I could never imagine traveling somewhere that I deem ‘strict’ and then trying to get away with dumb shit. If I visited N. Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, etc. I wouldn’t even dream of breathing the wrong way. And listen, there’s plenty of reasons to visit the many beautiful countries around the world, including playing on a sports team, but follow the goddamn rules. All of them.

When I lived in Russia in the 90’s (and I’m sure not much has changed), I was told the police will shoot first and ask questions later. After how many visits to Russia did Ms. Griner think she could mess with the law? It’s a HARSH system. You don’t take chances.

I am so tired of athletes, and sports in general, being treated like they have a rightful claim to some kind of higher purpose other than simply being entertainers. Sports are just another facet of the entertainment industry, not some honorable endeavor with high ideals. It's bad enough that entertainers and celebrities get special treatment, but the way most people seem to think that athletes are any different is disturbing. In this case, I don't know if her race had as much to do with Biden's actions as the fact that she is a high-profile celebrity within a demographic that he feels he needs to cater to.

She strikes me as being very impulsive. She clearly has a history of making bad decisions and disregarding the law. Even though drug laws are harsh in russia, she admitted that she knew these laws and chose to break one of them anyway. Its hard to feel bad for her.

She is definitely not innocent. But comparing Russia to the US. of she was caught in the use she might have only get a ticket and may be a month in jail for possession of Marijuana. She got 9 years . But those punishment are not that uncommon so in a point view of Russians the are being fair by sentencing the same out as they will a Russian citizen. It just doesn't seem fair comparing it to the punishment she will get in the US. I think she underestimate the Russians and thought of them as bunch of easy to frighten white people just like white people in the US.

I did 20 years in the Navy, we were young in those days, 17 and 18 years old. Captain said and always warned us you break local law and they cant help us. Drugs and prostitution while it may seem legal in so many places we visited, it WAS NOT! Also basket ball is BIG there, they will teach other athletes not to break the rules. I feel bad for her but she's not coming back I think, we have many sailors sitting in jails all over the world for very dumb reason. She should not be treated better than our service men and women.

Anytime you fall under the status of forces agreement doesn't give you carte blanche.
I recall while at NAF Atsugi, Japan (1980s). Some guys getting busted for selling steaks and other products from the commissary. And then there was drugs or murder. Those unlucky had to serve their sentences. Then, you find out that once they serve their time under the UCMJ, they deal with court martial proceedings!
But, to blindly ignore laws while abroad becomes just another level of ignorance and just out of touch.

Yes, remember when you pcs to your next duty station you had to wait until your replacement arrived. This follows that if you did leave command would be undermanned which means increased work load for others. A replacement changes the dynamics of manpower. Personnel Command have to replace AWOL personnel which costs.

There was a special section for Americans serving time at the prison. I believe about 60 if my memory is correct.
Also, because he removed the father who is responsible for the wife and three children he became the default. And it was something of contention and just a foreign concept to him. He was responsible for the care of 4 people. I believe in the beginning his family supported that Japanese mother and children.

Supposedly drugs are not legal in the Netherlands, just tolerated. Drugs are totally legal in Portugal. All drugs.
Prostitution should be legalized in the United States. Then the government could make prostitutes get physicals and get tested for STDs. They could make the punishment extremely harsh for anyone who tries to force an underage boy or girl into sex work.
They could make sex workers attend classes to learn about health issues and how to defend themselves. They could make sure sex workers get paid and pay taxes on their earnings.
I would be curious to know how much human trafficking occurs in countries with legalized prostitution vs. countries where it is illegal.
From what I heard she "accidentally" brought this into Russia. Like it was a vial or some kind of tool used for marijuana with a small amount of residue that she had forgotten was in one of her bags when she packed up. So she can be aware of it being a crime, but it wasn't intentional.

According to the Geneva Convention, during war between countries, taken into Custody is referred to as Detainment. There is a WAR; and imprisonment status becomes POW.
She was charged with both possession AND smuggling. Under our sentencing guidelines she would gotten automatic five years for smuggling plus 1-5 years for possession. The Russian system isn't that far off of ours

She gambled by traveling to a country (2 actually) notorious for being heavy handed to criminals, she knew she was participating in something criminal (taking a banned drug into a country it was not allowed in) and she did it all because she couldn’t fathom *only* making a quarter million dollars a year in the US where it was legal and her US rights are granted. Zero sympathy. In the current colloquialism… she F’ed around and now she’s finding out. The world can’t start trading petty criminals for warlords.
The crazy thing is that it’s not even legal to fly with it in the U.S., so even when traveling domestically you have to be alert to that kind of stuff. That said, unlike Russia’s LEOs, the TSA doesn’t have dogs for drugs, and if it’s found via regular inspection, they just refer you to local law enforcement who will probably just detain and fine you if you’re in a legal state (or, honestly, just drop it if you’re a first-timer AND athlete).
Terrible decisions all around. 9-1/2 years is insane and the Russians are almost certainly using her as a pawn but why even put yourself at risk of triggering an international incident in the first place?

