The purpose of this video is to try the menu, NOT to loose weight. I wouldn't never put myself on a prolonged diet from a magazine and I would never encourage you to do so either. Nutritional and medical research has come a long way since the 1950s and I would encourage anyone wanting to loose weight to consult a doctor and a nutritionist before doing so.
Ah thanks Alex. I was wondering whether I missed something or YT flagged it as spam accidentally! Nothing wrong with a good conversation. Especially as I learned something!
One thing I would add to the discussion is just how many women were on some form of mental health drugs. Many of which have reduction or complete loss of appetite while also making you feel full of energy. That, imo, is the only way one could eat like this and still do everything a housewife was expected to do with*out* passing out.
I grew up in the 1950's and saw my mother dieting almost all the time. Breakfast was usually a slice of toast topped with a soft boiled egg and a half grapefruit. Grapefruit was a dieters best friend in those days. Lunch was often salad, she used salt and pepper and made a diet salad dressing with tomato juice and a bit of oil. Another popular lunch was an "open faced sandwich," using one slice of toast, lunch meat or tuna, topped with a big leaf of lettuce.
Yes, the diets in those days were pretty restrictive. But salt, pepper and other spices would have been allowed on the diet. They have no calories. My mother tried to get to lose weight in the 60's, even though I was under 10yo. So I experienced some of the horrors of the diet.
I loved this, I do find myself wondering how everyday diet has changed since the mid century meals around the table. I’m obsessed with all things 50’s so thank you for this!
Hi miss Bee! I wanted to thank you for your vintage hairstyles videos. I have just set my whole head in standing pin curls using your tutorial. I was very insecure about trying it, and wasn't very confident about the directions of each curl. I missed a few thin strands between the curls and definitely hoped and prayed for the best in the back. But when I took the pins out, brushed and teased everything, it turned out as if I almost knew what I was doing! What a surprising experience!
I get confused with the 50’s. I see ads from that time where they specifically tell you to gain more weight and be more curvy and pretty, but then there’s also dieting 😅
Very enjoyable video!! The only changes I’d make is…a little Vodka in the tomato juice, some Kahula in the milk and some good old Southern Comfort in the tea 😉🙃😉
Absolutely! I would never put my body on a prolonged diet from a magazine and I wouldn’t recommend anyone else does either! I just wanted to try the food, not see if I lost weight. I think that would be an extremely irresponsible video with very much the wrong message.
@@MissBeeTownsend Well..in America..dinnertime is closer to 6 pm. This eating plan is healthy .varied and balanced. After about the third day you would find that your pallette would cleanse and your inability to go more than a couple of hours without food would diminish. After about a week you would find the effects refreshing. Using it as a weight loss plan wouldn't be a good idea because the only real weight you would lose is water..which you would gain back quickly. About a week of this kind of thing would reset your body and leave positive health benefits..but .unless you're just trying to drop enough to fit into a dress for a special occasion.I wouldn't go with this for more than a week..then trade over. . But.. there's nothing wrong with it. It's a good short term plan.
@@ConstantCompanion Thanks for sharing that information then! I'd love to know if you have looked into the more general 1950s diet and what you think of it. Or if you have any sensible vintage diet recommendations that you'd like to see as a video? :)
One has to remember that it had only been 5 years after the biggest war the world has ever seen ended. UK, for example ended rationing only at 1954. Food was already restricted back then but still consisted the baseline nutritional needs. To lose weight back then would also mean sacrificing nutritional needs. This type of eating really only ended at the early 60s.
Switch to V-8. It's a delicious blend of eight nutritious vegetable juices. Add "chili juice," lemon juice, "soy juice," (aka worchestershire), and most importantly, "potato juice" (preferably Absolut potato juice). It's a meal in itself.
This was definitely a bit grim! Not drastically restrictive or unbalanced though, could have been worse. Considering how many "health nuts" still eat grilled chicken, steamed broccoli, and brown rice for almost every meal nowadays I can't really say we've come very far (if at all!) on this front 😅🥲🥦
Yeah agreed. Unfortunately magazines still encourage dieting and publish extremely irresponsible diet info. I felt the menu was pretty unbalanced nutritionally. There were no grains at all for lunch and dinner and the protein portions were super low. Then they randomly allowed you to eat bacon and a teaspoon of butter but no salad dressing 🤷🏻♀️ They also recommended you don’t eat spices…like why????
That was my thoughts but a nutritionist in the comments said it wasn't too bad...which is why I didn't want to give diet advice in the video because I'm clearly no expert 😂

