- Snubnose Revolvers can be a very good tool, provided you do your part to train and gain proficiency with them.
By and large, I'd say they are not for a new shooter and even some intermediate level shooters.
They are unforgiving with grip and trigger deficiencies .
My suggestion is to learn to shoot full sized handguns well, including a sound grip and trigger press.
It's not that a newer or less experienced shooter can't learn to shoot a smaller framed gun, it's just not fun if it's a fight. This may cause a shooter to not want to train.
I've been in love with revolvers my whole life and wouldn't hesitate for a second to carry one.

I am constantly informing my students (usually after they bought one because they thought a snubby would be "easy") that snubnose revolvers are more of an expert's gun. It generally takes far more time and effort to be as good with a snubby as you can be with a semi-auto. They might be simple firearms, but that doesn't make them easy.

@CarryTrainer with solid grip, a 1 lbs. Invictus diving watch would be part of the mass absorbing recoil. Theoretically, you could wear chain and plate maille gauntlets, too, with the same effect. Not making any style suggestions, but physics says it would work. Anyone ever compared felt recoil with and without a beefy Invictus type of wrist watch? Some cheap jogging cardio wrist weights could be a quick stand in to test -- the laws of physics treat all atoms the same. With a rock solid unbreaking grip like you always demonstrate, I bet it would work, for the same scientific reasons as heavy steel absorbs more recoil than light polymer, all else equal :)

I carried DA revolvers throughout my career as a peace officer (except when forced to autos by the PD) and now long retired, I still do. My safe is full of revolvers, and two 1911A1s in 45 Auto. No plastic things allowed 😅
Revolvers aren't making a come back. I worked at a range for 7 months, the biggest in my state with about 1400 members, and revolvers were not a common sight. They were even less common at competitive events, to the point where we often had to make considerations for revolver shooters at the last minute.

I love my snubnose S&w .357 revolvers. Got 640, 649, but enjoy carrying the 360 or my 340pd, makes for great backup or winter coat pistol. And deep carry.

In 1974 my issued Colt DS saved my life in a gunfight w/three armed robbery suspects where I had to reload to finish the fight. My retirement EDC is a 340PD in a pocket holster, loaded w/+P. I learned the thumb over thumb across the backstrap grip back in 1968.

Excellent video! I resemble that burned “thumbs forward” with a K-frame magnum remark. Wasn’t trained to be a thumbs forward shooter with wheel guns, but sort of reverted back that way when I was putting in some range time with an “old friend.” Revolvers do make a lot of sense for shooters who want to own a simple handgun but don’t want to shoot that much - yet regardless of one’s intentions, it is still important to complete a good revolver basics course that entrains enough into one’s head. Buying, loading, and tossing into the dresser drawer is not good enough. I’m becoming a proponent of .22LR revolvers at least for training in a world where alloy and polymer frame snubbies offer recoil that is more than a lot of people are willing to admit they can handle. Anyway, I think we’d rather see a block full of responsible law abiding people armed with .22s than with nothing at all.

I bought a taurus 856 because i like the way revolvers look. First shots were so bad.lol. i had the sight picture all wrong. Second time, i bought several kinds of ammunition and found out it shoots much more accurately with Aguila round nose fmj's. After finding the best ammo, I tried shooting again. Keep in mind i had done months of dry fire snap cap practice between the first range visit and the second. When i shot this time i was able to have a one hole group at 7 yards. At 15 yards a head shot wasnt hard. I had tried buffalo bore lswchp rounds but they were too hard on my hands in the ultralight revolver. The aguilas, i figured, would provide excellent penetration with minimal recoil. This is optimal for me as i am in and around cars for work and barriers would be an issue in a confrontation. I have four speed loaders that work flawlessly so i can have 30 rounds of ammo on me plus a few speed strips in the pocket if need be. You might wondering why i got a revolver instead of a semiauto. The main reason is the tendency to limpwrist a gun sometimes in a gunfight. This causes semiautos to malfuntion because they are dependent on recoil to work the slide. Not so with a wheel gun. Also ive seen multiple bodycam videos of accidental mag releases in the middle of a gunfight on youtube. This doesnt happen with a wheel gun. You dont need a magazine. Still semiautos are probably better overall with better triggers and better handling, but i like my revolver, the way it looks and feels. Its old school but can get the job done.
Great stuff...my normal carry is a full size glock at work or a 43X with a dot...but i also carry a snubbie on my ankle for work and sometimes IWB in shorts.

M&P Bodyguard .38 with a Houge Grip.
With snubbies I use the 3rd option. Thanks for reminding me I don’t currently own any snubbies. I’m going to have to correct this!

Great point re the memory on the grip. Bianchi with a 357 Sig and only consider a snub if just no other option works or as backup. 2” Rhino in 357 Mag prevents loss in capability if you got the money
Recently moved to one gun all the time, Beretta 92 sao in a vedder, appendix.
I like my s&w .357 with the shortened hammer… they conceal pretty well.. they shoot alright at defensive distances.. you can literally stuff them anywhere. Great back up gun to have imo.
I do his/hers LCR-357s, put 135 grain speer gold dot short barrel 357 in mine, and 38 special in hers. Sucks to shoot, but man, it's super easy to cc.
I’ve noticed a few folks noting bad primers with a specific .38 special load as of late.

