I had meant to focus more on the kits you would be using hundreds of times but I should've given a nod to the BL kit.
The BL kit has a 100% chance of extracting the upgrades and salvaging the item. Until you have a stockpile of these you should mainly use them on very expensive things, such as removing a rune from an item when you want to keep the rune, but don't care about the item itself.
The BL kit doesn't salvage upgrades -- it extracts them. It's a subtle but important distinction.
BL Kits are also the best (i.e., most certain) way to get Globs of Dark Matter.
@@nikhosinthemachine True! I've edited the post for clarification
I have a stockpile of Black Lion kits so I use them when I salvage Exotics (when I don't toss them in the Mystic Toilet). But I suppose I should be paying attention to the upgrades and only using them when they upgrades are valuable.
I have 22 stacks of BL kits atm, use them for cheaper exotics.
3 years on and still by far the most useful salvaging guide.
Another reason to roll stuff in the mystic forge: if you have items that are account bound, they (sometimes) can be thrown into that mystic forge recipe to yield something that you can then at least toss onto the trading post even if it doesn't increase in rarity. Note that if you throw in a random assortment OR substitute one of the items with one of those mystic forge stones, you will get a random item type. So you could toss in 2 axes and 2 spearguns and get a greatsword out of it.
Pay attention to item levels too! If you use a level 60 item in the mix, it will limit the max level of what you get out of it, meaning you definitely don't get a precursor.
If you want to save a few coins, you can get the savlage kits from a vendor in Dragonfall, Living World Season 4 map, for karma.
The copper-fed salvage-o-matic is also the best occupant of your first shared inventory slot, assuming you have more than two or three characters. It's not just the money--it's the surprisingly large amount of character inventory space taken up by lugging around spare salvage kits. I use three shared inventory slots for salvage: copper-fed salvage-o-matic, Mystic Salvage Kit, and a BL kit for salvaging oranges.
I had completely forgotten about the Mystic Salvage Kit. Thanks for the reminder. I'll go and make a few.
Omg I didn't know you could right click and salvage all items of x rarity. I've been manually clicking entire inventories of items for years...
@The Soul of Epstein kinda sad eh ?
That sounds.....extremely painful
F
I did the same for months. But years is too much lol
I did that too, before they added the right-click option.
Keep in mind it will salvage your unidentified items too, so either pull those out of your inventory or id them first.
The question ping sound from league of legends when you went into the salvage kit description gave me PTSD. Thought I was a jungler again.
Indeed always identify your unidentified gear! A little while ago I had a Tooth of Frostfang (axe precursor) from the blue unidentified gear. :D
yeah i identified The Chosen precursor 4 mins in walking around Dry Top and I almost salvaged it until i checked to see how much it was worth - ALWAYS open the Black Lion market and see what stuff is worth in your inv before salvaging yellows and oranges
Anet should hire you for these kind of tutorial videos
What are these "Tutorials"? I don't think that's in ArenaNet's vocabulary LOL
7:15 Well damn. I’ve definitely been racking up mystic forge stone, and accidentally made my mule character my main (where I do most of the events/meta/gathering/new expansion on), so this is gonna be a game changer for me xD
Thsnks a bunch as always ❤️❤️❤️
For the record, in my 1 year-ish of playing, I've had 6 precursors drop, 4 of them have been from the mystic forge recipe he mentioned at the end, and 3 of those 4 have been either Dawn or Dusk. PLEASE use that recipe! The output is as specific as your input, i.e. you put in 4 lv 80 yellow warhorns, you'll get back a rare or better lv 80 warhorn. You put in 4 lv 80 exotic weapons, you'll get back a lv 80 exotic weapon.
Holy moly. That's something. Veteran here who's played since release and flushed inventories of rares and exotics on more occassions than I can remember. 0 precursor drops. Not complaining, I still have my fun but the contrast compared to your first year struck me :').
You got some good luck rng. I do the same and after ten years 0 precursors.
I have all these salvage tools and have been playing for years; I don't know why I watched this, but I'm glad I did because I wasn't aware of the yellow great sword tip. Thanks!
