Boy does he love a perpetual calendar watch. Could listen to him all day. So eloquent and articulate about what he loves whether it's music, guitars, watches and life .
You have succeeded John. I know I will never afford these ultra luxe watches but I love looking at them and seeing them through your eyes. I can appreciate the beauty of these watches without lamenting that I’ll never own one
John Mayer has the most insane, well rounded collection period. Not to mention his unreal ice skating on the fretboard for decades. He needs to start a podcast 100%, open a watch store, SOMETHING! He knows what’s up, and he knows it lol.
Thanks John, thanks Esquire! One of the beat and honest interviews about watches I’ve seen! John’s new AP is definitely something I can love and appreciate and it doesn’t frustrate me even though it is a grail watch for me. I’m just glad that watch is in the world and can be admired! Cheers!
John Mayer hodinkee interview #1 kicked off my watch collecting disease! Thanks Mr J.C.Mayer! This rabbit hole goes deep! Congratulations on the design 👏 Bravo. You captured perfection!
I underestimated John Mayer. I thought he was another head-in-the clouds artist. As others here have said he is very articulate. So knowledgeable on watches.
13:35 Interviewer: "Am I right to assume every facet of this sort of, I mean, there must be a thousand facets at the surface, must have been hand finished..." JM: "Is actually a stamped... brass dial..." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
MaMaCoo You are so well-informed about luxury watches. You've obviously done your due diligence and the comparison to the US is very informative...because of course, I live in New York. thank you very much
He brings up a great point regarding function vs aesthetic. I love PC's and Chronographs but there is just something about a beautiful watch and dial. For example, my addisdive that's very affordable has a textured sand color dial that is just stunning and it looks different when the light hits it on many angles.
Been watching your videos for a while now and was inspired to start a collection. Started with the MaMaCoo , its specs for price and clean looks, now am looking for a dress watch to add.
John Mayer is unique. He can articulate his sentences in such a way that he can make anything sound so interesting. He could make a piece of dirt exciting 🤣🙌. On the watch topic I think it would be interesting if he could get into some alternative watchmakers and move a little away from the mainstream. Of course he knows what he likes. An incredible musician, collector and person 🙌.
Could there be any less chemistry between two people? John is trying so hard to bring energy, but he gets no traction. Regardless, it was great hearing John talk about the watch.
I don’t think it’s meant to be a conversation. John could talk the hind legs of a donkey. Very smart guy, non the less. He talks about watches beautifully.
I think they are getting along well… John seems to be enjoying the questions he is asking and just talking about watches. Not everyone has to smile and joke signal approval every two seconds
Amazing content. It's so amazing that it's not only about the watch for John Mayer, but also about the story behind it. Well done Esquire, great interview! Wanting more of these, please!
3:21 John is close, but gets the algorithm of the quirk of 2100 incorrect. It’s not every 100 years. 2100 is not a leap year, because it is divisible by 100 and not by 400. However, 2000 was a leap year, because it is divisible by 400.
how has he never done this kind of sit-down for his guitar and amp collection. I would die happy if Reverb and/or Fender and/or Joe Bonammassa or even Paul and PRS put something like this together. Maybe it really doesn't interest him like it once did. Or he feels like it's too retrospectivey at this point.
What a great mind. Deeply thought opinions beautifully expressed. He is the man. Architecture, engineering and craftsmanship shown and expressed by a person that gets it. Class.
John!... The other not classic PC you missed to talk about is the IWC GST PC ref. 3756-03 that in titanium is mind-blowing plus it has a chronograph! plus plus is set for 400 years, a genius complication by Kurt Klaus. I know you know.
I love my perpetuals, but the other thing that doesn’t get discussed is you have to reset the watch twice a year for daylight savings time if you live in those areas . . .
John must have over 1000 watches by now. I have seen part of his vintage Rolex and IWC Big Pilot collection, and those were impressive. My favorite from his collection that I've seen is a Patek annual calendar with a champagne dial. It has a retail price of $175,000.
I really love your taste and style always so chic. My faves would be the mamacoo leather backpack and the Swarovski pave diamond ring so gorg. Thank you for your recommendations.
