Buy less food. Eat leftovers. Meal plan. Actually buying less has probably been the biggest way we’ve saved money and waste less. All three combined definitely help. Good tips!
This 100%. Also, plan your meals around anticipated food waste. If a recipe says to use a handful of herbs, you bet the rest is turning into pesto. Same with green onions, any leftovers turn into an amazing Chinese style green onion infused oil that is amazing with noodles. Also I never buy leafy greens like lettuce that can’t be cooked. You can basically sneak blended up greens into any (?) recipe. Last tip: leftover tofu blended up with spices, oil and nutritional yeast = any creamy sauce your heart desires, very good with pasta! You’re welcome 😊
If storing in a container with paper towel, put the towel on top and then store the container upside down,, zo the towel is at the bottom. This way it's easy to refresh the towel when needed.
Thx for the tip
🤓
Very smart 👌
I store tomatoes in the fridge because I always get fruitflies if they are out. I can not handle fruitflies 🤷
As someone that has been in the restaurant industry for atleast 15 years I've never had an issue with weevils in my flour. Neither at work or at home. Weevils are unfortunately part of the milling process. Typically when buying flour their eggs are in with it. The best way you can ensure you don't have any is to freeze the flour then sift prior putting into airtight containers.
Also, cut off a tiny bit from the stems of herbs before you put them in the "vase", just like you would with flowers. With a fresh cut they can absorb the water much better than when the cut has dried.
When you bring a bag of flour home put the whole bag in a plastic bag and freeze it for three days. This will kill any bugs and eggs that are in it. Then thaw it completely to room temp. before taking it out of the plastic to prevent condensation on the paper. Then store it in airtight bug-proof containers.
Wow I wonder if it would be safe to eat in like cookie dough recipes
And thanks for this awesome tip
My Japanese grandma taught me, for peeled garlic, store them in soy sauce. They last forever and now you have soy sauce garlic! 💕
Awesome idea 💡
@@pawshands9706 that's a great idea to try,
For foods that are about to go bad I usually chuck them into a big pot and make some kind of vegan soup/stew.
i wish all grocery stores wouldn't let their food go bad, because each grocery store probably throws tons of food in the landfills all the time...No one seems interested in donating 'not-fresh food' to homeless shelters / people / poor people....i once heard of a lady in Oregon who was rescuing some of the food in grocery stores to give to homeless, etc....
Around here we have many groceries that donate to the food shelves in their area. You're limited to what is able to be donated. Hot ready to eat and foods held at hot temps aren't typically able to be donated. Sometimes in this area we have so much leftover product even from food shelves that's just going bad. It's really a problem.
If I get fresh tomatoes from a fruit stand or my own backyard, they will never see the inside of a refrigerator. If I buy tomatoes from a grocery store, they immediately go into the fridge because that's where they came from; the inside of a refrigerated truck. They go bad faster if I leave them out because the cell walls have already started deteriorating before I even bought them. All grocery store tomatoes are mealy.
The celery in foil thing did not work for me. But this time I tried to cut the celery head and leaves portion and store the sprigs in water in a container in the fridge and it has already lasted more than a month
Tupperware has a container made for chopped carrots and celery in water, not sure how healthy their plastic is however
Do you cut the bottom of the stalks as well?
@@InkdBaker yes I cut off the stalks till the leaves start growing. You also need to change the water every few days
I had those creepy gross flour bugs one time and I was HORRIFIED. Thanks for that tip!
Not sure if it's just me, but the background music during the olive oil ad was a bit too loud... I found it really distracting from being able to hear Candice's voice :/
It’s not just you :)
I watched this the other day when you originally posted and then went to show it to my roommate and it wasn't here. I was so confused so thank you for putting it back up whatever happened there!
Vinegar doesn't kill bacteria, chlorine does. Make sure it's one that's suitable for vegetable sanatizing
Thanks for sharing these great tips for making your food last longer Candice. Yes groceries are getting more expensive so we have to make sure we don't waste any. Love 🥰 the video and love 💞 Candice.
i was taught that fruits and vegetables need to breathe
so putting them in plastic bags will suffocate them
i just put my greens in an open bag in the humidity controlled drawer
Recipe request: sandwiches! I'm stuck in a rut of peanut butter and jelly, chickpea salad, or tofurkey lol. So, I'd love some easy sandwich ideas. Especially ones that store well to take lunch at work. Thanks!
Plant a moringa tree on your backyard. It has edible leaves, edible flowers, edible seeds, edible young pods and its easy to propagate. the leaves alone has the protein of 12 glasses of milk.
My biggest and only problem with greens is the leaves drying out and wilting
My issues aren't berries going bad, but going into the fridge a few after after grocery shopping to no berries. Lol
The berry tip is so helpful oh my gosh
Good ideas! My problem is limp carrots and old baby dark leafy greens in plastic bags.
Store potatoes separately from onions.
Talk to me about storing tomatoes!!! I went on vacation once where a few couples shared a house.... one of the women kept insisting on putting MY TOMATOES in the fridge. I had to have a come to Jesus moment with her.
Great advice. Thanks Candice.
Thanks for these tips!! I can’t wait to try them.
I really needed this 😭😭 thank you!
Cleaning and prepping helps so much

Thank you for putting all these tips in one spot!! I knew a handful but not all. I love keeping my produce fresh bc 1. everything is so expensive now and 2. i hate waste!

