The Thor movies were the worst of the MCU until this guy. Thor Ragnarok is up there with Captain America : Civil War. To be fair the writing was much better on Ragnarok too, so I'd split credit between the director and writers for pulling the Thor series from the bottom to the top.
People are getting so offended by the jokes in Ragnarok, saying that they "ruin the serious moments." I don't know if these people understand that this is almost the point of the movie. Something that I noticed about Watiti is that he constantly tries to take things that aren't supposed to be funny and make them funny. In Hunt for the Wilderpeople, for instance, one of the funniest scenes in the movie unfolds immediately after the saddest scene in the movie. I thought that it was so bold of him to bring this style of directing to a movie as big as Ragnarok. Odin's death and the destruction of Asgard are made comedic instead of taken seriously. Whether or not these jokes work or not is left up to the audience, but what is clear is that this is done with intent. He's trying to make the audience view these serious moments through a comedic lens, which is a very experimental decision for a blockbuster movie. In a world where superhero movies are becoming more and more safe and predictable, experimental movies like Thor Ragnarok should be appreciated instead of resented.
I'd disagree on Odin's death. It is met with silence, and then Thor's anger, and then Hela shows up. The next time it's referenced Thor is praying for him in the challenger's corridor. Odin's death is about the only thing this movie keeps grounded, and I love that!
The joke at the end with Asgard fell pretty flat for me. There were a bunch of times I felt like the comedy undercut the drama. Whether or not it's "the point", it was personally my biggest problem with the film.

I really like the James Gunn style of GOTG, really sad that he left. Waititi's movie has the sense of awkwardness and humor that suits Thor, the "king" of Asgard. Hope this style can br put on the guardians too but not sure if it's gonna work
This guy did the impossible, made me care about a Thor movie. It was there from the beginning at I at least didn't saw it, Thor is a silly character, the premise of this Norse Gods in a super hero setting is silly, trying to make them serious is why the previous Thor movies, especially the second one, didn't work. So far this one and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 are my favorite Marvel movies (and I'm a guy who loves dark, serious and gritty). Guardians 2 was just such a perfect comic book translation, the visuals where comic panels turned real. For some time in the past, before the whole MCU thing, super hero movies tended to be director driven, that's how we got Tim Burton's Batman, and they where nice when good, but abysmal when bad. Then the MCU came along and super hero movies went in the opposite direction, producer and narrative driven, which gave a nice sense of continuity and produced mostly passable to great stuff, but I think now things have gotten momentum, it's time to allow directors to drive their movies more, the roadmap is there, everybody knows the goals and the setting, let directors put more of them in the films (just stay away from directors who, while great, have TOO much of a voice, like Burton or Del Toro, although now that I'm thinking about it, a Del Toro Dr. Strange movie may actually be quite good, just give him a couple of villains he can make simpathetic and an assortment of critters and Del Toro'll work his magic).
Baalcebub I don’t understand why the concept of Thor is so silly for some people. I mean, the Norse themselves didn’t have any problem taking this stuff seriously. I thought the first Thor was fantastic. The second was bad because it was extremely formulaic and had the most uninteresting villain in MCU history. Personally, I much prefer a more serious tone for Thor movies, and I think the more lighthearted, unserious stuff should be reserved for Guardians of the Galaxy. Still, I must admit Waititi did a fantastic job.
