on different breeds of doggo
These are offered by Rex Specs.
Your dog with the earmuffs on is adorable
Jakl is pretty sweet . I want to get one
I have an original AR 180 from Armalite Costa Mass and have put through thousands of rounds down range.. just a great AR platform. Love it.
I’d probably go with the JAKL. Just seems a bit simpler of a design. One piece piston vs multi part. Handguard doesn’t need to be removed for cleaning. A lighter barrel would be cool like you said.
JAKL is made for going short and quiet. A light barrel does not make sense, or a barrel in the length reviewed.
@@KalashniKEV762 I don’t have any issues with a short suppressed gun having a pencil barrel. For my use, the trade offs are worth it.
Pick up a BRN 180 running it now For 2 years, I have no problem with it.Our may i say the only problem was.The stock came loose and I tighten it up with an allen Wrench been running it 2 years now. No problem Flawless no complaint.
Got the 5.56 and .300bo jakl uppers, love them so far. Probably will get the 7.62x39 brn180 upper since I prefer the AR style mags system over the rock n lock ak crap. Both are great, jakl is a little heavier but super smooth cycling and recoil impulse. The brn180 is lighter but choppier. I'm still playing around with muzzle devices too.
Another awesome new video. While others flounder and can’t come up with new content… Tim delivers the good stuff.
BRN-4 over here. Or the URGI upper brownells had a $300 discount on.
I love my BRN-180. I’ve been teased by a reliable source that Gen 3 is on the way, some of the improvements were already incorporated into the .350 Legend version.
The term "at home" is for the short bus and considering the original AR180, ACR and Current Scars were/are made in the USA it's extra short bus.
Gen3 BRN is coming. And Baron, has hinted at a the potential for a BRN160 (Stoner designed an ar16 in .308)
Interesting.
@@DB-yj3qc indeed. Potentially more interesting than the .308 JAKL. The 5.56 JAKL is heavy. And the .308 looks like a storm boltor. So, hopefully a brn160 could be a lighter option. Would be even cooler as a G2 pattern upper though
Gen3? Linky?
The ACR we didn't ask for but we needed.
What type of problems are they experiencing? Thanks
I built one on a adm uic180 lower and its amazing no issues I'm even thinking about sbring it. I run it with an original mcx stock
Shoe Horning the gas piston into a di ar15 setup is what a lot of Canadian 180 alternatives tried to do. Resulted in a bunch of bent and broken gas pistons.
@9:21 huh! They UNDER gassed them? How strange since moat ARs seem to be overgassed.
Guess they were trying to offset that longstroke recoil?
Nice review thanks
There is a BRN-180 in 350 Legend, which might interest some hunters
I prefer the Jakl over the BRN. Just preference. PSA has been very innovative lately, they just need to really ring in their quality control. I have two of their AR15s and i must say they run perfectly fine. But next to my DDM4 and my two Giesseles, when you put them together you can see and feel the difference in quality. But they do run very well
With the jakl, you also have to change your bolt catch. It was a toss up between the Jakl and brn but I went with the Jakl because they had a 14.5 pin and weld option.
I think a better comparison would be a Robinson Arms XCR versus the PSA jakl.
I own both. The XCR is way better. Having said that, the JAKL is 1000 dollars less. Personally, I love both of them!
Built my BRN 180 just to be different & have the old style look, but runs like a champ.
Can you recommend a specific hearing protection for dogs? I'm very interested in getting some for my Great Dane.
ive had both Ar-180B and a 1st Gen BRN-180 pistol and am going forward with BRN 300 blackout pistol
Awesome, I hope you do a similar video with the scar and 308 jakl when it’s released.
SCAR at 5 times the cost. I will always choose the JAKL.
Can you put a quiet can on the javkyl 14.5 inch or 13.5 inch pinned and welded. Whats involved getting a can to work with it
Besides it being slightly heavy once I fitted mine out, my Jakl is my favorite toy.
Dumb question...on the BRN 180..if your AR lower has a buffer tube, can you leave it in, or does it need to be taken out?
Either
I'm really liking the cmmg dessent. I would like to see further testing between the descent, brn 180, and the jackel.
It seems like you can just use a standard AR lower if you just have an upper, until you can get the adapter end plate thingy?
The jakl stock looks awesome
It does but…if you like to have a long pull (extend the stock out) and rest your cheek near the back of the stock you will fall into that gap where there is no cheek well. When I shoot it I have to change up my shooting mechanics so my cheek can rest on the stock. It looks great but for me I don’t like it.
You mean truck gun wise? Where did you get the 300 B/O charging handle for the 180?
I wish you would've added a rock River PDS In the category... It's also very similar.
They are the price of the jakl and ar18 combined
Love my BRN180, great carbine.
Can one put the PSA Jakl upper on that BRN 180 lower.
I own that BRN Lower and I am wondering what other uppers I can put on it.
I have been very interested in one of these options to use with a bullpup kit.
I love your dog hearing protection!
Based MAC!!!
Can the barrel be replaced by a aftermarket barrel manufacture on either one. I could look that up but I thought I would just ask here.
Are the bolts and barrels the same as AR's? Was wondering how hard a caliber swap would be.
They just did a video on the 308 jakl yesterday
TL;DR: the BRN180 is a more refined product. The AR18 gas system has been used in a number of other guns and is well understood.
The JAKL is still a “work in progress”-which is fine, just understand that it’s a newer, not as well tested design, and PSA is still getting feedback from the field and incorporating that feedback into the design as the product evolves.
Cool, I've been looking at both. Want something w a bigger round than my scorpion
I was hoping you'd cover weight/ balance, accuracy and reliability
I'd def go with the Jakl. I've got my eyes on one currently and the support it has over the 180 is very soon, if not already, to overshadow it
