    I got to meet Taika at the season 1 What We Do in the Shadows FYC event, and my god, he is one of the kindest and most wonderful people I've ever met! I asked him for an autograph to give my friend who was in the hospital with a brain tumor and instead he grabs my phone and records a personal message to her. I bawled and he gave me a big hug. He's the real deal.

    He had me sold when he said "My job is not film-making. My job is to be creative. My job is to express myself and to share my ideas and my point of view.".
    This came off to be such a profound truth, and it's so universal if you think about it. Most of us spend our lives finding that perfect job, perfect title, that elusive thing called "calling" - and all that we should rather be doing is just be ourselves at whatever we do.

    Taika's ability to be so completely himself and to share that is something I deeply look up to.
    He's so wonderfully strange. The thing is, I think we all are deep down. We're just too afraid to be ourselves.

    I agree with how he presents creativity as a matter of perception and expression through the lens of obsession. If you can't become obsessed with your work, your passion won't come through, and you just won't grow as you would otherwise.

    • @Eowynnofrohan
      @Eowynnofrohan 5 років тому +6

      I just be obsessed with my idea for a story, I've been writing versions of it since 2011, sometimes the stories takes off, sometimes they turn into nothing and I start over again. I try to quit this idea but it won't let me go so maybe there is something to it? I hope. Not earned much from my self published books but ...money isn't my main goal... Tho it would be nice. Also I want to share my ideas but I can't when people don't read it :(

    • @devonseamoor
      @devonseamoor 4 роки тому +5

      I don't agree with the part called obsession. For that implies control, the wanting and force involved. Which is completely opposite of the true nature of creativity, as I perceive it. I myself would choose passion as the driving quality, for that's freedom of expression in a joyful manner. The best vitamin for my creativity.

    • @devonseamoor
      @devonseamoor 4 роки тому +5

      @@Eowynnofrohan I suggest to let go of your obsession and start writing a daily journal, just after you wake up. Write down whatever it is that comes to mind and, after a while, discover your imagination in your natural talent for writing down what is in resonance with your unique and authentic form.

      Through my 20's, 30's and 40's, I was on fire with multi-media creative inspiration and expression. Drawing, painting, textiles, Mixed media sculpture. It was unstoppable, I thought, until aging extinguished it. There's no forcing it to return. It used to be an effortless gift and joy. There's no filling the chasm left behind. This is too personal, but there it is.

    • @BriannaBanana1
      @BriannaBanana1 4 роки тому +173

      I have a feeling that upon hearing that, Taika would give you a pep talk about how great it is that you're here, and probably how he's had the same feeling at times in his own life. I feel that feeling a lot these days, but Taika also reminds me of myself in ways after watching this, with his inability to focus on just one creative outlet, and having a drive to express himself and his viewpoint through creativity, and getting obsessed with all kinds of things over the course of his life. When he was talking about his mom's cancer and how maybe doing a series of random bodily movements would keep him from getting cancer, that struck me as a very OCD sort of thing. I can relate to that. Maybe he was totally joking, or maybe he was poking fun at actually having OCD. Idk. Either way, Taika actually gives me hope for my professional future because he reminds me of myself in the ways I've mentioned, and has gotten as far as he has now. I used to compare myself to others a lot, but over the years, it's sunk in how unhelpful that is, and how miserable it can make you. I'm still tempted to do it, but when I feel myself sliding in that direction, I try to talk myself out of it and remind myself that it isn't going to help me. Just try to focus on being better than you were yesterday. That's been a more successful approach for me. I mean, I still get down when I feel I've stagnated, but you and I both also need to be kind to ourselves. Tearing ourselves down won't get us anywhere either.

    This has to be one of the most subtle, yet in-your-face creative assignment responses ever. Imagine this is your middle school project and you're given fairly free reign on a creative project. The sad thing is, most teachers I remember and have heard about from schools would still probably flunk him for 'not following directions'. Much different from other TED talks I've seen (not many, honestly) but I love it.

    Inspiration comes from an appreciation and understanding of art. Creativity comes from an internal uncontrollable need to create. You can’t necessarily “be” more creative but you can think more creatively. Just watch movies, shows, animes, animations, and short films. Look at comics, paintings drawings, and sculptures. Listen to music. Go on walks, watch people, listen to people.. really actually listen to people. Just observe the world that’s been there the whole time, you’ve just forgotten about it because you were too busy thinking about your own life.
    The world is an incredibly rich and beautiful place. You just gotta look at it... really actually just look at it. And the appreciation and everything else comes easily.
