Hit thumbs up if Neil Peart is the best percussionist / drummer and lyriscist ever held a pair of drum sticks and sat behind a drum kit. And yes, that drum kit has gold inlays. RIP Neil Peart. -Rush for life!

People have been saying that since back in the 1980s. It’s true. If you were to ask every favorite drummer in every famous band 99.9% of them sight Neil Peart as their favorite drummer. About 75% of them will say that it was Peart that inspired them to take up the drums. Everyone from Dave Grohl, Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Taylor Hawkins and many, many others have said so.
I’m a guitarist and have been playing in bands and recording studios since the 1980s and every drummer I ever met was a massive Peart fan and it seemed that the better the drummer was, the more into Neil they were. Even very young drummers of UA-cam, like Avery Molek and Jonah Rocks are all huge Peart fans also.
Many of those kids have been covering Peart’s drumming and up,loading videos since they were 6 years old. Some of their videos are jaw dropping. Just seeing how good a six or eight year old drummer can be.

The Drum Master- Drumming has the power to unite people, no matter how varied their language or cultural background might be. On a recent trek through Africa, Neil Peart had a singular experience that proved just that. "I was in Gambia, walking through a small village, and I heard the sound of a drum. So of course I was curious! I looked into a compound and I could hear the drumming coming from a curtained room. I walked up to a woman doing laundry in front of the room. She could see my interest in the sound, so she waved me to go in. Inside I found a young, white missionary from a nearby Catholic school. Sitting across from him was the commanding presence of the local drum master. He was attempting to show the missionary how to play any kind of beat. The missionary was trying as hard as he could, but he wasn't having a lot of success."
After a time the drum master, frustrated by the missionary's lack of ability, noticed the other man who had come into the room. The master had no idea who this person was, but he thought to himself, "Why not see if he can play?" According to Peart, what happened next was fascinating. "The drum master gestured to me to try and play a rhythm. So we began playing together, and he started smiling because he could tell I had a rhythm - maybe not his rhythm, but a rhythm of some kind. We were playing and playing, building the intensity, and little kids started coming in, laughing at the white man playing drums. Then a few women came into the room, and everybody began dancing to our beat! The master and I even started trading fours. It wasn't a spoken thing, but he could tell that I would lay out and listen to what he was doing for a certain amount of time, and then he would do the same. It was just a magical moment." When they finished, a confused and startled missionary ran up to Peart and asked, "How can you do that?" Chuckling to himself, Neil politely responded, "I'm in the business."

Saw them actually two times here in Germany. Saw ths solo too in Oberhausen. Just awesome. The professor was a very unique person who suffered big losses in his life. He was always NOT into interviews and let that to Geddy and Alex. That was however not against fans or admirers, he just didn't like that and said something like : It's ok when fans admire me, but I dont like them running around me and cheer etc. He was one of the best drummers ever and the Lyrics he wrote were just outstanding. He was a poet! R.I.P Neil. You will always be remembered!

  • @RaymondBCrisp
    @RaymondBCrisp 4 роки тому +21

Just some general info, Neil is in his late 50's when he performed this. He starts out playing the electronic portion of the kit (one with the small base drum). When the kit rotates, he switches to his acoustic set. I have to comment on your comment about him playing all the drums, that they weren't just props. Funny you should mention that, because I went to a Dream Theater concert way back when, where Fates Warning was opening for them. The Fates Warning drummer had this huge kit like Neil, but when FW was finished with their set, before the roadies could come in and tear it down, Portnoy of DT walked down to the stage and I kid you not took out a handkerchief and started dusting off Fates Warning drummer's cymbals, cause dude didn't touch them! LMAO!!! I think my friends and I laughed all the way home because of that. Hell, I'm STILL laughing!
Thanks a lot for reacting! I really enjoyed watching your appreciation of The Professor doing what he did so well.

Neil essentially had two drum sets in one kit: A digital drum set with which he could trigger different sounds and events like the rotating stage, and an acoustic side that he goes to in the second third of the drum solo. And you’ll also notice that Neil does several little mini sets with slightly different styles. At one point he even changes his grip to a more traditional side grip rather than the matchstick grips that he normally used.

I just happened upon this video and would like to say how refreshing it is to see younger people still enjoy the boys. I have been an avid concert fan of RUSH since I attended the show in Toronto (June 1976) that was recorded and released as 'All the World's a Stage' album. I have been a fan since Working Man released in '74 and loved 2112 even more. I have seen them more than most, but less than many others with 11 shows under my belt. The last was R40 in Buffalo New York and it was a real treat since our son actually took us to see them. Over the 50+ years of concert-going and over the 500+ concerts from over 100 bands, this man was by and far the best drummer to ever take the stage. it is just that plain and simple. We will miss him for years and my thoughts and prayers still go out to the boys, their families, and to RUCH fans everywhere.

Don't you feel privileged that you used to like the sound of Rush back in the 70s & now they contain probably one of the best percussionists ever, one of the best bass players left alive, & a really shit hot lead guitarist. Thanks dudes xx

He was my inspiration growing up along with John Bonham. My favorite current drummers are Mike Mangini and Mike Portnoy both have played or are playing with Dream Theater. Neil is the one who really showed me that drummers don't have to sit in the background and keep a beat; they could also be musical. He also inspired me to write lyrics as well and I have for 3 albums of the five I have recorded.

His nickname, as you can imagine, is "the professor" for obvious reasons. So glad you guys enjoy his level of musicianship. Like you said if he's not your favorite drummer, he's your favorite drummer's favor drummer. Neil is the GOAT. Always will be...

