    This may be number 6. My screw drive (residential) was 15 years old when it stopped putting the door down all the way. The flashing green light in the unit told me that the motor board may be bad. A new motor board was half the price of a complete unit so I decided to replace the whole unit. When I was taking the screw drive mechanism apart, I found a small piece of metal on the screw that was big enough to interfere with the travel of the carriage. The metal was once a c-clip that locked a collette into place when the three pieces of screw were assembled at installation. Moral of the story? If your screw drive door opener is a residential unit and is old and stops during opening or closing your door, you may have the same problem.

    Just repaired my old (15-20 yrs) Genie screw-drive homeowner model. The culprit was that the pickup for the rpm sensor on the back of the motor had rotated up slightly (1/8" or so). Using a finger to rotate it back down (to exactly horizontal) fixed the problem, which was erratic opening/closing distance even if the wall button was held down. Zero cost and door opens and closes perfectly without holding the button now.

    My Genie screw drive opener has acted up this winter with the cold weather. My warranty has run out, now I am on my own dime now. So unfortunately now I will have to replace my opener, AFTER 40 YEARS!!!!! My Genie screw drive has been flawless for all those years and needless to say I'm going to replace it with another one. This new one will outlive my. Thanks Genie for a great product.

    I very much appreciate this overview. My problem is that the entire assembly has slowly operated more and more loudly. And then it's started stalling about halfway open about half of the time. A mere capacitor problem might cause a lack of strength, but I don't see how a bad cap could be the cause of the noise. EDIT: I lubed it and now it is much quieter and works better, but the screw assembly does not seem as sturdy as I'd like. Maybe I just never noticed it before. In any case, thank you for posting this.

    Just thought I would mention something about the expensive sequencer board.Mine has had problems with the relay contacts.You can take the plastic cover off the relays and try to sand and clean the contacts or buy a relay and replace.I think that the relays are the primary problem with this board and a lot cheaper,about $10 each, than replacing the complete board.

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato

      If the spring on the door is broken the motor cannot pull it up. Try the door manually to see if it is too heavy. If the carriage is bad you can usually hear it grinding. Using the door with a broken spring can damage the carriage. Also check the force adjustment.

    Hi,
    I have a 1/2HP Genie Intellicode model IS900, and now the opener doesn't work. When I press the remote button to open, the motor spins for about 1.5 second and then stops. When I press again, it spins the opposite direction for another 1.5 second and stops. I have replaced the screw coupler although it is still good. Are there other parts that I should inspect and replace?
    Any comment is appreciated. Thanks

      Hi. I applied screw drive lube by genie and when i close the door initially it reverses when trying to close it. It goes down a bit then goes reverse to open again. Did i apply too much genie screw drive rail lube?

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato

      sundance kidd Check the force adjustment. There is one for up and one for down. The grease might be thick and causing the motor to work harder to spin. Next check the infra red safety cameras. Also check that the limit switches are hanging freely and not contacting. If you put too much grease, the excess will just drip out. Also check to see if you have the correct grease. If you run the motor too much it will shut off for about 20 min. till it cools. Good Luck...

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato
      @GSOverheadSystemsNovato  9 років тому

      You should try to pin point where the sound is coming from. Is it near the motor head. There is a coupler that joins the rail to the motor that may wear down. Inspect the screw rail as it is spinning. There are plastic guides around it that may have broken and obstructing the screw while it is spinning. Check the carriage and trolley mechanism to ensure they are moving freely & not worn out. Some parts may need to be greased occasionally. Use only specified grease by the manufacturer. Worn parts need to be replaced. Also, note that if you run the motor and overheat it, she will shut own for about 20 min.

      Check the force adjustment, also you can try to grease the screw rail, but you must use the correct grease. We use low temperature grease called Lubriplate. Also try the door manually to see if the door moves freely. It is hard to say without seeing it. If you have not greased it in a long time that could be it. Run the tube of grease on the screw all the way down rail, like toothpaste. Then run the motor to work it all in the screw, have a paper towel, be ready to catch the excess grease will drip down the back of the carriage. Kind of messy. Hope that works.

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato
      @GSOverheadSystemsNovato  8 років тому

      +Jack Reese Depending on which model you have, the lights normally stay on for about 3-5 min. and go off. Some wall buttons have a light switch on them. See if the switch is in the on position. Some really older models have a switch on the motor head by the light bulb. Also could be something wrong in the circuit board.

