RIP. Was never a fan of the drums he used on the Vapor Trails tour. Well I’ve really like DW drums anyway, so yeah. They don’t even sound like drums they sound like timbales and they are very boingy, which is not what I want in terms of tone.

They didn't just use a washing machine on stage. they've also had popcorn machine and a chicken rotesserie.
The dryers had concert shirts in them that the band would throw into the audience. Genius.
The shirts would say “from dryer #1” and “from dryer #2”

What always amazes me about rush is there are only 3 band members and they sound like that... Incredible
As incredibly talented and successful as this band became, they always stayed three nice boys; gentlemen. And yes, it’s just another reason why we love them. Solid, loyal people, an incredible four+ decade friendship among the three and I can promise, Geddy and Alex, if they ever play again, will never call or bill themselves as Rush. EVER!
I just said the same thing about Geddy and Alex playing also. As much as I would love to see them perform together again, I'm not sure I could emotionally handle them playing any Rush songs ... I can't imagine what that would do for them. But yes totally agree with your statement. Rush definitely ended with Neil's passing. Sniff sniff
I absolutely adore the fact that Rush was NEVER "cool". Cool changes from minute to minute. They just busted in with gigantic musicianship, left it at that, and said "Accept it or not. You will be poorer if you do not."

Geddys mother was a Holocaust survivor. He is a very humble person to have as much talent as he does.
This was a huge benefit for the city of Toronto that was actually put on by the Rolling Stones when the city was hit by Sars The Stones were the last act hence the Painted Black tribute at the start of the song. I saw an interview with Neil Peart that at this concert just before they were going on Charlie Watts the drummer from the Stones came up to Neil and introduced himself and then said I am going to be watching you! One of your influencers watching you from the side of the stage.
The dryers are a bit of a joke as Geddy starting running his sound differently and did not need a stack of amps behind him. Alex still keep his so they used dryers to balance out the stage amongst other things. They would have tee shirts in them that would be tossed out to the crowd. Other things they used were rotisserie with roasting chickens, vending and popcorn machines. 😃
I would suggest reacting to Dinner with Rush. It is later in their career and they are having dinner with a whole lot of wine and the jokes keep on coming. You will see how close even after 40 years of working together they were.
Also, I would suggest watching Rush Beyond the Lighted Stage.
A fabulous documentary on how they got started and it will give a real insight into not only them but how the music industry worked back then Cheers

The choice of washing machines was a sarcastic response to one critic who said he’d rather watch laundry then listen to a Rush concert. So…Rush obliged.

Great reaction! Those dryers actually worked (no heat of course) and they were full of balls of Rush t-shirts!! At the end of the show Alex and Geddy would throw them into the crowd!!! These 3 guys never lost sense of their family roots or their country!! They make me proud to be Canadian 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦😁😁

Wasn't expecting the Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones cover intro that was pretty dope. They put out a powerful sound for a three man band
There are so many rock bands that have an aggressive or miserable image on stage, but rush are always smiling and enjoying themselves even when the subject is serious. This is what lifts people's spirit and this is why rush stand out and are so popular.
How good is Rush? The effortlessly switching from heavy rock to reggae and back a couple of times without batting an eyelid... That's how good!
That was agreat show had the pleasure of being there live. Great line-up Rush, ACDC and the Stones performed that day. The "Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto" was a benefit rock concert that was held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada back in 2003. It was also known as "Toronto Rocks", "Stars 4 SARS", "SARSStock", "SARSfest" and "SARS-a-palooza". You can watch the whole live show on You Tube I beleive.

Neil is the primary lyric writer for RUSH as well. This song came about while he driving & seeing the beautiful lights of the city while listening to the radio.

There is a Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City which has a Geddy Lee exhibit in it. Geddy is a huge baseball fan and he bought a collection of 400 baseballs that were autographed by Negro League players and he donated them to the museum. A very cool gesture, indeed. He also owns a baseball that is signed by all of the modern day MLB players with 3,000 hits or more. As far as Rush being able to do whatever they want musically, check out the song 2112. It is long, but it shows they can do whatever they want musically. The song covers the gamut from harsh hard rock to mellow acoustic vibes. It's brilliant.
RUSH is probably 1 of the most under rated bands. Also as musicians. They're all masters of their instruments. And Neil Peart is Drum God. Never has or will be anybody better. RIP NEIL PEART.

Geddy Lee had things like Washers/Dryers or things like literal rotisserie ovens on his side to fill up the stage because of the towers of speakers that Alex used...
yeah he would do that and have like vending machines and all kinds of fun stuff. So many focus on how technical their music is and sometimes forget how Rush's sense of humor was just as important as their music..
@@ryant3600 yea, I was lucky, I got to see them live for their Snakes and Arrows tour ( for my show they played all of hemispheres for the first time since the original tour) and the Time Machine tour.... they amount of fun that I had will never be beat by any other band. For anyone who hasn't seen it, look up South Park RUSH skit it is short but great and seeing it live had me laughing my ass off
@@JamesWilliams-yc3yd I took my then 13-year old son and one of his friends to the R30 tour and both my son and his friend have never let me forget how much they appreciate having had the privilege to see this legendary, classic rock band perform.

