You just saved me $150. I bought a bait caster today and used your video step by step and I haven’t gotten a backlash more than a foot. I was going to return it if I couldn’t use it 😅
Nice advice! I've watched many vids on this subject but this is the first one that mentions the motion being a smooth arc rather than having a sharp beginning and end. I'm a casting reel newbie so I'm looking forward to trying this technique out!

Went fishing a few days ago with my first bait caster. Took quite some time to figure that thing out and with a video or 2 on the settings. Kept geting bird nests, got the hang of it kinda, had one guy help me on what to do with my thumb and quickly learned to do a nice cast. Still not perfect, but it makes me happy when that same stranger praised me for making good casts for a first time user. I feel like a kid with proud parents lol.
Just wanna day thanks for your videos. I just bought a bait caster and had no idea what I was doing. First try I think I was untangling the line more than fishing. First time fisher here. Didnt know what I was buying and ended up with the baitcaster (i was relying on a friends suggestion since they fished before). Anyway, trying side casting and then overcasting, I can firsthand say, over was the worst idea I had and the bird nesting I always heard about hit hard lol. After watching this video, I did the lure drop to floor test and tweaked the brake and tensioner and cant wait to SIDE cast again tomorrow for some hopeful longer distance casting! Had my baitcaster about two weeks now and it’s much easier than I thought it would be. Took me an hour of practicing to get comfortable. I don’t even bring my spinningrod anymore unless I’m fishing in sea for longer casts
Thanks for this video. I gave up on my baitcasters but now with your simple basic instructions, I can now cast effectively without backlash or bird nesting. Appreciate it!
I bought a baitcaster combo from a local Salvation Army store for $5 and as you can imgine, found myself in many a bird's nest. I suspect the reason it was "donated" is because it's previous owner had not watched one of your videos. I lost a lot of the braid line that was on there before trying some fresh mono that I had lying around, only to find out the mono did it too. Now the thing is OLD but the spool seemed to spin more than freely. I'll try the tension knob next. Thanks for the huge help, at least now I will be able to see if my $5 entry into the baitcasting world was worth it
Thanks so much. Started using my baitcaster again for first time in a couple of years. Was getting backlashes all day. Thanks for the reminder on adjusting the tension knob when changing out lures. Will try it again soon :)
Thank you so much. I got an older bait caster casted. My first cast destroyed all my string. It had to be cut out and I found this video and it saved my life. Now I know how to cast awsomely😎
I've tried for the past three hours to use the baitcaster. I thought maybe I was putting too much string on it or I'm not stopping it fast enough with the handle, but maaaannnn do I feel stupid after watching this video. Thanks for the upload and good detail, you just helped me tremendously! Thumbs up.
Thank you so much this was very helpful! This is my first time using a baitcaster and I’ve had a little bit of trouble but this video really helped me clear things up
Awesome! I’m a minor so I don’t make a lot of cash so I wanted to make sure that I would be able to use one before I spent a chunk of my money on one, now I am confident that I can use one thanks to you!
Now this is a tutorial. Got me from swearing everytime I cast to "Hell Yeah" when it lands right by the log. Will never go back to spin cast. Thank you.
@Michael Antonio I find that they are. You have way more say in line tension and the accuracy is finer. However, it is a learning curve. I spent an hour at the shore just casting and getting used to not spooling up the line.
Thanks a lot dear, I have two baitcaster reels at house but after trying several times I stopped using those. I always made birds nest! But after watching your video I feel inspired to give a try again and I am feeling confident that this time I can make it work... Thanks again!!!
Excellent tutorial for baitcasting noobs! My only problem is the severe arthritis in my hands. Makes feathering the spool with my thumb quite difficult. I'm not giving up, but I may have to stick with my open face reel.
