      Oh boy, you betrayed to the whole gang of idiots. Breath of the wwild can be good but man, you say western, foolish and serious people, the most chad character you see and so many open world details with fascinating graphics. And Zelda is good for open world. And another fact is: When you play BOTW with sword and shield, it makes you think that are you playing an Elder Scrolls game. Sure graphics are not everything but Rdr2's open world is so huge and beatiful for researching. Zelda is good for combat (which i like to play with sword in games) and variaty of new places to explore is surely great but for me BOTW doesn't need to be upper than 96 metacritic because its too much if you ask me(if you look at Payday 2 it says 74 metacriric, not fair for an online game) and yeah, I think BOTW is overrated as hell. It should be 90 on metacritic.

    The Narrative department at Rockstar I honestly think is the best in the industry. They don't produce new titles or new games often, but when they do they're some of the best characters and stories the entire video gaming industry has to offer.
    The narratives for GTA V and RDR2 were honestly on-par with emmy winning dramas like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones, made even more immersive by the fact that a video game can completely immerse you in the world that story is taking place in. The length and format of the narrative is too different to be compared to most traditional types of storytelling, but when it comes to the overall impact of the characters and the overarching theme of narrative overall, I'd happily put RDR2's campaign against any western story every written.
    Its just that good.

    • @jagath3028
      @jagath3028 2 роки тому +26

      true. No other game ever has side characters(and main characters) with as much depth as rdr2. Throughout the game, you are in a gang, so you encounter either of your friends fighting or arguing or discussing and you can find photographs, letters etc and do missions for them. Its just so good and you care for most of the characters. RDR2 has the best video game story up to date(in my opinion).

    I agree with everything you said here except that the random surprises you find in RDR2 are more like appetizers. I'll agree that most of them aren't as elaborate as the main missions but there are a lot of secrets in the game that aren't marked on the map but are super memorable to me and surprised me a lot (ie the Aberdeen pig farm which has an entire cutscene).

    • @Thod_
      @Thod_ Рік тому +8

      The thing is, as well as everything he mentioned for botw in the entertaining surprises, it also has koroks (if you don’t play botw then I’ll attempt to explain)
      They are little forest spirits that are hidden all around the world, and finding them lets you slowly expand your inventory.
      Each one, you have to do a little fun puzzle to find.
      It may be climbing a tree and lifting a rock there, or diving into a circle of lily pads, or offering fruit to an idol, or balancing the number of apples on trees, or shooting through a hole in a rock, or rolling a boulder down a hillside or anything at all.
      There are 999 of them in Hyrule, and there are so many other fun little moments as well.
      The two games are very evenly matched but botw definitely takes the edge here.

    The whole element of surprise for me in Zelda BOTW actually worked twice with the same thing: the dragons. When I first saw Farosh I was like "Holy shit! Is that a freakin Dragon?!" And then I saw it again with Dinraal. I was like "Ok, there's obviously also an ice dragon somewhere, I'll probably find it eventually, these things are huge after all, not that big a deal." But I couldn't find Naydra, and then I used my camera on the mountain where Naydra was in the first game (which is surrounded by clouds until you cleanse Naydra) and I saw that Naydra was on top of that mountain, and I was like "but why isn't she moving?" so I went to the top and found her corrupted, and I was like "Well....I was not expecting that!"
    And then it happened again in Tears of the Kingdom. I looked up into the night sky, saw a dragon, aimed my camera at it, and it was called...Light Dragon? And I was like "that thing is so high up in the sky, how am I ever gonna reach it?!" I won't say any more than that, since the Light Dragon is a major part of the story and talking to much about it is basically just spoilering everything

    I kinda like they took the idea that you are thrown into this open world though because to take it from links perspective, you woke up and found out you have been asleep for 100 years, and you keep hearing these voices from someone you don't even remember and instantly told you have go and rescue a land that has been lost in your memory's, so while link needs to save the land it also comes back to him trying to remember his place and who everyone was which is where memory's come into play, it definitely isn't as pointed out and we'll told as some stuff in red dead is but its neat to think about

  • @IsaacClodfelter
    @IsaacClodfelter 2 роки тому +33

    Your issue with red dead is solved if you do it kinda backwards.
    If you chose to first use all the more fun but less deadly weapons you die more and money ends up being scarce making buying ammo harder to justify which also makes the ammo enemies drop your main source of bullets.
    It is having to nerf yourself to fix something that already should be like that but it does make the moment to moment combat more fun.