Both of your faces made my night! *RUSH RULES*
    💜💫✌🎵
    RIP Neil Peart 1952-2020
💥THE GIRL WHO LISTENED TO RUSH💥
From the back of the stadium
    She’s easy to see
    Standing up at the stage
    In her Starman tee
    From Anthem to Limelight
    To YYZ
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
    And all of the rockers
    And all of the heshers
Well they dreamed of the day
    That they might get her
    And drive her away
    In a Red Barchetta
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
    Philosophers and ploughmen
    They can’t resist her call
    They cannot choose
    Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
    They've gotta love her
    No she doesn’t say "Pert"
    And she doesn’t say "Part"
Yeah, she knows it’s "Neil Peert"
‘Cause he’s close to her heart
Say a prayer for John Rutsey
He was there at the start
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
    Philosophers and ploughmen
    They can’t resist her call
    They cannot choose
    Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
    They've gotta love her
Why don’t girls ever listen to Rush?
    But she listened to Rush!
    The blacksmith and the artist
    They can’t resist her call
    You cannot choose
    Not to decide
So you’ve got no choice at all
No you’ve got no choice at all
    You’ve gotta love her

So happy to see you’ve boarded the Rush train! As I hope you’re starting to discover, this band and it’s incredible music have a way of bridging all the things that separate us.
Oh and on another note, I’ve listened to a few of YOUR songs and really dig your sound!

Bye far he is one of the best drummers that I have seen many times he is truely missed. Wished that you have seen him live each show that I've seen since the early 80s just got better an better. His whole kit he has what he calls his electric or techno sound then his standard percussion or better know as rock percussion R.I.P. NEIL PEART

That instrument he is playing is technically called a percussion controller. It’s a synthesizer for drummers that you play like a xylophone. Since it’s a synth controller you can make it sound like anything you want. In this solo he has a marimba or xylophone patch loaded (those instruments have wooden keys), and I believe he triggers the gong sound at the end on it. His drum kit has a number of electronic “pads” that have programmable sounds. Some of them look like drums, some are the black cymbals, and he has foot triggers, too. Kinda like Guitar Hero drum pads, but professional-grade. He is actually triggering the horn sounds at the end with various pads and pedals. The only pre-recorded loop was the jazz song at the very end. In the early days Neil used a real glockenspiel, but the versatility of the programmable pads teplaved it with this thing in the early 80’s.

Neil Peart was very much a philosopher, a deep thinker, with an eloquent way of expressing his musings about the world. I know he was very self-critical of his art and expected a lot from himself, but let's face it, his worse day drumming is leaps and bounds better than anyone else's best day. So sad he has left us but very grateful we have his musical legacy to admire and enjoy.

I can't believe every time I watch someone react to this video no one catches it when he plays chopsticks on the cow bells. Intentionally put into his solo as a representation of the basic fundamentals of when a musician first starts out playing music. Which is ironic and humorous considering all the other things he does in this solo. He was the best!!!

Hi. Sub here, don't interact a lot but you aroused me here. I watched your react to Xanadu, and thought to myself, I should send a link for this solo, but as I was thinking that, this popped up. I mean you gotta be quick in this digital age eh? I grew up with Rush and I waited until you said the magic words in the Xanadu reaction, which were, these guys are 3 pc! So much sound. And maybe nobody's mentioned this but Neal wrote most of the lyrics. His death hit me harder than most, sort of inured to it, so many greats have moved on already, but as a drummer...yeah, one of my top 10's all time. I subscribed because I'm a Nightwish fan, and I've really enjoyed your reactions, and I've checked out some of your music, which I've enjoyed also. Keep on rockin'!

Everyone will direct you towards Frankfurt, but that was just the best video capture of Neils drum solo. Truth is he put on this sort of show each and every performance. I saw them in Tampa and it was arguably just as good if not better! (Maybe it's just because I was there tho)

Great reaction to the greatest!!!! Although many people saw Rush WAY more times than I did, I was fortunate to see them 12 times and got approved to photograph them live in concert for a magazine 3 times. If you want to see another amazing Neil video, go to Vertical Horizon's "Instamatic". It's Neil laying down the drum track along with entire song in the studio!!!! It's a great song, and another fantastic live look at his greatness!!

Though I play the guitar now, Neil Peart was the reason I picked up sticks in my teens (early 80's). Most great drummer in the modern era will reference Peart as an influence. There are many great drummers and then there's Peart, just my opinion.

A couple things. Towards the middle, with the bass and bells doing the ‘boom-Ching-ching’ his feet are playing in 3/4 while his hands are still playing 4/4. Also, right after that, he switches up how he holds his drum sticks from the usual grip to the more traditional grip (left hand reversed) then changes back again. He’s also making every sound you’re hearing except for the roar of the crowd. Even the big band swing at the end his triggered by him with foot pedals.

I stood behind his riser in Toronto about 15 feet away, he is a magician. One thing though, for his 30 foot high drum stick throws he does miss but grabs another stick so quick that you don’t see it.

Kudos 👍. Never thought you'd get to a pure insanity instrumental/solo. Rush was one of the first and finest important trios from Canada to impact my ears. I never knew they were Canadian or a trio. Geddy Lee, the bass guitar player, also played the keyboards. May Eddie Van Halen and Neil Peart jam for God in Heaven for Eternity until the day Robert Plant and Jimmy Page join them 😮 and what a super group that will be.