Thanks for this tutorial. I bought a bait caster years ago and grew frustrated with it and it’s been sitting ever since. I’m gonna watch your other video on the fine tuning and bird nest removal
Great video. Thanks. I bought a baitcaster about 10 years ago, made one cast and got a birds nest bigger than my head. I put the reel back in the box and took it back the next day. I finally got the nerve to give it another shot. Your video helped a great deal. Thanks again.
I bought my first ever baitcaster over the weekend. At first I was a little intimidated by a baitcaster but this video helped alot and was the reason I bought one! I practiced casting it today in my backyard, I could not stop casting it! Baitcasters are really fun to cast even if its just in the backyard with a sinker.
That’s how I learned to use them ..in the yard with a sinker on the line..a lot of birdnest lol but I finally got it!!!! They’re all I would use now. Thumb control is the key.
Jonathan Gatica baitcaster over spinning reel because you have so much more control over your cast and your lure. You can use any kind of lure with them, and the lure seems to move better in my opinion. Overall the baitcaster is lighter, smoother, and much more fun to use when you master the technique!!!
This will be very helpful. Always had a spinning reel. Parents bought me a new pole for my birthday and they didn't realize they gave me a baitcaster. I figured that was a sign I gotta learn to use one
Just got gifted a brand new bait caster and was wonderin why I kept getting that backspin…this video was very helpful and I definitely will be referring back to it when I go to practice casting!!!
Bill Dance method of simple backlash correction: Immediately after backlash, without picking at the line and especially without PULLING ON THE LINE, simply tighten the drag ALL THE WAY DOWN, press hard on the backlashed spool with your left thumb, all while turning the reel handle two or three turns. You want to press as hard as you can and still turn the handle. Next, release spool button and pull out tag line SLOWLY. Usually, two or three turns does the job, although it may take several depending on how bad it is. Try to avoid picking at the loops on the spool. This works 99 percent of the time. Your welcome. (Dont forget to reset the drag!)
Just took up the sport again and been afariad if this reel because of the nest. Well, I guess its time to man up and go back to school. Bought my first baitcaster and watching to learn the proper technique. Your short video is very informative on casting and controlling the reel. Good job, thank you👍
Try turning your reel and rod a little sideways, for a right hand caddy your spool should face a little forward your left shoulder try that it's always worked for me
I’ve always wanted to get into baitcasting but have been discouraged by what others have said. But I jut picked out my first baircasting rod/reel and this video answered more questions than I had
I've only ever used spinning reels, and had a question. I heard you say to stop it before it hits the water, what does that mean? I want to know as much as I can before trying one out 😊
Never had a baitcaster cause honestly I always feared the bird's nest, and my spinning rigs worked fine for the crappie and bream fishing I mostly do. Buuutttt, I found an AllStar rod with a Shimano Chronarch MG50 in a bunch of rods set out on the curb on trash day, and now I want to learn. Your video is much appreciated.
Just bought an Ugly Stik baitcaster a little by accident cause I’m not very educated in the fishing department and was going to return it but may give a try. Thanks for the tutorial!
thank you man my grandpa passed away last march, his wife gave me all his poles i love fishing i love fly fishing but i want to go bass fishin and bait caster is the way to go with that and i have one from my grandpa so thank you man 🤘🏽
i just turned my brakes and tension all the way down and tried casting as far as a could and it hit a tree, stopped my lure, and i spent 15 minutes getting out one of my worst backlashes ever
Thanks for this man I remember about 3 years ago watching this video I can flip pitch skip lures and all that this vid really helped a couple years ago! God loves you ❤
I’m embarrassed to say I’ve had baitcasters for years but never used them for fear of embarrassing myself in front of someone so I’ve just stuck with spinners. Going solo this week so I’ll finally get some practice. Still bring the spinner just Incase i get a bird eat so bad all that can save it is a knife
I bought an Abu Garcia setup earlier this evening after a 12 year layoff from fishing...Looking forward to using a multiplier rig again......Used to catch a few pike on lures back decades with an Abu 6500C3.....
