This one really ended up being a multi-layered adventure - glad you got it all sorted. Really hope we'll get a closer look at that Citroën DS in the background! That's a cool car.
Great job wizard. I spotted the Citroën DS in the background which was an outstanding car 60 years ago by all its technology which most features are still in use in our modern cars through the massive use of electronics. I really hope we get a video with this vehicle. Good luck with it as even changing the spark plugs needs three different tools !!!
I've got a DS in the same colour scheme as that in the background. I restored it, including the hydraulics, over the last few years (rolling restoration). It's my every day car and I love it. Hoping to see this one featured soon.
I’ve seen it in the last few videos too. I’m guessing it’s a euro Asian bob car or Hoovie found something interesting lol Definitely waiting for the video.
I could see the blue Citroen DS "behind the scenes"... are you doing a video on it @Carwizard??!! Please do... It's still the best riding car on the planet...
Like others, I look forward to your featuring the Citroen Goddess. Be sure to cover all the unique features of this car that first saw the light of day in 1955! It was light years ahead of its time.
It was the first car to capture my imagination; I saw one with Quebec plates in a parking lot in Maine in the '70s and was fascinated to see the car appear to levitate before my eyes.
Never be in a hurry with recomissioning an old vehicle. The Late Brake Shows barn find episodes are great on this - I love how the go through and do stuff like show them disconnecting the fuel tank, blowing air through fuel lines, checking they can turn over the engine (top tip guys - if its a manual, put it in gear and just rock the car back and forth...) checking for spark, crank, fuel pump priming etc before finally trying a turnover, oil int eh cylinders if needed, etc etc. I got an XKR recently that had been sitting for 6 months and barely driven in 2 years. I've been taking my time but it has not been expensive getting it back on the road. Had an alignment issue and instead of splurging on new tires (the old ones were flat spotted) I started with an alignment, which didnt fix it, then realised the previous owner had the sgtaggered wheels on wrong... swapped them round, got a stock alignment, and everything was fine. The previous owner thought he needed a new steering rack. He'd been quoted so much money for all the little problems he gave up on the car. HJere I am only $500 bucks into it apart from the purchase price and its going great - just take time, diagnose thoroughly, get all the manufacturer documentation and you WILL have an easier time. LEarning how to read documentation really helps. Also - Im gonna say this for jaguar - their service manuals for this car are brilliant. Never seen a better illustrated/described set of procedures before on any other car. Toyota/Lexus is a mess in comparison, which is saying something. These really are cars that a home mechanic with good reading comprehension can look after themselves relatively inexpensively. The previous owner has been talking to me and he is really pleased Im enjoying the car and fixing all the little problems myself that he could not, and he's not left hating jaguar for costing him 10 grand. One example - fixing the failed electric headrests on these cars is actually a SUPER easy job, its just fiddly and time consuming. You wont have change from $500 for getting a mechanic/dealer to do it because its a good 2-3 hours labor. But if you don't mind cracking a beer and pulling the seat covers yourself, you can fix it with an exacto knife and a pair of pliers.
Wizard was t alking about a Jag, and said"it's real simple" Sometimes, rarely, it is My 1970 XJ6 with 2 fuel tanks developed a leak. To access it, you remove a panel under tje bumper held on with large philip scews. They came right out. The fuel tank was not rusted and still had facory paint. A metal line/tube ran from the tank, inside to the fuel pump. It had a pin hole. I removed it and it looked familiar. I matched it to a generic brake line and it had the same thresda and diameter. I cut it to length and slipped on the fuel ine. All was well. My XJS didn't have a 12 cylinder Lucas distributor cap, it was Marelli.
Many years ago my dad treated himself to a 2001 XKR, approved used vehicle and it was beautiful and rapid, but ...he worked away a lot at that time so I used it regularly and my word we got our use out the warranty, multiple sets of CATS shocks due to knocking, several sets of front end bushes until they sprung for poly bushes which was a huge improvement, rattly window regulators, dash went crazy from time to time, over voltage etc. Beautiful cars but he had a BMW 7 series v12 afterwards and even that was less problematic.
