    Zooming while moving smoothly? 4K RAW with a B4 2/3" lens? Spontaneous one-man operating?
    I thought I'd try all three with my FS7 on the EFP Steadicam & filmed my dear old dad for some test footage! EVERY SHOT HAS A ZOOM! Sorry about the dusty lens...
    For maximum sharpness and depth of field we shot this at f22, recording the CineEI Slog3 RAW output straight to the Odyssey7Q.
    KIT USED:
    - Sony PXW-FS7
    - Modified EFP Steadicam
    - MTF Services B4 to E-mount adaptor
    - Canon HJ11x4.7 ENG 2/3" B4 zoom lens
    - Varizoom zoom demand on the Steadicam gimbal handle
    - Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q recorder/monitor for RAW 4K
    All equipment and Steadicam Operator available to hire from www.fryfilm.com/

    Sorry about the poor operating. I was concentrating more on creating situations to use the zoom - spontaneously!

    Great video and I also like that you can use the zoom while running the rig.
    Something to test out

    Great video!! Glad to see someone doing some proper grading with the FS7. It's easy to spot the use of an F5 / F55 or FS7 on TV because the grading is always terrible. No contrast or colours and sometimes one color that is way too saturated. And pretty soft images.. Your video on the other hand shows a nice natural looking image. BTW, I noticed you are using an SD lens here (the J11ax4.5), not an HD lens. Is that correct? It's certainly producing a fantastic image. Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks Derran, I also hate the over coloured 'Sony' look! The J11 and the newer HJ11 have identical replacement part numbers, so sharpness is the same on the old model!

    i felt a little sea sick when you zoom and move - also the zooming increases your rocking/movement - even with the steadicam - thank you for sharing! happy new year!

    • @TheSteadicamMan
      @TheSteadicamMan  7 років тому +1

      No the zooming does not increase any movement because it does not affect the Steadicam in any way. Zooming while moving forward or back does amplify that perceived linear dynamic travel though, so I understand what you mean.

    Where are you connecting the lens? I can see the power cable is plugged in at the back of the camera but I cant see how.

      Lens power hirose to D-tap cable straight into the battery.

    Hey John got my first job coming up using the Fs7, your rig in the vid looked like it might be extremely bottom heavy. Any tip for using this camera on a full size rig? i have an mk-v. Thanks

    • @TheSteadicamMan
      @TheSteadicamMan  6 років тому

      The drop time is about 2 1/2 seconds, as usual outside with a touch of wind. Tips kind of depend what you'll be doing with it. Can you be more specific?

    Hey John! I am looking to get a steadicam rig for cinema cameras. What would you recommend that can hold around 15-19 pounds. Will be running either a RED Gemini or FS7 with Sigma 18-35mm cine. Looking for something under $5,000.

      Check out my Steadicam Database for a complete list of Tiffen Steadicam models organised however you want, so you can set the table to go by weight range: www.johnfrysteadicam.co.uk/the-steadicam-database/

    Hey John, can you please tell me the model of the Steadicam... Or the link from where it was purchased... Nice video by the way. Thanks

      @TheSteadicamMan  4 роки тому +1

      This is a modified Cinema Products Steadicam EFP. It was bought privately from another Steadicam Operator & modified by me & friend. This model is from 1989 so you will not find it for sale anywhere new!

    how do you focus on the go?

    • @TheSteadicamMan
      @TheSteadicamMan  7 років тому +3

      You don't! That's what a focus puller's job is. Actually you can control the focus with a controller like the zoom demand, if the lens has the focus servo. G-zoom do a nice one for Steadicam.

    • @andrewtregoning
      @andrewtregoning 7 років тому +1

      so does the focus puller do it remotely?? sorry for the noob questions!

    • @TheSteadicamMan
      @TheSteadicamMan  7 років тому +1

      Yes. There are plenty of remote follow focus kits available these days; Preston, Bartech, C-motion, Arri have their own, etc.

      Depends how well you have been trained. If you practice enough and set the system up properly the weight is well distributed over your whole torso. Learn how to do it properly and what models are available at an Official Steadicam Workshop: tiffen.com/pages/flysteadicam

    What ISO did you shoot this at ?
    A lot of time, I found B4 lens cause the edge of the image to be softer than the center

    • @TheSteadicamMan
      @TheSteadicamMan  8 років тому

      Sharpness depends entirely what lens you use. Some B4 lenses cost a grand, some £20,000, some are new, some are 20 years old, so there is an enormous range of quality across all those lenses. This was all CineEI, so native ISO.

    did you have to use the doubler john? Or is the adaptor made to cover the image

    • @TheSteadicamMan
      @TheSteadicamMan  8 років тому +1

      +Job Scholtze The adaptor is designed to make use of the doubler. You can use the 2x centre crop instead, but the results are noticeably worse. Some weird guy explains the adaptor quite well in this video: ua-cam.com/video/f2xcFwXIzOg/v-deo.html

    • @Rinsky1206
      @Rinsky1206 8 років тому

      Why are the results when using the centre crop worse? What do you mean?

    • @TheSteadicamMan
      @TheSteadicamMan  8 років тому

      They are less sharp with centre crop, the chromatic aberration is worse, ghosting and flare are all visibly worse - but that is because this adaptor was designed to be used Without centre crop but With the lens doubler.

    how many youtube channels do you have? and.. no one has 4k screens... nice set up tho

    • @TheSteadicamMan
      @TheSteadicamMan  6 років тому

      When did you buy your 4K screen? My comment could have been entirely true when the video was uploaded. I know some people do have 4K displays, but they are less than 1% of the audience, and less than 1% of broadcast material on any medium is in 4K, so you have to admit there is some truth to what I said. Not that its actually relevant to the videos topic or how we advocate using 4K to film though.

    What battery pack did you use to power your servo lens? Will it work for other B4s lenses?

    • @TheSteadicamMan
      @TheSteadicamMan  7 років тому

      I used the V-lock battery on the camera with a D-tap to hirose cable. Yes this will work for all B4 lenses, although Fujinon ones need a slightly different cable.

    • @IxverPro
      @IxverPro 7 років тому +1

      Thank you for responding to my comment. Did you set your lens in auto focus mode? What lens is that?

    • @TheSteadicamMan
      @TheSteadicamMan  7 років тому +2

      There is no autofocus on any B4 lenses. Its a very wide lens anyway, then I set a medium distance with a closed aperture so there was no need to touch the lens as everything was in focus.
      As it says in the description, the lens is a Canon HJ11x4.7.
