They know music theory without knowing they know music theory
Realest comment I've literally ever read. "No Mark, I know nothing about music theory." Lmao
i recommend u not to skip this one, but just in case u just wanna watch Mrak's gnarly string bend.
19:28 Reptile
45:21 Omega
1:01:52 The Way The News Goes...
1:14:45 Scarlet
Man. There's a lot of lives you car hear it. Just enjoy the information here if you need, of course.
Mrak
Haven't listened that much to periphery, don't really know much about them at all. This video was recomended to me by youtube so I clicked it. One hour and 19 minutes flew by, this guy seems like a really cool dude and I'm gonna check out more of their music now.
I think that's a great idea. You won't regret having such an open mind. They are all amazing people. They have really creative writing and music so enjoy your journey
@@JessyWessy_ Yeah, they all seem like great people doing what the do for all the right reasons.
Loved the music, not a super fan of the vocals but that's not their fault :D
Joe Shit the Rag Man at least you’re respectable about it. Have a great day man
Ewolf5150 definitely
Same here.. Gonna check em out after this!!
I love Holcomb's aproach to writing, especially chords how he won't bother with the bass note and adds such interesting voicings to his chords
John Browne is pretty tight in that respect. Especially with crazy tunings and chords.
thats cuz Jake and Misha have the low end completely locked down
I remember them talking (on some interview) about playing a show with all their longest songs; imagine them playing reptile, omega and racecar all in a single show, I'd pay good money to watch that!
...and the show would only be 3 songs lol, but same, that would still be too good to be true.
I was hoping that's what this clinic was going to be, the 3 longest songs they have lol
@@josuastangl7140 Hahaha well hopefully not just a 3 song show (though that could well be half a set already). Imagine those 3 songs for an encore... epic.
Haken has so many long songs. If they can fit Visions (22 min song)as an encore song periphery can do it.
Finish the show with Satellites, too.
Coming from someone who grew up as a tap dancer: Rhythms sing a song, even if they don't have different notes.
Rhythms ARE their own song.
Thinking about it like that has helped me get some of the weirder chuggy rhythms in metal music.
Was thinking of learning some Omega...then I saw 47:38...you guys just making up chords now
Lmao that fucking chord 😂😭
He makes it look weird. I tried it and it's easy, or atleast for me. The E chord is the worst of them.
They are actually not that hard. I find marigold arpeggios more stretchy when you are getting to the 12th fret
@@oscar.leon003 fr the Marigold arpeggios are a nightmare. Especially the ones from higher like you mentioned. My hand still starts to cramp after I play the riff
Oscar León My broken and outstretched fingers want to like this more than once, please help
He protec
He attac
But most importantly...
*HE MRAK*
mracc
So mrak
lolol wtf
Reptile at the next headliner, hell yeah!
*Mark is so humble, writes such amazing riffs and it's such a nice person, it was a delight to watch him play and listen to his insight about songwriting
Reptile is such a Masterpiece, remembered me to Prayer Position esence.
those two riffs at the beginning are thiiicccc
it's extremely badass of him to leave his gear setup for others to try out. I got to play his PRS 7 string at a clinic in KC a few years ago and it blew me the fuck away. Absolutely the classiest dude
I hope he comes back to KC soon. Id come for sure
I still hear jazz chords that’s awesome thank you thank you
Do you like jazz?
I saw you guys in Columbus and I nearly cried because I've always wanted to see you and it was even better than I already thought it was going to be you guys are amazing I swear
Awesome video! Mark is the soft-spoken, refined djentlemen of this genre and a tremendous inspiration as a guitar player.
Thank you Mark, Pitbull Audio, PRS for making this possible.
Was a blast and learned so much!
Can't wait for the next one.
Gene Wong ooo, i didn’t know you were a Periphery fan too! your Diru covers are awesome btw.
When was this??
I am now! Mark is inspirational and so kind for doing this for us.
Gene Wong hey man, thanks for letting me get in front of you to record when Mark played The Way The News Goes and thanks for just being a super cool dude at the clinic!
Anytime brother! I always feel bad if people don't have a clear view in front of me. Hope you got some good footage :)
There's something a lot of these genius guitar players have in common and that is the simplicity behind writing complex riffs. If that makes any sense. it's like building a house: you start from something simple(a base foundation) and build upwards from there.