When I was in college, I did some religious studies over seas in Singapore and Indonesia. The very first thing we were told is to STOP thinking of yourself as an American citizen with rights because you AREN'T in America.
I really do sympathize with her plight, and I know it's just political at the end of the day, but this was her fault by oversight and not really paying attention to Russian law. I was fortunate enough to have a interpreter that patiently told me how to comport myself in his nation. Mainly, that their laws were far stricter that what I was used to and my nationality meant nothing there.

I'm a black male and was followed by police and had most of my movements followed. I knew that I was a rare bird to them and many admitted that other than the occasional African diplomats, they had never seen an American black, but were certain that I was like the blacks they saw on old sitcoms. But that was around the time that the Moore kid got arrested for vandalism and got caned. I knew of caning, but didn't know how many offenses could get you caned. You used trash receptacles, you flushed and cleaned the public toilet after use, you didn't spit anywhere besides inside your home. Most of all, whatever a policeman told you to do, you did it. I saw a street merchant not move his cart when told to, and the truncheons came out fast. They beat him bloody, took his cart, and took him to jail immediately.
I take foreign police very seriously.

the hypocrisy on her part is that she protested American policies but was completely ok with millions of russians being detained and imprisoned for something she freely enjoys in America and didn't feel the need to protest this inhumane policy, she was ok with receiving money from the country that supports the harshest possible treatment of cannabis users like herself and thought that these rules won't apply to her - a typical mistake of those who work for any dictatorship, thinking they'll be spared for loyalty.

@@ToniHunterOne I was actually working with some russian pro-weed activists back in 2010s before they were all either thrown in jail or were forced to emigrate, and even back then getting caught with weed was a nightmare for any weed smoker there, the attempt to smuggle hash oil on Brittany's part was insane.
Do you honestly think she knew that it was such a major crime there? I am by no means excusing her by the way. I am originally from a state where weed is illegal. If caught with enough of it, you get major time. Many are still are arrested for possession, even in small amounts. They think it is illegal but no biggie. They weren't "Wrongfully Detained". They broke that countries law. "Overly Harsh" is being ethnocentric. Some countries use the death penalty for drugs. It's the responsibility of the person traveling abroad to know and honor the laws of the country they are going to.

Under Article 6.8, possession of ‘small amounts’ of drugs is an administrative offence punishable by a fine of RUB4,000 - RUB5,000 ($65 - $85) or Administrative Detention of up to 15 days. If anything, "Overly Harsh", and "Political Pawn" are understatements.
Even in the United States the use and possession of cannabis is illegal under federal law for any purpose by way of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. Plenty of not famous people have been imprisoned for bringing trivial amounts into the country.
A Brazilian citizen where killed in a country with tolerance zero for drugs trafficking. For them it is a big deal, no one could save the guy, big mistake cost it his life.

And Brittany isn't stupid, she has played there for a better part of a decade. She also makes 4x more money there playing basketball than she does here. Why would she take that chance when she is a celebrity there and could find weed in Russia.

Considering her long list of previous offences with minimum punishment in the US, she probably thought she was above the law and would always get away with it. This seems to be the only plausible explanation why she would do something as incredibly silly as travelling by plane with illegal drugs. Sad story, however it could have been avoided if she had been punished accordingly when she first committed violent acts instead of letting her go with a slap on the wrist. The rule of law doesn't apply to celebrities in the US.

I remember seeing Midnight Express on cable when I was a kid. That put me off from traveling to other countries and running afoul of their criminal justice system. People tend to forget where they are and where they came from in certain situations, and considering how skewed the court system is in America, I do not know why someone would mess around in a country like Russia. Smoke your $h!t before you get to the airport or throw it away. That is probably sound advice in 98% of the world.

I thought that the Russian authorities would want to throw their own law books at Victor Boote because he sold armaments that belonged to the Soviet military to other militaries around the world, taking advantage of the collapse of the Soviet government and military structure, for his own personal gain. The fact that a vehicle is covered by the 4th amendment is the result of a non obvious interpretation of the amendment and arguably a consequence of the US's car culture. There are provisions similar to the 4th amendment in the ECHR, they just don't necessarily apply to private metal boxes temporarily situated on public spaces.

My daughter flew to Saudi Arabia last year. She made a connecting flight in Paris, where she had to change her attire and cover her head. She understood this regulation before she ever left the U.S. While there she was forbidden to travel at night without a male escort. When she approached a busy intersection on foot, all traffic stopped regardless of the traffic signal because a woman was crossing the street. She stated that of all the places in the world she could live, she would select Saudi Arabia as #1. She understood the rules and customs and was fine with them all. Incidentally, the penalty for drug possession in Saudi Arabia is DEATH.
Your daughter needs to do a lot more research if she thinks Saudi Arabia would be a great place to live. Especially as a woman.