Did not know that about the mystic kits, I thought they were just given with the level 80 boast. From a pure cost ration 250 of those is definitely a better value that 1.5ish gold that 250 of Master's would cost you.
You have to remember that the forge stones have value as well (just not traded value and they are time locked rewards). I do agree the cost is still better, particularly with the ease of living improvements provided from having 250 kits available.
@@ericcooke2661 The stones don't really have any other use other than being turned into Mystic kits though. Only possible exception would be 3x high level exotic greatswords + 1 mystic stone to gamble for dawn/dusk. Every other possible conversion with mystic stones is just significantly worse value than using them as Mystic kits imo.
@@kekburman that is definitely true, I just find when I farm I can run through a mystic kit faster than gain mystic stones.
It always bugs me if people refer to one salvage kit as a stack of 25 because they are not 25 salvage kits as you cant split the stack or stack them higher. ^^'
@@kekburman The stones do not count as a specific weapon type. The effect would be the same as rolling 3 greatswords and a staff together. If you want to guarantee you get a greatsword out of it, you'd want to use 4 greatswords.
Great point on checking the market value for items there, As you should always check exotics before salvaging as they are often better selling then salvaging - sometimes better to use a black lion kit if you have a lot stored on it for both the rune and at times the insignia, depending per exotic. And some rares like Greatswords as you mentioned, as well as if you get a reclaimed weapon, which sells for a lot more then you can get from salvaging it unless you want the reclaimed salvage of course!
There’s guides are helpful for me as a new player, thanks as always!
Good video! I would like to see a video about bufffood and utility items. How and where do you get the recipes? What are the best for each playstyle (power, condi, heal, tank), what are good budget alternatives (because mostly the best are also pricey) and what is the best way to acquire the materials to craft them (maybe a bit too broad but a hint would be nice).
I'll add it to the idea list
That’s a great idea!
I used mystic on everything until I got the cooperfed for the convenience of carrying less kits. Very well done with the information.
I loved that question mark effect with the sound!!
Green is better then blue? Lol I get so confused by there color coding in this game. Great video! Helps an old returning player
OMGosh. Thank-you. GW2 salvaging is so intense! I have to play this clip over again to get it. Thx
If you have shared inventory slots then put the unidentified gear in there (or in a invisible bag) so you can safely salvage all x rarity gear without it being eaten. Shared is best if you play multiple toons but only one has a lot a lot of bag space. Or put the salvage tool in the shared but don't stack up 250 blue, green, yellows and open them with little bag space unless you like being encumbered.
Great video! I would point out not to use runecrafters on green items like a rings since of coarse because it doesn't have runes. Use the copperfed for that.
I find myself watching your videos purely beacuse its your videos. I learn things along the way but even if its a topic i think i am well versed in i will still watch. Keep it up!
I’m going to start saving my rare greatswords and swords for the mystic forge now, that 500 gold looks juicy. Great video as always
If remember correctly, if you accidentally salvage all greens while you have unidentified greens in your inventory, you could press Esc to stop the salvaging.
Closing the inventory window will stop the process, so you can close the inventory then reopen it to stop it.
Boy. I WISH throwing 4 yellows into the forge was a guaranteed exotic. That would be awesome. I've been chasing Tooth of Frostfang and one of the Greatswords for almost a year.
My experience is that it is about a 20% to receive an upgraded item. So 20% chance to receive a orange from 4 yellows. Of course, the odds of getting a precursor to a legendary are far more remote, even though they are also orange. I've playing for 8 years--probably thrown a 4,000 yellows in the mystic forge--and that's only happened to me once. Happily, it was Dusk, and started me on crafting my first legendary. It also happened about 4 or 5 months into playing the game, which is why I threw all those yellows in after it. :)
that would be extremely unbalanced and would destroy the market
@@revani4234 Possibly? I'm launching every exotic weapon I get back into the forge either way, so from my perspective it doesn't affect the market much. But the way it sits now, you basically have to buy the precursors, because of the comically low drop rates.
