Disabled veteran here with PTSD and have taken this up to keep my mind busy thank you for clear instructions slowly getting better making these rings please keep the videos and instructions coming thank you again I have talked with people at Batavia PTSD center in NY and have a few veteran doing these thank you again you help more than you know
thanks for the update, every time i posted pictures of rings i made using your method i get so much praise, so i send them back here, thanks for being such an inspiration.
I made mine from cherry wood. I soaked my strip of cherry in hot water for half an hour, drained it and wiped most of the water away with a towel, then wrapped it around a socket that was the same diameter (slightly smaller to allow for sanding). After it dried for two days I used c.a. glue to saturate the wood. Sanding and sizing after the glue dried was easy and the ring turned out beautifully.
I just started 6 blanks today, waiting until tomorrow for them to dry before I glue them up. I wish i had seen your tip about drying them on a light or monitor earlier, but it's too late at night now to bother. Hopefully the glue I bought works well. I have a few ideas for inlays but I'm just going to do a couple basic ones first.
you was my inspiration on that kind of rings. i made about 10 oak rings and now have an idea and making smart rings with NFC chips in rings that works with smartfones. Chips works very good.
I just found your channel and love how you make your rings. I work in my Universities wood shop and have been looking for a project that could make use of the scrap wood laying around so I cut some mm thick pieces of veneer on the table saw and will be attempting my first ring later today! Thanks for a great tutorial video!
I was able to use ebony. What I did was use a big pot to boil on the stove for 20 minutes and then I stepped it down to wrapping inside a big cup with the polling water in. I stepped down again into a smaller cup also with boiling water before going down to wrapping around a socket to dry. Total soak time was 2 hours. No cracking at all.
Have you ever considered making "paper rings", out of fancy kinds of Japanese, (etc.) handmade, calligraphy papers, or just put a layer of paper between layers of wood?! (...It's Just a thought!) Keep up the AWESOME videos/tutorials!!!
Yeah I think that about EVERYTHING! Oh I could make that- yeah I COULD! (But WILL I?) Based on history, not so much. Like lawn work, cutting my own hair, writing a blog, suing someone, etc. But you go right ahead. Send pictures!
PRE-CUT & PRE-GLUED VENEER EDGE STRIPS FROM LOWES: (the ones that are sold by the coil). 1- I sanded the glue off. works just fine. 2- I left the glue on, stuck inside oven for a bit of time to let the glue bond. Works just fine, but CONSIDERABLY thicker.
I'm just getting into working with this building method for rings, but I have worked on acoustic guitars quite a bit, so I'd hazard a guess that most woods that are suitable for lutherie would definitely be suitable for this kind of woodwork. Hardwoods like myrtle (from my home state!) have a tight, interlocking grain, but are still largely very workable. Maple, ash and several others aren't extremely taxing either. Anyone that wanted more tips on woods they could use may want to check on some guitar builders' sites.
Hi there! iam Jose from Sweden, a new subscriber on your channel. I haven't made wood ring yet but I like to make one soon and make a wood ring video to my YT channel. I hope I can find all you showed here in the store in Sweden all I need to make one. Thanks for sharing and keep on doing awesome videos like this one :)
Here are a couple tips for you to try next time HappyAtom As a woodworker I worked many times with veneer and to prevent your craking and trouble with veneer warping, use some veneer stabiliser first on it to flatten it and then instead of soaking it in water try steaming it over boiling water. It works best and will do wonders compared to your method. Let me know when you try it
Hi I would like to say thanks for you have been share your amazing work. I cannot work and for pass my time I like to tried make things, but I didn`t have to much success yet I have been work with Resin, clay and furniture, but now I like to tried make a rings, I have been learn with your videos thanks for that, but I don`t know where I can buy the rings for after decorate, if you can give me that information it will help me to do something. Thanksgiving, Paula UK