I'm enamored by how Mark does he chugs for some reason. Controlled, calculated, methodical even, but still very aggressive and crunchy
Thanks for the put up of this video. Great video!
this was awesome, thanks guys :)
Mark is such a humble down to earth dude, what a great guy and amazing guitar player. Been loving Periphery since the beginning and they just keep pushing out more every album.
Man, I love Mark, he's such a great dude.
down to earth, amazing character and a total fkn beast on guitar! You guys only deserve the best
The way the news goes... love that song
Thank you! Mark is such an incredible and inspiring player and person....
Amazing guitarrist and songwriter, thanks Mark!
Mark is truly an absolute genius for the riffs he gave us on Reptile, they definitely have his chord-based approach to them like he's always done but he's taken them a step further here. I find it so refined and it's a beautiful progression on his style.
One day I will be there listening to this master!
Watching this guy, so cool and laid back. Glad I bought one of his signature models, great guitars and I hope he gains some satisfaction from knowing people are buying them and loving them.
Not always buying, his personal guitar that he cherished and had for a long time was stolen a while back while they were on tour.
Mark acts as though it hasn't affected him but it was a signature of his, the first of his, and his favorite.
@@bilbotbaggins8886 that's unfortunate to hear
This was really cool. Appreciate the upload
Saw Mark in a clinic in Wales, one of the greatest dudes I've ever met. And I just booked my tickets for Bristol in November!
Mr holcomb
Thank you for being so informative
30:45 is wonderfully said. Inspiration leading to trust as a band is such an important factor in real growth and success.
I love his chord voicings. Amazing player.
Jezzz great playing ....and fingers to boot!
Great job Mark
Mark! I love all the thumb strums on this album. Your playing style is ever evolving, but still very Mark Holcomb. The drop GG is similar to Architects drop GG. Love it
Love it!
I cant wait to see reptile live dudes
How do you even write a riff like Reptile!? It's all over the neck, and happens so fast IDEK how you come up with that, it's a beast of a riff
Reptile is amazing, but they have a ton of way more intricate riffs in their other songs. Reptile isn’t in their top 10 IMO
@@juliobonilla3104 No worries boomer! Thanks for your expert opinion.
This man is truly a genius. Reptile is such a good song
Man his style is soo damm badass !
Hi Mark, I just purchased your signature SE with bone nut and plekd from Sweetwater. The instrument came to me perfectly tuned to drop C. I wanted a new challenge with an unbeatable instrument and I found it in what you and PRS have created !!!!
Wish me the best, as I do you Mark!
PEACE BROTHER
MARK C STEELE
I bought his sig off you guys last year - saw it on Reverb I think - and it's my favorite guitar I've owned to date. He's one of my biggest inspirations, so it was really sick for you guys to host him for a clinic
It is so fucking stupid how good this video is. Such amazing insight and technical talk watered down so that even my 11 year-old understood him and enjoyed (my little one was raised a metalhead so this was captivating for the little guy). I'm teaching basics and we were talking about sound style. He asked me about reptile and the song led us down the rabbit hole to this video. So glad we caught it.
Mark...is super cool...Met him in 2015....
This guy is my hero.
Ahhhhhh that's why the beginning of sentient glow had that 2010 feel to it. When I first heard it I thought it was a great unique take to that style, idk what it's called. It was kinda overused back then but slowly died, so it's definitely the perfect timing to do sentient glow.
When I heard sentient glow all i thought about was killswitch engaged
Crystal Lake - Aeon!!! You"ll love it!
Came for the guitar talk, stayed for the good life advice.
Omega is such a thicc tune
Mark, you're a great musician and as a part of one of my favorite bands I eternally applaud you.
Speaking of which, 3:34 the dude in the VoM shirt claps like he's beating it lol
Reptile is one of the greatest songs ever written
Holy smokes, I just bought a Holcomb SE from Pitbull Audio just yesterday!!
0:50 I felt that *subtle* new tat flex
Rocking the MT15. My man!
yayyyyyyyy
Ive always thought PRS guitars were hideous but wow. That thing is stunning.
I want to see the Superiphery shirt :(
That was me in the Superiphery shirt: instagram.com/p/BwpN8okhXeG/
I think they might have more for their next headliner?