@@aidonis98 That's why they added the option to craft them. Although half of them are more expensive when crafted, which is really unfortunate.
Thanks for the trick about the 4 of one kind into the great toilet... I kind of already suspected that but never knew for sure =)
This is a really excellent video. I so wish I had come across it a long long time ago. I'll have to check out the rest of the channel.
I did manage to get Dusk once through a green(!) unidentified gear. Kept it though because I'm a fashion war addict. xD
Awesome guide, ty so much, just started this amazing game I needed this !
Great guide, The salvage-o-matics are a huge quality of life improvement and my only regret is that i did not get them sooner.
same, I've had the copper fed one for a couple years now and only recently bought the silver fed one when it popped up
hay mukluk, thanks for the video, something i did not know is that you can throw 4 of the same yellow wepon item in to the froge and get out the next level up (only been playing the game for about a month) I am going to give that a try as I am still working on assended gear and had no idear that easy way exsisted. might be worth doing a video on the mistic forge, I am sure a lot of new player like my self have no idear 1/3 of the things it can do for them.
Nice informative video on salvage kits. Always good to see explanations of some of the esoteric mechanics in GW2 lol
Muk, ive probably salvaged hundreds and hundreds of bags without opening them 1st. Thank you for the videos!
The one thing I've never really had 100% confirmed about salvaging has to do with using the Runecrafter's kit for greens. Is it for sure worthwhile to pay an additional 27c over the copper-fed just to salvage the upgrades and get a slightly higher chance at better materials? If there's any hard data on this I'd love to see it!
Don’t do it. It’s a scam!! Too many layers of RNG make it harder for you to decide if it’s not worth it. I have flushed so much gold down the toilet buying it and using it. Barely have enough charms to show for it. Would have been way better off buying the charms with that money and using the 3copper salvage kit. Remember, you not only have to make enough gold to justify spending 30c instead of 3c, but also enough to cover the cost of the salvage kit. Which is going to be over 150 gold. That a shit ton of gold…. These things don’t print money. They help the house win.
I honestly rarely get charms using the runecrafter. I haven't been all that pleased with it and wouldn't recommend it based on my experience/luck.
If you've got money to burn and gems to spend, the copper-fed is the way to go, and simply crafting the 250 mystic for the yellows works just fine.
UA-cam isn't letting me post my numbers some reason.
Short version: I played since Launch, so got worried I am losing money not salvaging greens with Runecrafters. Used wiki data from "Rune/salvage research" to do some easy math. Runecrafters nets you ~43c more per salvage, which assuming you buy it for 180 gold from gemstore would take approx 168 stacks of greens to recoup. I'll be playing GW2 for a number of years into the future, so I'll be buying this next time it comes on TP.
Ty Muk, great video.

8:14 "It is so nice and so easy".... Yeah if only I had 320 inventory slots lol xD
Liked, for real, and subscribed!
Thank you from a new GW2 player
i just cameback 2 week ago and was looking if there is an infinite salvaging kit, good news i just learned it exist, bad new i probably lost a lot of gold because i never identify before salvaging, thanks for the good tutorial 👍
One last thought on runes/sigils! Some superior sigils/runes (and even a few major ones) are worth a fair bit of gold. Learn what sigils and runes are highly sought after on the trading post and do not use a regular/runecrafters salvage kit on any gear you find with those upgrades. Make use of the BL salvage kits you might have from daily login rewards and save the upgrade for selling or keeping for your own builds!
Awesome video - I actually didn't know about salvage kits nor the mystic forge either I guess. LOL
No mention of the cost difference between using a Copper-Fed vs Basic and especially the Silver-Fed vs Master kit. A lot of people look at the 60c cost per use for the Silver-Fed and thus ignore it without realizing that the Master kit costs 61.44c per use. If Mystic Salvage Kits didn't exist (10.5c per use, if you ignore the Mystic Forge Stones like I do. At 50 Gems each, the 3 of them you need adds 69g to the total, putting the cost at 69g 26s 24c and a cost/use of 27s 70.5c), the Silver-Fed Salvage-O-Matic would be as much of a no-brainer as the Copper-Fed is.
