Being an American and living in France I was shocked to see all the differences in prices to the food they carry in the supermarket. For the milk and eggs I have some factoids
First the milk in France the milk industry practices the U.H.T sterilization technique , where in the U.S you only do regular pasteurizing. The difference is that pasteurization is only killing the nasty bacteria but leaves the milk "still alive" , while the U.H.T technique consist of heating the milk in a pressurized container at 280°C for 12 seconds, functionally it kills ALL bacteria even the good stuff and it also alters the milk composition slightly making it shelf stable until you open the bottle.
U.H.T killing all of the good bacteria that's why we're kind of "yogurt obsessed" since we can't get the lacto bacils that are good for your stomach flora otherwise. Which of course the dairy industry (be it animal or vegan) won't be complaining about since you know now everyone eats yogurt or cheeses as a result. :P
Onto eggs now :
Have you ever noticed that on eggs shells there's always a code being written on it ?
Well that code contains a lot of info but the most important is about the type of places (and therefore farming practices) where the comes from as the first number on the code.
2 = Those big places where the hens are in tiny cage can't move around never see the light of the day and have a horrible life
1 = The hens are getting outside at designated moment of the day but still live mostly in quarter where although they do roam free they are also sadly bunched together in a space that real too tight
0 = The hens are having the best life quality possible they have the biggest amount of space are free to go outside and also they are fed only things that are natural for hens and chicken to eat which is not guaranted in 1, and 2 . Which explains why the eggs marked as "bio" are all bearing a 0 code
That being said inside that 0 you'll find eggs where the farmers are still following the regulations of the E.U to cutoff the beak and to cutoff the back of the foot claw on the hens , while farmers who chose to not mutilate and who are following a path of cruelty free farming are also bundled inside that 0 code , in France the various animal rights associations are lobbying hard to get the X starter of the code to be created to create a "fully organic and cruelty free" code so that 0 will be the guys that are cutting off beaks and back claws.
And as you guessed it as a traditional hipophagus Frenchie from Northern France I am part of the people giving money to association to make that shit happen.
Long story short horse meat eating tradition in France is not JUST horse meat eating we are also "functionally ovopescatarians" since outside of the one chunk of horse meat a week we stick to eggs and poultry and fish and we've for long been animal rights defenders when it comes to farming techniques. Being that I am from that tradition yes I would like hens bodies to be left alone just vaccinate them and the pamper them with love you MANIACS !

Such a neat and tidy supermarket 😂 it’s similar to some of the superstores we have in the UK, although on a much bigger scale with the selection on certain departments. The long life milk is so handy, especially if you don’t live walking distance to a shop. We don’t, so we always keep a few spare in the cupboard for desperate times xx

Great video! whenever we leave the city we always stop at one of the big supermarkets to stock up 😆 I've heard the reason behind pink toilet paper is because it is less chemicals to dye it pink instead of bleaching it white!!

I love the markets and grocery stores in France. The wine and cheese aisle are endless. My French gf living in Lyon usually has a minimum of
7 frommage in her fridge. I love the cheeses and all desserts and the bread.

It’s truly amazing how much cheese they have here! The bread here is so damn good, I eat so many baguettes. For this video I just used the iPhone 12 pro because it’s more discrete and edited with Premiere Rush. I also use Canon Eos M50 with the lens it comes with and also the Fujifilm XT3 and 18-55mm f2.8 lens.

Btw, I would suggest you Casino for the peanut butter at the foreign section. I dont remember the country rn, but they have plenty of sortiments without sugar.

A good tip concerning peanut butter at Carrefour, … you should go in the international aisle and under the African section you will find a huge glass jar of peanut butter, with a yellow cover ( the name of the brand is “Bonmafé” ) which is not only delicious , but also has a clean ingredient list with 97% of peanuts .
The aisle you called “yogurt aisle”, has a big choice of yogurt indeed but you should call it the desert aisle because it has all those différent deserts as well, like: creams , sour creams ,cottage cheeses, plain quarks or with fruit flavors ( faisselles, fromages blancs, fromages frais aromatisés aux fruits) , puddings , custards (flans), chocolate mousses ,rice puddings etc, etc ... ;)

@@SamFournier avec grand plaisir!… I’m from Belgium … so I’m not sure you’ll have it where you live , but usually all Carrefour’s in France and Belgium have similar products… ;)
@@SamFournier @me I buy peanut butter at the organic store or the organic isle in the larger supermarkets, it is 100% natural (like you would make it yourself which you could also do!) and easy to find.
europe have a different sterilize processus than the us they can leave milk eggs etc without refrigeration

It’s hard to say because I’m vegan so I’m limited in options but my favorite snacks here that are vegan are Granola cookies and I love the Monster Munch BBQ chips. My husband isn’t vegan and he loves Le Sprits cookies, Lindt Chocolate Bars, and Lay’s 3ds Bugles. Hope this helps.

Also for peanut butter in France ironically believe it or not if you go to a bio only grocery store known as "coop bio" or "magasin bio" you'll find more selection.

How is it living in France as a vegan? Do you find enough stuff?😬
I find quite a few items but it’s definitely not like Los Angeles. They have yogurt, chocolate, ice cream, cheese ( imitations of goat cheese or cheese with herbs, not Parmesan or cheese slices) meat substitutes and I even have a vegan patisserie in my neighborhood! I always get so excited when I find new vegan products, I just found beyond the meat at a local grocery store but it was way too expensive. I would say the only difficult thing is eating out.

thing I noticed about British/French grocery stores... you bag your own stuff... love how these stores have trained people to do the jobs of the cashier... must be a good job to have over there, all you have to do is scan the food and collect the money...SMH

It's a question of fair competition regarding other small (closed) shops that only sell non-essential items.
Yes, this! I too always feel so overwhelmed in French supermarkets (in American ones as well, as we really don't have them of this huge size in The Netherlands where I'm from!). So I now only go to smaller ones that I know and where I know where to find stuff. Because the lines in the big supermarkets are often crazy! And then I go to specialist organic stores that buy from local farmers. It is much easier to shop this way, you may find that helpful?
It is so funny to see all the differences you point out, like pink toilet paper and putting everything in your bag yourself. I have been to the US very often and have never really noticed those differences. The one thing I found horrible in most US supermarkets is that it is so hard to find "clean" food: there are so many additives in the American products, like dried fruit in a normal supermarket will be sweetened. When I was last there with my kids I realized: if we were to live here I could simply not raise them the way I can here in France or it would take so much more work to offer them healthy food and teach them how to have a "clean diet". I am so grateful that we can still find good food here. In the south of France the organic stores have even better fruits I believe than here in Burgundy, it is such a treat!

She even has the first and only junk free sun screen ever, that I absolutely love. Her business is huge but it is not in English yet, but they do ship to France as I order my products online as well.
Thanks for sharing this fun video! Oh and by the way: I was filming at an Intermarché once and was called to meet the manager as well who told me in France it is illegal to film in a store... I think it is one of those crazy things of France. I film everywhere but always ask permission now :)
I completely agree with you that the food in America is garbage. I’m so grateful for the fresh foods at the local farmers markets and bio stores. I really do dislike Carrefour and hope to one day do all my shopping at a bio store and have a lovely garden like yourself! Thank you for sharing your friends products.
All the crazy laws, we learn as we go. After that happened I always make it a point to ask and people just look at me weird and say yes🤣