You're on fire man. I saw your boomerang vids referenced on Imgur and FB. When you make it big, don't forget us little guys. ;) Anyway, well deserved success.
Great video super informative. I have just started trying to make these types of rings. I saw one video where a guy boiled the wood to help it wrap. You microwave, do you think that makes a difference? How long do you microwave for? Thanks again for the video I look forward to seeing more. Jscott
I must say, I find it funny that the labels and country origins of the wood you have listed some of them say USA/Canada others just say USA... Maple says USA yet its OUR MAIN TREE IN CANADA, its the leaf on the flag. Just my 2 cents.
Hi Happy Atom! Your bent veneer rings videos made me super interested in making one or two by myself :D I had some trouble with solid rings in use (they cracked) and I need to remake one for my boyfriend, so this way may be very helpful. I have a walnut veneer and I'm really happy that it's a perfect one to work with. I just hope such rings are less fragile than those made of solid wood... Good luck on your work and thanks for sharing your experience! Thumbs up ;-)
Love your videos. Just started doing bent wood rings. I’ve got about twelve under my belt thus far. I purchased a variety pack of exotic and domestic veneers from Sauers and love them. However, my pack did not include some purpleheart and padauk. I purchased both recently and am awaiting delivery. I was wondering if you attempted to turn either of those woods and, if so, what is your opinion on how easy or hard they are to turn?
Brilliant video made my 1st ring using your method & it turned out better than i expected & i have limited craft knowhow, I did buy a random pack of veneers, can anyone point to a good guide to identify woods? thanks
As I mentioned for the preceding video, try putting Downy fabric softener in the water to make the wood softer to bend. The softener won't effect gluing or appearance, and the stink will die down eventually.
Well astonishingly gorgeous - each single one there and generous details . Now since I'm really addicted to wood but - here I migrated in Central America - the real beauties are hard as stones (ain't they always..) - any special tips when messing with hardwoods ? Some of them won't even accept sanding - or precious beauty ... gone an hard to get back.. Ain't got any experience with such small items - but my new woodworking playground and workroom - still under construction for another week - blame it on rain season - is equipped to the job - though with larger scale in mind.. so ... how should I proceed with hardwoods ? any luck with those difficult to impossible - to work with ( and specifically bend ) hardwoods ? many are a challenge if not a broken ego safe way to try bend ...
Great video.. I am in the process of making my wife a ring.(she doesn't know) to renew our vows. I'm using exotic hard wood and bone. While sanding the wood and bone are starting to separate. Should try to reglue it? Or start over? I
I love these rings and I'm certainly will try to make one. Just tell me... how is it that your fingers aren't totally damaged from the glue? Some years ago I used nail-glue which is kinda like super glue and I had to file the skin on my fingers because the glue don't wanted to get off...
Thanks for such a good video! I still have trouble with most of my veneers just cracking and crumbling. Im going to try boiling for longer (ive been boiling for over an hour rhe still seem very stiff). Any other things I could try? How long would ypu microwave in water for?
Informative, just subscribed. Question about working with veneer cuts & grain. Have you noticed differences, with trying to bend a veneer strip cut cross-grain versus one cut along the fibers? Unless it was essential for aesthetics, i'd assume it wise to stay away from bending cross-grain, but i've not worked with the laminate construction you teach.
