Hey there! Congrats on completing med school. Why do people that go to SGU talk about how great it is and also say do everything you can first to get into a US school? I’ve always been curious about this.
Legitimate question. SGU is a very good school and one of the most beautiful locations, hands-down. Literally a tropical paradise! That said, it is a for-profit school, which makes it more expensive than say a US State school. There are also certain programs that are not IMG friendly, so you would be automatically excluded from them. Your education will still be fantastic and you will still be given the opportunities to match into any specialty albeit *slightly* more challenging.
Another detail with the cost, SGU gives some great scholarships. It ended up actually being cheaper than one of the US medical schools that I had been waitlisted on because the US school was also private
Thanks for the response. I find that SGU has a lot of systems of learning in place that may not be offered at a US medical school. As a “super non trad” 48 years young this is super important to me. I’m also looking to expand my work globally with diverse and underserved populations. Thanks again for your response. I’ve also heard that about the scholarships.
Great questions. How to surround yourself with smart people: Be a good student yourself, find the people who are focused on study halls, and find people who are well prepared and seemed organized from small groups
For the great sense of humor, try this: eat a large burrito, preferably with beans. Find the quietist study hall and let one rip. If anyone giggles, you aced it 💪
Hey Dr. Greg - currently a premed applying and am on multiple waitlists. How can I see the light at the end of the tunnel without losing my way? I feel defeated and uncertain, makes me wonder how I’m gonna get through it all
Everyone feels that in some way with some not even being waitlisted! It’s a really good sign that you were at least waitlisted, means that you stand out in some way. Another important aspect is that many people don’t get in on their first round. That’s just the reality because it’s so competitive. When is this last day for them to let you know? Is this the end of the cycle?
I’m having trouble deciding if I should waste time strengthening my application and trying to apply for the 2026 cycle or should I just go to SGU in January and save a lot of time
This is a tough question. If it was your MCAT, you can definitely improve your chances with that. If you think it is your GPA, there is not much you can change. The other question is how many places you applied to. Did you apply to every option that you had or just the ones you’d like to go to? Because I would definitely apply to every single program that you could possibly get into, including DO schools
@@medical_muscle_greg thanks for your reply! I haven’t taken the MCAT yet but my gpa is relatively low, (below 3.3). I haven’t applied anywhere yet I am taking prerequisite classes after undergrad because I’m a nontraditional student who switched careers. I will be done with MCAT and prereqs at the end of this year, meaning I have to apply for 2025-2026 cycle. Should I not waste time? My gpa won’t change much…
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom, and doing it with such a positive attitude and charisma. Much appreciated.
Thanks man!
Great advice as always Dr Greg, thanks for the motivation on my way to class!
Great 👍
100% agree... just made a very similar video!
Thanks bro. I’ll check it out man 💪

Hey, Dr Greg! How can I surround myself with people who are smarter than me. How do I develop a great sense of humor?

Very good video and advice. Especially being surrounded by positive folks and keeping humor alive. Avoid scrooge swimming in toxic waste.

@@bu-realm3849 You’re right, GPA won’t change that much. Take the MCAT, see how you do first. Who knows, maybe you will kill it!
