  • Jaguar XK8 project this week:
    The latest instalment on my Jaguar XK8 series.
    If you have been following my channel you would have heard that I was going to replace my fuel pump, well after putting it off for ages I have finally taken the plunge to swap it out.
    please watch the video to see my progress and to see how I have done it.
    this is not a how to video, simply a video showing how I have done the job, please follow all health and safety procedures and realise the fact that petrol is extremely flammable and dangerous.

      Hi Andrew, appreciate that buddy. It was deffo a shall I or shan't I drain the tank, but he who dares!! All turned out well in the end 👍 ☺

    Many thanks for this. I was all set to take my tank out then found this. I can confirm it's possible to replace the pump on a 98 coupe the same way through the subwoofer hole. The only hiccup I had was dropping the 7mm head screw, holding the mounting bracket on, into the tank but retrieved it with a magnet. It's a fiddle but it works. Much appreciated 👍

      Hi John, great to have you along buddy. I'm glad you managed to do the job without the hassle of removing the tank and that you found the video useful. All the best mate, Simon.

    Brilliant vedio
    I have diagnosed a faulty fuel pump died.
    All vedios I saw show taking the tank off. Horrible job with disconnecting fuel lines. It's a pig of a job as it appear to take the fuel lines off. I think jaguar manual says you an do the job without taking the fuel tank off.
    I prefer this method than taking the tank off.
    Very good points made about working with inflammable fuel so with any work if you have done your health and safety assessment and written down a method to make sure the job is safe then I don't see this any riskier than syphoning the fuel out and discounting fuel line s, and never mind the accidental spillage if fuel on the ground which is bad for the little creatures...!!
    Well done mate.
    One point for anyone attempting a phone connected led camera can help see inside the tank whilst working. If course work up safety and how the phone and camera need to be mounted etc given inflatable fuel.

      Hi buddy, thanks so much for your kind response.
      As you mention, as long as you assess the situation properly and take all steps to reasonably reduce the risk, then it is safe to do it this way.
      All the best with your replacement, and I hope it goes smoothly for you.
      Thanks again, Simon

    I text you earlier about the fuel tank and your way is a lot better then I have one other thing to ask you about are your lights on the steering wheel backlit? And one other have you made a video on how to take off drip rail? Highly appreciated I love how you end John explain things step-by-step in a slow Mander other people just talk so fast and just throw it in there you don't know what the hell they're talking about LOL thank you

      Hi again, buddy. I appreciate your kind comments, thank you. If you mean the drip rail above the drivers door and window, then yes, I do. It's one of the last videos in the XK8 playlist about stopping the water from getting into the car. To be totally honest, I've not driven my car at night for a while now. The XK8 is actually sold, and I have an XKR project ongoing at the moment. I will check tomorrow for you, though, and let you know about the steering wheel buddy 😉

    You're lucky to have that circular thing in your package tray mine doesn't have that I will have to cut a hole where your little hole is at to get to it or I will have to take out the tank😢

      Oh dear, just go careful and really consider the options when swapping the pumps over. Hopefully you can work out a way of doing it without removing the tank. Good luck buddy 👍

    Great stuff, very well done Simon. I was wondering how you were getting on with this job. The XK looks easier than an XJ of the same era (no subwoofer hole above the tank flange from memory). Really good you did not need to pull the tank back. Also, I forgot to mention we had issues with the connector also and took the exact same route you did with soldering and heat shrink. Hard enough job without trying to film it.

      Hi James, thanks for that buddy. That was an unexpected hiccup with rhe different electrical connection, but turned out all good in the end 👍

      Hi Jon, good to hear from you buddy. Its not a bad job to do, it's a bit different in the convertible as I understand it 👍

    • @throwback19841
      @throwback19841 7 місяців тому +1

      @@projectsinthebarn you gotta pull the tank, unless you cut a hole where your subwoofer hole is. I suppose you might be able to do it in situ with a very outlandish array of socket adapters etc but the risk of dropping one... eurgh.
      I've been watching videos on this all day and people doing this on the convertible keep saying things like "oh god how will i get my hands in there" "why did they design it this way" and my personal favourite "oh god I really don't want to do this".
      A code P1646 has me going down this rabbit hole lol.

      @throwback19841 hi buddy, food to hear from you. That's a shame that you have to remove the tank on the convertible, makes it a bit more long winded than in the coupe then.

    Hi, did you undo the fuel pump hose clamp and the 10 mm screw from the subwoofer hole or the trunk? I have that hole too but I don’t my arm is long enough to reach things in the tank from there. Thanks.

    • @projectsinthebarn
      @projectsinthebarn  2 місяці тому

      Hi Jay, if I recall, I did it all from the subwoofer hole. It took a bit of patience, and you're working blind pretty much, but if you can reach it, then it's all do-able, buddy.

    Don't know if anyone else mentioned it but the new filter is higher than the old one and not sitting in the recess. Could be a problem when the fuel level drops. PS, appy days, do you watch arry the stag😁

    • @projectsinthebarn
      @projectsinthebarn  2 роки тому +2

      Hi buddy, you are right, there is a slight variation between the factory filter and the after market one, but all being well it should not have an impact as long as I don't run the tank right down.
      I've not heard of that other channel, I'll have to check it out buddy.

    Better to take out fuse than the battery. It is number 7.

    • @projectsinthebarn
      @projectsinthebarn  Рік тому

      Hi buddy, thanks for getting in touch and passing on your knowledge, it's much appreciated.
      The main reason I removed the battery lead was to stop and possible risk of it sparking whilst I had the fuel tank open and petrol fumes and vapour in the air. Probably a bit overkill, but better safe than sorry 👍

    My 99XKR has a dodgy fuel level sensor. Haven't figured out the problem or solution to it yet but suspect it is a bad earth. Don't know where the sensor is yet.

    hey guys ! do somebody know where I can find hose clips sitting under the tank ? I broke those when I took out the fuel tank on my xkr 2002. It is tiny small clips in stainless steel . New hoses cost about 150 Euro piece. ( one clip maybe 1 Euro) Anyone ?

      Hi Simon, your best bet here in the UK would be David manners group or SNG Barratt. Both of their websites are informative and have good search features so hopefully they will be able to assist you buddy.
      For second hand parts Auto Reserve Jaguar are a very good source of used parts.
      Please keep me informed as to how you get in buddy 👍