based on my napkin math 250 uses of the silverfed kit would cost 1g50s which i think speaks to if you have the mystic forge stones lying around mystic salvage kits are more cost effective if less convenient since the kits to make those cost 26s24c plus 3 mystic forge stones (the price of which i don't really know how to evaluate as it can also be traded once a day for a provisioners token and as a substitute for one item of the same type in the mystic forge). So my conclusion is mystic salvage kits seem to be around 6 times cheaper to use than the silver fed kit for the same effect (minus the risk of running out of charges but since you can have 1-3 mystic salvage kits on you and refill that risk seems negligible.
Great video, thank you for this all your other helpful guides!
Question though, what about the Black Lion Salvage kit in the gem shop? It's 300 gems so cheaper than the others, and does not list a cost per use, while having a massively higher 50% chance for rarer materials, at the cost of excluding infusions. Is that also infinite use? Unless I'm missing something wouldn't that one be the best one by far due to the rarer mats chance?
Or wait.. is that seriously a one-time use item for 300 gems?
Black Lion Kit has 25 uses, that one is the best kit but not infinite. You will get some for free from daily login rewards you can save them for when its really important.
FWIW a miserly tip: The copper fed salvage-o-matic is super convenient but IT WILL NOT MAKE YOU MONEY. Still worth it to pay the extra but since basic salvage kits can be had for 77 karma (not even gold) they are functionally free and the gems you need for copper fed represent a lot of potential gold you could keep. Still worth it for the convenience but just don't think youre saving money with copper fed over the basic kits, youre not.
Hey muk you missed one kit The ascended one.
great video btw keep up the good work
It's the only one (besides BL) that works on ascended gear. Not much to say there
@@moo3oo3oo3 Black lion kits don't work on ascended
This was very helpful. I'd be curious about Ascended salvage kits. I have all these weird random ascended pieces i earned via various places that i didn't get to select stats on and theyre always some bizarre unuseful stats id never wear but theyre just taking up space in inventory. Should injust grab some ascended salvage kits and salvage them? I cant sell them so i dunno what else to do.
Been using since i started master salvage kit on everything now wonder i was never getting much, now i had few stacks of 250 greens and blues and saw a big difference, i bought rune salvage for greens itens cause its what i salvage the most cause i do train routes and i got alot of greens.
Pretty much assumed that whenever blue unidentified gear falls below 1 silver I salvage them, greens below 2 silver I salvage them, ever since ectoplasms price basically got cut I’ve saved up over 7000 yellows and never looked back.
Thanks for the guide Muk!
7:52 this was the I am such an idiot moment. Tell me I'm not the only one :D
Is identifying and salvaging these items affected by magic find?
Not that I have ever heard, no
That was my question, too. Thanks for asking. I wonder if any boon or anything affects salvage results?
You could also just exchange the price of the copper-fed kit (800 gems) for 175 gold at the current market price. I highly doubt you are gonna make that amount of gold in profits any time soon. Only if you use it since the release of the game. Quick math time:
Cost per salvage with Copper-Fed Salvage-o-Matic: 3 copper
Cost per salvage with Basic Salvage Kit (equivalent): 3,52 copper (25 uses for 88 copper)
That means to offset of 175 gold that you would have gotten for exchanging the gems, you need to salvage 3.365.384 items... yeah, over 3 million items.
The next time the other salvage kits (besides the copper one, which I have) are in the gem store I'm 100% getting them.
Very good info. Thanks!
I use copper-fed on blue as well as green. Is that rune-salvage thing really worth the gems?
Yes, but it's a longterm investment. Unless your play GW2 on a regular basis and do a lot of events that produce green loot, I'd stick with the Copper-Fed for anything that's not Yellow rarity or above.
I started playing GW 2 during season 2. Ectos were 60 silver. In this video, ectos are 22 silver. Now they are around 12 s. Or just about 1/2 price over one year. So next year.... ughhh. Sooo now, is it even worth spending the extra money to try and get ectos instead of just buying what you need now?
thats a very good question...