The blue dial AP Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar watch sells for $180 k. It is limited to 200 pieces in production. Only customers already listed with AP will be buying the watch.
Why is he out of touch? Because he can afford to collect something he likes? Are people with happy parents out of touch when talking to people with unhappy parents about their family? Can’t we just enjoy what we enjoy at he level we are without having to refrain ourselves to not hurt someone else’s feelings? You can t relate to watch collecting sure, but you can relate to someones passion about something. It’s the same as collecting coffe mugs. It’s something you enjoy and you put money effort and time into it.
Love the watch. But John Mayer is giving himself a bit too much credit saying he ‘designed’ it. It’s an old dial texture that AP have used before on royal oak QP?!?
No matter how much AP pay John, the gold Daytona with the green dial will always be the John Mayer. And it cost Rolex nothing. The new AP that JM designed is amazing though.
Perpetual calendar aka a chronometer is IMO the single most awesome human engineering ever to keep track of our most valuable currency: TIME! 😎 Personally I prefer, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe and Rolex. For myself and family, it is always about celebrating milestones as opposed to “status” which takes the depth out of meaningful collections. Great interview advertorial. ❤
I was watching a watch podcast and they were told that a well known watch insider with loads of experience said "Nobody sets the complications on these watches, they just set the time" 😶🤭🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Imagine buying a watch that costs what a house normally does and not setting it!!
1:09 Both the Rattrapante and the Minute Repeater are way more complex than the QP. Also there are watches that have multiple alarms way more complex than both the Rattrapante and the Minute Repeater, one example being my UN 670-88/212 that has 109 jewels for enacting multiple complications. There are also Grande Complication watches that have concurrently a QP, a Flyback Chrono and Cathedral Gongs Minute Repeater all in the same watch.
I'm a simple man. I see John Mayer + watches and click.
A simple man who loves complications
I loved his comment on when he used to drink and he would be in the bathroom buzzed people knocking on the door while he is staring at the dial.
I'm glad the interviewer was so excited about interviewing John Mayer.
So dull
At least he lets him talk... lots of interviewers just spend the whole session interrupting the interviewee.
😂
It’s his style. Tbh, I think he’s very cool & collected. Let’s his guest be the star of the show. Looked like Mayer enjoyed his questions.
@@KeepingWatchUK Exactly! He asked the right questions and just listened! People should listen more and talk less
John doing some heavy lifting on this interview.
Boy does he love a perpetual calendar watch. Could listen to him all day. So eloquent and articulate about what he loves whether it's music, guitars, watches and life .
I love it & hate it simultaneously. Almost too much waxing poetic.
Loved this interview with john mayer and professor snape
I was thinking the EXACT same thing!! He sounds just like him
Hahaha likewise
I thought he was Clapton 😅
Did you hear what he said at the end? (you) sound like Alan Rickman, but look like Eric Clapton XD
lol
Dude I could literally listen to John Mayer talk about watches forever
I could listen to John Mayer talk about anything and be very happy
You have succeeded John. I know I will never afford these ultra luxe watches but I love looking at them and seeing them through your eyes. I can appreciate the beauty of these watches without lamenting that I’ll never own one
John Mayer has the most insane, well rounded collection period. Not to mention his unreal ice skating on the fretboard for decades. He needs to start a podcast 100%, open a watch store, SOMETHING! He knows what’s up, and he knows it lol.
Best line is JM “I hate to be over metaphorical” naaaaaa lol you love it
Thanks John, thanks Esquire! One of the beat and honest interviews about watches I’ve seen! John’s new AP is definitely something I can love and appreciate and it doesn’t frustrate me even though it is a grail watch for me. I’m just glad that watch is in the world and can be admired! Cheers!
"saying it looks like a Hublot, is the same as taking a dump on the mailbox and then run away" might be one of the best statements of the century 😂😂
That AP is sick. Love that dial. I love it even without the whisky
Talk Nerdy to Me, John Mayer! I loved this entire hour! Thank you, Esquire.
John Mayer is a nice guy, I didn’t know much about him besides his fame. Love the blue sky dial!
