Hypocrisy and deception are two key elements in the success of any mega-church pastor or TV evangelist. Other important factors are greed, holier-than-thou arrogance, and the ability to blather on for hours without saying anything of worth or significance. It also helps to have pitiless disdain for the suckers who will send you the money which will enable your lavish lifestyle. These shameless hucksters are "spiritual" in the same way most politicians are "honest." They are all about PROFITS, not prophets.

People gladly pay a one-time fee to listen to a famous scientist talk on a learned subject and by doing so, learn about the real world of Nature. Instead of filling their minds with superstitious nonsense and supernatural fears, their minds are filled with the wonder and beauty of science and the natural world. They therefore gain an insight into that which has so obviously advanced the human race from the dark times when the thoughts of man were choked by the ignorance and simple but incomplete answers offered by religion. I assume the great and famous Richard Dawkins does all right for himself financially, but he is not a filthy and sinfully rich man like these hypocritical "Christian Pastors" who's bloated money bags will never allow them to fit through the eye of a needle.

As a Colorado Springs resident, I can tell you the following, Haggard got caught with a male prostitute doing drugs. But prior to this, that New Life Church fired a lesbian security guard who took out a would be mass shooter on that church campus. They forgot about THAT. Haggard then took off for another state for a while, THEN he came back here, started the 'Red Barn Church' at his house on Ranch Road about 3 blocks away from New Life Church. I know this cause I used to drive past it all the time on my pest control route. He bought horses and riches which is interesting since he was shamed, where'd he get all that money? His wife made a book "Why I Stayed" We all know WHY she stayed, cause she's a leech and it's all about the money. She hasn't worked a real job in her entire life. As far as that house on Ranch Road, it's easily a million dollar home on Ranch Road/Voyager Parkway in Colorado Springs, CO. Now he has some 'church' out in Rockrimmon (a suburb of Colorado Springs, CO). He continues to be a scam artist. No-one here likes him and we are all appalled and embarrassed that he lives here.
I ended up doing the pest control for Brady Boyd, who took over and he and his family are super nice folks. I never went to that church though.

The pastor, John Lowe II, was called out in front of the congregation by this female, now an adult in her 30s, for misrepresenting this “relationship” as an affair instead of the predatory and inappropriate (if not criminal and abusive) nature of it since she was only 16 years old when he took her innocence away and continued to engage in this for many years after.

I think it's complicated and there are many various factors. The fact that his fathered lured him to the college with an expensive car says alot about the manipulative and controlling ways of his father, and that the father valued money and prestige more than ethics and taught his son to do the same. Most sons want to please their fathers and feel they'll receive the love they crave as children by allowing their parents to control them, even at an older age. That could've maybe played into the homosexual tendencies, along with being molested by a man if that was true.

EMDR was used in my sessions as I worked with my doctor to replace the deep-seeded negative belief systems I had developed from a childhood of physical and emotional abuse. I’m not approaching this from a scientific perspective, but rather from my own personal experience. I thought it was really effective and I remember having vivid dreams, which I was required to document for my next session, after an EMDR session. All I can say is my life has completely transformed from what I was, a self hating alcoholic, to someone who respects themself and is actually building a really fulfilling life at home, work, and in education. I believe this is a typical policy, without any professional mental health practitioners involved. He is a very smart guy and would require a savvy male psychiatrist who is experienced in religious issues. Anyone less he would have no respect for and try to turn the tables on. I have worked with others like him, says all the right things but does not do the right things. I was psychologically abused by a pastor who spiritually and sexually abused two other women. His credentials were rescinded but no restitution of any kind was required, no involvement of police and no accountability to the three of us happened by the denomination he no longer pastors. I'm afraid I have to disagree that EMDR has the unnecessary component of eye movement. I'm not sure if the mechanism actually does anything to process memories. Still, it is helpful to give an individual with trauma something innocuous to direct their attention toward as they work. It prevents lapses into safety behaviors and prevents the pt from reading perceived nonverbals of the therapist. As you know, most people with trauma are eager to accommodate the other individual by reading body language and altering their thoughts and behaviors for a better-perceived outcome. I have found that EMDR is a great fit for someone more prone to heightened emotions and hypervigilance.