    Hi there I have a genie pro screwdrive. It recently stopped opening or closing the garage door. The problem was the coupler and I replaced it but now that I run it it moves one direction then moves back another. I checked the door sensors and they work fine. I even run the opener without the door attached so there is no resistance but it still continues to have this problem. I have heard the maybe it could be the clutch sensor or maybe the capacitor? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato
      @GSOverheadSystemsNovato  9 років тому

      Eli70mod The first thing I would check is the wires to the limit switch and the limit switches. When you removed the wires to replace the coupler, they may have been damaged or slightly stripped and making contact against the rail. Also be sure the switch is hanging freely and not binding against the rail. Check the two bolts holding the motor to the rail. Maybe too tight. Loosen a little bit. Also I have seen the screw rail itself freeze up due to old dried up grease and have trouble spinning. Maybe a little fresh grease (use correct grease). Check the force adjustment. After that, then possibly internal motor part. Good Luck.

    My Genie Pro will only raise approximately 22" and stops.
    This only happens when I depress the button, (wall mount or remote), with "normal" pressure or effort.
    I have to press and hold for 3-5 seconds for full opening. It does not happen when I close the door.
    The typical tap of the button instantly closes the door.
    Any ideas?

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato
      @GSOverheadSystemsNovato  8 років тому

      +Tom Gates II Try the door manually and see if it goes up and down easily by hand. Check for any broken or damaged parts. If the door is good then you can try to increase the force adjustment. Also there is a special grease that goes on the screw rail to help it spin easily. Sometimes the old grease gets thick and makes the motor work harder.

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato
      @GSOverheadSystemsNovato  8 років тому

      +tomr Many times the wall button is really old and the contact is collapsed. Also the remote button can collapse or sometimes get stuck in the down position. Sometimes, there may be a staple in the wiring for the wall button and if there is movement it will cause the contact. Some of the older external receivers were not very secure and can be opened by radio frequencies in the air. You can buy updated security receivers and new remotes. Wired key switches are prime targets, because moisture will cause contact. Diagnosing this problem is by trial and error. For example, removing the receiver for a time and see if problem stops. Replace the wire for the wall button. Change the code on the receiver. Overall, if the unit is over 15 years old. It is best to replace.

    what does it take to tighten the door spring. Is there a video and what is the tool used?

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato
      @GSOverheadSystemsNovato  9 років тому +2

      konagalHI1 We do not have a video for that adjustment at this time. If you are referring to a torsion spring adjustment. Then you will need, a pair of wind up bars, a socket for the set screws and a vise grip if there is only one spring. If you have two springs you do not need the vise grip, if you adjust the springs one at a time. You must be very careful, springs are loaded and can cause injury. Never loosen the set screws until the wind up bar is inserted into the spring and holding it in place. Do not attempt this until you find a video and can actual see how it is done. If you can't find an adjustment video. Try spring replacement video. Will give you an idea of how it works. One piece door springs are completely different. I must stress again to be careful. Many people injured by springs.

    Hello. Thanks for posting. I have a genie intellicode medallion series screwdriver garage door opener. I haven't had a problem with this unit ever. A few months ago I did some maintenance on the screwdriver opener and lubed it up because I though hey I'm lubing the track that the wheels roll in why not lube the screwdriver opener. So needless to say ever since I've done is I press the button to open for and nothing happens the motor runs fine but the screwdriven opener just spins and it makes clicking noises resembling the sound of well clicking the door doesn't open but when I help it open by lifting the handle so I take he pressure off the screwdriven opener and help it it works just fine until it's all the way open and I'm good. Even when I close it it closes it just fine. Did I ruin the opener by adding the wrong lube? Do I need to tighten up a few things here and there? Does my description completely confuse you? Hahaha hope you can help. Let me know when you have time please. Thank you.

      mn nn If the screw is spinning then I would guess that the carriage assembly gears are stripped. Not very difficult to replace. If you notice the screw is sometimes spinning and not spinning while the motor is running then it could be the coupler. You have to disassemble the motor and rail to replace. I believe the model you have is the piece together rail and those are notorious for stripping the carriage. Also, there is a special low temp grease required for the screw drive. Apply grease if you replace the carriage. Hope that helps. Good luck.

      Rino Cefaloni It takes more torque to open the door. Closing is easier on the motor. You can try to help the motor by pushing the door up at the same time you push the button, be careful not to put your fingers between the panels. Also there is a coupler that joins the motor to the rail that wears out and makes a noise. more often it is the carriage, especially on the 3 piece rail models.