I bought a NEW XK8 back in 1997 and loved it. Sold it three trouble-free years later. Every now and then I get nostalgic and think about getting another XK despite the fact the newest ones out there are pushing 10 years old. So I go to this video every time I'm tempted, and it snaps me right out of it.
Car Wizard is a genius , of that there is no doubt. I also have an XKR - 01Jaguar which , prior to it being purchased by myself was destined to be scrapped , for similar obstacles confronted by the Wizard . Jaguar only know how to make panels , seats , dashboards and how to make the wheels rotate fast (although not for very long) Jaguar makes no money from the sale of new cars , it's all in the service and parts. My Jaguar has had major heart surgery , no computers, sensors on sensors and all the other B/S/ , it's an entirely mechanical fuel system , it has a six cylinder Perkins diesel coupled to an Isuzu Amigo gearbox with a Toyota 70 series differential . It just about to turn the odometer over to 1.3 million miles , it does not smoke the tires at the traffic lights but sits on 70 mph all day (and night). I rest my case. I still think the car wizard is a genius ( a genius businessman who does not suggest every alternative , only ones supplying and fitting genuine parts or their equivalent ) But that's what makes America Great isn't it . Isn't it ? Goes without saying the engine has been deleted of ALL emissions controls i.e. catalytic converter removed , diesel particulate filter, exhaust gas return is now a tube directly to the road , but wait , there's a problem , this car is going to outlive everyone !!!!
There is a place in Canada that can legally change the odometer. You have to have alot of paperwork to prove the cars milage and they will set your new cluster milage to match the car.
IMO, just swapping the cluster to one with a different mileage should be illegal. What if the car had 150k miles and they just dropped in that used one showing 100k miles? How is that legal?
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH Well does one scrap a good car because the cluster took one for the team. Not sure about Jags but I'm pretty sure any non-dollar store OBD scan tool will show the real milage on the ECM.
There are companies all over that can change an odometer legally. The alternative (in NY) is a handwritten sticker from the mechanic on the door jamb, listing the old mileage and replacement cluster mileage. Good luck trading that car in at a dealer. My employers would look at a car like that as a TMU True Mileage Unknown.
I loved my XKR (2002 model year). It was reasonable bullet proof mechanically but rot got it in the end and it failed it's MOT (road safety/worthiness certificate in UK), due to corrosion in the floor which was un-economical to repair. I still miss it but have moved on. Hopfully when you're done, it'll give the owner many more years of happy ownership. Thanks for sharing.
3 years ago I bought a 1999 Jaguar XK8. It was relatively cheap at 10 grand. That is when I truly discovered the old adage that 'there's no such thing as a cheap old Jag'. I had to spend $2000 in repairs just to get it safetied.. 4 bearings and a couple of other things. Then it went for engine work to get the timing belt changed. That, along with some other engine work came to $7000. Once that was all done the car ran great and I was happy with my purchase despite the extra $9k I.had to put into it to have it run well.........then we were driving home one evening a month later and the transmission blew. So now I.was almost $20k into a brick sitting in my driveway. So I bit the bullet and had it changed for a rebuilt transmission for $4500 installed. Yup...I am almost $25k in to a $10k 24 year old luxury convertible that I can never get my money back on....so I'll.keep her forever and love her for who she is. 😁
There is no timing belt on the engine, only a serpentine belt. The XK that came after this model is a whole lot better, and has an aluminium body shell too !
3 years ago a 99 XK8 could be had down here in TX for like $3K lol wtf sounds like they took you to the cleaners and back!! Also, these cars don't even have timing belts, they have chains....sounds like the repair shop took you for a ride mate..
Makes me love my 1992-1997 F-Series trucks. You can change the dash cluster out all day long, as the odometer section is removable from the rest of the cluster. If you don't have a factory tachometer, just buy a cluster with one, put the odometer center section back in, and BOOM! It works perfectly, as all the trucks and Broncos were pre wired for a tach regardless if your truck was optioned with one.
Good reminder for cars that have sat. And in New England, add the brake lines to the list. The weather here makes them corrode pretty quickly if you're not driving around to dry them off.