While it’s not emphasized and not focused upon, it still holds some beautiful moments and really fun stories within like Urbosa, Kass, and the Gerudo. It’s the freedom to create your story that makes it so much more fun.

Once you get koraidon or Miraidon and beat a few titans for upgrades, I’d say the best points are A: randomly seeing a titan or B: discovering new Pokémon (either returning or brand spanking new). There are points, but thanks to the map, there’s only a small icon on the map, but nothing related to the game itself. You have to try and go in the direction you think is right, and I LOVE it.

    So while I won't act like BotW's story is a masterpiece, I do really love that the open-world and main story support each other. After leaving the starting area, there is really only one mandatory quest and that is to defeat Ganon, so Link sets out to get stronger in order to do it. Almost everything the player does builds toward that goal whether it be working on the main quest, looking for shrines and koroks, stockpiling strong weapons, or even gathering the choicest bugs and fruits in order to make so many health and strength elixirs that you can take on Ganon without doing anything else. In a lot of games, I feel like the urgency of a strong story makes dicking around in the open-world feel weird at times. BotW's main story is definitely nothing to write home about content wise, but that allows it to pair with the open-world better than any other game I've played.

      It's surprisingly hard for open world games to justify the dicking around. "I need to get stronger because Ganon will kick my ass if I don't" is basic, but effective. Simple works, overcomplicating it risks losing focus.

    • @crowboy7351
      @crowboy7351 5 років тому +28

      mariokarter13 Yes!! And the best part of it is that you can verify it at any time. There's nothing stopping you from going straight to Ganon at any time to see if you're strong enough. There's no required amount of strength you need to be to fight him. It isn't just how much Link has grown, it's how much you've grown as a player. And that just makes it feel that much more authentic.

    • @DougDoug
      @DougDoug  5 років тому +249

      I agree, I think the story is perfect for what Zelda wants to be. The memories add a bit of background, but mostly they let things in the world remain a mystery, which I loved. And like I mentioned in the video, Red Dead's story really doesn't mesh with the open world at all, so while I did enjoy the story, it felt more like a movie than a videogame. Whereas Zelda is just... videogame perfection

    One part I’m sad you didn’t mention about BOTW is the small stories and events of the past you can try to piece together by observing the environment.
    Like seeing a well in the distance, then riding/walking up to it, seeing some broken wood laying around and other stuff, and realizing “wow, this used to be a town. Jeez.”
    Little stuff like that is really great. To go with food comparisons, it’s like while you’re out making your tacos in Hyrule’s kitchen, you see some stains on the counter. You pause for a minute, inspect the stains in the kitchen, and realize “wow, that’s marinara sauce. Wonder what that was used for?” and then go back to making tacos. It’s small, and doesn’t stick in your head for super long, but it’s still pretty neat and interesting to find.

    • @joeMama-ft9sz

    • @Arkalidor
      @Arkalidor 5 років тому +11

      An other way to look at it, in the video, Doug referred to story as wondering where all the ingredients came from, and the trick in Hyrule kitchen is that you're told nothing, but every ingredient comes in packaging with riddles for kids on it, but solving the riddles gives you info on where the food was cultivated, how it was prepared etc. And sure, ultimately it's nothing groundbreaking. I mean, if you've got any experience as a cook, you have at least a bit of an idea of how cheese is made from milk, and you're not going to suddenly find out we're using fish milk or something completely unexpected... but the chase to get the info was fun, and if you're curious about all this, you'll have a great time looking for it.
