  • The French love their daily visits to la boulangerie and other neighborhood stores, but like many people in the rest of the Western world, they also like deals and convenience. They have shopped at les hypermarchés (hypermarkets,) since the 1960s. Véro takes you around one of these superstores and shares her favorite products and shopping tips.
What you will learn in this video:
    - Find your way around a French hypermarket and learn handy shopping tips.
    - Pronounce French words and brand names.
    - Identify some of the best products one can buy in a French supermarket.
    Tutorial / Things to Remember:
    - un hypermarché (a hypermarket, a superstore) (Edouard) Leclerc, Carrefour, Auchan, Géant Casino, and more, typically located in the suburbs.
    - This store's location: "le 93" (la Seine St Denis, east of Paris.) All French administrative geographic subdivisions are identified with two digits (found in postal codes and other places.) Downtown Paris is 75.
    - La parapharmacie: Quality beauty products found in most pharmacies or in the "parapharmacie" section of many hypermarkets.
    - Apéritif (Apéro:) Refers to a favorite French ritual similar to Happy Hour, and to food and beverages served to celebrate that special time of day (saucisson, dry sausage, being a favorite.)
    - "Bio" (biologique,) organic products. Trendy!
Disclaimer: Brie is a cheese, and also a region outside Paris, not a city. The two main cities where Brie is produced are Meaux and Melun. I realized this while listening to the video afterwards! ;-)

    E. Leclerc is the best! Mostly cleaner stores and more variety of grocery products, Nos Regions Ont Du Talent is also my favorite housebrand, and Tres Madiere is again my favorite grocery boulangerie brand.
The good thing about France is the quality of food is much higher that even in hypermarkets you can find goods that are sold overseas in expensive boutiques.
But you are right, globalization has brought a lot of mugs, and if I may say so, unnecessary dry goods that are bad for the environment (plastic utensils, cheap luggage, toys).

Bonjour Joan. The legal drinking age in France is 18. French hypermarkets look very much like their American counterparts. Thank you for stopping by!

@@francewithvero I ' m sorry but you are mixing up two things. Minimum drinking age and minimum purchase age. While you do need to be 18 to buy, there is no minimum legal drinking age in France. You can give a little alcool to your children. Making them drunk is illegal.

Lol. Yeah, ok. Give wine to your kids. After all, they only prohibited wine in school in the 1980s I believe.

@@francewithvero it depends on the age the prohibition in school didn't start at the same date for younger and older children

First thing I do when I visit France, after unpacking, is hitting Carrefour, LeClerc, or Super U. And the local markets. It helps me get acclimated to the French lifestyle.

My advice on bagging, I liked it when we were free to bag our own. You don't have to bag everything, don't bag things that are large or heavy. I normally use between one and three bags. Just bag that small stuff, or pack it in the cart and do your bagging at the car.

Yeah. I've been using my cloth ones for years, but clearly jugs with handles or bottle six packs of beer don't need a bag.

Bonjour. Thank you for your comment. There are Leclerc Hypermarkets (or Auchan, Carrefour, the main competitors) all around Paris, but typically more in the suburbs. The stores are too big and would not fit downtown! A bientôt!