Not true at all. Not true at all. I was given a 2001 Corolla that had sat in a barn for over ten years. I replaced the brake lines, flushed all the coolant, oil, replaced the fuel pump. It had 60k miles on it. It’s still running today 😂
Car Wizard! You're almost at 1 million subscribers! Wow! I remember when you just started this channel years ago. Glad to see you and Mrs. Wizard are doing so well on the platform
My step-dad bought a chocolate-brown 1972 E-type brand new. The first two years he owned it, it was great. Took it on road trips, so real driving, not just blats around the block. But after that first two years, it was a constant stream of things going wrong and the car was in the shop more often then out. The mechanic finally told him that he could replace absolutely every part in the car and it would still be back in the shop within months. By '76, the car was gone. Let's just say Jaguar has some rough spots in its history when it comes to reliability. So this video? No surprise.
The stepper motor broke in those cluster, because I had a 2003 GMC Envoy and the Speedometer Stepper Motor broke and I had it replace with a local Speedometer Shop and it worked ever since.
Nice job of diagnosis and repair, you're truly a Wizard. Very satisfying when you have positive results, and can deliver. Your customer's a lucky guy. Kool vid.
Man wizard you aint kidding, im resurrecting a 78 Lincoln Mark V that sat since 2001, and you would be amazed at the things that went bad and rotted out!! the intake gaskets rusted out and were dumping coolant into the oil! Also had to replace the ENTIRE fuel system, tank/lines/pump. somehow the carburetor still works. LOL
They are stunning cars. I used to work in offices in the year 1999 as a games coder - over looking and right next to a Jag dealership. They had these parked outside and in their fancy glass walled showrooms. They still look just as stunning and futuristic today! Today I regularly pass a house with one often seen parked on the drive.

On your 380SL, I had the same problem with my 350L. I turned out to be the emc unit that controlled ignition. I fixed it bypassing the emc and installing electronic ignition, Ana a new coil.. good luck
I truly wish you were located in NJ. Thankfully nothing is wrong with my car but if something ever came up and you were in NJ, INSTANTLY I would call you up. Great work, keep it up!
The way around the wrong milage is just to document it in the service paperwork, over here it's just what you do, Love the DS in the background big man, hope to see a video on that soon, Rj in Oz
Love that Citroën DS in the background, riding in style. If I remember right it had a foot knob for the gas. Ride height adjusting, just riding on a cloud. Front wheel driven and way ahead of its time.
@@salvadorpalma8173 don't let the fact there are plenty of XK/XKRs for sale in the UK with over 126,000 miles get between an idiot and their ill informed opinion.
In NY, there are certified companies that will change odometer readings legally. You need a notarized statement of true mileage, service records and a carfax. Otherwise, you need a DMV form and a hand written sticker on the door jamb with the old cluster's mileage, and replacement's mileage when installed. If it's a nice car or fairly new car, that sticker will seriously diminish a car's value. Especially if you're looking to trade it in at a dealer. Working at Ford back in the early 2000s, we sent out quite a few units for adjustment.
The Cluster for supercharged cars is unique because it it says, "Supercharged" under RPM on the Tach, but only during day time. It's not illuminated like everything else in the cluster. You can check with your local DMV about changing the mileage. In California once it's 20 years old you no longer have to report mileage to the DMV when a vehicle is sold, so they don't care what odometer reads. Not sure about other states. Carfax, service history and condition tell you what the milage in anyway.
What's that blue thing lurking in the background...? Why it's a Citroen DS, and it looks really sweet! Now there's a car I'd very much would like to see you and Mrs Wizard do a video about, they are so different from anything else on the road. It's amazing to me that they were made as early as 1955...
That Citroen DS... When it was first launched way back when, someone said that Norwegian road authorities should never be allowed to drive one, as they would use it as an excuse not to mend all the pot holes.
Just replaced the ABS (2nd hand, same model, no coding needed) on my Z4 E89. Started with no start, replaced the fob reader. Whilst waiting for that condensation formed in car, it ran to brake light switch, which blew, taking out the ABS unit. Only took me 6 weeks to work out what was going on, including a faulty aftermarket brake light switch, great.