@UCLcLc9PcNVetnG6xHNrwDWA I didn’t. At least not intentionally.
@UCLcLc9PcNVetnG6xHNrwDWA It's still there, she just made this its own pinned comment.

I wish! Haha

Yeah I'd like to do more about the everyday diet. I would be willing to eat an everyday 1950s meal plan for a week.

Oh I’m so happy for you that it turned out! Keep practicing. You’ll be setting your hair in front of the telly in no time 😉
@@MissBeeTownsend There is not. A single. Stylist. In my city. Who knows how to do it. 😉
Same. I’m scared to get my haircut in Dijon haha!
Love this video. Yes, please do more lifestyle videos-they are living history and so informative and entertaining.
This is so fun i love these type of videos, especially to see what they ate and if it was tasty or not
Yes please to more videos like this. It's interesting to see how things were in all aspects of vintage life :-)
Yes! Please do more 1950's related videos 😄✨💖
I get confused with the 50’s. I see ads from that time where they specifically tell you to gain more weight and be more curvy and pretty, but then there’s also dieting 😅
Yes I think it’s basically the same as today…money-driven nonsense to sell you things you don’t need!
Very enjoyable video!! The only changes I’d make is…a little Vodka in the tomato juice, some Kahula in the milk and some good old Southern Comfort in the tea 😉🙃😉
Hahahaha I will admit I have used the left over tomato juice to make a Bloody Mary 😂
And just to be authentic, consume whilst pregnant. Dont forget a ciggie . 😄
I love your red lipstick....what is the brand and shade??
Could you please share the lipstick colour your wearing. Thank you
Billie Burke wrote 2 bks & her 2nd bk had some waay ahead of its time diet & exercise tips
There’s some odd weight loss diets from back then! How was the clear soup?
Why is bacon ok but not dressing for the salad? 😂 Anyways, this was fun to watch! 😊
EXACTLY!
That share of lipstick looks lovely on you!
Love the old fashioned video ❤❤😊
I love all of your videos!😍
Did it work, this is the big question?
I only did it for one day.
Ppl dined out like 4 times a year, not 4 times a day 😂
Also families ate 3 large meals a day. Mostly comfort food and they're idea of a salad was jello made with celery, olives and pieces of meat.
Nice I love the 50s 👍 👍
Love it. Can you make. Video how how they are in the great depression.
Hello, what's the red lipstick you're wearing ? It's stunning.
Люблю 50е - 60е годы 😍😍😍
breakfast for a lot of people in 1950s depended on what class you were for a lot of kids it was bread and dripping if you were lucky
Hello 🧡 miss 💜bee ♥️ !!
Vous êtes absolument ravissante 🥰 !
these are some of my favorite videos! thanks for sharing
Dessert = Valium
The dinner’s appetizer & dessert seem so backwards
Yes I loved it I need more
I think if they would have how chia seed they maybe be able to make it till dinner but wow talk about restrictions. 😅
You look so great wearing a scarf
Just one day?

Tomato juice sounds kinda gross. Is it?
I’m a fan Bloody Mary’s so I didn’t mind it!
I love tomato juice i drink it plain all the time

God bless!! 😂🙏🏼
This just confirms my decision to be fat, rather than depressed! ☺️
Yeah I'm willing to do exercise but I last about 15 mins on a diet haha. Life is too short!
Don't eat salad with no dressing. That's dumb.
too little protein at lunch, no wonder you were hungry
Milk???? Nooooooo poison

Yeah, bland food, no thanks.
Damn she's fine
They didn't eat salads in the 1950s for lunch.
Really? What did they do with them?