A 3 piece band with all that sound!!!
Another thing that makes this band simply the best, is that they never have taken themselves too seriously, the consistently pushed themselves artistically, even if it meant losing some fans. They put their music in front of everyone... That says alot about the integrity in their music. It's definitely one reason they have the loyal following they have. You will never meet a better group of people than their fans. We are all pretty amazing people. Lol
Cheers! Dinner with RUSH is one of my favorite videos of these guys. You watch them through the years and follow them, they're having a blast every single time they play together. Again cheers from a 54 year old Canadian RUSH fan. Be safe

Sad to ley you know that Geddy Lee's mom, Mary Weinrib passed away in July. She was a very strong person and important element of Geddy's life- without her there would have been no Rush!!
Strong? She survived the Holocaust! She was in Auschwitz and Belsen!
...and it was her pronunciation of his name "Garry" that gave us Geddy

Re: the bell part Neil's playing...back in the earlier days, he would've had an actual set of bells beside him...but here he's using a Mallet Kat which is a MIDI controller for mallet instruments (Kat is the company name so most of their product names end in Kat - right at 2:59 you can see the word "KAT" on the back of it)...think of it like electronic pads for mallet instruments.
They opened the song with a snippet of the Rolling Stones' Paint It Black. In fact, Rush released an entire EP of cover songs called Feedback. There are some live videos of the covers on UA-cam.
It’s called a mallet Kat. It’s a midi percussion instrument that can do any sound. Here it’s set as a glockenspiel.
Can you imagine how much peace we would have in the world if we could negotiate through music 🤔😉
Re: Dryers. At one point, because he was playing all the keyboard, foot pedals along with the bass, Geddy decided to go though the house with his sound and got rid of the his giant amp stack and speakers. Geddy, as a joke had the crew put the dryers behind him as a joke and to balance the stage. If you watch enough footage, tool you'll see all sorts of odd things there. Dryers, popcorn machines, rotisserie chicken ovens. The stage hands can be seen dressed up in all sorts of costumes coming out to do laundry, baste the chickens etc...
It became a huge joke between the band and fans to see what was next.
In other videos you might even see Alex Lifeson's Barbie collection of groupie fans all lined up on the stage in front of him.
During their Time Machine tour, I think that Geddy Lee had popcorn machines when they played in West Palm Beach. My friends and I seen RUSH there. They rocked the house for 3 and half hours that night!

There's a clip on youtube of Charlie Watts meeting Neil Peart before Rush went on. Neil was surprised & delighted with this & recalled that Charlie said to him "I'm going to watch you". Charlie must have been delighted with Rush's intro version of 'Paint it Black".

I saw them in 1978, at Bingley Hall, Stafford, England.
Rush was my first concert. the washer dryer…It’s actually on mic 🎤 to keep time and they have clean clothes for next show! So not hair band guys lol they are masters of the craft
they actually did throw the laundry into the crowd at one concert..it was Rush T shirts
The Stones were after them at this concert along with AC/DC they were standing on the sides watching Rush
playing "paint it black" before the ROLLING STONES were about to play on the same stage was pretty saucy but given the theme of the song it was actually a tribute-it s all about hearing different types of songs on the radio and being inspired
The Stones were actually the co-headliners, with AC/DC, and every band that came out did a Stones riff before going into their own song.
This concert is their home town Toronto, this song was about an alternative radio station in Toronto and how they decided who gets airplay and does not

The instrument Neil Peart is playing that sounds like a xylophone is actually a MalletKat, an electronic device that can be programmed with many sounds. He had gong sounds and tubular bells and whatnot programmed in it.

The whole opening was Paint It Black by the Rolling Stones. In an interview Geddy said he chose drying machines to replace his on-stage stacks (after he got rid of them) because he like their "warm, dry tone". LOL! But yeah he wanted a look on that side that wasn't empty.
Honestly this isn't Rush showing off. This is Rush putting on a show !

Washer and dryer on stage? Wait until you see a giant chicken come on stage to baste the chickens on the rotisserie while Rush performs. These guys were/are maestros, but never stopped having fun while performing.

The washers was just to fill the stage up,they put tour shirts in which they throw in the rowed to which have 2 of them one from dryer 1 and 2 both shirts signed by all 3 band members which are you most treasure possession, I also have 6 used drum sticks from neil which I go him to sign them,I have loved rush since 78
The most amusing concept about the washer and dryers, is when a roadie, while the group is playing, either pretends, or actually takes out the clothes in the dryer, add more from the washer, and then puts more in the washer. Just too funny, and they act oblivious to it all.

Alex Lifeson has a huge Marshall stack behind him so Geddy Lee felt his side of the stage was empty and added washers, dryers, actions figures and stuff to fill his side.

Thanks for the video RIP Neil Peart. Young kids now have no idea of how much radio was apart of our lives back in the 60's and 70's. Rush best Canadian rock band ever. Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s. The Toronto-based station CFNY-FM-which had not abandoned free-form programming-is cited as an inspiration for the song.
The bass bringing brought to the forefront as an equal to the lead guitar is one of the defining elements of Rush. Yes also did this with the pure genius of Chris Squire who could define a song.

I wanted to go but when the forecast was for 35 Celsius (nearly 100 Fahrenheit) I passed. Lots of people got heatstroke.

I know that this is a old video but I just came across it. They used the washer and dryer as a metronome. In some tours they were microphoned.
The song is actually a critique of the music industry and radio stations of how rigid and formatted it had become and how many bands are willing to water down or sell out to get airplay and sell album$. And what the previous person said about the amps. So with their quirky canadian sense of humor added washing machines lol to fill up space.

Think about that feeling when your favorite song comes on the radio. Yeah, it's also a slam on the music industry, but it is about the joy of music.
You'll see dryers, vending machines, rotisserie chicken machines and what not. I guess Alex still had his amps, but Geddy was using the stadium system. The powers that be didn't like how offset the stage looked and wanted amps on Geddy's side of the stage, but I guess he said NO. So it started with the dryers and all sorts of things 🤣