Muk, ur guides are gold. Literally. (i mean yeah i know gw2 gold isnt real but u get my point)
This is something I was looking into
I thought that salvaging upgrades meant % chance for taking it out on destroying items. Also I didn't know about selling yellow greatswords, thanks for that.
I believe it used to mean that, before they changed the system and made Lucent Motes/Charms the output result instead.
did u make the Mystic forge salvage kit by putting 1 of each top kits in the forge
Excellent. Thank you.
Thx Mukluk i bought 350 yellow at the Auction house and i got rly luckt and got a Dusk ^^ worth 430 Gold atm. Shall add i got alot of Crap Orange to.
wow, thats honestly super lucky congrats!
hey so i salvage all items (green blue grey white) if possible instead of vendor stuff? kinda new and learning things :) and thanks for ur youtube/twitch content consuming it a lot atm while learning the game
In general yes, you do have exceptions as Muk points out. That it's better to sell on the TP, (IE) yellow great swords and most exotics.
@@spencers4121 thank u . thats why i asked for freen blue and grey not the others :) as a wow player you vendor most of the stuff thats why its kinda weird to destroy even trash items. But now i got the knowledge. thanks :)
Basically salvage everything Rare/Yellow and lower, just make sure to salvage with the appropriate kits outlined in the vid. The gray/trophy items you vendor/sell to NPC's. Exotics/Oranges you either salvage or sell on the TP depending on the item value (assuming you don't need/want the item)
I've opened and salvaged 10s of thousands green piece unindentified gear at this point, still waiting for my first precursor.
What should i use on exotics? Should i even scrap exotics?
If you are trying to min-max, then sell them on the trading post if they are worth more than 1-2 ectos. If not use then good salvage kit on exotics to try to get ectos.
Pay attention to what upgrades on the exotic gear you get, sometimes there's valuable runes/sigils (maybe even an infusion if you're lottery lucky). THEN check the price/determine if you want to salvage/sell
to have ectos without buying them from the TP.
Thanks yall :D
After you've done what Muk suggested, you should also look at the upgrade on it, and see how valuable it is. Some upgrades can be worth as much as 50+ silver, so in these cases, it might be worth salvaging it with a black lion salvage kit, so you get the actual upgrade back.
ah yes. returning after 9 years, it is nice to see that the mystic toilet is still prevelant
Should also Said to put unidentified to shared slot and indentify them from There to not acidentally salvaging them
Outside the scope of this video, I did cover that in the inventory management guide though
10:52 am I the only hearing "for those of you who don't want to know all the reasons 4head" LUL im sure it used to say "for it" but now I cant unhear it
Question: If I don't own a runecrafter kit, specifically for greens WITH sigils/runes, shouldn't I use a Master kit on them and not a basic? Because the TL;DR at the end you said to just use basic on greens if you don't have a runecrafter kit. But isn't it important to optimize your chance of getting charms?
Holy fuck. I must have salvaged tens of thousands of unidentified items.....
What about black lion salvage kit?
I had meant to focus more on the kits you would be using hundreds of times but I should've given a nod to the BL kit.
The BL kit has a 100% chance of salvaging the upgrades. Until you have a stockpile of these you should mainly use them on very expensive things, such as removing a rune from an item when you want to keep the rune, but don't care about the item itself.
Does it matter which kit I use to salvage ectos for crystalline dust?
If you're working on legendary runes/sigils, I would suggest using runecrafters on inexpensive rares too. It's largely where symbols of control come from and currently they're insanely expensive. They're the big punch in the face expense for legendary sigils. ...is it an ecto loss? Yes. But you still get plenty of ecto and currently I doubt the loss is an expense offset. If, in the future, the cost of control symbols change, that's another story.
Thank you!
Please correct me if im wrong, but isnt the copperfed better than the runecrafters for greens?
