You don't need to finish the masteries to get spirit shards with your extra experience. If you can't gain any experience in your activated track, the extra experience still goes to a hidden bar, which generates spirit shards when full. Common misunderstanding.
Been playing for 3 and half years so far, watched so many videos about everything i could find on youtube about this game, and yet here it is another video that is absolutely new for me and answering a question i had for so long and now i am so glad i found this video i can make someting useful for my overloaded inventory with t5 materials
I am by no means an expert at this game but I can tell you a great way to get spirit shards is WvW. Lvl 80s can consume Tomes of Knowledge for spirit shards or you can just sell those tomes back to the mystic forge vendor for spirit shards. Not to mention you get spirit shards in chest rewards from bags in WvW as well. If you run WvW a few times a week you'll for sure get some tomes of knowledge.. ever wonder how to use these "USELESS" items? Well if you don't have an alt that needs leveling, then bam.
Other than transmuting, you use them to buy the Anthology of Heroes to easily change stats on Ascended weapons and armor instead of crafting a whole new set. Like for eg the random ascended weap/armor chests you get that have stats you'd never use. You can buy the AoH, 5 ectos, an exotic inscription/insignia of the stats you want on that armor/weapon and the Ascended you want to change stats on in the Mystic Forge and voila. Cheap stat change. Depending on how much it cost to make the inscription/insignia. But hey, you weren't going to use those Cleric stat or Rampager stat ascended boxes taking up space in your inventory were you? I hope not.
I would advise ppl not to do this if they plan to craft legendaries in the future. Spirit shard and karma (generally anything that's not tradable) worth much more than gold.
I play between 5-20 hrs per week and I have been filling my armory since 2012, however I have to say that I do not have an excess of spirit shards. So I would caution those who want to build a lot of legendary items that they could run out of shards, especially if they burn em up for profit.

Are they actually looted? I dont think so. They are gained on every level up after 80. Seperate to your masteries. If you work on your masteries you dont really see the "regular" level. Thats why they seem to pop up on killing a mob or gathering. Because they give xp and might give you a level. Hence spirit shard "loot" everywhere
another commenter suggested that there is an invisible bar of sorts that keeps track of spirit shard exp separate to your masteries track. learn something new everyday!

I've obtained shards at the middle of a "lvl" in the spirit shard bar so yes I think they can be looted rarely (like black lion key or rusted keys for example) on mobs.
I confirm they can be looted, I've received a few and it wasn't from a level up, invisble of not. I've been paying extra attention after others claimed they can't be looted so I wanted to verify by myself.
One important warning -- many many *many* prices in the House are ridiculously inflated, due to a design flaw in the whole system: There's no way to downprice anything that isn't selling. That is, I make an item because the market price is 44g. I only want to sell that item, so I price it at 43g. It doesn't sell. It sits there.... for month after month after month... Because the prices I saw were inflated... as is mine, though I did not know that. In reality, the actual price at which that thing will sell readily is 25g, perhaps. But they only way -- *the **_only_** way* -- for me to lower that price is to EAT the 5% cost and then REPOST at a lesser cost, which ALSO charges me *another* 5%... This is the *only possible way* to lower the price of something that isn't selling at a given price point. Once the market and the real price get disconnected, those things just sit on the market forever -- I have one thing up for about 43g that has been there for over a YEAR. And I had half a dozen other things which were put up for the lowest price on the market at the time, and they sat there for 8 to 9 *months* before finally selling -- and the actual price of those things in the market was literally 2/3rds of my price at one point, almost every one of them. I would happily have dropped the prices of each of them by 10gp if it had made them more able to be sold, I wanted the gold, not the item. Bitch at ArenaNet about this. Because there isn't a user-sale system anywhere in the real world which charges you a second time for _lowering_ the price of something for sale. Once an item hasn't sold at its current price, after 90 days, you should be allowed to drop the price without being charged a second time for the listing.
Yeah spirit shards are actually one of the best ways to make money. it helps to have data to look at so you know what mats are worth promoting. But the top TP barons are always in need of Spirit Shards. Don't sleep on them!

how to make gold daily. i do dailys, home instance, guild hall farm, farm flex in 3 spots, farm rich platinum in 3 spots and get chests from 4 JP (with alts), but I do not what to do with the items/materials, so my gold never up.
Depending on how much excess spirit shards you have, selling the highest tier could work well. Now I will say that occasionally the tier 5 versions sometimes are much higher in cost benefit so keep that in mind!
