    In this video I show you how to add a brass inlay but you can keep it simple if you want and just leave it wood. I made a Tri-Force from the Legend of Zelda because it is fairly easy. There are two ways to add the brass. Solid sheets or brass powder. The solid brass I used is .016” thick. (see link below) You can go thicker even up to .026” or more, but I would not go much thinner thank .016". The brass powder way is not as shiny but I encourage you to try both ways for the experience. You can add other designs or shapes, even small stones can be attached. I hope you get a chance to make a wood ring because it really is fun.

    Thanks for the good instructions! I just finished a Harry Potter-themed ring with the engraving "ALWAYS" as a Christmas gift for my best friend :) Half an inch is way too thick, though! Had to sand it down a lot. I hope my friend likes it, I think self made gifts are awesome, and even better if they look good.

      The original cyanoacrylates (the chemical name for the glue) were discovered in 1942 in a search for materials to make clear plastic gun sights for the war, and scientists stumbled upon a formulation that stuck to everything that it came in contact with. However, cyanoacrylates were quickly rejected by American researchers precisely because they stuck to everything! In 1951, cyanoacrylates were rediscovered by Eastman Kodak researchers Harry Coover and Fred Joyner, who recognized its true commercial potential, and it was first sold as a commercial product in 1958.

    If you want to improve bending process, i would soak the veneer in ammonia hydroxide rather than hot water. Its a little nastier (safety wise) but the wood won't kink and once dry, it will 'set' in the new shape rather than slightly springing back.
    Also a ring mandrel is like £7...

      @Thrillbo341 8 років тому

    • @HappyAtom

      +Stephen Bathory I will have to try that some time. Thanks for the suggestion. The superglue makes the wood waterproof and rock solid.

    • @ZombieAlchemist
      @ZombieAlchemist 8 років тому +21

      +Colin John Cunningham Way to make what could have been a helpful comment sound pretentious as all hell. Not sure if you meant it that way but you come off as more of a snob who like to throw big words around not a professional. Also next time you leave a comment like that, there's really no need to tell someone that you didn't like the project first like he was looking for that validation before you add your two cents.

    • @CoolKoon
      @CoolKoon 8 років тому +3

      +Stephen Bathory I definitely wouldn't use wood glue, because not only it isn't waterproof (by far!), but all the stuff emitted by the human skin would make it fall apart in no time. I'm assuming that the maker of the rings would want his rings to be wearable....

    • @ryanh4136
      @ryanh4136 8 років тому

      +ZombieAlchemist As a fellow but mere amateur woodworker, I also didn't
      care for the obviously amateurish nature of the video (the figure/chatoyance(the optical waviness in the wood is called "curl" and NOT made based on how it's cut as the ignorant video states, but an uncommon way the wood grows). Also, bent wood lamination can be done using water for soaking and also with PVA glue, but also as corrected, other fluids and adhesives are much more suited o this particular project since it's a very tight wind as well as needing to be waterproof, which obviously this amateur that only saw
      someone do something cool and wanted to make a buck off putting this up would not know - a disservice to the watchers as well as the true pros that put other more informative and correct videos up on the topic. I'm NOT a pro woodworker as stated, but a decent amateur who appreciates Colin for saying he's a Pro since it differentiates himself from the video author as someone who actually knows what he's talking about, as opposed to simply being pretentious!
      Thanks anyway HappyAtom for sparking people's creativity and possibly getting people into the craft, a rewarding and useful hobby. I'd just do a little more research first so as not to mislead your viewers or sound too much like you have no idea what you're doing to anyone with just a little knowledge about the subject.
      Additionally, if the springback isn't as much of an issue, you could still use Tightbond III since it is waterproof. After which, a finish will protect it better from acids and moisture from fingers (varnish is most suitable or a oil/varnish like Watco Danish Oil, which can be re-applied as it wears) .

    That detail on some of the wood (The lines going the other direction to the grain) Is called figuring, It is a natural feature of some trees which happens because of abnormal growth in the tree. Basically it doesn't grow straight up but wiggles up. This kind of wood is much harder to work with because of the irregular grain but is very pretty and used quite often on musical instruments like violins and guitars. Furniture makers use it a lot as well.

    Hey, you could use tape to position the triangles when marking the veneer, also, once the veneer is cut in depth, you coudl position the triangles and use tape again to hold the position. then, when you put superglue, you would not glue your fingers by presing on tape instead of triangles. Cheers

    Cool project. A tip I would like to suggest would be to wrap and rubber band your wet veneer right onto socket with the extension and leave it on there until after the gluing, inlaying, gluing and final sanding of the outer part of the ring before removing it from the socket to finish the edges and inside of the ring. If you can mount the extension/socket to a drill or lathe, you can speed up the finishing processes and eliminate most of the physical contact with the CA glue.

      Penetrating doesn't mean it penetrates brass and gluing it before setting the brass makes sure they're glued on the back as well instead of just the sides.

      You can also make your own veneer with a bandsaw. There are videos on UA-cam to help you out with that.

    A sharpening stone would come in handy for your exacto blades.
    Also, you could use clear fingernail polish for a clear coat to protect it.
    Nice project. Thank you for sharing.

    You could easily apply any suitable water based wood dye, to achieve any desired color (purple, pink, red, blue, green, yellow, orange, black, etc., etc.! Perhaps buy slabs used for making knife handles, (made from a wide variety of materials)!

    Just started making rings and small carvings. Been using what I've been told is sapili (sic?), just got some oak from my dad. Made a ' Ying Yang' two piece ring. Love making 'fiddly' stuff.

  • @Phoquounet
    @Phoquounet 7 років тому

    I suggest a idea for gluing the laiton tri-force, when you placed it first (before gluing), you can place a tape on, and the three piece will be on the tape and you'll be able to replace on the holes with the superglue

    Very cool video. Another option for filling in any open spaces would be to use 5 minute epoxy and masking tape. It's a trick I use to fix gauges in gun stocks, but it would work for this with whatever powder/metal you want to mix with the epoxy. Lots of color options when you go to pigments. I've made coin rings before, but it looks like this will be my next project

  • @FirstMiddleLast123

    Some quick tips: You can buy different shaped hole punches (or even have them made) Just punch the hole near the end of the strip that will be on the outside and use the same punch to punch out your filler metal from a foil that is about the same thickness as the wood and you get a perfect fit. The socket and tape was a nice idea, but it would be easier if you put the tape on inside out. Then you can just use your socket extension in a drill to do the sanding.

    thanks for the vid. fyi, the 'suede or microfiber' light changes that you see when tilting the wood is called chayotance. You can also soften wood in several ways. One way is to used Downy fabric softener in hot water (it's stinky, though). Also, a wax-pencil made for picking up glass beads might be useful for picking up the brass inlays.

    interesting way to make a few sideline bucks - Just hope that your demand doesn't overwhelm - which could be a good thing I suppose... The second way you made the ring with the metal dust looks to be much faster and easier (especially on the fingers!)

    Acetone works great for getting the CA glue off your hands. It dissolves dried CA.
    Thanks for the great vid. Really cool stuff.
    Also, check out Milliput. Great stuff for working inlays. Metal powders work in real well with that putty before pushing it into the inlay. Milliput comes in colors.

    the wood that you can see the figure (where you say the light changes) is maple, which comes in a number of different figures. the purple wood you mention is called purple heart. Another wood that you might find interesting is rainbow eucalyptus.
