      But one of the novels clarifies that after WW3, France was heavily decimated. And a lot of its population from the 21st century onwards are descended from Britain, Spain, and Italy.
      The Picard series kinda confused this even more by saying that Picards family had always been French and only momentarily British from WW2 until the 22nd century.

    • @connorgonzalez4023

      @@safebox36 The real behind-the-scenes explanation is that Stewart tried the accent and it didn't work. The novels aren't canon, so the on-screen explanation we're given in Picard, that the family fled France to escape the Nazis, is the official story.

    • @iamoctonate
      @iamoctonate Рік тому +23

      @@Mr.Derogatory316 You can't win with the Trek fan base. Either they cry that its too "pew pew dumbed down action," or it's "booooring." While I don't think Insurrection is a brilliant movie, I can enjoy it as a long form TNG episode with more action that a standard TNG episode. It's an easy and enjoyable watch that does at least have a moral dilemma albeit not a deeply developed one.
      First Contact, as good as it is, has a very linear goal. Sure, it has the Captain Ahab moment, but that plot line is only there to ensure that Picard is willing to set aside is own personal vendetta against the Borg for the sake of humanity's future. I should not that I am not undermining the importance of it as I think it was serviceably done and relevant to the material at hand.
      But going back to Insurrection, it carries forward the idea that after the Dominion War, Starfleet was changed. It was willing to push the line of what was moral it meant getting the job done, and it was up to Picard and the TNG cast to remind the Federation of what happens when a superpower brings itself down to the level of petty thugs and ignores the consequences of their actions. Starfleet's willingness to set aside it's ideals to get this radiation blinded them to the plot of the So'na and their motivations.
      My point, is that despite Insurrection being classified as a "TNG episode stretched into a movie", which historically has not worked, it is actually enjoyable and watchable like "First Contact," and unlike Generations and Nemesis.

    • @NACLGames
      @NACLGames 8 місяців тому +1

      @@iamoctonate I certainly agree on your points. Insurrection as a result is a pretty 'watchable' film in a way that Nemesis and Generations weren't. However, I'd point out that often fans can't be trusted (as a group at least) to pin-point why they don't like a show. You can only trust that there is an issue somewhere, and sometimes I find it's very far away from the reasons they proffer up.
      Put it this way, it's actually really easy to essentially convince oneself of something that is plausible, even if ultimately incorrect. Only with proper discipline and dispassionate analysis, would you avoid such a thing...not things you'd typically find in fan arguments. Labeling Insurrections as a higher budget TNG episode and lacking action movie chops is a plausible argument, even if ultimately flawed and wrong. That has people criticizing scenes like this, and using it as "evidence" that Insurrection is a bad movie, when the real problem lies elsewhere, and is of a different nature.
      I think the discontent in this case does stem from something a little related. The movie lacks greater stakes that isn't made apparent enough, even if it's a commentary on wartime expediencies. Speaking of which, this movie actually occurs during the Dominion War, not after it. That adds to that feeling. A war is going on, yet Enterprise is dealing with what on the face of it, appears to be "problem of the week" like a TNG episode. Not to mention clearly the aren't on a war footing. While there are many in-universe explanations for this and some are included in the movie, audiences are still presented with significant dissonance. Even without it, it feels like a step down from First Contact.
      All in all, especially with hindsight, I don't think it's a particular problem, and I've watched Insurrection multiple times and enjoyed it. However, it's a difficult film to shallow first time at the theater, and fans being fans, they're usually not going to give a movie or show much of a second chance....at least until people start playing the nostalgia card and compare it to the current 'garbage show' they hate, whatever that may be. I should also add that any good movie is a sum of it's parts, and just raising the stakes nilly willy, and stuffing a lot of action in it isn't good enough by itself either, or can save other poor writing or direction decisions. Nemesis definitely demonstrated that.

    I🎶 can tell undoubted Raphael’s from Gerald Dow’s and Zophanies.
    I know the croaking chorus to the Frogs of Aristophanes.
    Then I can hum a fugue of which I’ve heard the music’s din afore.🎶
    Ooo, din afore? Ah, I’ve got it!
    🎶And whistle all the airs of that *infernal nonsense Pinafore*.🎶

Syfy shows and movies actually were something that my dad and I bonded over and got him and I close. Amazing to think the movies for this, were just a few upped graphics and additional sound enhancements, same stuff as the t.v. series, yet had a different feel and felt a bit exciting. Also this situation, explains why having an imagination programmed into ai would allow it to acknowledge moves like this, an attack or attempt to distract. A psychological attack of sorts, on a device that has a programmed psyche.