uhlan30 I can only speak for myself. It's not the concept of the Norse gods or even specifically Thor that is silly, as mythology they are as serious and interesting as any other pantheon. The thing I find silly is the inclusion of mythological pantheons in Super Hero settings (any pantheon for that case, that also happens with the Greek pantheon in DC). I'm not entirely sure why I find it so silly, I think it may be the notion of a group of peoples calling themselves gods, particularly gods that only make sense from a Geocentric or Anthropocentric perspective (the god of thunder, the goddess of death), in a reality which has people with powers vastly superior to those gods, and also has aliens from vastly different civilizations which, one assumes, don't worship this or any other anthropomorphic gods. I can find some seriousness in a scenario like that of Stargate, "this is one of the many groups of non-humans who inhabit the universe and which at some point pretended to be gods of men, taking inspiration from legends and inspiring other legends, but they know they aren't gods, and other alien species definitely don't see them as such". Or even an American Gods scenario, where ancient gods are real and at some point may be trying to come back. But the comic book one where this are actually aliens with much more advanced technology, BUT also they are the actual "gods" of legend, see themselves as gods and their lives are influenced by concepts of legend BUT they are a major interstellar player in sci-fi-ish affairs; I don't know, that melange of concepts is too silly for me. I can definitely enjoy it, but I'll enjoy it more if the silliness of the scenario is pointed out.
I'm not sure why you find it silly. A kid reading a Spider-Man comic today isn't too different from a chieftain telling a young warrior about Odin, Thor, and Loki. While I enjoyed Ragnarok, I don't think it was all what some made it cracked up to be because there were huge tonal and character shifts, specifically with Thor. He leaves Earth after Ultron to find Surtur and then he returns cracking jokes and one-liners left and right? Doesn't add up to the personality of Thor that was presented in the first 2 movies. There's nothing wrong with humor, but I wish we could have had more intense & moving scenes like Odin's death, instead of finding ways to build up something to be serious and then pulling back the floor and throwing a joke in there. Sometimes I wasn't sure whether to laugh or not. I think it would have been more appropriate and in line with the characters that have already been established. Also with how the Warriors Three got kicked to the wayside like they were nothing. For me I still prefer TDW, due in large to Loki's development & the awesome soundtrack, but whatever floats your boat I guess.
7HE W0LV3R!NE It's not Thor, the god from Norse mythology that I find silly, it's not any god or mythological figure that I find silly, it's specifically the combination of mythological beings AND super heroes that I sometimes find silly, just like, say, a crossover between Doctor Who and Star Wars could be very fun but would also have to be silly to work. With some genre combinations (let's call mythology a genre), you have to be very tongue in cheek to make it work.
Sorry it doesn't work for you. I love both Norse mythology and comic books. I think for someone unfamiliar with Norse mythology, it isn't too far-fetched to put Thor in the Avengers because it's a group of super-powered beings.
What I would expect: In a deep and fierce Scottish accent: "ARGH! I am KORG, the most feared warrior short of the Grandmaster's Champion! Welcome, Thor, to the place that will become your tomb!" What happened: In a calm and casual New Zealand accent: "Hi there. I'm Korg. This is Miek. I think we'll call you 'New Doug.' Make yourself at home. Breakfast is served at 6am in the local time." ...and it worked.
Oh, it definitely did! As more and more superhero films come out, they need fresh stylistic takes to stay relevant and fresh. Do you think you'd like to see more movies go in that direction? Or is this a nice departure, every once in a while?

When the interviewer called Karl Urban an Australian I really thought Taika was going to set him straight. I wonder if there may be some inside joke here or if this has happened before and he just can't be bothered correcting them lol.
Why did the interviewer feel like he had to pair New Zealand with Australia in every NZ reference? NZ is its own country with its own unique and special culture, not a province of Aussie. They may be neighbors and share a lot of things, but yeah, NZ is its own wonderful thing.
@@alphanerd7221 Only partially. New Zealand is very much its own culture, as is Aussie. They each have their own blends of native and colonial culture that formed in different ways, but they do intersect in many places. They're not twins, but more like half-siblings.
@@the_real_littlepinkhousefly No it isn't. You have the same movie stars, the same TV, Sports, environmental ideals, the same stupid form of government honoring the same foreign monarch, the same set of accents. California and Louisiana are more like separate cultures.