When i worked at the salvage the joke was "all jags are low miles. " In the 60's my triumph cycle had lucas electrics, "We called lucas the "Prince of darkness". If i was young i'd specialize in Land Rover, with emphasis on electrics. Folks love them. Ever seen one correctly working? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
You would have to get a certified odometer statement from your local dmv in order for your friend to be able to legally correct the mileage on that gauge cluster. I think the correct mileage is stored in the ECU on most cars. Not sure about Jaguars but I believe that is the case with most vehicles.
Done both o2 sensors on mine, managed to clean my fuel sender unit and it’s been fine since. Crazy idea by Jaguar trigger the check engine light of the fuel sender is open circuit after two starts. It’s the solder joint on the pump circuit on the ABS board done that too 😂
Boy I understand you trying and explaining the issue with getting it running and find more and more issues yes these new computer systems are nice as long as you keep the vehicles up but if you ever that wants it if the mice don’t do damage which I’ve had that happen and two things are build a nest in there which creates problems, but also because of like you said, they had to know if you sitting in Townsend oh man, I pity, but I enjoyed your videos very much Wizz ! Thanks fro the show and showing people what they get if they buy are have something that has sit for sometime Thanks again !
Grew up with Austin Morris etc. Lucas issues are 90% the connectors. If you clean them off that fixes most all the problems. They used cheap and nasty metal and poor design on those bullet connectors and multi plugs. Once clean it’s a good idea to seal them with liquid electric tape or such. I used Starbrite.
It’s super rare to find an S type r in low mileage, and 05 and up. Usually I just find 03 ones with high mileage. Plus, so many s types have hidden accidents and damage that dealerships hide to screw you over
Spotted the Citroën in the background. Hopefully a video coming soon on that one. A little history: Charles de Gaulle survived an assassination attempt while riding in a Citroën. Riddled with bullets from machine gun fire, the car was able to escape at full speed on two wheels.
A wizard I've heard about some European scanners, Carly Specifically, that check all of the modules and compare them all to make sure that nothing's been messed with tampered with.
Lovely cars, bag of issues I've abandoned my 97 XK8, its very easy to spend more on the car than its worth. A friend has a 2001 X100 same story, they're not hard to work on, not just worth the spend
I'm glad my XKR is so flawless. If it ever develops a major issue, I'll have to get it to the Car Wiz to fix. As for the final comment: I think the dudes who say 'Alpha Romero' are the same ones who say 'Jag-wire'. Obviously, the former are fans of the classic horror film director, George Romero.
Odometer changes are only illegal if it's done with the intent to defraud. If you know how to make it right for the customer, you're good as long as it's actual miles.
Hey wizard I get the drift that apparently you fixed the cluster and several other issues showed up! Just checking you only mentioned it 10 times were all not stupid you know🙃
I remember 30 years ago UK 2nd hand car dealers put stickers on speedo's not guaranteeing the mileage. My father and i looking, just walked away. Not sure if any of them sold a car.
Hey Car Wizard, I’m in a pickle and I trust your advice, I’m looking for a first vehicle, and I need something safe and reliable, but I hate sedans and small cars, so I was at the 1995-99 Chevy Tahoes with the 350/5.7 V8, but with your video with the what era of Chevy trucks to buy, that era sounded like it’s junk. With the 1st gen Vortecs

Solder cracking the wonders of Lead free solder! Great!!
On your 380SL, I had the same problem with my 350L. I turned out to be the emc unit that controlled ignition. I fixed it bypassing the emc and installing electronic ignition, Ana a new coil.. good luck
I got respect for you since you tackled that dam caddy.
Greetings Wizard & Mrs Wizard, thanks for sharing the latest adventure with this beautiful Jaguar!!! Stay warm!! 👍👍🙂
I truly wish you were located in NJ. Thankfully nothing is wrong with my car but if something ever came up and you were in NJ, INSTANTLY I would call you up. Great work, keep it up!
Show us the Citroen DS too!!! That car is truly iconic!!!
Glad to see Car Wizard on this channel. He’s really cool on Motor Trend “Car Issues” 👍🏻
These are beautiful cars, and you can get a good price on them used, but I would be really afraid of the maintenance cost
Smart people get rid of them the second they are out of warranty.
