I have been a Firearms Instructor for over 25 years (NO UA-cam lol) and you are the ONLY ONE -other than me - that teaches this material. I don’t go online hunting for other instructors, but I see very very few that cover this correctly. Outstanding job - you also have my subscription. Never too old and experienced to learn more and I definitely don’t know it all lol
Suggest you get out from under your rock then. Tons of people teaching this same stuff... it's not a secret it's basic principles of a good grip. If you only hang out with old fudds that are stuck in their ways from the 80s then maybe I can see how you might feel that way.
@jsk8drummer we all know what we know and we don't know, what we don't know. Until we find new information or it's presented to us in an appropriate way for us to consume and utilize, it may not be apparent.
@@jsk8drummer I don’t go searching for Instructors on UA-cam. However - I have seen recoil addressed but not presented well and not thoroughly. As I stated - I cover this as well in my instruction (he actually does it better than I do) as as he said “we know what we know”. Seems that you are a troll that wants to look cool stating that - but you don’t. Furthermore you don’t know me or my background which further proves that you are posting nonsensical comments. I am definitely not stuck in the 80s but I assure you that the Guys I was trained by back then were still badass and would easily hold their own today. I think you need to self-reflect a little more.
Yes, well, the problem is he is not showing good technique, so why should other youtubers teach this? His draw arm elbow swings way too far out so his muzzle sweeps his foot on the draw. Also, apex carry is dangerous, especially for new shooters, and they may not have proper gear. My advice is to learn from pros like Jerry Miculek instead. You don't see good shooters teach like this dude, apex carry, or sweep body parts. There is a reason this clown is by himself in the woods. He would be run off from a well run IDPA shooting match. I wonder if he is smart enough to have a trauma kit and working cell phone?
@@gwaapgutta8553 lol you haven’t? I even created a play list on master grip, has 30-40 vids (pick from at least 100) which I think offer unique or different perspectives. Not only did this make me a better shot by fixing the issues I was having, it’s also how I introduced & talked my wife into carrying.
This is an excellent video on grip and posture. It’s awesome to hear “don’t get frustrated”, and “it’s a life-long journey”, to help encourage us to not give up trying to improve. To me, it sounds like a skill to learn and to maintain, just keep trying, you will improve. He nailed this one, really well spoken and meaningful.
Years ago i spent quite a bit of time at the range and did ok. The past few years, not so much. Last weekend i went back, WOAH! My muscle memory must have Dementia! This morning your video popped up. What a great refresher! i kinda felt like i was starting at day 1! I'm more of a visual learner but your narrative explanation painted a vivid picture. Also the close up shots and demonstrations were spot on! Thanks
17:05 Thats how i hold it and i use that left hand/arm to pull down on the gun while using my right hand with slight muscle to keep the gun aimed UP at the target to keep the recoil to a minimum. If i dont do that, the gun will lift like 3 inches.
As someone currently training for his Firearms Instructor license, I have to say: This is the ABSOLUTE BEST video on the subject I've ever watched, and I've watched hundreds!
As always another great training video, it’s almost like a private one on one training session. I find during rapidfire my shoulders tighten up and my head will move down and forward which causes my groupings to spread out and my red dot does not return to the previous spot on the target. I believe shooting is not only mastering the mechanics, but also mastering the mental side and controlling your body to relax the muscles not being used during the shooting process. Thank you for sharing your time and your expertise and I look forward to the next video and the next training sessionwith you.
This is one of the best ones on recoil and grip out there. I have watched many of them. I think that ALOT of shooters of ALL levels should see this video, thanks for making this.
Excellent on the "overgrip/undergrip". It's something I never thought about on the nitty-gritty level, but have always tried to aware of myself, especially when practicing one handed. When the grip is just right, one knows because the rest of what is done with the pistol goes much more smoothly.
Just started with sport shooting and found your video very informative and helpful, being at the beginning at my journey into shooting one of my biggest problem was grip and how to avoid the muzzle moving. I will take the points you made in this video to the shooting range and im sure my accuracy will improve if I can successfully follow your instructions. And I will strengthen my grip , wrists and forearms to gain that vice life grip
This man is a good teacher. He's not so square that he sounds like someone I wouldn't want to listen to, and his personality isn't so big that he is irritating. His instructions are good, and his explanations are thorough and inviting. Ok... his ego is a bit big but it's a hell of a lot better than a lot of guys.
This is the best grip tutorial I’ve come across. How you place the firearm in the correct spot in your hand based on pointing is a game changer for me.
Thank you for all your tips, advise and encouragement. I was feeling a little defeated about my shooting but now you've gotten me excited to get back out there.
I really appreciate that you do these videos for us knuckleheads. Also, being born and raised in Chicago, and drive a semi out to Davenport IA, several times I have seen American Eagles now, I actually saw 2 in one day, and it is totally badass 🇺🇲
Good concise tutorial, thanks. It is great to hear the principles/objectives in the roles of fingers and contact points. Some instructors tell you what they think you should do, but not why. It is good to understand the potential effects of certain techniques. It allows some individual adaptation to achieve the desired result.
Couldn’t have watched this vid at a better time. Going to the range today and was planing on working on my rapid fire recoil control. Now I have some specific things to pay attention to.
I rarely (never) have patience to watch thru to end of these type videos, however, I watched urs all thru & sent it to my grandson. Great training video
Very great concepts and very informative. I tend to shoot slight left on my targets and have gradually improved to aim more center mass. I love your content. Thanks, Mickey!
Man that’s the best video class I ever had and best instruction video, I was wrong literally, in everything I was blaming the gun but everything change after this video…Thanks!
Thanks for the GREAT instructions! BALD EAGLE at the end reminded me of sitting out in the yard a couple of years ago, and one flew over me, heading S, much lower than normal. After it flew over, it changed direction and headed SE. First time seeing one here in NE Texas. 'Been here for 30+ yrs. It was awesome!
I started watching you in 2019. When I got my first gun. You have always been a very educational instructor. Thanks and keep up the great work. Unfortunately I live in Maryland so you probably won't be here anytime soon.
I just have to say you are one heck of an instructor. I spent a lot of years in the military as an instructor (not firearms), and you are top-notch. Thanks for the info. I would love to take one of your classes for sure!
5:24 I have found that for me, being right handed but left eye dominant, I have to over-grip my pistols to achieve sight alignment with my dominant eye. With long arms, I've actually had to learn to run most left handed, as attempting to retrain my eyes proved more difficult than the rest of my body.
I am right eye dominant and left-handed. Until 2 weeks ago I had never shot a pistol right-handed but I have shot rifles right-handed all my life. Everything changed when I put a pistol in my right hand and now my groups are better along w repeatability. If you are shooting a rifle left-handed, try a pistol left handed w this technique and see what happens.
I’m far from an experienced shooter but working along with the video my grip feels better, as well as making sense, which it didn’t before. Easy to understand. Thanks
Wanted to add, everyone talked about muzzle rise but nobody mentions grip flipping out! Instead of thinking about squeezing so hard the barrel doesn't rise, you show grip it correctly and the grip doesn't flip out which in turn stops that muzzle rise! Great concepts.
Very good video, going to try on the range. Also I've noticed, people who can hide full size gun in their hand have less problem with recoil management.
I used to be a really really good shot. Bullseyes at 10 yards no problem.. but I couldn't shoot fast. Just one shot at a time. Got my canik tti combat and was having some problems with the slide not fully resetting about twice every 10 shots. I thought maybe I got a defective gun or it needed to be broken in. But then I found these videos on not limp wristing while shooting and turns out that was totally what I was doing on every shot. It's amazing I didn't have more malfunctions while shooting. So I was all excited to go to the range to try locking my wrists and seeing how great my tti is. Good news is that no more malfunctions. Except once out of 250 rounds but I noticed I was limp wristing the gun again. So I'm sure it was my fault. Bad news is I can't hit the broad side of a barn now. I'm concentrating on trying to keep the gun flat that my shots are extremely low. I'm so frustrated and don't know what to do..
SFC Keith Sanderson talked about the necessity of gripping it like you may be trying to keep someone from taking it from you. In fact, someone may try to take it from you in real life, but the hard grip helps you control it when someone is not trying to take it from you.
I grew up pretty active strong love range time and mma but random worsening health issues have made me feel weak like I’m 80 when I’m only 29. Thank you for the info on training
The one thing I struggle with is the trigger hand grip. I’ve heard both; grip it harder and don’t squeeze the crap out of it with the trigger hand. I’ll continue to practice. Nice video.
The recoil caused me a visit to the ER. 5 stitches in my thumb of the supporting hand. Can't figure out what I did wrong. First time firing a gun. Great video. Thank you

