    Great video. thanks for posting. My Genie G2500, installed in approx. 2000, had the same symptoms, but doesn't have a coupling. But I found by tightening the clutch nut, on the motor shaft by the clutch spring, it solved the problem. Try that before taking down the opener.

    I'm now hearing the "clicking" sound as the door is near fully open so I suspect this coupler is on it's way out. Best to change it before it fails. Great tutorial.

    I have the Genie red box installed around 2001. When replacing it, I tried to follow the video to discover that there is no "coupling", and that the motor has hollow shaft where the screw goes in as a single piece. To remove it, one has to remove the enclosure, unscrew the rear nut, remove the lock nut (and also the key in the keyed shaft) and only then the entire first section of the screw comes out... This is probably the earlier version of door opener - more reliable but noisy and difficult to disassemble.

      Correct, being 20 years old it may be a better idea to replace the whole unit and it sounds like you’re handy enough to do so? Depending where you’re at you can get a brand new unit for relatively cheap for example: amzn.to/3oXGxmw

    could this be the culprit if my garage door only opens up to sensor height?
    problem started when the garage door would not close because the pulley cables came off on both sides and that extra weight on one side and caused the rail to bend. I straightened the rails and put the cables on the wheels but now my door will only open up to sensor height

    Looks like there is four or five washers behind that coupling. Any chance you could do another video showing removing the silver bearing looking thing right behind the coupler and then show what order those washers/bearings go. I feel like I may have retaining clip that got destroyed because when I put everything back together the door raised but the whole long screw/worm gear got pushed out toward the front of the garage toward the driveway

      If you changed the capacitor with the same one and it’s still doing the same thing, it’s most likely the motor itself. You could try logic board but honestly that sounds older than it’s worth?

    Hello, I had this problem with my genie unit, lasted for years before this happened. But now after replacing it the first time, the coupler's oval shape in the motor side of the unit stripped again after 6 months and just not too long ago it happened again after about a month of replacing the part. I've replaced the part a total of three times, last one only lasted a month. I thought it was a problem with lubrication, so I bought a lubricant made for garage door components and that did help in that the unit now operates smoothly and has never been quieter but it still strips the coupler, any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    • @GarageDoorGuidance
      @GarageDoorGuidance  6 років тому

      xsanmiguelx sounds to me like the door may be heavier than usual an that would cause your opener to work harder. If that’s the case then I can see this happening to you.
      Only other thing I can think of is either a bad part or something with the RPM sensor maybe

    • @xsanmiguelx
      @xsanmiguelx 6 років тому +1

      Thanks! Is there any test that can be done to determine if the weight of the door is in fact the problem? I have tried to manually operate the door and it feels ok to me, but I'm not an expert in garage doors nor have I compared it to other doors to know that's the case.

    • @GarageDoorGuidance
      @GarageDoorGuidance  6 років тому

      xsanmiguelx when you have the door in manual mode, bring it up half way. ( bout 3.5 feet off the ground ) when you let go, it should stay there. If it comes crashing down - too heavy. If it comes flying up then the springs are wound too much

    This shows a motor that is not actually in place but on a table or on the floor. It does not tells you how to do it when the motor and screw shaft are actually on the ceiling . Do you really can move the screw backwards while it is in its regular location? that would have been a much better video.

    • @TheNYgolfer
      @TheNYgolfer 5 років тому +3

      If you can't figure out how to do it with the unit in place you probably don't have the mechanical aptitude to tackle this project.

    • @jimlocke3
      @jimlocke3 5 років тому +2

      I agree with Carlos here. The screw for at least my setup, does not move unless disconnected from the other rail segment. The video is good quality, however, how many people are going to remove the motor and the first segment of the rail/screw to do this? This would leave the rest of the rail/screw without support, unless one could find a good way to support it. Tips on handling this (maybe more common scenario) would be very helpful.

  • @mingeaficianado

    • @GarageDoorGuidance
      @GarageDoorGuidance  2 роки тому +1

      Yes but you’ll need to create some space to be able to shove it backward or the rail forward in order to have enough room to get the coupler out. Whether you loosen the front of the rail or motor itself