There's a reason they are cheap.
@@johnjubie7144 I was just commenting how in Europe they sell for a couple k euros. You never see a single one above 200k kms.
thanks wizzard! for confirming what I already believed (No Jags for me)!
Working at Ford back in the early 2000s, we sent out quite a few units for adjustment.
the wizard does love a jag,me too.
Very distracted by the Citroen DS in the background, hope to learn more.
A must-watch for anyone wanting to buy a Summer/weekend car. Negotiate it down if it's been sitting for 2+ years.
I got a cluster with a lower mileage than my count, then got a guy to flash it to match the reading in the ECU.
love your video's. always know when to press stop "if your curious what sort tools" stop.
Glad the owner kept at it...tough to leave a Jag on the battle field.
But if a new ECU's also installed, wouldn't the new stored mileage then be zero?
Oh That Citroen in the backgroud. What a beauty.
Done both o2 sensors on mine, managed to clean my fuel sender unit and it’s been fine since. Crazy idea by Jaguar trigger the check engine light of the fuel sender is open circuit after two starts. It’s the solder joint on the pump circuit on the ABS board done that too 😂
uhh, Wizard? There's an 'R' in Alfa Romeo, but only one.
I really love the Jaguar design of the '90s, it's unfortunate to see so many problems with them...
Keep the videos going one of the best on UA-cam
The S Type R was a dream car for me in high school , my first car I bought in 2005 was a X type Sport , wasn't the best but I loved it
Fake jag 😂
It’s super rare to find an S type r in low mileage, and 05 and up. Usually I just find 03 ones with high mileage. Plus, so many s types have hidden accidents and damage that dealerships hide to screw you over
@@samholdsworth420 fake brain.
Love my Fluke meter. I still have mine from college and back then they were made in the US. 30+ years later still running strong
Awesome video and thank you for being so detailed in your description of the issues.
Spotted the Citroën in the background. Hopefully a video coming soon on that one. A little history: Charles de Gaulle survived an assassination attempt while riding in a Citroën. Riddled with bullets from machine gun fire, the car was able to escape at full speed on two wheels.
Ironically, the replacement cluster revealed a different kinda cluster 😂
Dad used to say "Engines want to run, not sit", Same for electronics, in my experience.
Nice Mercedes S600 and Citroen DS in back of you!
Everyone gather round, car wizard uploaded a new video!!!
That Citroen DS in the background looks interesting. Good luck with that one!
A wizard I've heard about some European scanners, Carly Specifically, that check all of the modules and compare them all to make sure that nothing's been messed with tampered with.
Thank you Wizard and Mrs. Love the channel, like 2Vintage channel, always a learning moment
There is no 'ph' in ALFA.
Citroen!! I really hope we are blessed with a video from you on it!
Put Techron on the resistor contacts. Many gages circa 2000+/- oxidized and Techron fixed it. Must use semi regularly.
Stabilant, It's been a long time since I heard this name, glad to see that they're still in business.
Nice citroen behind :)
Car Wizard, there is no way this jaguar's story is about to end, I am willing to bet.
Odometer changes are only illegal if it's done with the intent to defraud. If you know how to make it right for the customer, you're good as long as it's actual miles.
Nice to see the SS silverado in the background still, i'm eager to hear your plans for it
Great video as always. I love the 66 Chevelle that sits and watches all.
No check engine. Tell the customer to trade it in on a Camaro ASAP. lol
Hey wizard I get the drift that apparently you fixed the cluster and several other issues showed up! Just checking you only mentioned it 10 times were all not stupid you know🙃
If it hasn't been done, change the plastic thermostat housing for the uprated metal one.
Want a video on the old "Pallas" DS Citroen behind you!!!!!!
So how is the camper bus coming along?? Ready for the coming camping season??
Looking forward to the DS video, I might get a CX 25 soon.
I can't wait to see the video on that Blue Citroen!
DS in the back ground can’t be many of them in the US.
I like the DS-10 in the background
Can't wait to see the Citroen!
Documentation on the replacement cluster can add value to the car
NO Lucas in the DS :-) Do tell us the story - wonderful vehicle.