The film was directed to a younger audience. I never had a near full theatre with a lot of quiet kids. They all laughed at some of the jokes. And the older kids laughing at another, the ones that the younger ones don't understand. My kid likes it. That's all that matters
I second this. First I went to a midnight premiere. That was an adult audience. Next time it was a Sunday afternoon and the room was full of kids. I freaked out because I know how they could behave if they loose the focus and this movie is looong. And, surprise, they were sitting there amazed, laughing, wondering if they got "Devil's A...s" right but very well disciplined.
This is like the time James Gunn tries to direct Guardians of the Galaxy and many people spited it. And in the end, it became one of Marvel's magnum opus.

imagine guardians of the galaxy directed by watiti
Abobster Uno Yes! Please!
Don't think it's really his style. The guardians of the galaxy have their own style
This comment is closer than ever to becoming reality.
At this point, I think he's the only one qualified to take over Guardians of the Galaxy.
I really like the James Gunn style of GOTG, really sad that he left. Waititi's movie has the sense of awkwardness and humor that suits Thor, the "king" of Asgard. Hope this style can br put on the guardians too but not sure if it's gonna work
Taika is so brilliant. I can't think of anything he's done that I haven't liked. I hope he gets to make more MCU movies.
It was amazing sitting in the cinema recognising all the jokes and references. I think aussies will appreciate it so much :)
"I like my screenplays, I think they're pretty good" - Now has an oscar for best adapted screenplay
I love you Taika. You made my favorite superhero the best superhero
Taika is THE BEST. Looking forward to all his coming work!
'Oh My God, the hammer pulled you off?!'
Hehe
“I encourage bad ideas because we can go from there to where we need to go.”
The movie was brilliant and having Taika direct was a stroke of genius.
I'm not a fan of superhero movies, but I fickin' loved Ragnarok.
Jakob Randel glad you liked it
in all my time on the internet i have never seen someone say fickin
Ok now we should DEMAND a Taika Watiki Police Academy Film cause that sounds freaking AWESOME
agreed
Roberto Monterrosa, Wilder Police Academy... XD
I did not know I wanted this.
Bet Watiki would make CHIPS a better film😂
Taika Watiti Pink Panther movie
What I would expect:
In a deep and fierce Scottish accent: "ARGH! I am KORG, the most feared warrior short of the Grandmaster's Champion! Welcome, Thor, to the place that will become your tomb!"
What happened:
In a calm and casual New Zealand accent: "Hi there. I'm Korg. This is Miek. I think we'll call you 'New Doug.' Make yourself at home. Breakfast is served at 6am in the local time."
...and it worked.
Oh, it definitely did! As more and more superhero films come out, they need fresh stylistic takes to stay relevant and fresh. Do you think you'd like to see more movies go in that direction? Or is this a nice departure, every once in a while?
I see him and I just think, “Viago”
same xD
😂😂😂
that and "Shogun."
You win this comment thread.
Irene Haralabatos Waitin for him to use his real Viago voice
i'd actually really like to see the sizzle reel he made! i think it would be cool to see what movies and clips he grabbed.
this is so funny, he makes one of the greatest movies of the year, one of the best MCEU movies and his reaction is "thanks, i hated it"
i was hoping to see more of him on the MCEU, he is a very good director
He is joking. His sense of humour is a mix of dry and sarcasm.
It’s MCU not MCEU
whatever
Lmao this is the first time someone said MCEU 😂
The movie was good but honestly taika should be a one-movie director in the mcu. I feel like his style would become dry if he makes another one...
This interviewer keeps lumping New Zealand and Australia together - I mean he realises that these are separate countries right?
@SoTotallyEpic it's the equivalent of calling Canada America
@@HoennAngel not really
@SoTotallyEpic we are like very close siblings. We give each other alot of flack, but we will tear anyone else a new one if you try and diss our sibling
I mean, Canada and America ARE pretty similar too. Especially in the states along the border.
*realizes*
Geez, where did you people learn to speak American?
I feel like even if he had no talent as a director, he could easily be a movie star. Charisma and good looks to the max.
Hello from 2024😄
His voice sounds like Hugh Jackman and Johnny Depp have become one.
Josh J now I can never unhear!