Hell yeah man! Just picked up my first baitcaster from my neighbor and am excited to go try it out. This is exactly what I needed to know. You touched enough on what the adjustments are but mainly I needed the technique. Who knows where I'll wind up for work next week, could be hammering walleye on Lake Erie in the Astabulah area, maybe the causeway by Andover or going after whatever is in the King Chain in Wisconsin. Haven't really fished much in about 25 yrs due to depression and things but I'M BACK now and already have all species licenses in 3 states within the last couple of weeks and my gear goes everywhere with me now

Thank you for your tutorial. I've casted a baitcaster once and never went back to it. Terrible rat nest and that was that. I've been looking to try again but had no idea how to begin casting with a baitcaster. Your video is exactly what I was looking for to try again
For sure it did. Went out yesterday morning and bought a rod and reel combo. Tried it out for a bit. Happy to say no rat nests lol but definitely need some more practice casting with it.

Thanks for the upload and good detail, you just helped me tremendously! Thumbs up.
Fantastic, that is that I love to hear.
Just bought my first bait cast. Instant birds nest. Search for help on you tube, and there is Josh. I just subscribed. Thanks man!
You're welcome
You and a few other folks provide such good videos it often satisfies my craving to get out and fish for myself. that and ticks are annoying as heck!
Never even thought about adjusting the tension! I haven’t been using bait casters too long but that info is a game changer
That is right
Thank you so much this was very helpful!
Glad I could help
Excellent tutorial for baitcasting noobs!
My only problem is the severe arthritis in my hands. Makes feathering the spool with my thumb quite difficult.
I'm not giving up, but I may have to stick with my open face reel.
It's better anyway, baitcaster is a money grab that gives no benefits.
Thanks for this tutorial. I bought a bait caster years ago and grew frustrated with it and it’s been sitting ever since. I’m gonna watch your other video on the fine tuning and bird nest removal
Thanks bro. This is a great tutorial. Easy to grasp. Very practical. The demo helped a lot. Now I am buying my first bait casting set.
Great video. Thanks. I bought a baitcaster about 10 years ago, made one cast and got a birds nest bigger than my head. I put the reel back in the box and took it back the next day. I finally got the nerve to give it another shot. Your video helped a great deal. Thanks again.
You're welcome, glad to help
Mine is sitting in the corner waiting to be un-birdnested.
Mine as well, legend
this is why im scared to get one
Mine was so birdsnested It took me a week of trying to get it out, gave up and i just cut the whole spool out 😭
Fr😂
Legend has it their rods are still sitting.😅 I want one but don't want to go through that.😅
That was really good! Great description to us beginners who know nothing about fishing. Thanks for the tutorial and explaining it well.
That’s a sick combo! Awesome video
Yes sir, love that setup.
A regular blue collar man teaching us young pups. Thanks a bunch man. My first casr ruined my whole trip last week. I was flustered and pissed
quick, simple and effective. Thanks, Josh!
You are welcome, thanks for the comment.
Thanks Josh great video, I guess the advantage of a casting reel is you can cast back out quicker than a spinning reel.
There are advantages and disadvantages. Have a look at this video I made: ua-cam.com/video/dL7nSLo0JO4/v-deo.html
I am 12 year old and this video has help me and my casting out a lot I highly recommend getting a bate caster it is heaps of fun ❤😊
@@michaelspanagel6300 glad to help buddy
Been using a bait caster for over a year but I clicked on this vid just cause of how sexy that reel is
Would you prefer bait caster over spinning rod ? And why ?
Bro same
I don’t own one but did the same. F in the chat for that guys bank account. That $300 price tag sucks.
Jonathan Gatica baitcaster over spinning reel because you have so much more control over your cast and your lure. You can use any kind of lure with them, and the lure seems to move better in my opinion. Overall the baitcaster is lighter, smoother, and much more fun to use when you master the technique!!!
Same I’m eleven but been using one since I was eight
This will be very helpful. Always had a spinning reel. Parents bought me a new pole for my birthday and they didn't realize they gave me a baitcaster. I figured that was a sign I gotta learn to use one
Glad I could help!
