      What baitcaster is that?
      And is their any one you'd suggest for a new bass fisher. Great vid thanks for explaining this rod style.
      Ps I'm primarily a fly fisher, so fairly new to rod and reel types.

      Just make sure you try to throw on land at home with a crapoy lure. Heavier lures are easier to throw at first I'd start with something at 1 Oz. Make sure you keep your thumb on the line at first everytime you cast and slowly start to let your thumb off you'll figure it out pretty quickly it took me 3 times at about 20 min each to get the hang of it basically

    Wow just seeing this out of the box ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.

      This guy left out the whole thumbing of the spool. You dont need to set your tension so tight that it stops on the end of the cast. You use your thunb to slow it

    BEST video on baitcaster setup! I think the drag setting is overlooked. The drag is so the fish can run with your line and not break it. Some people allow the same max weight of the line, by putting a 10lb weight on the end on 10lb line and making sure drag occurs (line pulls out by fish) so you don't break it.

    • @DomonicGrow
      @DomonicGrow 6 років тому

      Yeah but you can only do that if you know exactly what lb. fish you're going to catch! lol. But good idea anyways!

    G'day David, thanks for this excellent tutorial on bait casting. I've been really apprehensive about moving to this style of fishing for fear of the dreaded bird's nest. Your step by step explanation of both the reel components as well as the four techniques has really helped allay my fears. It's early morning here in Australia and I'm about to drive 80 miles to pick up my first bait caster rod, a Daiwa Heartland Rod XA701 MFB, 10 - 17 lb line rating which is a discontinued model but I got it for a song :-) well I did also have to throw in a few bucks cos my singing aint that great. Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting my Daiwa Zillion reel from the states as you guys have some bargains going over there. I'll search out some of your other vids. Keep up the great work. regards from the land Down Under.

  • @Gottaculat
    @Gottaculat 4 роки тому +11

    I'd been using one of those old Johnson enclosed reels for about 25 years, just press and hold the button, then release button at apex of cast. Done.
    Sadly, it's a fairly light weight reel, and after moving to Washington state, I needed something more robust. I picked up a new Abu Garcia Silver Max (no user manual for some reason), got it spooled up with 20 lb line, and drove out to a local fishing spot. Bird's nest after bird's nest. I was pissed, and thought the reel had been improperly strung, so I drove it back to the store. Well, they undid the bird's nest in like a minute, and told me it was fine, that I wasn't casting right.
    Gotta say, when they told me I wasn't casting right, I felt like grabbing their head and putting it through the display case. Over 25 years of fishing, with the accuracy of practically being able to bean a fish in the head at 50 yards, caught countless fish in the lakes of Wisconsin and Illinois, and they dare tell me I'm casting wrong?
    Well, turns out these reels are COMPLETELY different, despite them calling my old reel a "baitcaster" (stupid term, because you cast bait/lures with every rod and reel), and all my years of experience meant diddly-squat with this new-fangled sci-fi reel from the future. I'm not even sure where you're supposed to grease these reels, or if you even have to like with the old ones.
    So, I'm back to looking like a complete jackass newbie in front of the other anglers until I get this new reel figured out. Your video helped a lot; I had no idea that this thing had brakes or a tension knob. I recognized the star wheel and release button easily enough, but beyond that, you may as well have sat me into the cockpit of a space shuttle and said, "just land it," like I was expected to know what all the shit in front of me does. I do much better when people explain to me what's happening on a mechanical level, like give me the nitty-gritty overly-complex explanation. The more technical, the faster I learn and master something.
    Great video, btw; WAY better than the useless lip service I hear in other videos so far. One dude's just like, "you just cast it, but feather the spool." How does that make sense to anyone who hasn't already figured it out? Whereas you spoke well and actually explained the components of the reel. That helped a ton! Thank you!

    Excellent "Baitcasting 101" course for people getting into baitcasters. Also, I recommend getting an old-school baitcaster like a Penn reel, for example the Long Beach, or the Penn 209 that have no magnetic braking. The Penn baitcasters are all about feel and to a lesser degree, sound. Their best reels have bakelite side panels and they're just built like tanks. When you've mastered a Penn, any reel with magnetic braking is going to be soooo easy, it's like cheating. And your thumb is going to know when to apply pressure automatically. It's like the clutch on a car.

    Story time... many years ago, I was sold on baitcasters. Went out, spent 300 on a setup and used it for a few months and gave it away. I was so tired of bird nests. Mind you, I (at the time) was fishing with other people constantly, and NOT one time did anyone help me with setting the adjustments.. I fished, got flustered, wasted $100s on line and all because I wasn't setting the brake or tension correctly..
    I just bought an Abu Garcia revo X and going to try again. 15lbs braid on a 7' pole..
    Thank you for this info and I hope to have better fishing experience.
    And I never expected to not have issues, hence months of trying to control the reel with my thumb.. and spin casting has just as many issues with braid line over spooling or monos memory issues.. but it seemed like every time I went fishing it was over within 30min to an hour due to catastrophic failure. Hell, after first few times I started bringing my Pfluger spinning rod knowing I would end my fishing with it lol.
    Here's to big fish, big stories, big blocks and big tts/ass
    Thanks again

    Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is the first video to make sense 👌🏼. It was the way you broke down the tension for the begining and brake for later (hitting the water). Thanks again!

    Bought a bait caster about 16 years ago. Could never figure it out. Been in the shed for the past 15 years now. Decided to take it out again after watching UA-cam videos on how to properly set it up and use it. Looking forward to giving it another try now.

    I just got my first baitcaster and thought I would be able to try a cast. Well I was very wrong and ruined probably $10 worth of line😅. But after watching this tutorial it was very clear and I am very thankful for it. It has taught everything I need to know as a beginner!

    Thanks for the tip. 1st time using this type of reel and bird nested it. Had to spend the day watching other catch fish while I was trying to untangle.😀