Oh my god....
Yooo
He doess
Another day.. another Doug
See you later "New Doug"
Isaiah DeAngelis 🤣🤣🤣
This guy can’t stop talking over his guest, and doesn’t appear to be able to tell the difference between Australia and New Zealand.
ArchGeek he is Canadian I feel like a lot of us can’t
I love Taika Waititi, but I don't really like the interviewer. He uses "but" too many times, and that comes off as arguing with the guest's answers, as if they didn't answer right
He doesn't get Waititi's humour
Asked if he was daunted when walking on the set
Takia pompous tone -“...not really ive done a few big commercials...”
Lmfao 😂😂😂
Tom Power!!!! I listen to this guy every day on the CBC radio. I look forward to his interviews every day. So very strange to finally see your lovely face.
Thor: Ragnarok was a masterpiece. I've watched it at least 7 times, and each time there's more subtle details that make it more epic, and at the same time, more funny.
I think this is the most serious interview Taika has done and it was still hilarious, this guy is incredible
Great interview, the paceing was amazing.
Australian/NZ dead pan humour is starting to get noticed on the international platform and it's great.
For Thor 3 we want Haircut, Bruce Banner and Fun.
Marvel Studios gets it. As simple as it is, they get it.
such a great host and interviewer
I agree. the Interview was impressive. kudos!
Wow have you guys been watching the other interviews Waititi has been doing for this movie? I came to this one thinking it was the most boring and lifeless of the lot! (Although I give the soft spoken host the benefit of the doubt as he seems to be making a radio show)
interviewee ;)
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? HE THINKS HE"S SO FUNNY AND HES NOT!. dont get me wrong, he did good.. but I would have asked a lot more questions. damn I need a show!!!
HAHA, good one bro. I LOOOVE sarcasm.
Ragnarok was probably my favorite Thor movie just because it was exciting and visually/aesthetically pleasing 🙂
One of my Favorite Directors.
One of my Favorite MCU movies.
My daughter and I watched it over and over after the release.
I want Taika to get money to make a standalone Korg movie and for Korg to become part of the Guardians or something.
Korg would gel SO well with the Guardians! Maybe after Guardians 3?
Great interviewer. So casual and not forced. Unique questions as well.
Taika is really confident in himself but his humor kills me 😂 what a neat dude
He's an original. Super fun guy. Loved the interview.
When the interviewer called Karl Urban an Australian I really thought Taika was going to set him straight. I wonder if there may be some inside joke here or if this has happened before and he just can't be bothered correcting them lol.
Same!
same thought here
Probably didn't want to put him on the spot.
he also kept mispronouncing “waititi” lmao
put me into a room with Taika and i would fall over myself giggling and blushing lmao. He's so charismatic and sarcastic
If iron man and captain jack sparrow had son😂😂
He’s never been THAT drunk!!!
@@nochannelmusician769 he doesnt need to be😂😂
He's so cool!
I didn't know he was so brilliant after seeing him in What We Do in the Shadows. He basically saved Thor!
He's robert downey jr from an alternate universe
14 Aspen Drive or just from another country
The alternate universe of New Zealand.
Thats what i thought of him when i first saw him
14 Aspen Drive More like estranged brother of estranged RDJ
i cannot unsee this.
Why did the interviewer feel like he had to pair New Zealand with Australia in every NZ reference? NZ is its own country with its own unique and special culture, not a province of Aussie. They may be neighbors and share a lot of things, but yeah, NZ is its own wonderful thing.
No. They share a culture.
I didnt want to see Thor Ragnarok. After a few minutes in, I was smiling ear to ear and having a blast. Its now my fave Marvel superhero film.
The film was directed to a younger audience. I never had a near full theatre with a lot of quiet kids. They all laughed at some of the jokes. And the older kids laughing at another, the ones that the younger ones don't understand. My kid likes it. That's all that matters
Jun hee Bae the film is directed to ALL audiences. There are things the kids like but like u said, there are stuff that only adults get
IP Films yeah, I just found it unusual to see and hear a lot of younger kids in an almost full theatre room
Bob Newby, Superhero 🤣
Jun hee Bae "Oh my God, the hammer pulled you off?"