Still learning. Thanks for the info. Every bit is helpful.
You are welcome Joyce.
My dad is coming to visit and wants me to take him fishing so I sent him this video. Thanks for explaining it so simply.
Glad to help
Just got my first one and casted out a few times I’m getting the hang of it
Just got gifted a brand new bait caster and was wonderin why I kept getting that backspin…this video was very helpful and I definitely will be referring back to it when I go to practice casting!!!
Great to hear!
Bill Dance method of simple backlash correction:
Immediately after backlash, without picking at the line and especially without PULLING ON THE LINE, simply tighten the drag ALL THE WAY DOWN, press hard on the backlashed spool with your left thumb, all while turning the reel handle two or three turns. (Dont forget to reset the drag!)
made my first time with my new reel not a bad time with how well you explained this
thank you!
Was that a YMH reference ?! Keep on Featherin brother
Mommies are everywhere, even in the fishing world...👖
Just took up the sport again and been afariad if this reel because of the nest. Well, I guess its time to man up and go back to school. Bought my first baitcaster and watching to learn the proper technique.
Your short video is very informative on casting and controlling the reel.
Good job, thank you👍
I keep birds nesting when using an overhead cast. I either release way to early or too late.
TheGentleman your settings or breaks
Also it’s best to side cast, I’ve found
Try turning your reel and rod a little sideways, for a right hand caddy your spool should face a little forward your left shoulder try that it's always worked for me
My grandparents bought me my first bait caster and I’ve never used one and I’m 20 years old, this video really helped thank you.
You're welcome
bro what combo is that it’s 🔥🔥
What is it
Reel is 13 Fishing brand. Rod is custom but that's all I know.

I’ve always wanted to get into baitcasting but have been discouraged by what others have said. But I jut picked out my first baircasting rod/reel and this video answered more questions than I had
Glad to help
I've only ever used spinning reels, and had a question. I heard you say to stop it before it hits the water, what does that mean? I want to know as much as I can before trying one out 😊
Stop the spool before the lure hits the water by thumbing it.
Joshua Taylor please read my comment and my replies from my comment pls pls it’s very important
Hey bud you are a really good teacher...calm relaxed and lil humor. You are where you need to be ....great video helped me alot!
Thanks John
I’ll need to master this since I’ll be starting kayak fishing now that I’ve retired
I already know how to cast but the super clean thumbnail made me click
That reel is hypnotizing 👀
Just bought an Ugly Stik baitcaster a little by accident cause I’m not very educated in the fishing department and was going to return it but may give a try. Thanks for the tutorial!
Great tutorial, simple and to the point.. Cheers :O)
thank you man my grandpa passed away last march, his wife gave me all his poles i love fishing i love fly fishing but i want to go bass fishin and bait caster is the way to go with that and i have one from my grandpa so thank you man 🤘🏽
You're welcome buddy, make grandpa proud.
i just turned my brakes and tension all the way down and tried casting as far as a could and it hit a tree, stopped my lure, and i spent 15 minutes getting out one of my worst backlashes ever
Don’t feel too bad buddy.... I think my worst birds nest took about 25-30 minutes 😂 god it was awful
@@trauma4465 at least ya got it out!😂
Thanks for this man I remember about 3 years ago watching this video I can flip pitch skip lures and all that this vid really helped a couple years ago!
Doug Peters i'll take one of your baitcasters if you don't want to use it😉
I bought an Abu Garcia setup earlier this evening after a 12 year layoff from fishing...Looking forward to using a multiplier rig again......Used to catch a few pike on lures back decades with an Abu 6500C3.....
Great vidoe!! I'm a novice angler. How do you fix a bird's nest? Thanks!
