- More on the MTF B4 ENG lens adaptor for E-mount and Canon cameras, now we have the 2K centre crop mode on the Sony PXW FS7, what that does to the image, and your lens & recording options.
This is not a review or tutorial, just an explainer of what you can expect when using the MTF adaptor with the FS7 and it's 2x centre crop mode.

Thank you very much. Extremely useful. What is the full frame equivalent focal lens on the Canon lens you were using?
Crikey, that'll take some maths to be accurate! But something like 18mm to 200mm.
FS7 on centre crop mode HD has proven to be a substandard image for me. (S-35 lenses) My preference instead is to shoot 4K internally and HD externally via a docked SDI Samurai Blade SSD recorder. Both 10bit 422 and both with identical Timecode.
How does what it’s recorded on make any difference to the optical quality of the image?
@@fryfilm2000 because centre cropping the 4K sensor to achieve HD is different to hardware down-scaling a 4K image to HD via the SDI output board
@@CraigMarshall_HDvideo4K Oh I see. Yes I don't like the centre crop HD either. That's why I used the MTF adaptor for B4 lenses because it covers the whole S35 chip, and in doing so allows B4 for 4K in the FS7!
At 1:31 you said "Now we are recording full HD, with the center crop mode, no doubler added on the lens, Super 35 sensor has been completely covered..." That is false, of course. The Super 35 sensor is *NOT* covered, which is why you had to engage the crop mode to get a full image.
Also, you don't "lose any light" using the doubler. The doubler just spreads the light out over a larger area, which makes the image darker. The doubler doesn't change the lens's aperture diameter nor how much light it captures from the scene. The doubler does double the f-number, which is just a mathematical consequence of the focal length being doubled. (N = f/D)
Sorry, I miss-spoke. We don’t script these videos so one does occasionally make a mistake, apologies.
Hi, thank you for this useful video. You mentioned you could use a EF-E Speedbooster adapter instead of the mtf one. Would it technically work to use a combination of speedbooster+ef/b4 and what would the picture look like? Many thanks and merry Christmas!
I'd be curious too. I just picked up what looks to be a similar lens (HJ17ex7) and am hoping for some good news about what my EF speedbooster can do for me once my B4 to MFT mount arrives.
Thanks!
Tell us what the pictures look like! I don’t have one.
So, even with the dummy adapters is possible to get rid of the vignetting? I want to adapt my B4 to my Sony a6400 which is an APSC sensor, I was thinking about use the 2 times extender and the clear image zoom, it can work like that?
It's possible I guess, but without the optical correction in the adaptor the image quality will be too nasty for paid work.
What was the full model of the lens please, I have an FS7Mk2 and would like to add this to the set up. I believe its a Canon HJ11... something? Thanks
Canton HJ11 is correct, HJ11x4.7B. The rest of the name depends on what motors it has in it.
HI, can you name the exact adapters you were using? Looking for an option for the b4-EF conversion. Thank you!
Yeah we were using the excellent MTF B4 to E mount, which includes the B4 to EF part!
@@fryfilm2000 Wow, thats expensive! Thanks so much for clarifying :)