13:35 Interviewer: "Am I right to assume every facet of this sort of, I mean, there must be a thousand facets at the surface, must have been hand finished..."
JM: "Is actually a stamped... brass dial..."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
an incredible moment
@@danshibley5635I love the interviewers response, ... hmmph
“When you get into watches…in a way……your kinda screwed for life”
MaMaCoo You are so well-informed about luxury watches. You've obviously done your due diligence and the comparison to the US is very informative...because of course, I live in New York. thank you very much
The interviewer reminds me so much of Alan Rickman :)
In his current form. They literally couldn't have found someone more wooden and dull.
Was thinking the SAME thing. Or even Elvis Costello.
This was driving me crazy…. Thank you 😂😂
John mayer makes me feel better about my watch obsession
He brings up a great point regarding function vs aesthetic. I love PC's and Chronographs but there is just something about a beautiful watch and dial. For example, my addisdive that's very affordable has a textured sand color dial that is just stunning and it looks different when the light hits it on many angles.
It’s kinda fun seeing watch talk on non-watch talk media. Thanks for another great John Mayor interview.
Ben Clymer is hate watching this rn
One hopes.
Been watching your videos for a while now and was inspired to start a collection. Started with the MaMaCoo , its specs for price and clean looks, now am looking for a dress watch to add.
Ben Clymer crying wearing shoes with no socks right now
..and a hermes scarf
…an ascot. And yes, he looks ridiculous.
Your name is fantastic😂🤣
Wauw the colourdesign is beautifull .🌌
John Mayer is unique. He can articulate his sentences in such a way that he can make anything sound so interesting. He could make a piece of dirt exciting 🤣🙌. On the watch topic I think it would be interesting if he could get into some alternative watchmakers and move a little away from the mainstream. Of course he knows what he likes. mannnn best ap so far i ever seen !!!!!!!
Their knowledge on watches is SERIOUSLY impressive.
this is by far the best watch interview of JM. Well done.
Man the reporter has such emotion !
Could there be any less chemistry between two people?
John is trying so hard to bring energy, but he gets no traction.
Regardless, it was great hearing John talk about the watch.
What do you expect from a guy wearing gloves and glasses like that? I can smell his foul english breath from here
Right? Man, i was thinking exactly the same.
Lol I was noticing as well with John’s usual dad banter and puns he was literally like not returning the same energy at all
I don’t think it’s meant to be a conversation. John could talk the hind legs of a donkey. Very smart guy, non the less. He talks about watches beautifully.
I think they are getting along well… John seems to be enjoying the questions he is asking and just talking about watches. Not everyone has to smile and joke signal approval every two seconds
I feel like I’ve jumped up 7 social classes watching this video 😂
So cool.. John really likes watches and knows so much about them.❤
Amazing content. It's so amazing that it's not only about the watch for John Mayer, but also about the story behind it. Well done Esquire, great interview! Wanting more of these, please!
John just called me poor in 102 languages
3:21 John is close, but gets the algorithm of the quirk of 2100 incorrect. It’s not every 100 years. 2100 is not a leap year, because it is divisible by 100 and not by 400. However, 2000 was a leap year, because it is divisible by 400.
Imagine how great would it be to have Eric Clapton talking about watches
Love the video, but the title feels desperate and misleading. If it was named what it actually is, it would have done better numbers
This is the funnest thing I’ve watched in a while
John siempre ha tenido a parte de arte y talento un insaciable conocimiento y amor por los relojes, es una de mis personas favoritas 😊
I do believe, John Mayer could sell water to a well
Agree. He could talk about a pencil for hours and make everyone fall in love with it.
“John Mayer shares his love for Pencils”
*click*
60 mins of watch content!..who are you Esquire.
how has he never done this kind of sit-down for his guitar and amp collection. I would die happy if Reverb and/or Fender and/or Joe Bonammassa or even Paul and PRS put something like this together.

i love you so much! I recently just found your mamacoo and i’m in love!! Your videos are so fun and you energy is just MWAH! keep living your life
John is so genuine. Very engaging content, thank you.
