One of the most common types of cuts you'll have to make with a circular saw is the CROSSCUT. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show you how to make the fastest, easiest crosscuts possible with the circular saw, and very simple tools and techniques!
Circular Saw Basics: EASIEST CROSSCUTS!! (6 Tips For Fastest, Easiest Circular Saw Crosscuts!)
Circular saws intimidate new DIYers because they're a FREEHAND TOOL, meaning that they have no system of guides built in to keep them on track.
To make very accurate circular saw crosscuts, I believe that you need a guide that is easy to use, and always at hand.
I prefer to use the common SPEED SQUARE.
By holding the speed square against the edge of a board, you can use it as a guide for the edge of the sole plate of your circular saw.
I like to keep the bar of the speed square along the edge of the board nearest to me--though some people hang the bar from the far edge.
It's often a good idea to clamp your speed square before making your circular saw cut. Just be sure that the clamp is not in the way of the circular saw body.
You can also use the speed square to make ANGLED CUTS with the circular saw!
Just pivot the speed square at the corner until the correct angle number is aligned with the edge of the board. Then, use the edge of the speed square like normal as a guide for the edge of the circular saw sole plate.
It's a good idea to clamp down your board as well to prevent movement or wandering.
Just remember: CIRCULAR SAWS ARE DANGEROUS!
This video is just a source of information. It's up to you to use tools safely! Follow all safety instructions in your manual, and be sure to seek help or guidance from a professional if you need it. Never make a cut if you feel that it's unsafe to do so!
    Thanks for watching!

I taught middle school woodshop for 40 years. I really appreciate your efforts to give good safe instruction to the next generation. Apprentice training served this function in the old days. Due to the lack of shop classes in schools today, it is up to UA-cam and other online sources to pass on needed skills to the next generation. Thanks again!

As a father of three pushing 40, I wish that I paid attention more back in shop class. I have skills but they aren't necessarily transferable to home life and I find being able to do basic carpentry among other skills trades invaluable.

Appreciate these videos too. I took woodshop in high school but I couldn’t pass the 100 answer safety test perfectly and ended up working in carpentry and framing I definitely needed to be taught by actually seeing it and being told safety tips in action not just memorizing for a test.

Great Tips! Growing up in an era when girls did not take shop, and as an adult, needing to use power tools for various projects, one of your later tips has been something I have utilized until I was comfortable with power saws, especially circular and table saws .... don't do it alone! Another great tip: watch youtube channels such as yours! Thanks for your help!!

1 item novices need to know: let the side with the off cut hang free to avoid pinching the blade. There’s a temptation to make your cut with support from other boards or saw horses on both sides of the cut, but that will lead to pinching the blade and the saw will try to back up on you. The other method is to fully support the workpiece with a sacrificial board or piece of foam or whatever (this works well when breaking down plywood and you intend to use both sides of the cut).

    • @simpleman283
      @simpleman283 2 роки тому +6

If cutting between saw horses, you must apply vertical force by the hand you are holding wood with to your work piece so that it feels almost like it if floating on the horse to your right. Otherwise like terobbO said it will pinch the blade and kick back on you.

Hi Ethan. As a young 79yr old ex engineering toolmaker who has just purchased their first circular saw, your videos are proving really invaluable to me as I am learning by doing basic woodworking ventures/exercises with the circular saw prior to trying more accurate projects later on. Example bird boxes, nothing spectacular or very accurate but they are giving me a big learning curve by using your methods on both safety and accuracy. So, thank you very much for taking the time to make these videos because I for one appreciate them very much Brilliant. Saddleworth in the U.K.

...been makin' sawdust for near 40yrs. Vids like this refresh and remind. Never hurts to hear someone tell you how to work safely in an environment fraught with so many built-in ways to draw blood. I look at my hands every time I enter my shop. I count my fingers. My goal in this is to leave the shop with as many fingers intact as I entered with.
You have a refreshingly crisp way of delivery. Not a lot of spurious emission, just good info. Well done!

Great tips - including the important safety tips, particularly for those new to a circular saw. It's now a few years since I started out in DIY carpentry but I still always take my time and treat the circular saw with as much respect ("fear" is good!) as I did the first time I ever used one.
Just one thing with the video is at the end with the unclamped repeat cuts. I know people will do this, particularly once experienced, but I still clamp EVERY time. Getting lazy with a circular saw is how you get hurt with a circular saw.

Excellent video. Your attention to detail is helpful to those that are not skilled carpenters.

I have used the speed square too for crosscuts and it really works great. You gave a lot of tips though that I had not thought of before so this was very helpful and I am looking forward to your next tutorial. Thanks for sharing this.

Brilliant idea to go back to the basics. For experienced carpenters it may be common knowledge but then, they probably don't watch tips videos. Thanks. Great channel 👍

Always great videos. I'm a retired CNC Machinist. Worked a lot of the old manual lathes also. I wish I would have gotten into woodworking. No room in the garage now that I've downsized to a condo and health reasons keep me from it also. All of your tips look great, wish I could try them all out. Thanks for the videos. All great.

Great video as always. I’ve also clamped down T squares for plywood, acrylic & pegboard cuts. That said if you take your time, free cuts can easily be done error free. Most screw up because they go too fast and refuse to reset. Cheers