This is a really good point: EMDR seems to help individuals with trauma to tolerate and integrate the exposure. Without the eye movement component, many find the exposure piece of the treatment too distressing to continue. It might very well be that the part of EMDR that helps is the "structured" activity of moving eyes. The research that has been done does call into question the original theory of WHY EMDR works, but too many people (esp. people who have not had to go to therapy for THEIR OWN TRAUMA TREATMENT) say that because the theory was disproven, EMDR is disproven. There's too many people who say EMDR was the key for their trauma healing after all these years for a responsible observer of treatment efficacy to ignore, imo. It needs to be looked into further.

We got through it but for my dad it was really hard. I guess that's why the Bible tells us not to follow man. They'll let you down every time because they're human.

What I find most disturbing from a Biblical standpoint is when the accusations came out, instead of being like "hey guys, I did something extremely wrong and I am ashamed, I now am going to step down from this position" he doubled down and acted like it was not as serious as it was. In short, for churches that follow the Biblical model of pastoral duties, he is no longer fit for service as a pastor. Not saying he can not maintain other roles but that is a huge breach of his duties.
That aside, I saw the HBO docu and what I saw was an insecure man who lived off the fact he was popular and had a following, and that never sat well with me. I never really got into his doctrinal teachings but I would not be surprised if there were some major things I would call red flags there too.

As a pastor myself I’ve noticed that stories of fallen pastors are a particularly rich source of schadenfreude for lots of folks. That’s why it works well as click bait. I wonder, however, if failing to meet the high standards you have set for yourself and others is really worse than not having high standards to begin with?

If you can't meet the standards you set for yourself what makes you think you have any business setting others up for failure?
Living by real standards is better than failing at imaginary high standards.
The dishonesty involved in maintaining the illusion of so called high standards in public when you know you are not putting in the effort you demand of others is something that will always be entertaining to watch unravel.

No one is taking any pleasure in this. As Christians, we are disgusted with hypocritical religious leaders. Jesus was disgusted with hypocritical religious leaders (see Mathew chapter 23). You, however, seem to be supportive of the hypocritical religious leaders. It's interesting when "pastors" make statements that are exactly the opposite of Jesus' statements. Why would this be? Could it be because they know that Jesus is talking about them in Matt 23. Could it be that they are doing the same thing. Why would a "Christian" pastor's opinion be the opposite of Jesus'... something to think about. Also, if you think that expecting a church leader to not be a hypocrite, thief, adulterer, child molester, and liar are "high" standards then I would love to know what "low" standards are to you. You seem to have pretty low standards if you believe this. Much lower than even the general public.

A rare case of a pathological liar and consistent grifter who actually got what they deserved, and lives to endure the punishment, which doesn't happen often. People seem to posit his circumstances as tragic, as if he was an unwilling participant, or even a victim of happenstance or confusion but he is evil through and through. He had conscious awareness of the hurt he has caused others in his selfishness and he participated in this for decades, and further to that continued to do so even after being caught out. People like him do untold damage to the fight for any equality. and undermine any attempts at positive activism.

Hello, Dr. Grande. It's been a while since I commented. Thank you for such a concise explanation of EMDR. The non-profit I work for got on the EMDR bandwagon in early 2020. They were sending anybody and everybody to training/certification that cared to take advantage of the OVERLY expensive seminars. My direct observation of cases using EMDR show about a 40% success rate but a deeper, QA study, found about 20% of those successes were due to other factors: sobriety, successful lifestyle changes, proper diagnosing, etc. About the only thing it has encouraged me to do as a clinician is find 1-2 CLEVER additions, to, say, CBT, like CBT-JK, publish a paper and hit TED Talks, I always enjoy your analysis of topics, especially modalities that are not as advertised.

I have never ever heard a perpetrator talk so freely about their crime and utterly despicable sexual desires. It turned my stomach to hear that. And cherish's mother is a... piece of work I guess you can say. I'm not sure she's all there. I highly suspect she was on drugs and that clouded her judgement.