John’s trying so hard to engage this guy and he doesn’t add anything to the conversation besides his prepared questions
Agreed. He’s just not very informed or knowledgeable. He only sounds like he is.
A lot goes on his head,
If only....the white ceramic is to die for. Love it and would wear it constantly.
There’s a lot to love here. Great interview. Smart people.
This interviewer has Alan Rickman’s voice
Yes - I close my eyes, I see Professor Snape
I saw this watch in person. It’s stunning.
I wouldn’t be surprised if John did this for free. He just loves talking about watches.
They didn't even invite him, he just showed up with his own camera crew and demanded an interview. Which explains the energy level of the "host".
it’s like a 3D adventurine dial which is pretty cool. i still don’t know how timeless adventurine is going to be. i guess time will tell
“I hate to be overly metaphorical” - yeah sure you do John 🙄😂😂
When the interviewer knows nothing about the topic and every answer as to be preambled by the guest with 5-10 caveats.
Nice interview by none other than Mr Alan Rrrrrrrickman.
Such a gorgeous piece. John knows how to tell story..
And that Kanye west album in the background 😊
That Blue starry dial on the white ceramic ... oOff!!
58 minutes and 22 seconds still isn’t long enough.
I love him so much❤
Giving this to Esquire might have not been the best PR decision.
Please drop the ceramic one and film AP's reaction!
Terrance Howard of watches right here
Nothing can even touch what Lange and IWC do when it comes to the Perpetual calendar.
Winding the perpetual calendar is like keeping a tamagotchi alive
John!... The other not classic PC you missed to talk about is the IWC GST PC ref. 3756-03 that in titanium is mind-blowing plus it has a chronograph! plus plus is set for 400 years, a genius complication by Kurt Klaus. I know you know.

Mr. J C Mayer is REALLY a watch guy!!! not the badge Buyers, branded status folks….
The blue dial AP Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar watch sells for $180 k. It is limited to 200 pieces in production. Only customers already listed with AP will be buying the watch.
This watch is incredible. The Travis Scott watch is a Hublot
I forgot to mention the host has a similar voice to Professor Snape 🤣🤣🙌
A $180k watch with a stamped dial. AP is laughing all the way to the bank.
Seriously get this guy a rogan episode
John really tried to be down to earth after the last session with ed Sheeran which was wild how out of touch they are… didn’t really quite nailed it
Why is he out of touch? Because he can afford to collect something he likes? Are people with happy parents out of touch when talking to people with unhappy parents about their family? Can’t we just enjoy what we enjoy at he level we are without having to refrain ourselves to not hurt someone else’s feelings?
You can t relate to watch collecting sure, but you can relate to someones passion about something. It’s the same as collecting coffe mugs. It’s something you enjoy and you put money effort and time into it.
Mayer's IQ is so phenominal he can wax lyrical about pencils and I'd be interested.
Always a delight to see John talking about watches, the interviewer on the other hand is forgettable at best.
what kind of sweater is John wearing?
Loro piana
Loro Piana ‘T-shirt Crew’
Its a loro piana cashmere sweater
Love the watch. But John Mayer is giving himself a bit too much credit saying he ‘designed’ it. It’s an old dial texture that AP have used before on royal oak QP?!?

I see The College Dropout Vinyl in the back 🤌🏿
SHOULD WE TRY IT : BALLS ON THIS GUY ABSOLUTE MAGIC
I was watching a watch podcast and they were told that a well known watch insider with loads of experience said "Nobody sets the complications on these watches, they just set the time"
😶🤭🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Imagine buying a watch that costs what a house normally does and not setting it!!
why didnt he do this on hodinkee
He is definitely an asset
A perpetual calendar is almost useless, yet it is worth a fortune. I don’t think I would want to take care of one, but I would love to have one.
Love his music, but if I had a chance I'd rather talk watches with John Mayer.
13:42 well actually...
Can I borrow a feeling? Name that quote
nice!
“You’re in the loo, breathing a little hard thru your nose if you know what I mean”, yes, yes we do ;)
Ha! I thought that guy looked like Eric Clapton!

This might be the first AP RO I’ve seen and actually liked, although the bracelet still looks dated to me.
