I am a big fan of Toto and when I happen to play any of their videos on UA-cam I end up trapped in a Toto hits marathon. I don't know if I could ever pick a favorite Toto album but this one could very well be it. Bands like Toto and Saga deserve more recognition than what they get. Still enjoying their classic s in 2021.
You and I like wrestling and the same music. I’m puertorrican too. We must had crossed paths before and I don’t know you. Shame! We could had spent hours talking about our hobbies.
Holyshit, I thought Myself and maybe about 100 other people were blessed with an excellent ear for great music when you mention SAGA! So let's make it 101!!!
I'm a huge fan of British and European prog rock and not crazy about American rock, but TOTO is an exception. Hydra was the first American rock album I bought. 40 years have passed and I still love it as much as I did when I first listened to it.
When I bought my first CD player, yes, a looooong time ago, I bought the single of Pink Floyd's Learning to Fly. The single, not the album, because I was a poor student. The B-side had One slip and Terminal frost. From that day, I was a Floyd fan. Never underestimate the power of the B-side :-)
Definitely the best band in the world. No other band worked so stable over 40 years on there own music but also for the greatest artist and productions that were made on such a high class level. It‘s actually a fact.
David Hungate is one of the most underrated bassists of all time w/r/t his overall skill set. He also did all those killer bass parts on Boz Scaggs's 'Silk Degrees' and 'Down Two Then Left' records. Slap, fingerstyle, plectrum - he could do it all
I was a little kid when 99 song was on the radio every single day, I liked that song a lot, my mum went and bought the 45 single but didnt know that Hydra song was on side B. I feel in love with this song inmediately and now it´s in most of my playlists. I think it´s the best song ever composed by Toto!
TOTO Hydra was literally my "first" rock album and started me down the path of diverse rock and an appreciation for various styles. There's nothing like your first, and so nothing but fond memories and love for all the songs on this album. Thank you TOTO!
Their best album, by far. Gotta love "Mama". My favorite cut. The drum work by Jeff Porcoro is brilliant. I understand he has passed away a number of years ago. 😢 Wore it out on vinyl.
During my coming of age years, I heard TOTO for the first time on the local FM album rock station in WPB, Florida, this one Hydra, and Girl Goodbye, from their first album. I was hooked, and for years to come! Quite simply, the best overall talent ever for an American rock band!!!
The biggest reason I was happy for the invention of the CD was I got tired of wearing out the 8track and cassette of Hydra. People need to understand how great this music is.
8 tracks! OMG I hated them from the beginning! Changing channels in the middle of a track - ugh! Cassettes, too. The sound quality was horrible and got worse each time they were played. I used to buy LPs and make my own cassette mixes. They lasted longer, and I could re-record when they wore out. Of course, this was when I didn't have a real job and a life, lol.
I saw them in '80 and '82. The first show was absolutely gnat's-azz perfect. After the '82 show the whole crowd wanted their money back. These guys were/are top-shelf studio musicians who formed a band; the skill sets required for studio musicianship and live performance don't completely overlap. Even geniuses have off days
Bobby Kimball was having voice issues by 1982 and the band hired a new singer around this time. David Hungate, the original bassist, left after IV was recorded. Steve Porcaro was given less creativity around that time. It took the band a while to adjust.
❤❤❤ I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I HEARD "HYDRA" IN ITS ENTIRETY. BACK IN THE DAYS OF ALBUM ROCK STATIONS. IT WAS THE MIDNIGHT SHOWCASE BEFORE THE ALBUM WAS RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC. THANKS TOTO❤❤❤
La banda original de TOTO... perfecta y el tema perfecto...todo es bueno: los teclados, el bajo, la guitarra, las voces, la melodía, la coordinación, la fuerza, la armonía ....pertenecen a lo clásico hace rato...

Came here to say this song was underrated. Changed my mind. The entire ALBUM is seriously underrated. If you ask the average music fan what their favorite Toto album is, most would probably say IV. If you ask the serious Toto fan, most will say Hydra.
EXACTLY. This is very much their prog album, although prog is there all the time in their music because the playing, arrangements and production is always there.
Why did people stop growing that cool long hair? I always thought they looked like lions singing, men back in the 1970s and 80s. Best music ever way ahead of its time way ahead of 2,020.
The entire band is credited with writing this one, not just David Paich. And the band could always prog from day one. Child's Anthem, the coda of I'll Supply the Love... there were few genres Toto couldn't work in.
Hungate wrote the main beat, Paich wrote the piano intros, Lukather wrote the guitar solo, Jeff Porcaro wrote the snare drum breaks/solos, Bobby Kimball wrote the lyrics and Steve Porcaro wrote the ambient synth intro at the very beginning (cut out of this video). Big ass song

I saw TOTO perform in Pensacola Florida in 1985 at a free Beach Concert during Spring Break. Great show from what I can remember. I was a College Kid Partying at the Event
No autotune, no computers, just pure talent and skill.
Yes I agree.
100% music genius- toto
And a great sounding song to top it off

This was the B-side to "99." Best .99 cents my parents ever spent on a 45 single back then.

This album is incredibly underated

Simply a masterpiece of classic rock! Plain and simple. Period.
Got to agree
This is more than classic rock, it has progressive, classical music and some many other influences. To me their masterpiece.
Not saying all new music is bad. But 90% of the songs sound the same, like a robot. This type of music has personality and gets me invested.
Me too. Always been totally obsessed with Toto loved them in the 80’s when I was a teenager. I’m now 50 and still my favorite band of all time.