You pay 27copper more for using the runecrafters and get a Lucent mote and a 10% higher chance of rare materials in return. Lucent motes are currently at about 10copper (minus the transaction costs but ill ignore those). That means the 10% higher chance of rare materials has to give us at least 17 copper per salvage on average to be as good as the copperfed. So a proc of rare materials has to be worth at least 1 silver and 70 copper more than what you would get without a procc. And with most materials that isnt be the case. So unless the price for materials and/or for lucent motes rises, the copperfed is actually better value.
Thats at least my understanding, if I'm mistaken at some point please tell me ^^
It isn't just the lucent motes but also the charms which are worth way more.
@@MuklukUA-cam Ah ok, that makes sense
What about exotics?
If it’s better to salvage most of the yellows than to sell them, then shouldn’t I be buying the cheapest ones and salvaging them?
Does someone know the math in regards to using the mystic salvage kit on green items? Without the price of forge stones, they are cheaper than journeyman salvage kits per activation and the kit is closer to the runecrafters.
Is there an easy or even an understandable answer to the following question:
How much "more" is the runecrafter kit worth on salvaging greens compared to the copper-fed?
The question has been bugging me for quite some time and I have yet to find an answer. Thanks in advance should anyone have an answer for me
Salvaging a rune/sigil will get you on average 1-3 Lucent motes (depending on the rarity of the rune/sigil) which are worth around 15 copper each. As masterwork items (the green ones you should be spending the Runecrafter kit on) mostly have major runes/sigils, which tend to drop around 2 motes, the increase in cost is pretty much covered (Runecrafter's costs 30 copper per use vs the 3 copper of the Copper-fed kit).
Beyond that, everything extra you get is profit, including both the higher chance for rarer materials (which are usually worth significantly more than the lower tier, for reference Orichalcum runs for almost double the price of Mithril) and the chance for charms, which are rare salvage drops from the runes/sigils.
Charms can sell from 25 to 50 silver, depending on whether you get a Charm of Skill (cheapest), Potence or Brilliance (most expensive). These seem to drop between 2 and 10% of the time (again, depending on the rarity of the rune/sigil). Assuming you're mostly getting major runes on your equipment to salvage, which have around a 3% chance to drop a charm, on average you'll be getting an extra ~1.3 silver per item. Being pessimistic we can slash 30% off, to account for TP taxes and bad RNG.
TL;DR: Very worth it, you should be getting at least 1 extra silver per masterwork item salvaged. This can add up to multiple gold extra in the most common open world farms (Silverwastes and Dragon Fall for example), as green unid gear is very common there.
Values were calculated with the current Trading post prices and the salvage rates calculated by community efforts on the wiki so they're definitely not set in stone, but should give you an idea of what to expect.
@@imVidzzz Thanks! That was exactly the answer I was hoping for! Great work
I've been salvaging the wrong way all my Tyrian life xD
When do you advise to use black lion salvage kits? I now use them on unwanted orange items.
Save 1 for moments where you really need it, use any excess you get as much as you want on oranges/yellows IMO.
@@MuklukUA-cam Thanks. Excellent vid.
Great video thank you
I see notification from Muk and I click.
do higher tier salvage kits yield higher tier essences of luck while salvaging blues and greens?
not that I've ever heard
Wait... Are you saying that "Chance of rarer materials" is related to Globs of Ectoplasm? Was that changed at some point? Because there were lots of people trying to figure this out in 2012-2013, & last I checked the Crude Salvage Kit, which has 0 chance of rarer materials, still dropped Ectos. Or did I misunderstand? It seemed like you were saying to use Yellow Salvage kits on Rares for a greater chance of Ectos.
thanks
Thank you
Well done sir.
I just wish these kits would appear in the damn store, I've been waiting for them every day for 2 weeks now. It's so upsetting.
Unfortunately you missed your window. They only rotate into the store around every 6 months and the last time they did was just a month ago. You can take a look at the “release schedule” (I think is what it’s called) section of the wiki page for the item to know when the last time it was added to the store for the past few years to give you an idea of when it’ll come around again
They were just all up 20% off, on July 27.
Missed it by *that* much.
watching this video again and just noticed the price of dusk (to sell) is lower now 😭😭😭
Just what i need ❤❤❤
You the best, Muk!
