Hola amigo!!! I want to comment, but I'm so excited that I don't know where to start. Congratulations, you are a great artist working with wood. Your expertise is evident, but also your love for wood. This one is the longest video I've seen in UA-cam but it was like instants watching the way you worked to make this beaitifiu piece of art. I bet there is a good story about how you learned to make ocarinas. I really apreciate you showing the whole process to make it, and I'm sure that a lot of people are going to make their own. I wil try to make mine, though I don't know if it's going to be as good Thanks again.
So long video but my heart, my eyes and my ears are keenly attached to the video and you made a wonderful diamond piece of musical instrument. Thank you for your hard work. Thank you so much. From Dagudu Nagesh, India.
Great! I would be concerned that the oil finish would affect the shape of the fipple and change or even stop the playability. I have made a few Native American style flutes and this is always my concern
Perfect, I will try to make one. I learned from my dad 70 years ago to make simple reed ot bamboo whistles, this will be fun to do. Thank you so very much.👍😏
For new carvers who may be afraid to carve the sound channel too deep, I suggest you carve it into the fipple (the top part added to the flute to help make sound). That way, if you make your channel too deep, you can easily start again with a new piece, instead of having to start all over again. The edge he is carving to split the air is 45 degrees (usually):) Have fun!:)
Sempre. 😉
A beautiful instrument and another left-handed genius. Did you write the title for this video...I only ask as I am left-handed as well and one of the most common typing mistakes I make is typing FORM instaed of FROM?
I love the accuracy of the measurements for the locations of the finger holes.. I wonder if it would tune differently if a lady with thin fingers did that or a man with thick fingers did it?? I guess standard measurements would be very helpful.. Even the sizes of the holes themselves. I've probably got a dozen plastic "recorders" that elementary school kids learn to play. I pick them up at yard sales all the time for next to nothing.. I keep a few in a cigar box out on my front porch and play them late at night when I'm sitting out there smoking a cigar with my dog(s)... ... Umm, OK, before the animal rights folks jump on here.. I DO NOT let my dogs smoke cigars.. DO you even realize how much cigars cost these days?? As for this project, I love all the sanding he's doing but... I've got a huge shopsmith out in my shop that cries whenever I walk by because I don't use it enough.. This would be a great project to start back into using it. I've got pine trees around 3 sides of my house that are all about 100' high or more.. I've got branches that broke off during a big wind storm a couple of months back.. and I've got the tools for using on my shopsmith that'll make those sticks the correct size.. I guess I coule use my recorders as patterns and make the branches the same size along with the holes and locations of the holes..
As far as i know, the pitch depends not only on the position and size of the holes, but also on the (inside) diameter of the flute and fipple position. So easier than copying an existent flute and get all the measurements right, start with small holes and increase the diameter until the desired pitch (beginning with the lowest and ending with the highest hole, as he does here).
nice, nice, except for the knot, I'd also sharpen it, it's a real eye-catcher, the whole tool is beautifully shiny with slight unevenness, and the protruding knot looks like the tool has cancer or a wart
What Kind of wood did you use? I'm in Canada, so will have to look for similar species? Is it a type of cotton wood or spuce? What size did you use for the top hole and channel? What are the drill bit sizes for the sound holes? What size bit did you use for the main chamber hole? And what spacing did you use for the sound holes for fingering, or is that random? I am wondering, if one were to tune the holes before the tip was glued in, you can tune each hole then fine sanding the inside, so there are no wood chips to mess up the inner working of the instrument...? Just my thoughts:) I find when I make flutes no matter how hard I try there are always little bits on the inside I need to remove. It's a pain!LOL thank you! I made these from clay...potato kind, 10 holes. Tuned.:) Cheers and thanks for the extra information! I love carving...so, will try this! YOUR VIDEO IS WONDERFUL>..I 'm just thinking of ways to do a couple of steps differently for myself:) I'm not a critic at all!:)
Hele a nebylo by lepší zalepit tělo té píšťalky až nakonec, aby šel zevnitř vysypat prach a piliny? Nebo nechat tělo otevírací? Good day. Why is it called an ocarina when it's just a whistle? We just made them from willow and not from spruce. Hey, wouldn't it be better to seal the body of the whistle at the end so that it can dump dust and sawdust from the inside? Or leave the body open?
How do you figure out concert pitch so you can play with other instruments? Of course it’s the total volume of the air column as defined by the length and width of the bored hole & where one puts the finger holes; but where to start?
My only thought is, I wonder if the sound would be just a touch more full / rounded if that plug on the end had a small bowl cut out of it, so they air is rounded in the chamber.
I really admire such work...and I love this, sorry if it sounded like I did not admire it, because I really do. Just wanted to help new carvers a bit..it was very hard for me at first, and lost, so, just wanted to see if I could help a bit. Hope you were not insulted. :(
Awww, that's awesome! I so love to carve and create music as a bonus is such fun! Thanks for all your work and videos, and keep this up...we need music for healing this world:) Cheers from Canada.@@HTcko
Sir, I think by using a lathe machine you could have saved lot of time & labour for making a uniform cylinder & hollowing out the inner core in 1/10 th time. Rest detailing could have been done on that basic start.

Thank you for this. As a musician ( vocals and guitar) I loved learning something new.

I've never had an issue with my native American flutes. I do epoxy seal the bore and use an oil based varnish on the exterior.
Very nice instrument from a fallen branch. Well done!

extraordinario trabajo
felicitaciones👏👏👏
Really great job! Do you think it is possible to make 10 holes in total? 8 above and 2 below, like some types of ocarina.
One way to find out!!
the work is masterful, congratulations, but I think you made the holes on the right side and vice versa
Love the knot. It gives it authenticity. Beautiful job!
Felicitaciones, por su talento! 🌺🇨🇱

I agree ,most of my whistles are done with the channel in the lid
Love the fact you don't use any power tools apart from the drill
Lindo trabalho parabéns! 👏👏👏

Right, I wouldn't pick a wood with a knot!
Ribbed, for your pleasure. Embrace the giant protuberous wart and play that flute!!