I finally gave up on listening to people, I stopped trying all the youtube techniques, and I just started mag dumping. After just a few range sessions my accuracy and consistency went from bad to better than most. What happened was my body just figured out how to grip a pistol in a manner that worked for me. When I think about what Im doing my shot placement goes to hell. When I stop thinking and take a shot like Im going to mag dump, I hit the target where I want. Doesn't matter what gun I have in my hand, I can shoot them all really good. What I think is that gripping the crap out of the gun is what helped me.

How do you prevent the loose wrists?? Keeping the hands tight and loosening the wrists. How are you tightening them to prevent the wrist from breaking?
My hands jerk right and up significantly after the shot. Shot on target is a little left an up though. I use thumbs forward grip, elbows mostly straight, body and head slightly forward bent. What may be the reason for the hand jerk?
Agreed with comment best shooters not always good instructors. As they don't always understand the issues or difficulties folk develop in their shooting practises. Mainly because they themselves didn't have those problems to correct.
Grip, stance, posture and your level of proficiency and skills is what sets you apart from the rest~. If you're not training correctly, then you only have yourself to blame!

How do you prevent the loose wrists?? Keeping the hands tight and loosening the wrists. How are you tightening them to prevent the wrist from breaking?
By being mindful of what you're doing
My hands jerk right and up significantly after the shot. Shot on target is a little left an up though. I use thumbs forward grip, elbows mostly straight, body and head slightly forward bent. What may be the reason for the hand jerk?
Agreed with comment best shooters not always good instructors. As they don't always understand the issues or difficulties folk develop in their shooting practises. Mainly because they themselves didn't have those problems to correct.
I love every second of this video. Bravo.
Grip, stance, posture and your level of proficiency and skills is what sets you apart from the rest~. If you're not training correctly, then you only have yourself to blame!
One of the best grip videos. Thank you!