11:33 completely agree. Give credit where credit is due. The movie is totally awesome and fun to watch and it was thanks to his style in filmmaking
This is like the time James Gunn tries to direct Guardians of the Galaxy and many people spited it. And in the end, it became one of Marvel's magnum opus.
Taika’s character is a total scene stealer; I laughed at every line, and laughed myself silly in Endgame when Korg got into it with an online gamer. 😂😂😂
I love the way Thor says "The GROUND!" in that. it was so funny.
Karl Urban is from Wellington, New Zealand.
Max Wu
So is taika
Max Wu They need to do another Judge Dredd. Such an underrated movie.
Yeah but we adopted him mate, we take all the good NZ ones. Russel Crowes ours now. So's Pavlova.
Taika Waititi? Nah mate, hes an aussie. See thats how it starts and the rest of the world doesnt understand the difference between our accents so we just get away with it haha.
unfortunately thats true.
that’s why this man is my favorite director.
This is an excellent, thought provoking interview, and I appreciate the seriousness with which TW approached it.
We think he balanced the humor and the seriousness quite nicely :) Thanks so much for watching!
Taika is awesome and all, but, as someone who never seen this channel before(binging Taika interviews after watching Jojo), I have to give so much props to this interviewer. Absolute godtier interviewing, genuinely. Will check out the rest of the channel because of him.
Waititi basically interviews himself here
Ohhh Taika, you are an amazing director and actor. When I first saw you appear in Free Guy, I turned to my teenager and geeked out. "Korg!!" He smiled and whispered, "Revolution!" 😂🤗
“I think my screenplays are pretty good.” ......
His next film wins him an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Not to mention his first film/short film got an Oscar nomination. It’s not being cocky when it’s true
i didnt really like Ragnarok at first...but the more i rewatched it the more it became a brilliant movie.....then this guy goes and makes What We Do in the Shaddows tv show...this guy is a genius in comedy
I know he's probably already signed on to do another Thor or Marvel movie, but can we just get him to do something like the Flash? He'd be perfect!
One for them one for you, probably covered it. Could be another Disney project.
Nah let him do a Spider-Man sequel
I didn't know the flash was funny
charles austin Spider-Man would be perfect for him
TGC.Films Akira
Hearing Taika talking about how Aussie's and Kiwi's can easily differentiate between the accents got me thinking about how many times I've seen people mistake Korg's accent for South African. Like, even as a South African _myself_ I was also having an internal argument about his accent.
It’s great to now be able to call him Academy Award Winner Taika Waititi, he totally deserved it
Thor: Ragnarok is one of the best MCU movies to date. I was quite surprised to learn Waititi directed it, just because he's not done these kind of tentpole movies before. I quite enjoyed "What We Do In the Shadows."
"The hammer pulled you off?"
Thor: "The ground!"
This has been the most chill I've seen Waititi in any interview.
Thor Ragnarok topped Winter Soldier as my favourite Marvel movie. And I'm writing this after having seen Black Panther and Infinity Wars.
EquinoxIV same! Ragnarok is like a personal masterpiece to me lol. My top 5 MCU is Ragnarok, IW, CW, BP and WS and HC gets an honorable mention
Black panther and iron man 3 and Thor 1&2 are personally at the bottom of the list for me
Why is WS a lot of ppl's favs? Its definitely not a bad movie but its not in my top 5 marvel movies.
Still is my favorite, even after endgame
Taika did a remarkable job with Ragnarok, i had massive doubts but it was a total homerun. Bravo.
uber mensch agreed
It’s so funny, after watching the movie at least 6 times now, it might be my favorite movie. Unexpected but I love pretty much every second of the film.
6:50 : Taka: 'I love myself."
Aww, what a healthy self mindset. Good job dude!
