I dreamt once that I met Taika Waititi on a bus, and I asked him to give me advice on writing and he said: you can't edit before you write it :O It was the best advice I was ever given. I would love to meet him just so I can tell him this. :P I know that he will not care, and I know that it was my brain that invented it. But still, it was so exciting!
THAT... is marvelous! "You can't edit before you write it" really speaks volumes to me. It's simple and profound at the same time, which is why this blows my mind! Thank you Ajnira's dream-Taika lol. And I think you're wrong about Taika not caring about it. I can't help but feel that he'll be honoured to be the figure that your brain chose to create to tell itself this awesome piece of advice lol
This guy is a creative powerhouse and beacon of positivity. A refreshing change from the usual stagnant, self-important director with a vision. He doesn't take himself seriously at all. All the outakes from his films, the entire crew looks like it's having a great time. He is like, Kubrik's opposite. Probabaly gets the shot in one take. :)
As someone who’s got a fairly late ADHD diagnoses I think armchair diagnosing someone with this hellish yet incredible disorder is almost impossible. However, after developing kind of a celebrity crush on Taika and watching more and more of his interviews I am willing to bet my first born child on the fact that this man has ADHD. I have never ever related to someone as much in my life - and that includes a lot of outspoken *diagnosed* people. His way of thoughtful emotional thinking but also absolute deadpan humor mixed with random anecdotes, losing his train of thought, randomly stimming and having the memory of a goldfish while being so passionate about creating is what has made my life so damn hard and yet beautiful for the past 19 years . I hope he knows the kind of inspiration he is for people of all backgrounds alike!
That last part about being interested in people resonated with me so much. I'm a street photographer and visual artist, I studied psychology at undergrad, minored in studio arts, and now doing my masters in neuroscience. I create stories and direct short films. I plan on studying medicine after my masters and continue with filmmaking as well. My friends would often joke about how i'm all over the place but honestly always told them they're all connected. I find all these facets rooted in that pure interest in people and human experience. Very refreshing video with really great insight from an organically creative person. Thanks for sharing

He is probably right about art and painting but my son passed away and he was a part time artist. I took up painting and it has helped me feel calm and some connection to my son. It is helping me heal, to be creative. I only give away my art. Most I have. I will never be famous or successful but success is measured in different ways for me
I’m glad painting has helped you connect with your son. If you didn’t know, Taika was a painter before he was a filmmaker. I think his comment isn’t about the medium but about what you’re talking about: how success is defined. In painting, galleries decide who’s a “successful” artist, whereas with film it’s different. We pay to see the movies and then can trash them or praise them. It’s a very different *commercial* metric for sure. But I agree with you. As an artist, success is defined in many different ways. I’m a musician, and for years my definition of being successful was simply that I be paid to play. Then COVID happened. I’m still a musician even though the gigs stopped. I wish you many comforting hours painting and creating.
I mean, it's kind of true. And many of the greatest directors had the same attitude. A good example would be Orson Welles while making Citizen Kane. He and his crew pioneered many new ways of filming and early special effects by basically "winging it".
Yes! Truth be told. Creativity is a messy process. Taika, you nailed it. Complacency is boring and predictable. The best creativity is unpredictable, like life.