How about soaking the wood in a warm, light mixture of glycerine, and water, (about 1 oz. Glycerine/1 pt. H2O...?), then, pressing the veneers between layers of blotting paper, and MDF, until they're relatively dry. I don't know if the glycerine might effect the ability to glue up the wood, but, it is recommended in some videos, on veneering. Also: What about slicing the veneers across the grain, and wrapping those strips, so as to utilize the flexibility of the woods across their grain?!...
Thank you for the in depth video! I want to make a wedding ring for my fiancée. We have worn matching string "rings". Would it be possible to inlay that string into a bentwood ring? Do you have any suggestions on how I would go about that?
you mention that the red oak was easier than the white... my hunch on that is the cell size on the red is larger, meaning the water (and glue) permeates the wood much better
I recently started making bentwood rings and my mom and i both fell in love with the purpleheart wood, both in veneer form and block form. However, I cannot get the purpleheart to bend to save my life, and when i try to do any kind of softening (I have literally tried everything) it either turned black from the heat or gray from the liquids pulling out the color. I dont mind doing it by block but i love the simplicity of the bentwood process. Do you have any recommendations for what to do as far as bending purpleheart? I have tried boiling, microwaving, steaming, cold water soaking, and veneer softener as well as dry heating (totaly burned it the first time).
Hi, I am following you closely and I am very happy with your hand gestures. I want to have an experience with me. I would like to do it with their own elimination at least in the least. I can not buy this wood identification kit only.
Have you ever tried to make a ring using two different kind of woods to make a ring? I was wondering how you would go about doing that. Thanks for the videos
When you make the ring do you find that sometimes they are too think to fit comfortably between your fingers? I tried making a ring and found myself sanding the outside down to only being 2 wraps thick in order for them to be comfortable for continuous wear.
I love your video, I have a quick question I am trying to make a wine Decanter, any idea isn't right to make like a mold and just bend the wood on top of the mold or how like what's the best way from your point of view thanks in advance joey
Does the super glue hold up well after being exposed to water? I made a ring the other day with deer antler and wood, I used a two part epoxy to bond them together but after washing my hands all day it separated on one side, do you think wood glue or super glue is the best option? Also it wasn’t veneer I cut the wood and antler, sanded them and epoxied them together them drilled the hole and sanded and blah blah blah but the epoxy didn’t hold.
I noticed that some of the color bleeds during the water boiling process. Did you notice this? Any suggestions? I have a sheet of veneer with a beautiful dark brown and tan streak down the side and want to preserve the color.
Thanks for your awsome videos. at 8:19 I can see a different glue: Titebond Medium. Can this be used the same as your other glue? (first is available here - second isn't) Is the Medium (Titebond) better than the Thin one? Do you (anyone) have experience with ebony or red fig? Couldn't find them in the doc.
Disabled veteran here with PTSD and have taken this up to keep my mind busy thank you for clear instructions slowly getting better making these rings please keep the videos and instructions coming thank you again I have talked with people at Batavia PTSD center in NY and have a few veteran doing these thank you again you help more than you know
Thanks for giving a idea about all that wood sort for the rings. Have a great week
thanks for the update, every time i posted pictures of rings i made using your method i get so much praise, so i send them back here, thanks for being such an inspiration.
You can basically even make a bracelet with this technique!!! Thank you so much HappyAtom for making the ring videos!!!
Thanks for another great video and the links are wonderful. Your general positive and humble demeanor really adds to the videos as well!
Thanks man!
MrActiveDown f
Thank you for the time you spent on creating this video. Really informative...
Wow! Thank you for the thorough and systematic sampling of different veneers. Extremely helpful :)!