Love your tips and recipes! One of my favorites is french fried nachos! Such yummy comfort food!
Really love it! Will try this soon :) thank you again for sharing… subscribed to your channel 😀☺️
love all of these tips! putting paper towels in the fridge is genius
Thanks for the great tips! I hate wasting food.
Love all the tips!
When I put a paper towel on top of the greens and under that come in the plastic container they last for at least two weeks!
This was a really good post, I love your method and will be incorporating some of your methods starting tomorrow.
I've been creating an herbed oil by taking my favorite herbs and mixing them with between 1/4 to 1/2 cup of evoo. It wips up to just at or over 16ozs. which I store in a glass jar and use as a sauce base for numerous dishes. To keep this herbed oil fresh, I smooth out the remaining portion in the jar and cover the remainder with evoo to block air and it's lasted me for a month. But generally this combo is gone way before that time.
You also have to be careful of this. If you don't do your research on infused oils you may get sick. Botulism is something that can make you very sick. Its typically from this kinda thing and like swollen cans and such.
Thank you! Great video..Do you have a link or discount link for us on the oil!
It’s all in the description!
I'm always terrible with carrots! I buy a bag then put them in the fridge and forget them. Then when I remember them they've sprouted roots and shoots!!
Hey Candice! I've been a long time subscriber and love your content. I don't know why I haven't thought to ask before, but my mom always made this cheesy chicken broccoli casserole (I'm from the midwest U.S.) served over rice and I've tried to veganize it before but have never really gotten it just right. I don't know if its the type of dairy free milk that I'm using or cheese or chick'n pieces or what. I was wondering if you could help me!?
Tupperware fridge smart containers are worth the investment! I have had mine for probably over 10 years. I throw most of my produce in there, and it lasts SO much longer than it did before I bought them.
“Lead-Safe Mama” has a a section about Tupperware. She has tested the brand, and at least the older products have high levels of lead. She shows photos and years made.
I inherited so much Tupperware and painted Corning-ware. I switched them out for glass.
@@ginac7235 I will look into this more. I don't think that the Tupperware I have is considered vintage, but my mom certainly has stuff that she has had for 30 years.
You are so beautiful ❤️ and thanks for inspiration.

I need one for mushrooms. The prices for them shot up😔
I put them in a paper bag. If you forget them, they'll dehydrate, so you'll have dried mushrooms :) I never lost a mushroom since I do that
@@marcfredette7328 in the fridge?
I'm so late to this is not necessarily storing but if you notice your lettuce wilting just place bowl with ice and water leave it in there for 15 minutes and drain
You will have crispy fresh lettuce all over again
I'm having Déjà vu I swear you already uploaded this
Doesn’t the bay leaf affects the taste of flour?
olive oil sounds legit :)
wonder if my mushrooms would be okay in the veggie cloth bags I bought???
Yes I do this all the time you don't need an extra one only for mushrooms :)
Re-upload?
Those flour bugs are nassstaaay. Thanks for the bay leaf trick!
does anyone have tips for keeping cilantro?
Yes in a glass jar filled with water and a produce bag loosely covered over it. It stays for weeks!
@@Crystal_m11 do you keep it in the fridge?
@@ashtentygret yes, sorry! Place it in the fridge and don't forget to take off the elastic that comes around it. Kind of arrange it like flowers in a glass jar but don't forget to cover it loosely :)
Ok is this a reupload or am I crazy??
Gosh you're stunning 😍
Why did you delete this video and repost it? I know I watched this last week
Thank you! I thought I was having deja-vu.
Thats so weird cause I didn't see this video posted last week. I wonder why it didn't show in my feed? I blame UA-cam 😑
HIII!! I LOVE YOU!! THANK YOU!! 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
DEJA VU?
I keep all my nuts, seeds and flour in the freezer
? re-upload, or am i tripping?
i wrap the ends of bananas in tin foil..
I don’t trust anyone that uses the word “cash flow”
For fresh blackberries, simply grow them in the backyard. Store-bought stuff is just bland in comparison. Nothing beats straight off the tree.
soo much unintentional asmr 👻. if you don't already have a separate channel for it, you totally should...
