Love the ending when Jeff beats the living crap out of the drums, throws the sticks behind him with a top THAT you mother attitude then sticks his arms in the air. Man... Jeff Porcaro was the best. I wonder, and I am sure this is a lot, how many artists that he worked with stepped back and just WATCHED him play thinking, how I got THIS genius for MY session I will never know. Whatever he was paid for doing what he so obviously loved, obviously wasn't enough money for this genius. Of all the artists/musicians who have come and gone, Jeff Porcaro will always be in my top 5 people, if not top 3, of who I miss the most.
Scale for session players back then was 165 per 3 hour session and he was double scale. So you could have him for 330 bucks. He could easily lay down 3 tracks in that time (or more) so looking at about 100+ bucks per song. Not a bad deal even at today’s prices adjusted for inflation. I’d pay it in a heart beat.
Jeff Porcaro...hell of a drummer and one of my biggest influences. Too bad he left too soon... Everytime I see this old Toto videos I got mixed emotions...this was the best Toto´s line up ever...this is the music for the music! This is great musicianship and brotherhood all in one...
Ah, Jeff. Time like an atomic clock. Groove. Feel. Intensity. Not only an all-time session great, but a great live player. And a great in-your-face emphasis by tossing the sticks at the coda. Si-Phi is a great player, but there is only one true master who owns the Toto seat. RIP. You are missed.
andrew haines Well I think Simon Phillips played his part with immense respect to Jeff but he's a legend and one of the greatest drummers currently by his own merits
Agree. I also think Keith Carlock is one of the greatest drummers alive, but as phenomenal as he's been with Steely Dan every time I've seen him, he just did not (or could not) play aggressively enough for the Toto rockers when he toured with them.
Totally agree, posibbly my favorite album by them. It was not well received (such a shame), so much so that the band was afraid Columbia would drop them. Then came Toto IV and the rest is history
@@manuelroyo4539 I love the Turn Back album. But, I think the mix of the album is one of reasons it didn’t do so well. It’s very low in volume, and a little muddy, and all the other instruments are in the back and the drums and vocals are up front. But, it’s one of my favorites.
It's impossible to lose with Toto. Bobby KImball's genius diminished in later years, but it shines on the first four albums. I feel that Toto are both the most talented and the most overlooked band. Jeff Porcaro was is and always will be the best drummer ever. Nobody will ever top him and it's a shame he's gone.
Same with keyboardist Steve Porcaro, who is now the only one of the three Porcaro brothers left after the middle of the three, bassist Mike, died in March 2015 of complications from Lou Gehrig's disease, which severely made him lose his nimbleness on the bass. However, Steve hadn't performed regularly with Toto since the group's most recent reunion in 2020.

you don't even have to turn it up very loud to notice the lyrics he sings! though I do. but my mother had an old cassette of IV in 1985(she recorded herself from the radio) and even as muddy as it was I could hear Kimball's moody "Waiting for your Love' got my attention real quick that Toto is FAR more than "Africa".
People remember All of the original members of Toto were studio musicians , then they got together to form TOTO ,which is why they are so great. They had it all ,talent, talent , talent and more talent.
Not only were they studio musicians. They were on almost every song on the radio back in the 70s and 80s individually or collectively whether it was R &B or pop rock each of them were there. If you heard that song "She's a beauty " by the TUBES . Steve Lukather wrote/cowrote that song 🎵. The lead singer is FEE WAYBILL but the chorus of that song ALL the vocals in the chorus of that song is BOBBY KIMBALL.

Such a great Toto cut.... this should have been a bigger hit than Africa if radio had of supported playing more than 2 or 3 songs out of their vast discography.
This song and "Angel Don't Cry"(video) are my all-time favorite Toto songs. The drumming here is absolutely incredible. This is some of the greatest song writing that has ever been done. What a masterpiece of music. The vocalist in "Angel Don't Cry" is one of the greatest that Toto has ever had. But, all their vocalists are some of the most talented of any of the great rock and roll bands.

I personally don't think you can measure different bands by their success because you could do it differently and the time difference between the singers and bands cannot be compared. Although if you did want to compare Toto in terms of popularity by records sold it is 40 million, but Elvis has sold 250+ million. I do not think there is any difference in talent between them because they are all geniuses in their own way, but obviously, Elvis hit a nerve with the public.
@Scott Murphy I think those who know Toto and his contributions to rock and music in general see this great band as very underrated because for many they should be on the same "pedestal" as The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, etc. for their quality and versatility (I read that normally their sessions were recorded in one go or after very few takes). Some see them as another group from the 80's, when they are much more than that, besides the fact that the critics shredded them and were not as salesmen as others groups (collectively, of course). I don't know how they see them in the United States in general, but from what I've read, they should have been better received and much more appreciated. I don't know if I'm wrong about that... By the way, why some many the Toto songs with women's names on them? Just curiosity :P
