You should only buy a watch if you like it & it speaks to you personally. If it has history & certain merits, then that's a bonus & helps to make you like it even more...

Generally speaking I think for the most part you are correct. But...let's use the Speedmaster for example, there would be something special about owning a watch like that. Of course everyone knows it's not the exact model or specific watch that was on the moon, but hey it's from the same manufacturer who made it, and for the most part it is identical, if not slightly upgraded so what's wrong with enjoying a watch for those things if that makes you happy?

All of David’s points are spot on and I fully agree from my own experience. The only other point I would add is I strongly sense that there is a backlash from all of the hype that we were told during the Pandemic years (which David did not propagate like so many others). Specifically, many of us have had our own epiphany and are not following the herd, and not overpaying for brands just because they are popular sellers. My own sense is the pendulum is swinging back to value buying, and many of us collectors are now and will continue to be rewarded for our patience.

You’re indirectly saying that watches aren’t investments without attempting to do so. Buy what you like, wear it, make memories in it, and pass it down.

Always believed in buying what I like. If has a story ok that’s a bonus. Panda Daytona paying double to triple retail in my opinion is just ridiculous.

Not to mention that there are truly beautiful chronographs at so many different price points from other brands.

I bought the speedy not because it was the 1st on the moon but because it is still space qualified:the
1861 mvt was the last qualified and went in space ;-)

Intersting you bring up the speedy and explorer. 2 of my favorite watches and yes the history of them does appeal to me however its my own achievements that i want to buy the watch for, nothing someone elses. I plan on getting the explorer 1 next year having finished the wainwrights challenge, 3 peaks and welsh 3000s challenge…..18 months in and im halfway through the challenges so when i finish it will be a nice reminder of it. I cant just buy watches because they look pretty these days, it has to have some sort of meaning for them to last in my collection

Id add a caveat to the speedmaster - while its been reworked over the years, it's still the only watch officially rated by nasa for spaceflight. Which still makes it uber cool.

Not only. Astronauts also get the x33 as part of their kit. And its the one they use.

Sometimes people just purchase a watch. Let them because they might very well be content with their own reason.
Now, you speak of influences to as why not to buy or to buy (history, fashion, or celebrity influence), but just by stating your own opinon to why a person should or should not purchase a watch means that you too are influencing a person's watch purchase.
Hard to have it both ways.

I only found this because you have really upset the moonwatch weirdos who have thrown their toy rockets out of the pram boy 👦🏻 🚀

You said some people overpaid for a watch because there’s a story behind the watch. Ok, many more people overpay or overpaid for watches that are hyped from the secondary used grey market. You bring up the Speedmaster. People don’t overpay for that watch. That watch has been pretty much close to retail for years. People that want a great watch that flys under the radar, doesn’t show off, and doesn’t need to prove anything. Buy the Omega Speedmaster. Yes the Speedmaster is still used by astronauts to this day.

The calatrava is the best patek imo, i bought it in switzerland, it was the right size for me, and it had entirely hand finished movement. Better than the annual calendar. Now, I'm curious to see how much it's worth today, so I'm planning to do a little research.

Great that will fetch you some cash. *I used to be a collector, but I liquidated my collection to venture into real estate. In January, I acquired homes in Malibu for $55million, and the returns on investment far exceed what I earned as a collector.

Stories help make an emotional connection in a way that facts or figures can't. Its the emotional brain that makes the decision. Brands are stories, which we either buy into, small family historic craftmanship of Patek, or we don't. Eg Tudors affordable Rolex. Asking us not to buy into stories is asking us to stop making decisions. This entire category is a highly emotive category, as there is little rational reason to buy a mechanical watch whose technology is obsolete. Or we would all be wearing Chinese watches, as many swiss watches source parts from there, the finishing and precision is well established. All the Patek examples are based upon a story of the brand. Only if you bought a non branded watch could you achieve the goal that Adrian and yourself are suggesting.

Travis Scott was part of a scandal, yet he still got his own AP. Nobody cares about the scandals. They care about clout. That’s why Rolex is as big as it is. That’s why nobody wants Tudor or other brands that look like a Rolex. Rolex is where it is because of clout. That’ll never change.

I was disappointed when I tried on the latest iteration of the Moonwatch. It’s a lovely watch but…maybe it was the weight of expectation, but it left me cold. I was lucky enough to get a Breitling Premier B09 Pistachio dial instead, which is GORGEOUS, imho. I’d also tried the previous iteration of the Moonwatch and it didn’t work for me either (particularly that bracelet 🙄). That said, who cares - try on a watch - like it, or don’t like it. But I agree - don’t be influenced by the marketing/hype.

I do not agree. My grail is a 321 from 1967. Why I care about it ? Because I associate it with the moon landings, my own childhood, and all the memories I often feel when wearing the watch. It is called emotion. For God's sake David, let people love the watches they like, whatever they associate it with. It is their emotion that matters, not yours or some other youtuber's.

I wonder what happens if down the track in history it is shown/proven that they never landed on the moon? Now I'm not saying they did or they didn't.... But the non landing arguments are gathering momentum. Then Omega and everything it banked on never happened... Ouch

The messed up thing is that Smiths sponsored that Everest expedition, so Sir Edmund Hillary was wearing a Smiths watch at the summit. Though, Rolex watches were gifted to them too. Notice Rolex never takes full credit for it, but loves to misleadingly imply they are the Everest watch.

Watches are marketed to people the same way toilet tissue or mayonnaise is marketed to people.
At the end of the day, if someone wants to follow a trend or buy into and idea about something, that’s their business.
Just as you have bought into the idea of the black t’shirt and Apple Watch.