Have a look at this video I made: ua-cam.com/video/xK5UfRzLbR8/v-deo.html
Hell yeah man! Just picked up my first baitcaster from my neighbor and am excited to go try it out. This is exactly what I needed to know. You touched enough on what the adjustments are but mainly I needed the technique. Who knows where I'll wind up for work next week, could be hammering walleye on Lake Erie in the Astabulah area, maybe the causeway by Andover or going after whatever is in the King Chain in Wisconsin. Haven't really fished much in about 25 yrs due to depression and things but I'M BACK now and already have all species licenses in 3 states within the last couple of weeks and my gear goes everywhere with me now
I think ill stick to a spinning 😂
Yeah, used open spinreel since the mid '80s..
That pole is the hardest pole I've ever had to deal with I've had more problems with that pole than ever good video man thanks
I keep saying that my next rod and reel that I buy will be a baitcasting setup, but I keep buying spinning gear.
Pull the trigger on the baitcaster, something new and fun. 👍
@@Saltyscales Lately my something new & fun has been saltwater gear & tackle. Which is kind of weird considering that I live in SW Indiana and am over nine hours away from saltwater.
Phyllip Davis lmao, get a blackmax combo. cheap and does the job.
@Joshua Taylor.i just want to thank you for all the tips because when my dad bought me a baitcaster i really didn’t know how to use but when I watched your videos I get better and better each day so thank you very much
and btw it was a wish.com reel so it was not that great of a reel but it still worked
@Joshua Taylor can you giveaway one reel just the no need for the rod but if you do can you give to me because I really don’t know how a real baitcaster reel casts or feels and btw in May 28 it’s my birthday so if you giveaway a reel can you give it to me and if you do I will make my year but if you don’t want to if you can’t I understand it man but I just really need a real reel but if you don’t want to it’s ok
And I never win a giveaway and my birthday is in May 28 and if I win it would make my year

My dad bought me a bait caster for musky and pike. After I watched this I never got a bird nest. Thank you man
I tried these a couple of times as a teen and each time I got so mad because I kept having to restring it. This was before UA-cam. Hopefully I will try again so I can finally be successful!
Was trying a baitcaster for first time today . Kept getting birds nests so took a break and watched this video . 5 mins later I’m casting and no more birds nest .. thanks man 😄
That is awesome!
Thank you for this video. I recently bought me a baitcaster treating it like it was a spincaster. I was wondering why I was always getting backlash. Never once did I think I needed to thumb it. I appreciate you very much!
i just bought baitcaster!!!!! i found your video very helpful!!! thanks buddy
Thank you for your tutorial. I've casted a baitcaster once and never went back to it. Terrible rat nest and that was that. I've been looking to try again but had no idea how to begin casting with a baitcaster. Your video is exactly what I was looking for to try again
Glad it helped!
For sure it did. Went out yesterday morning and bought a rod and reel combo. Tried it out for a bit. Happy to say no rat nests lol but definitely need some more practice casting with it.
Thanks for the help. 27 year old in SA trying to acquire a new relaxing hobby. Lets hope this works
Best of luck!
I came here after getting my first bait caster and was having huge bird nest problem! Thank you for this video! 😊
Glad I could help!
Boy I wish I had reception at the creek earlier today. I was using a fresh out the store shimano baitcaster as a paperweight today because it birdnested twice n a row. I had to pull my sunfish in by hand like a caveman. Thanks for the vid.
This was actually a great way to learn how to stop backlash, thanks for the help dude! Only tutorial I found that actually helped
My pleasure
Thank you bro for the best tips ! This is my first week of doing casting I’ve been spinning for so long and trying new things out
I got my first one a few months ago stop using it cause it was too frustrating so I gave it a try after watching this vid now I can cast really far
Just bought one today and kept birdnesting so I knew I was doing something wrong and boy was I right thank you for your help I know exactly what I was doing wrong
This quick video helped solve the majority of my issues. Thanks so much!
You're welcome!
Thanks man. I bought one a couple weeks ago to give it a try. I totally screwed it up on the first cast like a noob. 😆
That's okay, it gets easier