Even him tuning the guitar sounds musical.
16:33 this face when you realise the guitar you tuned 15 minutes ago is completely off tune
HE WANTS TO PLAY RACECAR LIVE!!! HOLY SHIT IT'S BEEN SO LONG THEY NEED TO DO IT!
So cool to see Mark’s PRS thru Tremonti’s Mt15. This pairing is exactly what I have, but why no name check for Mr Tremonti?? At Tremonti clinic Mark asked me what guitar I had with me (MH SE), surely these dudes know each other?
Hail Holcomb
I like Mark’s new tattoos.
Coulda watched another hour of this.
1:01:52
those first six notes had me thinking Mark was about to unleash an impromptu "Bubble Dream" by Chon cover
I want to join periphery so bad
Love the numbering and non-theory explanation of MAKE TOTAL DESTROY. I guess Racecar's intro would be something like 3112113611211361121136112113.
@PitbullAudio what camera do you use for the main frame?
Mark is so fucking humble.
Wait a minute...where's his Emperor shirt? 😐
Or that Ramens one
Nah Chicago Bears shirt doper
You guys killed it at the Anaheim show, and now you're shreddin the gnar with these playthroughs! The new album gives me the big metal horn, and Reptile is a mastapiece. You and the guys are true craftsmen. Thanks for the wisdom in this clinic. Also, can confirm that this guitar can make you sound amazing whilst playing poorly.
49:00 starts the carpel tunnel riff.
BTW, I’m wondering what string gauge does he use for that drop-G tuning in Reptile song? 🤔
I love Periphery so much but I wish they new theory!!!!! They have such a musical ear! I love theory so much and it’s weird to me that musicians like them don’t know theory!
It hasn't seemed to stifle them much.
You don’t need to know theory to make a good song.
May I know what clip-on tuner he used during the 16:44 mark?
Dang those 3 kids on the right ask some great questions
Ah ha. He does swap out that nut.
lol as soon as i saw pics with a black nut on it every time he plays i was like yeah... thought so...
the nut on my macassar ebony version is trash but i love the guitar
it isnt really an expensive upgrade
I figured so..also the locking tuners
as an owner of marks SD alpha and omegas, id have to say they definitely make you play differently because my 5150III stealth’s gain through them is so hot but clear
i hope mark got an signature prs amp head like the mt15 or peavey invective.
It's called Axe FX preset lol
I wonder which locking tuners those are and also the nut. I just got the Holcomb SE and would love to change them too.
Considering he is a PRS artist, he would likely be using Phase II/III tuners. The nut may be from PRS too. As for locking SE tuners, MannMade makes drop-in replacements for SE models. (Sorry, I realise this is a few months old.)
No chairs? Dang. Killer clinic.
RIP
What about Portland Mark!!!!!!!!!!!! 8-)
Send me some PRS Locking tuners, and a new nut lol I have one of his sigs and it is awesome!
Is the tuning stability bad with the stock nut??
@@xFindThers it's not insanely bad but it's definitely a good upgrade to make
@@masonbose9658 I see... Im planning to get the satin finish one, but i dont want to spend 900 bucks on an instrument that cant hold a tuning
@@xFindThers it's not too bad honestly, it stays in tune pretty well for me. With a good nut and locking tuners though it'd be more stable especially in a live situation.
Lol Omega is my all time favourite
Mark:it’s ugly it’s ridiculous
how does he do those bends harmonics?
reptile will be the drogon of the 3 dragons
25:38 the guy in the right corner is hailing stan
That pinched harmonic at 46:32!!!
@ 29:57 Mr Miyagi casually walking in the backround 😂
10:36 just ask to Mr.PRS to build you a damn 26.5 scale baritone guitar, daaaa 🙈🤣
just use the prs 277 baritone
Me: Ah man I'm so inspired hearing Mrak talk about music
People at the clinic: 9:11
It would be something else if this guy and mark tremonti did something together
why does he only use his SE's? I would think he'd play his core custom
I wanna be on 3dot one day
is that Gene Wong on 2:35 far left? >:D
41:52
This is what I want
Anyone know what kind of volume/speed knobs he switched to?
Hipshot O-Rings