Is a 2.5” L frame considered snubnose? I do carry a j frame snub in summer. I carry the L frame off body. Having both lets me practice with both whenever I want.
I have a 36 gun safe full of firearms only because of WA States band of late but a good few of them get lots of regular use.
What holster are you using with the Ruger?

Same. Beautiful little snubnose. Carries like a dream! I actually like my 340 better due to the sights. Its a couple ounces heavier but the big dot really works well for me.
Make sure if you use plus P ammo that your revovler is rated to handle it as that ammo load can through timing off on revolver .

I take my S&W 340PD when I’m working out or just wearing sweats and walking the dog in low risk situations . Love little snubbies and have a BBQ gun with ivory grips on it.
I find it funny that lever guns and revolvers are making a comeback. I own several revolvers, including 2 snub noses. One is a first gen Colt Cobra, so no +P practice in that one. The other is a 3" GP100 in 10mm. That's a handful with full power 10mm rounds.

A lot of it is due to local restrictions / bans on semi-autos. Snub nose revolvers are still legal in most states, and lever actions are less scary to the public than ARs.
@jeangonzales6679 not too long ago, some folks fought to make snubs illegal, "Saturday night specials" were all the talk in the early 70s
I’ve always loved a revolver. Aesthetically, I prefer a 4 inch barrel at least, but a snub most definitely has its practical upside. As far as I’m concerned a good wheel gun never goes out of style. 😎💥
I don't care much about aesthetics. It's all about reliability and functionality for me.
@@CarryTrainer Reliability and functionality are DEFINITELY the first two considerations. I guess instead of aesthetically I should have said it’s more nostalgic for me. I just remember my uncle who I really looked up to that was chief of police in our small town in upstate New York shoot his S&W model 13. Then he would sit at his kitchen table and clean it. But you’re right. A snub nose is far more practical, especially for pocket carry if that’s what you’re after. Are revolvers generally more reliable than a semi auto pistol? Probably a tough one to answer.
How often do you have students who can't pull the trigger on a snub? I had a student who was in her 60s who couldn't pull the trigger on her husband's snub even once. Her 30 year old daughter tried a different snub too that day and she also had trouble. She ended up being able to get 1 trigger pull.
Can't pull a snub trigger. Probably could not operate a slide. Or load a sig magazine.
Revolvers (not just snubbies) are so underrated as self defense tools. Also I'm a big fan of not "being a dickhead."
Are snub nose revolvers any good? Yes and no, good if you train with it bad if you don't. My summer carry gun is usually a 2-inch Colt Cobra.
The Colt Cobra 🐍 is awesome; surprisingly accurate for me! 😃... I can't speak for the King Cobra or the others in Colt's lineup, but the regular Cobra is a doozy.
I wouldn’t say they suck but I don’t carry one. The biggest problem I see with snubbies isn’t the gun, it’s the people who carry/buy them. It’s typically inexperienced shooters who bought it (or whose husband bought it for them) because it’s small and “easy to use”. Guys, if you want your lady to enjoy shooting, don’t get her a snubby.
It depends on the snubby, imo... If it's one of these super lightweight J-frames, then yes. But there's heavier and larger framed snubs out there - like the Cobra, SP101, or 686.
Or get a lower caliber snubby. The new S & W 432UC in .32 HR, though pricey has much less recoil than .38 and the ballistics are almost the same. Plus it’s a six shot. Ruger also makes lower calibers at a more affordable price.

so, 1 gun all the time, I used to think that was the way, buy a carry gun and carry it, figure the right holster and voila. but ...... and this is a big but. mitigation of FTF (feed or fire). I now have multiple pistols I can carry, I am familiar with them. why carry many ? well, I used to own a Smith bodyguard 380. it was small, well built, good sights, etc etc. but, i shot like crap, accuracy was sub par. first day out of the box, one of the two magazines failed. springs crushed from the factory, so smith sent me a rebuild kit so i was back to 2 mags. then one day, went to the range, did my usual run 50 as a function test. all good. then maybe 3 months went by of carrying and not shooting. hit the range, and ... bang, click, bang, click click click, bang. get the idea. the pistol was functionally a paperweight and had been the entire time i carried. so now, if i have a pistol that becomes defective, i reduce the statistical odds of bang-click syndrome by spreading across different tools. but, too revolvers, yes have some in my rotation and did carry a 22lr, H&R 922 for 1954. at 7 yards, 1.25 inch groups.
You are missing John's point. It's rather simple. Purchase a quality handgun, hoster and belt. Train with them until a deep level of competency is developed.
If you have firearms that aren't reliable, I'd never carry them.
Honestly, Mickey was nice to you. He could have called you out for being negilegent in your duties as someone who carries. The reality is that you should have a gun that is without a doubt reliable, and that gun will stick with you every time you go out an about as long as it's legal.
I have a P365XL that was vetted with 500rds in one trip and over the past 7 months another 2000~rds or so. I have had maybe 3 malfunctions, but they were with ammo that had been tossed by people at the range (didn't work in their gun and didn't work in mine, sometimes they do work in mine). Put factory ammo in the gun, and it runs, and runs, and runs.

a 2" revolver is perfect for concealed-carry. it is invisible. but you don't want to use one in a gunfight. If there's an emergency and you only have a revolver, run away....but it will increase your chances of survival