You went to so much effort to do this experiment for us! Very interesting, thank you for the quality content :^)
thank you i found this very helpful. Can't wait to work on some rings
You are incredible Adam, keep it up!
I can’t wait to start

Where are the pdf files. Cannot seem to find them. Big thumbs up. Keep bringing out such fantastic vids.

I love all the ads at the bottom of this video are for $100+ rings, and you just taught us how to make one for less than $10.
Yeah I think that about EVERYTHING! Oh I could make that- yeah I COULD! (But WILL I?) Based on history, not so much. Like lawn work, cutting my own hair, writing a blog, suing someone, etc. But you go right ahead. Send pictures!
PRE-CUT & PRE-GLUED VENEER EDGE STRIPS FROM LOWES:

1- I sanded the glue off. works just fine.
2- I left the glue on, stuck inside oven for a bit of time to let the glue bond. Works just fine, but CONSIDERABLY thicker.
I'm also really happy that it worked. Thank you for the video!
Never though to try that... I have a huge roll of that rn
Unimportant Gaming Videos did you still boil it or did it bend fine without that step?
Dude awesome video and thanks for the spreadsheet, I friggin love spreadsheets lol.
Brilliant! I'm crazy about those! Really want to make some!

Perhaps you might try making "cuff" bracelets, , etc., especially with the woods that are more difficult to roll tightly.
Here are a couple tips for you to try next time HappyAtom

1:55 so satisfying
great videos. now I know what to make my wife for her birthday.
Hey! Thanks for answering my questions! I can't wait to give it a shot! Really want to try using the laser engraver but thats costs money lol!
You're on fire man. I saw your boomerang vids referenced on Imgur and FB. When you make it big, don't forget us little guys. ;) Anyway, well deserved success.
Thank you so much! I really needed this!
Impressed with the video
Which is the strongest ring? Thanks for the video

Cool, I just watched the first video the other day.
Thanks for the video. Obviously a lot of work was involved making it. When did you start making these types of rings and what is your background?
You would probably be my favorite youtuber if you posted you are definitely up their though nice vid 👍
I must say, I find it funny that the labels and country origins of the wood you have listed some of them say USA/Canada others just say USA... Maple says USA yet its OUR MAIN TREE IN CANADA, its the leaf on the flag. Just my 2 cents.

great video! how long does it usually take to dry? and does it make a difference if you glue while you curl?
Dear friend, thanks for your information. Do you think that i can use black ebony (gabon) for rings or bracelet using veneer? Thanks
The first video was great, but this is really everything I could wish for, so I dont have to test myself. You are fucking great!
Thank you for the in depth video! I want to make a wedding ring for my fiancée. We have worn matching string "rings". Would it be possible to inlay that string into a bentwood ring? Do you have any suggestions on how I would go about that?

Hi I'm just starting out and the 'which veneer' is excellent resource, but I have been denied access to the printouts can I still get them and how?
Not sure if I missed it or not, what size socket do you use? Different sizes for different sized ring blanks?
I have found that bocote and snakewood have worked best for me.
I recently started making bentwood rings and my mom and i both fell in love with the purpleheart wood, both in veneer form and block form. Hello, I'm curious if you ever found a solution to working with Purpleheart wood?
Have you ever tried using any of the modern woodworking aniline dyes, to color tint some of the more bland veneers, to "spiff them up a bit"?!....
Do you know how far the glue Penetrates the wood thinking about dying some of the lighter wood fun colors
50,000 Subs!! Congratz! ^_^
É um trabalho perfeito parabéns.
Is this glue the best for making rings ?
Hi, I am following you closely and I am very happy with your hand gestures. I want to have an experience with me. I would like to do it with their own elimination at least in the least. I can not buy this wood identification kit only.
Thank you so much!
Do you know any place the sells specifically Acajou mahogany veneer? I been looking but I can't seem to find any
Are there any other suitable types of glue which will be available in the UK?
I like to use ash and American walnut
enjoyed your video.
Have you ever tried to make a ring using two different kind of woods to make a ring? I was wondering how you would go about doing that.
Thanks for the videos
I plan on doing that in a future video. It's not hard to do. There are others that have videos on it.
I'm surprised you didn't go more into the heating and time. How much water
Wood Gem-rings would be one of the better names I think.
Trying to locate your pdf for the bent rings, or previous video, Thanks
Go
Hi. How do you get rid of the blackness left buy glue when your sanding?
A link to the package of veneer you showed, please? In a small town we need a bit more info to find products on line. Thanks.
When you make the ring do you find that sometimes they are too think to fit comfortably between your fingers? I tried making a ring and found myself sanding the outside down to only being 2 wraps thick in order for them to be comfortable for continuous wear.

How long do you sock the wood for my ring keep slitting i have left in hot water for one hour i got the same veneer sheets as you thanks adrian

what was the tool at the beginning?
How long do you reckon the rolled up veneers dry after being soaked in warm water?
really liked it
Watch size socket do you use
What's the song playing staring at 1:50? I love it!
I used white oak, boiled it for 30 min, bent the wood, but never could get the sides to blend when sanding.