    I'm having issues with a Genie re-branded as an overhear garage door. It isn't opening or closing. When i click the open/close button, the door makes a grunt noise for about a second then shuts off the light for about a second then grunts again for a second. I also noticed some oily goop sprayed on the cover across from the starting capacitor and the relief hole on the starting capacitor is broken. Betting the capacitor is blown. Any thoughts?

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato
      @GSOverheadSystemsNovato  9 років тому

      Sometimes the capacitor explodes and sprays stuff inside the cover. If you can visually see that it is damaged, then that is a good place to start. I believe Overhead Doors and Genie are now the same company and use many of the same parts. You will need to go to a garage door store to purchase the capacitor. Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

      So i replaced the capicator and everything went fine for 2 weeks. The replacement capicator blew up this morning. The replacement was a 64-77uf starting capacitor. What would cause the new capacitor to blow?

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato
      @GSOverheadSystemsNovato  9 років тому

      Is the new capacitor the same specs as the old one. Maybe an exposed wire, or a short somewhere in the system. Over heating the unit or if the unit is struggling to open the door. Sometimes a bad part.

    • @jayscott1063

      G S Overhead Systems The replacement capacitor was actually a Dalton 64-67 uf cap not a Malory 70uf like the . Even after the capacitor blew the garage door worked for a few months. Now the garage door just clicks twice when trying to open. It makes the same noise if the garage door is connected or not. The garage door is an 8 foot model and since i have the 8 foot solid screw, can i just replace the motor and not mess with the screw? If so, will i need a new coupler?

      Not with the new model openers. They changed the design. If you can find the older version then yes the rail would work. If you are changing the whole thing consider, LiftMaster, Chamberlain. More reliable. We have had many problems with the new Genie products. One model was called back for fire hazard. Many defective parts. The older Genie motors were much better.

    Hi, I changed the coupler that was stripped but I now am experiencing the screw turning when the door is not engaged but when the carriage is engaged the screw appears to have probably 1/2 inch of play and this causes the screw to move and ultimately strip the coupler again. I have a number of washers between the coupler and the screw but didn't note the order when removing to fit the coupler. Any ideas about what could be going on any why the screw is able to move horizontally.

      Adrian Bowles There are no washers between the coupler the screw rail and the motor head. The washers are between the screw rail and the cylinder holding it. Did you pull the whole screw out of the cylinder? No need to do that. Look at the video around 2:35, where it shows the end of the rail where the coupler fits. Ounce you place the coupler on the rail end then you must match the oval part to the fitting on the motor head then make sure you have 2 bolts and nuts holding it together. Do not tighten too much. Sounds like maybe you only used 1 bolt to hold the rail down. When you have the coupler in correctly there won't be any room for any washers.

      I see the 4 washers , I;m assuming none of them are split washers or anything like that - is this what stops the screw from moving.

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato
      @GSOverheadSystemsNovato  9 років тому

      No, I guess it is just a spacer to help the screw spin.

      The coupler stays engaged when door is not connected but once connected the screw slides back and then slips back the door stops moving and the coupler strips. I cannot figure what will stop this happening.

      If it is a screw drive model. It might be the coupler that joins the motor to the rail. If it an older model with no coupler, than it could be the clutch mechanism.

      +Tjay Nikkel Make sure the infra red safety beam is aligned properly. Try the door manually to see if the door goes up and down easily. Also could be a worn out carriage or damaged coupler.

    Since in the video it is spelled coupler then think of it as a couple of things. So it's pronounced couple with an "R" Coupler

    How do I check the capacitor to see if it bad?

    • @GSOverheadSystemsNovato
      @GSOverheadSystemsNovato  9 років тому

      Make sure to unplug the unit before you take the cover off. There are 4 wires connected to the capacitor. Many times you can visually see the capacitor is coming apart or a burnt mark may appear where the wires are connected, or something coming out of that area. That's the easy way. Otherwise, you will need an electric tester, ohm meter, volt meter or something to test. Also need the specs which I do not have right now. I carry spare capacitors and usually test it that way. I believe you said your motor was buzzing and not spinning the screw. I found three problems that cause this. Capacitor, sequencer board, which is expensive and sometimes I seen the screw in the rail freeze due to old grease or foreign object or something and not want to turn. The sequencer board has three boxes on it with contact switches inside that get stuck. Sandpaper might fix that problem. Hard to say without actually seeing it in person for sure. That's all I can think of right now. Good Luck...
